Dear Western Queens, The beauty of living in Queens is the ability to find something new every day. This issue we explore Long Island City. The rapid growth in this neighborhood is breathtaking from the waterfront park to the arts to new high rises taking shape throughout the community. It was exactly one year ago that I kicked off LIC Flea with the belief in this neighborhood. The 4th annual LIC Arts Open last month shed light on over 250 artists in 54 venues and was the most successful one to date. LIC has the momentum and community activists making it not only a first class neighborhood to live in but one to welcome visitors. Art and artists are a big part of the culture in Western Queens and we’ve made sure to bring you a young up and coming musician who made an impressive video on the subways of Astoria as JOSHUA SCHNEPS well as a talented graphic designer bringing portraits to life. With summer here and the weather publisher heating up we all start to think about getting in shape. Our very own Hayley Bridgewater gets kicked into shape at Astoria’s Sage Studios run by a young entrepreneur. We have also highlighted some local attractions and finds as well as you guessed it…delicious food! Enjoy the beginning of the summer season as we have all waited a long time for it to finally start! Omakase Story + Images

“Ohhhhh, you are going to love the omakase,” LuLu confidently and sweetly proclaims the very second I step past the neon blue glowing waterfall in the entryway. “It is very special, and I think the chef has created something extraordinary”. As she guides me through the bamboo partitioned tables toward a seat near the sushi counter, she continues, “May I get you something to drink like an iced green tea?” I am always astounded that the face at the hostess stand is always someone different, and yet almost always says hello, calling me by name. It is a culture that is reflective of the continent from which this food comes, but also a distinctive trait of the staff at JJ’s Asian fusion in Astoria. From the warm greeting to the line of chefs chiming goodbye in unison, it never feels fake or efforted—100% genuine. The same goes for the food at JJ’s, which has been one of my favorite sushi destinations for several years. The modest space has grown in many ways since its inception. Aptly named JJ’s Asian Fusion, this cozy restaurant unassumingly tucked on 31st Avenue 6 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

features an oftentimes French culinary approach to a marriage of a multiplicity of Pan-Asian cuisines. The restaurant’s namesake, J.J. Lin, brings both her Shanghainese heritage and training at the French Culinary Institute to create an artistic array of dishes that dexterously satisfy both sushi purists and fusion enthusiasts. For several years the location was a take-out noodle shop called JJ’s Grand Tofu, but nearly a decade ago was transformed into the current restaurant by J.J. and her husband, Richard Lin. Within the past few years Phil Chen has taken over the kitchen as Executive Chef. And although my gut instinct is to order a steamer of dimsum and some koosh-ball shaped shumai—the noodles spring out from the meatballs like a sea anemone—I sigh and refrain, knowing that very soon I will be diving into a carefully and lovingly orchestrated omakase tasting with which the chef has been experimenting for a long time. Yesterday was the day he introduced it to the public, and so I wanted to be one of the first to try out his masterpiece.

In the Japanese language, omakase can be translated to me, “I will leave it up to you.” Phil Chen, the Executive Chef at JJ’s is the owner of one beautifully gifted set of hands that are more than capable of the task. I am more excited for this particular dinner than a five year old is at Christmastime. An amuse bouche arrives a split second after my tea. Crisped rice is serve as an upscale version of popcorn, with a meticulously arranged tray of various colored salts as an accompaniment. Crushed red peppercorns, pink salt crystals, and a house blend of herbs awaken my palate. Octopus arrives on a plate with an heirloom tomato dangling from its branch. Served as a ceviche, the sauce is blended with passion fruit, jalapeno, wasabi, and garlic. It is impressively tender, and each bite offers its own pleasure. But the next course is one of those dishes I have pondered a hundred times over since the end of that last course.

It is a sea urchin parfait, with creamy, plump, decadent uni from Santa Barbara that forms the first layer accompanied by some delicately smoked salmon. Stacked above that is a sea kale and sake gelatin that slowly melts into a savory broth. But the whole dish is crowned with crushed cocoa, and tiny crystals of shredded ice made from tangy green tomatillos. It is playful, sweet, tart, cool, crunchy, and a full range of what seems like hundreds of playful combinations I have never before experienced. For the next course, the chef does a riff on a tartare, blending elements of Japan and Greece. Botan ebi is tossed with tsatsiki and a citrus champagne vinegar, all crowned with the glistening poached yolk of a quail egg. Abalone is prepared sous vide, then served with a foam of coconut, kaffir lime juice, and kosher salt. The cooking technique traps in the juices and renders them into a broth of the ocean.

FOOD

For a guest who wants to try this on her own, you can order five courses for $70 or 7 courses for $120 with a 24 hour advanced preparation. And the regular menu is always available to order with no advanced notice. If you ask nicely, they will even serve up one of the chef ’s special rolls not listed on the menu, the House Special Tempura Roll. Filled with yellowtail, smoked salmon, and cream cheese, the entire roll is dipped in tempura batter, and lightly fried. Imagine a Japanese take on a bagel with lox, the cream cheese warm and melted into a rich sauce that beautifully accentuates the smoky, salty, fish. It may take a moment to get used to the warm maki, but once you do, this is certain to become a favorite.

A second tartare arrives broken down, allowing the diner to pair his own flavors. A slender board of sashimi grade diced tuna arrives with chopped wasabi, crisped bits of tiny rice, a peppery aioli, wasabi kissed tempura flakes, and pieces of tomato and avocado. Each bite blends a different harmony, and offers a new profile. It is not unlike a wildly sophisticated Fun Dip, and I laugh as I mix ingredients. The rich and tender slices of hamachi practically fall apart under my chopsticks. A fish with a high oil content, it is nearly futile to dip it in soy sauce, which stubbornly beads up and rolls off. So it’s brilliant that this appetizer is topped with a reduction of white wine as well as bulbs of garlic and pearl onions that cut the richness of the dish, all beneath earthy maitaki mushrooms. I inhale a deep breath before the final course, making extra room for dessert. A Tofu cheesecake arrives with a kumquat compote. On the side is a quenelle of apple miso sorbet with crushed pistachios, reminiscent of a traditional preparation of mochi served in Japan. It is sweet and buttery and fantastically umami, and it is the perfect ending to a meal that has truly exceeded all expectations.

The Secret Garden When Mackenzi Farquer puts her mind to something, she doesn’t just do it. She does it brilliantly. For years, Site was one of the top home furnishing stores in not only Astoria, but also in the city. So what did Mackenzi decide to do? Start up a second and third blog to highlight the happenings in Sunnyside and Long Island City to round out We Heart Astoria, which she writes with Meg Cotner and Judith Klein? Sure, but why not move her store to a much larger, centrally located space in the heart of Astoria just off the Broadway train stop. She did that last year, and already the time has come for something to take it to the next level. Because Mackenzi never visualized her store as merely a place to find unique, eccentric gifts and clothing, why not also open up the backyard as a garden throughout the summer, so that guests can browse outside for potted plants and vegetables and herbs while sipping on coffee and noshing on pastries? That is precisely what Ms. Farquer has achieved with The Secret Garden, Lockwood’s chic outdoor coffee stand, with java provided by Native

Coffee Roasters. Opening weekend saw a packed backyard filled with caffeinated beverages, vegan pastries, potted succulents, and homemade baked pastries all in a sunken garden filled with comfy patio furniture and a rustic communal high top table. Guests sip on iced lattes while perusing a cautiously edited selection of plants. And of course everything is eco-friendly. The long term hope is that there will be several events and activities hosted throughout the summer, including terrarium workshops and courses for kids. But the space is also available to rent throughout the week for personal parties, showers, and private events. Stop by on a Saturday or Sunday between 10am and 5pm, and be sure to bring along some extra money to spend. The only thing not-so-secret about this garden is that it guarantees you are going to find something that grabs you to take home. 23-15 33rd St, Astoria, NY lockwoodshop.com

When Fatty’s announced it was moving almost a year ago, Astorians— and just New Yorkers in general—were devastated, and also worried that a reopening would not in fact happen. Last month, however, Suzanne and Fernando proved everyone wrong, when they opened their new location. The new space maintains all of the chill island vibe of the former, with just a little more pinache. Stereo speakers form a wall separating the front bat from the main dining room, wjich is lined with funky pieces of art. A patio is expected to open soon, where guests can be transported to an island getaway. A simple blue box lights up above Fatty’s Cafe, a restaurant with a storefront that indicates not even a hint of the oasis waiting beyond the front doors. Inside, you are likely to find an eclectic myriad of Astorians most likely chatting casually over a mojito with Suzanne or Fernando, the couple who own and run this off-the-beaten-path gem. Contrary to the misleading name, the website describes Fatty’s as a healthy grill... a place to chill... Apparently the name is derived from a term of endearment between Suzanne and Fernando. Though a Latindriven menu, Fernando explained to us that if he sees a recipe he likes, it will probably appear on the menu, whether Latin, Asian, or any other culinary influence. If he likes it, he makes it. Because he’s built a menu around recipes he loves, you most definitely taste that in the food, and feel it in the air. When we walked in yesterday, it instantly reminded me of one of the numerous laid back island bars of the U.S. Virgin Islands, a casual yet attentive server, a laughing bartender, and a staff that seemed to know the entire clientele. It was as if we had stumbled onto the familiar beach patio of a longtime friend, and every single care in the world had blown right out the door on the cool spring breeze that was dancing through the dining room to the silky croonings of Sade overhead. A trio of empanadas (chicken, beef, & cheese) were some of the best around... crispy yet moist, with deliciously seasoned, juicy fillings. Someone at your table simply has to order the contraband chicken. Tender breasts of chicken are stuffed with pico de gallo and 14 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

chedder, wrapped in crispy bacon, blanketed with cheese and a mole barbecue sauce. Hands down, the most delicious, sweet, yet savory mole I have ever enjoyed. With the fusion of barbecue sauce, it was chocolaty, tangy, and smoky. The caramelized plantains were crisp to the bite, yet beautifully tender and sweet inside. The chocolate tres leches was an absolute slice of sweetened milk heaven. My lunch date laughed when I likened it to a gourmet twist on Count Chocula cereal, but it was like a childhood memory soaked up into a cake with glistening cherry on top. Everything at Fatty’s made us smile and feel like a kid on vacation, from the food to the jovial atmosphere. Any time I can’t afford a trip to the Caribbean but am craving a relaxed vacation meal, you can certainly bet I will be walking a few blocks out of the way to stop by Fatty’s Cafe. If it were any closer to my apartment, I would absolutely be a regular. While we miss the talented staff of Stove, its former tenant, we know they have passed it on to some wonderful new owners who have made it their own, and will make you feel like it is yours also. And whatever you do, try the mojito or add on one of the drunken sticks of fruit to your beverage. Those drinks are a vacation all by themselves. 45-17 28th Ave.

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

Five

Stories and One Happy Ending

One of the most promising new developments in Long Island City is the revitalization of the five story space known as the Falchi Building, located at 31-00 47th Ave. in Long Island City. Occupying over 600,000 square feet formerly used as a warehouse by the late great Gimbels department store, and named after the famous Brazilian handbag designer, the Falchi Building is not far from the heart of L.I.C. or the nearby student population of LaGuardia Community College. The hope of Jamestown, the developers of the Falchi Building—as well as 530 Fifth and Chelsea Market in Manhattan—is that the food-focused ground level concourse will serve as a drawing point for the building’s employees, as well as visitors and neighbors from all over the city. Presently, a pop-up food counter called the Lunch Box is home to a handful of vendors who are serving unique, handmade, gourmet goods on weekdays, ranging from a Paraguayan empanada and pastry stand with guavajammed cake rolls, to a Jamaican barbecue counter, a DJ who makes pies in glass jars (called Made from Scratch) and serves chocolate-coated strips of bacon, and there is even a stand for the Vendy Award-winning Khao Man Gai NY, serving some sweet variations of Thai iced tea, as well as traditional rice and chicken, and now a special brothless version of Tom Yum Noodles. The rice noodles are generously tossed in a spicy thai chili mixture, and loaded with slices of fish cake, like little seafood meatballs. The khao man gai itself sounds deceitfully simple, but each tray packs one of the most savory punches around. The jasmine rice soaks up the chicken fat from the poaching liquid, and the dish sings of cilantro and pandan leaves, creating a fascinating umami bouquet. While the United Nations meets on the upper floors, and the Juice Press readies their space for an opening in the near future down below, Artisinal Fromagerie is in the process of making the Falchi building their own slice of heaven. Soon, visitors will be able to witness the aging process from glass windows in the hallway. Much of the building is still available for potential occupants, and sundrenched rooms and hallways fill the loft-like spaces with promising offices and studios ripe for new entrepreneurs. It is an exciting time for Long Island City, and the Falchi Building is a lovely marriage of the old with the new, offering a space for both. And knowing that we can now enjoy our favorite thai street foods during the weekday as well as at the flea, well that’s reason enough alone to pay the Falchi a visit.

Urban Walkabout: long island city STORY

Lizabeth Nieves

There is a strange dichotomy between warm weather and living in a city. The nicer the weather becomes, the stronger the impulse for outdoor spaces and a closer proximity to water. One can follow the rest of the city to the Hamptons or the Rockaways—or you can seek refuge in a few unexpected places nearby. A walkabout in Long Island City brought us to these amazing venues.

Anable Basin Sailing Bar and Grill (4-40

44th Dr., Long Island City) is an unexpected oasis at the end of an industrial road. The bar is next to and named after an inlet that was carved in 1868, thus named after Henry Sheldon Anable, a prominent figure in local business and politics at the time of the basin’s creation. Anable Basin Sailing bar and Grill is a simple outdoor space with stunning views facing the skyline of Manhattan, with temperatures that are at least 10 degrees cooler here on a hot summer day. Large picnic tables line the waterfront, where one can eat off the grill and drink cold beers (and freshly muddled mojitos!). This hidden gem still feels undiscovered and unpretentious. There is an ATM on site as it is cash only. Random fact: When the basin was created, a mastodon bone was found on the site. www.anabelbasin.com

Take a turn along Vernon Blvd to 46th avenue and start strolling up Center Boulevard. The walk will take you alongside the waterfront to Gantry State Park. Constructed in 1998, the park is ever growing and changing, and expected to be 40 acres when completed. The park is truly beautiful, with plenty of greenery and benches to nap on. Check out the basketball courts, playgrounds, handball courts, and a fishing pier with its own cleaning table. Bring your camera and explore the rugged waterfront that merges a lush park with the city. During the summer, keep an ear out for live music, and with the fireworks returning to the East River this July 4th – this is the best place to view them. www. Long gantrypark.com The view from the Island City ferry.

Further up on 54th Avenue and 2nd Street, take the East River Ferry at the Hunters Point South stop. The ferry travels to Greenpoint, North and South Williamsburg, DUMBO/ Brooklyn Bridge Park, Wall Street, and Governors Island. $12 on the weeks takes you roundtrip up and down the waterfront. Sit up top and take in the view of all the bridges and skyscrapers while feeling the sun on your skin. It’s a great way to see the boroughs from a different perspective. THE ARTS

Jake Genen is a graphic designer and creator of unique, anamorphic, tintype-style portraits.

Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man Interview + Images

Lizabeth Nieves

My mother is an art teacher, so right off the bat I was brought into a lot of art. I have memories at 4 years, and my mother was at an ashram and doing life drawings, and I was running around watching people paint. I drew and painted all through elementary, junior high, and high school. I drew comic books as a kid. Toys and everything and anything. I was really big into horror movies as a kid, and I wanted to become a horror movie effects person. Then my mom’s friend was a scenic painter, so by high school I knew you could live and work as an artist. I always knew art was where it was at. I went to college at FIT and studied ad design, and was in the first class of animation. It was a good school. I worked through college, and designed a lot of t-shirts. I worked at Brooklyn Mint, which was Biggies T-shirt line, and I worked at Roc a Wear for while. I also designed socks for a French company. I had a t-shirt company in high school and college called Small Minds. The first year that I worked at Tim Hunter Design, I had a lot of free time. One day I found a lot of old images and thought, oh these are cool. I stuck a crawfish on a General. I was like, this is neat. I printed it big and then forgot about it for a year. Then I came back to it and I started buying images. At first I started with digital images, and then I started buying tintypes from eBay and flea markets. I like going to the New York Library and researching images also. The ball started rolling, and I started getting different images, and the idea was to become a street artist, and print big, and take up walls. I was a wimp to do it because everyone I know who did street art did an overnight. I just kept with it and started getting a good response. I’ve been creating the images for nine or ten years now. I like researching and finding as many weird animals as I can. Like the aye aye monkey which has really long fingers and big eyes. I look at a tintype and just feel it out. I look at a person and think, that person kind of looks like an owl. I try to find the animal that matches the person. I also sketch a little, and I have painted. Out of all the graphic work that I do, this is the only thing not overseen by art directors. It’s all mine. It’s a little story in my head. All the names of the portraits are derived from the names they come from. I’ve created about 40 something pictures at the point. I feel like you need 200 to make a book.

View Jake’s art at www.jakegstudios.com 24 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

What’s next for me? Keep on producing pieces—and I have an idea that instead of doing animorphic tintypes, I want to start doing animal based wood creatures. My next big project is having a daughter, due November 7th, and that’s pretty major!

FOOD

Tiny Drumsticks owners, Connie Sun and Benjamin Sloan

They beat to a different tiny drumstick Starting up a business anywhere can be a real challenge, but especially right here in New York City. Even if you have a unique idea, and the skill to execute it, and the money to see it through, and the time to wait for permits, and the budget for advertising, and the perfect location in a sweet neighborhood, and an ideal space to serve your fantastic treats to the public, and the pots and pans in which to prepare those treats, and the oven that will perfectly heat those pots and pans, and the salamander under which to crisp the cheese, and the containers in which to store and label the food, and fridge in which to store the food overnight, and… well, you get the idea. Connie Sun was an aspiring chef who harbored dreams of her own place, selling her unique Asian street food at food fairs in Brooklyn. But as that dream became an exceedingly popular reality, Connie realized she would need a space where her small company could grow. “Getting a business off the ground efficiently and legally is tough for a vagabond chef. That story inspired us to create a place where you can hang your apron without breaking the bank,” explains Connie, who has now partnered with Benjamin Sloan to create Tiny Drumsticks. “A brand spanking new, sparkly clean and spacious kitchen stocked with shiny, state-of-the-art appliances,” explains the website. “We’ve laid the groundwork so all you have to do is show up and cook like you mean it. Dreams do come true.” Their pristine 3,000 sq. ft. kitchen provides all of the equipment you need to thrive in an immaculate space that ensures your business meets strict health code standards. In fact, Tiny Drumsticks holds only the sixth permit of its kind. Essentially, Connie and Benjamin are trailblazers in

30 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

the field of turning aspiring chefs into culinary rockstars. In comparison with other kitchens that offer similar services, “we are structured with much more flexibility—you don’t have to rent in 8 hour blocks or pay a cancellation fee within a week of your scheduled time,” smiles Ben. Tiny Drunsticks is presently home to seventeen tenants, “and we have room for a few more,” laughs Connie. “We accept basically three types of clients,” explains Ben. “You can book a permanent space with a flat rate and lots of freedom, or you can book hourly with storage, or hourly without.” Ideally, the two young entrepreneurs would like to house four or five solid companies, and help them cultivate their business. One of their clients, Anita’s Yogurt, has almost grown out of their space, now selling at Whole Foods in the city. “We are so excited for her,” explains Connie, who says she didn’t start the kitchen up for the money, but rather to see all of her clients succeed. Tiny drumsticks is also home to Frittering Away, the lemonade ladies from the Astoria and LIC Flea. “Right now, we just want to stay affordable and flexible for our clients,” says Connie. “We own the space, but I actually use it just like anyone else. I think there is a real benefit to working with someone who knows where you are coming from.” Tiny Drumsticks 48-18 Van Dam Street, Long Island City, NY. 11101 718.392.9092

The New

FiDi? STORY

Austin Christopher Bradley

What characterizes an NYC neighborhood? Is it the housing it offers, the history and culture that it embodies, or the landmarks within its borders? I would say that any one, or all, of those options would be a viable source for determining how to describe a neighborhood. Now, how do we characterize a new neighborhood? If we look at Long Island City now, like most neighborhoods, we will not see the same Long Island City we saw 30 years ago. LIC was an industrial hub in the U.S. until the decline in manufacturing, which began in the 1970’s. As the industries of LIC faded, the artists of NYC moved in and claimed the industrial loft spaces as their own community after the opening of P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center. Walking through LIC today, we get a sense of what the neighborhood was, but also we get a glimpse of what it is going to be. The artistic history of the standalone hood speaks through MoMa P.S. 1 and the now whitewashed 5Pointz. We can also settle into industrial memories by walking down most side streets, between large garages and seemingly abandoned warehouses.

32 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

Determining where the neighborhood is going can be done from the outside looking inward. The LIC skyline, seen from Manhattan’s east side, is beginning to tell a story of its own. The story it tells is more comparable to that of exclusive luxury living, for which the neighborhood is now becoming known. Hi-rise buildings with large windows, lush rooftops, and exciting amenities have begun to take shape against the New York sky, and industrial spaces have begun development for more commercial business use. The shoreline that was once just another rock formation that caught the city’s trash has been transformed into one of the most beautiful parks that NYC has to offer, with arguably the best view of Manhattan. It is not impossible to draw comparisons between Manhattan’s Financial District and the Queens neighborhood known as Long Island City. Starting with the outdoor characteristics, both places are right on the water. LIC resting directly on the East River and FiDi wedged between the Hudson and East Rivers. Enjoying the views in FiDi can be done from South Street Seaport, whereas some of the best views in Queens are from Gantry State Park.

Rock Rose Luxury Apartment in LIC

We can also draw a comparison to the liveliness of both neighborhoods. While FiDi is considerably more developed and historical than LIC, they would both be considered “quieter” places to live. In both places, the majority of the real estate that is offered in the area is that of higher end, luxury living, most with extensive amenities. For the last several years, the Financial District has been the destination for the New Yorker seeking luxury living at a discount price. Construction in the area has added to the already annoying effort of transporting in the neighborhood, and the nightlife scene is almost non-existent, which makes for an extremely packed and bustling neighborhood during the day and somewhat of a ghost town at night. It is not one of the most desired neighborhoods in the city, which has made it difficult to keep the large number of luxury buildings at capacity. In turn, the cost of living in these buildings has been significantly less expensive than comparable units in more desired areas. This has been great for luxury consumers looking to get more bang for their budget. What we are seeing now, as the rest of the city fills to capacity, is that these excess units in these buildings are beginning filling up. The

apartment prices are inching more and more to the fair market value of more desirable neighborhoods. The average price of renting a studio apartment in the Financial District in 2010 was $2,043/mo, whereas today it is $2,800/ mo. Finding a luxury studio apartment

in LIC will be lighter on the prospective renters’ wallets, with the average LIC studio apartment renting for $2,300/mo. According to Suitey.com, there are currently almost 100 units for rent in Long Island City. With everything from movie screening rooms to indoor pools, rooftop decks, and tenant workout facilities, LIC’s hi-end buildings are reminiscent of self-contained cities. When these buildings were first being constructed

in the earlier 2000s, developers had to make them rich in amenities to entice potential renters to live there. It most certainly worked. So much of the new appeal of the area lies in the lower cost of apartments, the quick commute into the city, and the comfort of living in new construction. This year, the neighborhood will likely see over 2,000 more apartments hit the market in the now thriving neighborhood. As the spread of these cruiseship-like buildings takes hold, we will see much of old LIC wither, and it is most likely for the best. As beautiful new construction building create a new skyline for Queens, developers will need new places to build and will be paying big bucks for the land that those warehouses are using. We will also likely start to see bidding wars for air rights so that the views that tenants pay such high dollar for are not obstructed by newer buildings. While there are definite similarities between FiDi and LIC, Long Island City will continue to take on characteristics that are distinctly its own. As more people come to Queens to seek out a home on the East River, we will see a stronger effort to preserve the artistic history of the area and brand it as a unique spot to call home in a city that never stays the same. FOOD

Get on the boat When Pye Boat Noodle opened last month in Astoria, it joined the ranks of several Queens restaurants that are making Thai one of the most popular cuisines in Western Queens. From their neighbors at Leng Thai, to Enthaice, Red Basil, Thai Elephant, Three E, Tuk Tuk, Khao Man Gai, and even SriPraPhai, there are quite a variety of places to order your favorite dish. So we stopped by to chat with owner Bert Siriboon and his wife, Chef Thorn Siriboon, and we brought along our camera and some empty stomachs to see what makes Pye Boat so special. Besides specializing in authentic preparation of a noodle named after a pedal boat, they have also mastered some pretty delicious versions of Thai street food. THE ARTS

H

e’s an old soul with an old sentimentality that somehow pours out through a fresh, vibrant voice that make him relevant and exciting to enjoy as one of NYC’s newcomers. He sings, tap dances, and makes an impressive video on the subways of Astoria. This month BORO checked in with Charliemac (Charles MacEachern) to discuss the release of his new EP, Hooks in Me, which just came out last weekend on iTunes and CDBaby. This Scottish-born, Canadian-raised, Astoriaaged young musician is poised and ready to make his mark on the scene.

How long have you lived in Astoria? Almost four years. It was the first place I lived when I moved to New York in 2007. I moved into Manhattan for a while, but it wasn’t long before I was craving Astoria again. I came back 2 years ago, and I don’t think I’ll ever leave. What is one place you take anyone visiting Astoria? The Ministar Diner on the corner of Steinway and 30th. It’s wonderful. Favorite place to get a cup o’ joe? I love grabbing a coffee at the Gian Piero Bakery on my corner, and sitting on their benches outside. So nice to just sit and watch Astoria go by. Favorite place to shake off the stress? Planet Fitness on Steinway Favorite private sanctuary? Probably my bedroom. I have a pretty neat collection of vintage things scattered around, and after lighting some candles, and putting on an old record, it’s like taking a trip back in time. I love it. If Astoria were a song, what would it be, and who’d be singing it? “The Summerwind” sang by Frank Sinatra. When you’re walking down 30th Avenue, and there’s a gentle breeze coming in, it’s close to perfect. It’s only an issue when it blows the smell from the bakery into your face. It’s hard to resist. Where in Astoria do you like to dance? The Irish Rover. They have a Jukebox loaded with good stuff! 40 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

Where do you like to go for a romantic dinner? I took a date to Astoria Beer and Cheese once. It’s pretty casual, but it was lovely. Sitting side by side at the counter, being served cheeses from all of over the world. It was fun, and actually turned out to be pretty romantic. Where is your favorite brunch in Astoria? Haven’t brunched yet, if you can believe it! Most Sundays I’m catching up with Ronnie Nelson at Brooklyn Bagel. One of my best friends, he’s a Queens-based photographer who actually did the shots for my album. What is your favorite delivery order? Has to be Seva Indian Cuisine on 34th— Chicken Tikka Masala. If someone who has never seen you live before is coming to your show, what can they expect? They can expect to be told a story. It might make them laugh. It might make them cry. They’ll smile a lot, and I’d bet money they’ll tap their finger or foot at least once. This EP features some really fun stuff. Classic swing. Rockabilly. Even a little comedy. Describe yourself in three words. An Old School-Goofy-Dreamer. What’s next for you? The EP released on iTunes and CDBaby.com on Memorial Day Weekend - May 26th. Just in time for your summer soundtrack. This summer I’ll be around New York performing my music in different venues. I’d love to see you there.

THE ARTS

Hop on the Art Bus

On May 10, 2014, Socrates Sculpture Park launched a free summer shuttle bus service to promote and connect Long Island City’s cultural institutions, while linking the Western Queens waterfront to a major transit hub at Court Sq. Check out the schedule in yellow as it appears on the web. We decided to visit two of the park’s newest pieces to preview for BORO. But make sure you check out the website at socratessculpturepark.org to see the full list of exhibitions and events, including outdoor cinema starting Wednesdays in July. One of the most astonishing pieces is Scarecrow—a site-specific installation by artist Žilvinas Kempinas and the largest installation in Socrates’ 28-year history. This majestic yet minimal metallic sculpture is comprised of a 250-foot-long, thirteen-foot-high kinetic pathway composed of 200 stainless steel, mirrored poles connecting energetic slopes of silver Mylar ribbon overhead. With two simple elements – poles and tape – Scarecrow activates the invisible forces of nature. Scarecrow reflects its surrounding environment, and therefore will continuously change throughout the exhibition. The perpetual motion of the ribbon, as it responds to the wind of its environment, will echo the natural flowing of the nearby East River, while the mirrored material will reflect momentary shifts of light and sky like a shimmering horizon along the waterfront. The displaced and homeless in New York City have been a most important cause for Dr. Delois Blakely, a U.S. Ambassador of Goodwill to Africa, who has been the Community Mayor of Harlem since she was sworn in by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 1995. And this season, Dr. Blakely serves as the inspiration for Queen Mother, one of the newest installations in Socrates Sculpture Park, which was unveiled on May 11th by Dr. Blakely herself. The interactive exhibit features a monumental, mixed media sculpture of an elegant figure that is peacefully reclining in the shaded southern section of the park overlooking the East River waterfront designed by Pawel Althamer. Originally built as a part Althamer’s Performa Commission in 2013, Queen Mother of Reality at Socrates Sculpture Park will serve as a platform for creative dialogue and interactive programming, reflecting the park’s commitment to engaging audiences through public art. On the perimeter of the park are three of the nation’s largest public housing complexes (Astoria, Ravenswood, and Queensbridge Houses), and the local community has been a park stakeholder since its creation in 1986. Socrates is open 365 days a year from 10am to sunset, and is located at 32-01 Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, Queens at the intersection of Broadway.

BODY & SOUL

A Spotlight

on

STORY

hayley bridgewater

It is true that Sage Studios is not brand new to Queens, nor was it entirely unknown to me. This Astoria Group Training studio is the second outpost for Sage business partners, Jordan Schneider and Daniel Suarez. The first incarnation, Sage Exclusive Fitness, is located in Whitestone, and has been a successful fixture in the Queens fitness community for a number of years.

THE FORMAT

However, there was quite a bit of buzz surrounding the Astoria opening of Sage Studios about a year ago, and the talk never slowed down. I have heard again and again by many friends and acquaintances that I “needed to get my butt down there for a workout or two.” “You will go crazy for the space.” “The format will play to your personality” “You will absolutely love Danny.”

Each workout fits into one of four different categories, allowing the client to pick and choose their particular programming: Upper Body, Lower Body, Core & Cardio, and Total Body. The structure of the class includes mobility exercises, warm-up, strength and cardio circuits, and a cool down/stretch. Each workout is different than the previous one, and constructed by the trainer teaching that session.

I am a little embarrassed that it took me so long to visit, as I live in the neighborhood, but the stars aligned, schedules fell into place, and I was finally able to get that visit. And yes, it was a challenging and energizing experience. Or series of experiences, I should say. I was fortunate to get in a couple of sessions before my deadline, and they were anything but a cakewalk.

For all of you fans of technology out there, Sage utilizes an application called "Member Me". It is free, downloadable, and full of helpful information. Not only can you see the class schedule and register your spot, but also the app has sections for diet tips, at-home or on-the-road workouts, as well as blog posts, and links to health and fitness articles. Upto-date studio news is listed via this app and accompanying social media.

Sage Studios is self-described as a place where boot camp meets personal training. The group training classes are capped at 10 people to offer personal attention and form correction from the trainer, while taking advantage of the motivation provided by working out in a group.

THE SPACE Nestled into the 4th floor of 29-20 23rd Avenue just steps from the Ditmars N, Q stop, Sage Studios is a beautiful, soothing studio, awash with greens and browns, lots of natural light and a large outdoor terrace space. A dancer most of my life, floors have always been important to me. If I am jumping around, I want to make sure that my joints aren’t going to be hollering at me the next morning. I was certainly happy to see that the cushy flooring tiles had quite a bit of give. Bordering the space in a sort of circular set-up, are Concept 2 Rowers, Ski Erg machines, TRX stations, and loads of fitness style kettlebells. The center of the room is outfitted with digital screens and a sound system allowing the trainers to list the circuits for the day and change the playlist at will. Having the focus of the room at the center allowed the entire group to easily interact with the trainer. I never felt unable to see or hear the demonstrations. There are cabinets available for storage of personal belongings during class, as well as an accessible restroom and water cooler.

THE TRAINER Though I know that there are multiple trainers who work out of this location, my sessions were solely with Danny Suarez. Open, engaging, and full of enthusiasm, Danny is a perfect match for this space, style, and format. He is a thorough teacher, taking time to show and explain each exercise, suggest modifications when applicable, and correct form issues when necessary. You can see that he has a great relationship with his clients, and creates an air of excitement, encouragement, and acceptance within the studio. His passion for health and fitness were quite clear to me in our conversations. He clearly lives for this kind of work. Danny is an ACE certified Personal Trainer, a Level 1 Cross Fit Trainer, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. I had the pleasure of working through an Upper Body and Lower Body class on different mornings (even some Core circuits during the photo shoot) and all were blood-pumping, heart thumping workouts that utilized all of the studio equipment, kick-started my morning, and kept me buzzing and energetic throughout the day. I am sure I will be back. A little birdie told me that outdoor boot camps (my favorite) are occasionally thrown into the mix. Interested in checking out a class? Sage does offer a complementary trial session. A perfect way to take that first step and see what they are all about.

BODY & SOUL “I always had a vision of Keeping Kidz Fit and Healthy,” explains Tina Mavrelis Charalambous. That quickly became her slogan, and she knows what it takes to juggle parenting along with the countless unforeseen challenges that arise. When raising not one, but three children, can already be a workout in and of itself, how on earth does a mother pass long a healthy lifestyle to her children? And that’s with a loving husband and teammate in her arsenal. You make it a way of life is precisely what you do. Watching Tina scramble around her studio booking appointments, laughing with one of her sons, and rearranging gym equipment, it’s easy to see that is exactly what she is doing with her business, Gym-Azing, which opened just about four years ago on 23rd Ave in Astoria just a few blocks from Ditmars. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and so GymAzing now has a full staff of educators to assist the space in fulfilling each of its roles, allowing parents and children to participate in classes and activities together. Five women now join Tina to help round out a full schedule of classes to meet what many needs parents usually face alone, providing them with the added community of other parents in which they can find camaraderie and support. Gym-Azing offers instruction in Zumba, Boxing, Kettlebell & Kidz Yoga, Greek Dance, Be Moved, and personal training, which can be viewed on their online schedule. Beyond weekly classes, Gym-Azing is the perfect all-in-one stop for party planning, covering literally every single aspect of an event, including: • Invitations • Theme Decorations • Balloons • All paper goods • Pizza for Kids • Separate Party Room • Only 1 party at a time • 3 Party Hosts • All dancing and activities • Juice for Kids • Bouncer • Face Painting • Bubble Machine • Exclusive Rights to Facility One of the best things about Gym-Mazing is its commitment to giving back to the community by engaging and utilizing the 52 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2014

community. Pizza is catered from right up the street, and most of the instructors work and live within the neighborhood. “Our customers aren’t just our clients”, explains Tina. “They become our friends.” Gym-Azing 27-14 23rd Ave Astoria, NY 11105 (347) 455-3661 www.gym-azing.com
