STREET STYLE
STYLISH COMFORT BY MARIE TORIO
@PHOTOSBYMARIETORIO
David was out and about on his day off when I met him. He lives and works in Astoria and had just finished grabbing a bite to eat. He said his style is “comfortable with effort.” He had a very masculine, cozy look about him, from the way he layered his chunky sweater and jacket to how he effortlessly wore is scarf.
I
Madeline (@madeline.e.fox) works at Milkflower but was enjoying her day off running errands when I met her. She describes her fashion picks as “minimal/Euro/ classic.” Her look was entirely comprised of neutrals, with a tan fringed scarf, crossbody and lace-up booties popping against an otherwise dark ensemble. Even her half-up relaxed top knot worked!
t’s finally warm enough to shed a few winter layers, and Astorians are taking advantage of the early spring weather to reveal their style. It’s still crisp enough to need scarves, but western Queens residents could unbutton their coats to show off chunky sweaters and boldly printed tops. Pieces like a colorful, patterned handkerchief, bold green booties and some funky eyewear really stood out.
Photographer Michael (@michaelsellasphotography) was visiting Astoria for a meal at Omonia Cafe. His casual look, with a versatile knit blazer paired with pants and kicks, was perfect for a mild, early spring day. I also appreciated his clear frames — very hip.
Jeanine (@jnine_418) is an administrator at LaGuardia Community College. She was enjoying a day off when I spotted her. She explained to me that her style changes according to how she feels, and that she prefers comfort. Her rolled-up skinny jeans, plush coat and lace-up boots were perfect for a relaxed weekend outfit.

Julienne (@justbeingj) was in Astoria for a business meeting with her new fiancé, Jared. Congrats to them! She describes her fashion choices as “minimalistic/chic.” She started with all-black ensemble layered with a light jacket, adding details like bold green booties, a wraparound fur scarf, statement earrings and flawless makeup to polish off her look.
Jared (jaredcrea8s) was visiting Astoria for a business meeting. He calls his style “classic with a pop.” No arguing here. I stopped him as soon as I caught sight of his dress pants, blue blazer, briefcase and bold handkerchief. Definitely dapper in my book!

The Season Of Transformation
April is upon us and with it, the excitement of nature’s bloom. Warmer weather, increased out-door opportunities, and thoughts of flipping from our winter to our summer selves encourages the planning of transformation. For many of us, that means changing out our wardrobes, lightening up our diets, and increasing our physical activity. Spring is the season of re-birth. But what is transformation? Is it always tied to that before and after swimsuit pic? With the idea that transformation can be as individual as we are, I caught up with four locals with very different stories connected through Astoria’s Iron Lion Performance. Melissa Devito is a Pediatric Social Worker working in Autism Services. “I wanted to transform to be my best self- to be strong both mentally and physically. I wanted to live the best life I could. The support from the incredible coaches, dietitian and community at have really helped me thrive and to love the daily process of working towards my goals. My best advice for success is to find your tribe. Find support. The guidance and encouragement I have received [from the team at Iron Lion] is truly priceless and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”
Mike Mannino is an Aviation Professional out of LGA. One of the biggest thigs I have learned about “transformation” is that you can’t let yourself be overwhelmed by the total amount of change you’re attempting. Just try to be 1% better everyday and turn little actions into big goals... because you can’t look at losing 100# all at once. You have to make it an obtainable goal in your mind. Something incremental in the middle. It’s a mental game. You achieve your first goal and then go to the next one. And honestly, the key is support. The support I get from this place helps me sustain my life transformation”
Karin Vengas work in Non-Profit Development for Arts Education and College Readiness serving low income families. I joined ILP looking to regain my fitness after pregnancy and battling pain from various injuries. It was debilitating and I was desperate to become a normal, active person again. I realized that for me “transformation” was about showing up. Years of pain with unpredictable triggers had left me a very nervous person, but despite my reluctance, I kept showing up. I’m really proud of that and I think the coaches are too. They’ve helped me face my fears and with each new program, I grow more confident.

Matt Moschetto is a proud member of the New York Police Department. I gained “sympathy weight” during my wife’s pregnancy (it’s a real thing). I wasn’t exercising, I wasn’t eating right and I wasn’t happy with how I looked. So, I started the UnCAGED program at Iron Lion at the suggestion of a friend. I was sure I was going to die half the time, but the coaches told me my efforts would be worth it in the end... and they were right. I trained three times per week and worked with the dietitian to clean up my eating habits. I can’t recommend this program highly enough. They teach you how train so you don’t get hurt, teach you how to eat to maximize your results and are just all-around good people you have fun around. The best advice I can give in regards to personal transformation is start and don’t give up. It might be hard, but it’s worth it. The common factor these heart felt stories share is a place where knowledge is passed on, support is given and where personal transformation is possible. That facility is Astoria’s own Iron Lion Performance, located in the Ditmars neighborhood off of 38th street and 23rd Ave.
Limited Time Offer $99.00 Interested? The Iron Lion Performance Crew is offering a trial month for $99.00! Try them out for 30 days to see if this is the right place for you. If after 30 days, they don’t knock your paws off with knowledge and energy, you can change your mind with no hassles. Come see what “The Den” is all about, so you can make an informed decision about your health and performance.
What You Get: • Progress Plan • 1on1 Orientation Day • 12x monthly semiprivate training sessions • Unlimited Conditioning and Kinstretch Classes • Monthly Journal • 1on1 Nutrition Session with our Dietician • Open Gym

THE REAL DEAL Astoria woman takes the stage as suitcase model on ‘Deal or No Deal’
A
By EMILY DAVENPORT
Queens woman is helping ask the age-old question: Deal, or no deal? Born and raised in Astoria, Soraya Yd spent a lot of time growing up hanging around Astoria Boulevard. After graduating from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Yd, like many high school grads, was unsure of what step to take next. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to have a focal point,” Yd said. After dabbling in modeling, it wasn’t until Yd was an extra for a show on MTV3 where it became clear that she wanted to do on-camera work. She went on to attend LaGuardia Community College and majored in Communications and Television Broadcasting. She signed with her first agency in 2011, and after a few stints in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, there was going to be an opportunity that would change Yd’s life. After a nine-year hiatus, CNBC announced in 2018 that it would revive the
16
APRIL 2019
popular game show “Deal or No Deal” for a fifth season, and would be looking for a new crop of models to present the show’s suitcases. Yd’s agency set her up with a Skype interview with the casting directors at “Deal or No Deal.” “My Wi-Fi actually went down right before the interview, so I had to rush to my agency’s office and set up for the interview,” Yd recalled. “I was fortunate to be seen for a second interview, where you go and meet the people working on the show. There were so many people there, but I showed off my character and didn’t hold back, and it worked out to my benefit.” Yd was actually in Peru when she found out that she landed the “Deal or No Deal” job. “I was on a spiritual journey in Peru when I found out,” Yd said. “It was supposed to be a zen experience, but I was bouncing off the walls when I found out.” After two months of filming in Orlando and many fist bumps from “Deal or No Deal” host Howie Mandel, the new season
premiered on Dec. 5, 2018, with Yd holding case No. 1. The popular game “Deal or No Deal,” which originally ran on NBC from 20052009, consists of one contestant picking from 26 suitcases, each of which containing a monetary value ranging from 1 cent to 1 million dollars. Throughout the game, the contestant selects cases to open, revealing dollar amounts that aren’t in their case. At certain points in the game, the Banker, who remains anonymous, makes offers to buy the contestant’s case based on the amount of money that has been eliminated from the game after being revealed in another suitcase. If the contestant accept the banker’s offer, the game ends and the player wins that amount; however, if the contestant rejects the offer, the game continues until a deal is made or there are two cases left. At the end of the game, the contestant can keep their case or switch it with the last remaining case. This time around, “Deal or No Deal” has a couple of twists that changes up the
game this time around. In addition having a female banker, contestants now have the opportunity to make counter-offers to the banker. “I love the new banker. She’s bad to the bone,” Yd said. What hasn’t changed is that “Deal or No Deal” is that the show features 26 women who hold and present the suitcases, re-
vealing each case’s monetary value for each game. This time, however, there’s more to being a suitcase holder than meets the eye. “It’s not just about being a model,” Yd said. “The producers were very specific about picking the 26 models. We all come many different backgrounds. We have women who are getting their Ph.D., Olympians; even I’m

my mom’s home health attendant. Our backgrounds help us all connect to the contestants. We’re not just models; we’re human beings.” One story that stuck out to Yd was when a speech pathologist competed on the show. “I didn’t speak English or Spanish when I was in kindergarten, so I felt very connected to this particular contestant,” Yd said. “The speech pathologist we had on the show had helped a boy who hadn’t spoken at all. If you speak to him now, he sounds like an adult. We surprised the contestant by bringing the boy on stage, which brought so much emotion to the episode.” To say the least, this particular contestant really hit close to home for Yd. “To think of how invested he was, how much of an impact he made on this boy’s life, it’s incredible,” Yd said. “I thanked him after the show. I told him, ‘You are the reason that I can do anything with my career.’” No matter who the contestant is, Yd says that see finds a way to connect with the individual. It means so much to Yd that she gets to be a part of their “Deal or No Deal” experience. “We hold something that can change someone’s life forever,” Yd said. “It’s such a special feeling to be a part of someone’s memory.” Yd believes that anyone is capable of achieving their dreams, no matter where you are in life. “No matter the circumstances, you can always make a difference and change your life,” said Yd. “Don’t give up!” Tune in to CNBC on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT to catch new episodes of “Deal or No Deal.” Check your local listings.

Spots for Spot The best places to take your dog in western Queens BY ALLISON KRIDLE
As a three-year Astoria resident who dreams every day about getting a dog, I find myself wandering through the neighborhood, thinking about the days my imaginary furry friend and I would spend together. No, this isn’t a sob story; I have suggestions. There are countless places we dog owners (I mean, you dog owners) can go to spend time with your pet in western Queens. We rounded up six different places in western Queens where you can bond with your dog, pamper them or let them befriend other pups.
Château le Woof

If you have strolled through Socrates Park off Vernon Boulevard, chances are you and your pup have laid eyes on the dog café (humans also allowed) and pet shop, Château le Woof. Just by the name of the business, you can probably tell that it is a one-of-a-kind establishment. “Château le Woof stands out because there really is no place like it. It’s an experience more than anything, and everyone who walks in the door can feel it,” said Natassa Contini, owner of Château le Woof. The charming business is separated into two parts: a café that includes pastries and coffee (also serving brunch, beer and wine) and a dog shop that includes a play area for four-legged guests. Château le Woof keeps its Parisian-inspired store filled with organic treats, and they also offer grooming and dog-walking services. They really do it all. “I am the sole owner, a female, and also [an] Astoria resident,” Contini said. “I actually live in the building! I’ve watched this neighborhood grow and transform, although proud to be able to still provide a thriving female-owned small business in the neighborhood. We are the modern day ‘moms and pops.’” Contini is not only a proud business owner, but a proud dog owner. She has a 16-year-old red-nose pitbull (the inspiration behind Château le Woof) and a 3-year-old Chihuahua named Lola, aka Creep.

Vitality Health Pets On Broadway near the 46th Street R/M train station sits Vitality Health Pets, or the nirvana for your furry companion. The cozy shop teems with healthy, affordable food choices for animals; cute and squeaky toys; and grooming supplies. The shop supplies dry, wet and raw food and lets any animal owner use the self-wash station for their pet. “Vitality Health Pets fits very well in our neighborhood for many reasons,” owner John Sierros said. “With the closing of all Petlands recently, there are barely any tangible stores that you can walk in and buy anything
from toys to food. Everything is online! You don’t know how products look or feel. Basically it’s blind shopping. We provide a real experience.” The business may have just opened up nine months ago, but it has everything you need for your canine and cats. All of the employees are also well-versed in anything four-legged. “I have five dogs myself and [the] manager Catherine has one and our secondin-command David has two. We are animal people. My background is training working dogs and obedience training. I own Vitality Market across the street and
always wanted to open up a pet shop to fill the gap there is in the industry,” Sierros said. After a long day of walking and sniffing through the neighborhood and playing in one of western Queens’ lovely parks, any pup would love to get a nice bath, courtesy of Sierros and his staff, and a yummy organic treat at the end of the day.

There’s nothing that will make your day more pleasant than walking by the business Dozo Dog on 31st Street, glancing through their window, and seeing multiple dogs happily playing together in a large playpen. This past February, the doggie daycare officially opened its doors to all dogs, no matter age, breed or health conditions. “Our favorite part of owning a doggie daycare is being able to give a quality of life to both dogs and their owners. Dozo Dog is here to provide socialization for dogs while giving owners peace of mind knowing that their loved one is being treated as if they were at home,” said part owner Yukako Acarino Kamijo. Kamijo owns Dozo Dog with her husband Louis Acarino, and the couple has an Italian greyhound named Gizmo. “Gizmo loves to protect us from anyone and anything,” Kamijo said. “He's always alert and always finds the softest spots in the house to relax. While at our facility, Gizmo makes sure all of our guest stay in line. He’s the boss.” Just like Gizmo, Dozo Dog customers can keep an eye on their beloved pup after they drop them off at doggie daycare. According to Acarino, Dozo Dog has HD cameras installed in the facility, and customers can access a video feed through an app on their phone. Aside from providing a safe place for canines, Dozo Dog also has a gift shop of treats, clothes and toys. They also offer grooming to dogs of all sizes. You and your four-legged friend will leave Dozo Dog feeling refreshed and spoiled.

Who doesn’t love the feeling after a soothing wash and fresh haircut? Your fur babies relish it just as much as you do and deserve to get professionally groomed, too! But don’t take my word for it; try out local pet goods shop and grooming salon Treats and Tips, with two western Queens locations. Your pup will leave looking and feeling their best and will totally love (and lick) you even more. “We chose this nice neighborhood because we felt it was much needed to let this community know how accessible high-quality pet food and professional advice can be, and through a few simple changes, we can bring harmony and balance to households with pet dogs or cats
or a mix of both,” said Alex Mite, Treats and Tips vice president and secretary. No matter what your dog’s needs are, whether it’s an ear cleaning, brush/ de-sheading or teeth cleaning, Treats and Tips has you covered. The staff are equipped with knowledge about everything from pet toys and accessories to pet behavior and socializing your pup through daycare and boarding. “I don't personally own a dog, but I've been running a doggie daycare and boarding for the past 17 years and continue to do so, and it’s always heartbreaking every time one of them moves out of town. They become mine the moment they cross my gate,” Mite said. Treats and Tips is the ideal spot to help your furry family feel and look their best.
You may enter with concerns about your pet’s health, but I guarantee you’ll have fewer worries when you leave.

Dog Park at Gantry Plaza State Park As you may or may not know, Gantry Plaza State Park is chock-full of things to do and see like the piers, the skyline and the Pepsi-Cola sign. But the best part? All of the puppy watching one can partake in at the dog park.
Aside from the backdrop of the concrete jungle, the expansive public space’s dog area includes hill-like structures in the playpen so they can jump and climb with ease. It’s an excellent way to give your furniture a break. The dog park also contains two areas separated by a fence just in case your dog is anti-rowdy (I wouldn’t want someone trying to jump on my back either). If your dog doesn’t like dog parks at all, but loves the
great outdoors, Gantry is equipped with sidewalks that span the whole riverside park and grassy areas perfect for lounging.

Nestled on Skillman Avenue, right next to the border of Astoria and Sunnyside, sits the Torsney/Lou Lodati Park, Sunnyside’s very own dog park. The recreational space has a sizable area for the pups to run around and pools where your furry friend can cool off during the summer. Plus, the public park provides poop bags, so no one steps in something smelly on your watch. Torsney/Lou Lodati has not one but two dog areas. One is larger than the other and they are separated by a chain-link fence — perfect if your dog is more of a peoplelover than dog-lover (nothing to be ashamed about). Plus, Torsney/Lou Lodati also hosts a farmers market on summer Saturdays, so you can pick up fresh produce while you’re there. An ideal play day in any dog’s eyes!

MAPPING MEALS How this Astoria-founded app is changing the way we find food BY CLAIRE LEADEN @CLAIRELEADEN @CLAIRELEADEN
We’ve all been there: just casually scrolling through Instagram, when our finger pauses mid-air at the most mouthwatering, cheese-drenched appetizer or chocolatedripping dessert. We screenshot it, or save it to Instagram Collections, and then kind of forget about it — no matter how badly we want to eat it.

But Astoria resident Luiggi Pera and his business partner Gennadii Ivanov are changing the foodie game with their new geotag-based app for mapping, tracking and discovering new foods, Popcity, now available in the Apple App Store (and soon to come for Android). A perhaps unlikely app developer with no background in tech, Pera worked as a lawyer for a big NYC bank but was eating all over the New York food scene in his spare time. He used search services like Yelp and Zomato to find new grub, but was frustrated that he couldn’t find a way to save an exact meal to look back on. Thus the idea for Popcity was born. Since Pera was unfamiliar with the space, he went to a startup event where he met Ivanov, who wanted to built an app, but didn’t know exactly what. Ivanov always felt strongly that mapping and location features could be utilized more. Their first idea was a geotag social network, but just as the two started gathering funds from family and friends and looking into next steps, Pera’s son was born prematurely. And Snapchat came out with its Snap Map feature — which practically mimicked the app they had in mind. Pera took some time to be with his family, and the two joined forces again about a year later (with a healthy son), to “do it smarter this time,” Pera said. They
conducted surveys on what categories this kind of mapping service would work best for, and found that people overwhelmingly wanted to use it for food (as opposed to dating or discounts, for example).
They officially launched in January 2019 and have over 2,000 users, including trusted foodie influencers like @thehungryturban and @brooklyn_eats_ world. APRIL 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

Unlike services like Foursquare and Yelp, Popcity is not based on restaurant reviews but rather based on specific dishes and photos. So if you see something delectable on Instagram, you can copy the photo and location link, open it in Popcity and save it to your individual “map.” Once in Popcity, the photos will let you know how far away in walking distance you are from each meal, and if you’re around the city, will also send you notifications if you’re especially close to something. Plus, it keeps all of your desired eats and drinks in one place, so you can just scroll through the pictures in your map the next time you don’t know where to go for dinner. “What we’re doing is focusing on independent food experiences,”
34
APRIL 2019
Pera explained. “Sure, you can find a restaurant on your [Popcity] map, but what you’re finding really is the individual meals someone may have taken a picture of. So this specific croissant, salad, etc. … we’re using that as our focal point when you’re looking for food.” Pera has lived in Astoria since 2015, and the company is officially based there as well. He said that our foodcentric neighborhood played a huge role in the app’s development. “It’s Astoria; what’s not to love?” he said. “You have a lot more going on [here] in terms of diverse food. Here you have well-known, good cuisine, where in [the rest of] New York you’re getting lots of turnover.”

The famous Chip, with its tantalizing photos of thick, melty chocolate chip cookies, is a prime example of the kind of food that should be mapped in Popcity. “They were really influential to the app, in terms of social media,” he said. “They have a social media presence that captured the purpose of Instagram when it came to food.” As for Pera’s favorite food items in Astoria? He listed the chocolate chip walnut cookie from Chip, gnocchi di patate from Vite, and QWNS Cafe’s blueberry lemon ginger muffin. Popcity is only working in NYC as of now, but the team has been meeting with contacts in other cities with potential for expansion. And
though he said startup life holds a lot of pressure in itself, Pera doesn’t regret leaving law behind at all. “I’m looking forward to the point where we can have an office, provide jobs I’m proud of,” he said. “I can’t wait for what’s to come.”

Your Friendly Neighborhood Physical Therapist
P
By DANIEL GROGAN
hil Serras and Rodney Ramirez, owners of Triboro PT on Astoria’s 24th Avenue, were both born in Queens; they both studied physical therapy in the Netherlands; and they both returned to Queens with the eventual goal of opening and operating their own practice — a goal they realized 12 years ago last month. But, despite the fact that their stories are so intertwined, their serendipitous meeting didn’t occur until they’d both returned to Queens from the Netherlands. They had graduated around the same time and met at their first job as physical therapists, when they started working at a practice in Forest Hills. “When we met each other, we realized that we both studied physical therapy in the Netherlands at the same time, in the same program, but were at different campuses in different cities,” Serras said. “We immediately hit it off and became friends and started hanging out and always talked about opening up our own office.” After they worked at the Forest Hill practice for about seven years, they decided to take the leap. With the help and guidance of fellow physical therapist Alex Sherman, who had recently opened up his own office in the Bronx, Serras and Ramirez opened Triboro PT — and they’re still going strong 12 years later. According to their website, their practice specializes in all orthopedic and neurological disorders, including post surgical, back and neck pain, sports injuries, balance and gait disturbances, work related injuries, automobile injuries and more. The two were drawn to the Netherlands for largely similar reasons, not the least of which is the quality of physical care that the Dutch are renowned for. “When I started applying to physical therapy programs I saw that there was this program for

American students to go study physical therapy in the Netherlands and upon graduation come back to the USA and work for an agency here,” Serras said. “The Dutch are very well known and respected in the field of physical therapy and manual therapy.” “I first found out about the program in the Netherlands from an advertisement in a PT journal that I saw while working as a physical therapy aide in Forest Hills,” Ramirez explained. “[T]he program sounded like it was a great opportunity to study in Europe, get a great education, as well as do some traveling.” But when it was time for the two to settle down to a career in the United States, neither had any doubt that they wanted to return to Queens. “Being born to Greek immigrant parents and growing up Greek American, Astoria was always the Greek capital outside of Greece,” Serras said. “As young kids, we always came to Astoria to visit family, go shopping with my parents at the Greek grocery stores, butcher shops, and bakeries. I remember coming to Astoria Pool as a kid with my summer camp.” As a teenager and young adult, Serras has fond memories of watching cool cars drive
by Astoria Park and visiting Greek cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs in the area. “I always loved Astoria from a young kid until now,” he said. "Today I love the diversity you find in Astoria along with the influx of the young people who have moved in, which has led to the opening of so many great restaurants, bars, cafes and stores.” And given that their practice has been going strong for over 12 years, it seems that Astoria has responded well to Triboro PT. “Opening up any business is always a challenge and can take a while to be successful or can also fail in a short time,” Serras said. “I think the fact that we have been

open for 12 years is a great indication that we have been successful. It has been a long, slow and steady journey.” Initially, most of Triboro PT’s patients came from the neighborhood, community referrals and doctors. “Over the years, the more patients we see, word has spread about our office, and the MDs in the area have gotten great feedback from our patients about our office and the care we provide,” Serras said. “Nothing is more satisfying than when we see patients refer their parents or grandparents. We see a lot of repeat patients and family and friends of patients, which makes us feel good that we are providing good care, and that our patients are happy with our care.” Ramirez and Serras wanted to create a practice where people would feel like more than just a name on a calendar. “I feel like coming to Triboro PT is like going to a small, family-owned business,” Serras said. “We are a small office that patients enjoy coming to. Everybody knows each other. Many patients who come end up seeing neighbors, friends, or people they recognize from the community.” Every patient at Triboro PT gets treated by either Ramirez and Serras, and they make an effort not to overbook appointments or

Cookies that Count LIC’s Coffeed teams with autistic baker for a special cookie sale benefiting autism programs By BILL PARRY @BILLPARRY3

he team at Coffeed along with Julia’s Kitchen, which Maidman runs, will bake chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies. The sweet treats are on sale now through the end of April, which is Autism Awareness Month, online at JuliasCookies.org and at Coffeed locations across the city. “Julia, our master baker, is delighted to share her delicious cookies, the result of great devotion, hard work and the desire to ‘bake’ us happy,” Maidman’s mother Arlene said. “This has been her passion since she took her first cooking class three years ago.” Proceeds from the cookie sales will benefit Next for Autism and Coffeed’s longtime community partner, Community Mainstreaming. Next for Autism is a nonprofit that creates and supports innovative programs for individuals with autism and their families nationally, while Community Mainstreaming is a Long Island-based nonprofit

Coffeed, the Long Island City-based philanthropic artisanal coffee company, is teaming up with Julia Maidman, a 20-yearold with autism and a passion for baking, to produce and sell thousands of cookies to bring hope to families and people of all ages who are living with autism. that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities lead meaningful, productive lives within their communities through individualized and person centered supports for home and work. “Julia has shown that it’s possible for young adults with autism to learn skills that could lead to purposeful work,” Next for Autism President Ilene Lainer said. “Young adults with autism face significant hurdles to employment. They lack training and the proper supports to help them thrive. That’s the reason Next for Autism is intently focused on creating programs that empower young adults with choices and opportunities to fulfill their potential and become participating members of our community.” Frank “Turtle” Raffaele and a group of friends started Coffeed in 2012 as a forprofit business with a charitable component, with 5 to 10 percent of its gross revenue going to charities such as the Refugee and Immigrant Fund based in
Astoria, the New York Foundling and City Growers. In addition to supporting charitable organizations, Coffeed staffs its locations with the people they serve. “We are committed to hiring people in the community with disabilities,” Raffaele said. Each Sunday for the past six months, Coffeed co-founder Abe King picks up Maidman and other young cooks from their home and brings them to the company’s industrial kitchen in Long Island City, where they produce the cookies. “Owners and managers need to realize they are in a meaningful position that can make a difference in the lives of this group and at the same time bring tremendous benefits to themselves and their business,” King said. “People with disabilities have tremendous untapped abilities. We all have, or will have, disabilities at some point in our lives and the humanity we show others is what counts.” APRIL 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

small breed of dog with tons of personality is holding on to the top spot as the most popular dog breed in Queens. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently released their 2018 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in New York City. The French bulldog topped the list as the most popular dog breed in Queens, particularly in Astoria, in 2018. In fact, the French bulldog held tightly the top spot in the top 10 most popular breeds not just in Queens, but in the entire city in 2018. “The Frenchie held on tightly to the top spot once again in NYC,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “It’s no surprise that French bulldogs topped the charts in the Big Apple – this adaptable breed fits right in to big city living.” Revi Simmons, founder of the LIC Frenchies meetup group, thinks French bulldogs are so popular for several reasons: “Frenchies are a friendly, loving and laid-back pups,” Simmons said. “They get along with each other and with kids. They also love sleeping and relaxing and do not require a lot of exercise, which works with a busy lifestyle New Yorkers usually have. Plus, their size makes them perfect for an NYC apartment. And most importantly, you must admit ... who can resist them?! They are so cute!” She founded the meetup group five years ago with her husband, Tyler, after adopting their first French bulldog, Kelev,

who is deaf and currently 5 years old. “I took him to Gantry Park Dog Run and met other families that had Frenchies,” Simmons said. “We started meeting in the park every week for a play date, taking pictures of the puppies having fun. From week to week our group grew, and I realized I needed a platform to share these pictures and more information about our meetups.” Since then, Simmons has adopted another deaf Frenchie (Leeloo, currently 4 years old), “because one Frenchie is never enough.” The LIC Frenchie community is special because “we all share the love for the squishy faced pups. We absolutely cannot resist them,” Simmons said. “That love brought all of us together, and from random people that meet in the park, we became a family. We do events together,
spend holidays with each other and stick together through highs and lows.” Other breeds that earned a place on the top 10 list in Queens include bulldogs, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, poodles, rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers, the Maltese and the Havanese. Other breeds that were popular in New York City in 2018 included the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Welsh Pembroke Corgi and the Australian Shepherd. For more information about the American Kennel Club, visit www.akc.org. To learn more about LIC Frenchies, visit their Instagram, @licfrenchies. tepping into Ellen Costa and John Michalak’s new apartment in Long Island City feels like a ray of sunshine — literally and figuratively. nia, have been together for 14 years (they met in middle school!) and married for five. They originally moved to New York for work: Costa now works in digital marketing for Bloomingdale’s and Michalak is at Morgan Stanley. The duo and their little Yorkie-Shih Tzu, Delaney, moved to Long Island City almost a year ago and have created a Pinterestworthy space perfect for their little family.

Costa took the reins on the design front — it’s a passion of hers and something she’s developing into a side business, along with wedding planning (check her out at ellecurates.com). “In more recent years, I’ve really geared toward mid-century modern,” Costa said, “but I like to pull from different inspirations. Emily Henderson is one of my favorites; I love everything she does. I love Joanna Gaines. I love the natural elements in her space — the little pops of wood.” That’s not to say Michalak’s preferences weren’t part of the process, too. Their combined tastes have created a polished

mid-century look, accented with geometric shapes, metallic finishes and lots of color. “If it’s got a gold finish, she’s happy, and if it’s got an angular shape, then it works for me, too,” Michalak said, “so that’s kind of how we arrived here.” At the center of the living room sits a circular, gold-edged glass coffee table topped with Joanna Gaines’ “Magnolia Table” and a “Homesick” New York scented candle. It’s surrounded by a plush, light blue couch, a white floor pouf and Costa’s grandmother’s chair from the ‘50s that she’s covered with a knit blanket. A diamond-framed shelf from Urban Outfitters and a prism plant holder decorate the
walls, framing the TV. But the focal point of the living room is a large fig leaf tree. “It was really important to me to have a bit of greenery in every room,” Costa said. “It brings so much more warmth into every space,” Michalak added. Costa’s love for color is seen in the living room rug, full of pinks, oranges and blues. But her true design style is especially apparent in her home office adjacent to the living space. “Obviously, this space is really pink and girly,” Costa said. “It was really nice — John kind of let me take charge and do what I want in this space. It’s where I go to get inspired.”
It really is a creative haven. It’s outfitted with a daybed (which turns into a real bed for visiting relatives) and a desk area. The huge arched window bathes the space in light. “The starting point was this rug,” Costa explained. “I saw it on Lulu and Georgia and I knew I had to have it. It was on my Pinterest board before we knew we were moving.” The pink and blue rug has a Southwestern feel that the rest of the room mimics. Costa said she was inspired by the color and old Hollywood glamor of Palm Springs. “It’s my favorite place to be, so I like to bring a little bit of that Southwest kind of feel into my design,” Costa said. “I love cacti

and anything with fringe and kind of bohemian, so it’s definitely eclectic.” Her desk was originally a plain white piece from Ikea, but you’d never know it. She spray-painted the legs gold and finished the top with marble contact paper. “If I see something I like online, usually I’ll try it myself first,” Costa said. A mirror sits on the desk, surrounded by images that inspire Costa: The Parker in Palm Springs, a Barbara Streisand record and an old photograph of her grandmother singing. “She was very into interior design, so I think that’s where I get my eye from, my inspiration,” Costa said, “so that’s why I wanted to make sure I had her in this space too.” A white dresser across from the desk acts as Costa’s closet. “That’s where we had to get a little creative with the space,” she said. “We have great front closet space, but not a lot in our bedroom and I have a lot of clothes, so we needed a solution.” Next to the office, their bedroom has matching arched windows. “That was very important to me, having a lot of natural light,” Costa said. “The arched windows sold us on this apartment.” But the most impressive thing about this room is the grey ombre wall. Costa and Michalak painted it themselves using three different shades of grey paint and wet paper towels.

“I knew that I wanted to do a really highimpact statement wall,” Costa said. “Wallpaper for this sized wall is very expensive, so we’re like, what can we do that’s a little more cost-effective but will still give you that ‘wow’ factor?” “It was really satisfying to see it dry exactly how we wanted it,” Michalak said. They kept the bedspread and headboard light in contrast to the wall and hung a hexagonal metal piece of art above the bed, striking a nice balance. On the opposite wall hangs an ornate gold mirror, also an heirloom from Costa’s grandmother. Underneath is another old photograph of her next to a second Streisand record. There are two other statement walls in their apartment: their entryway and a column in the living room, both decorated using peel-and-stick wallpaper. “We didn’t realize how hard it was going to be, but we’re really happy we did it because it was just plain white, so having that pop really makes a difference,” Costa said. They chose a dark pattern for the column and a striking light blue pattern for the entryway, where one of their most prized pieces sits: the alter from their wedding, a gorgeous, antique-looking white piece. “We try to keep this is all of our spaces,” Michalak said. “It’s just such a special piece that we need to find a room for it,” Costa added. They have seamlessly incorporated old, meaningful pieces into their predominantly modern apartment. For Costa, design is all about what inspires you and feels right for your space. “I don’t really care what brand it is,” Costa said. “If it works in the space, it works.” APRIL 2019 I BOROMAG.COM
