Dear Western Queens, Th is is the time of year to reflect and recognize all that we have to be thankful for. We can all probably admit that spend too much time thinking about what we want or what we don’t have. But as Thanksgiving and the holidays come up we can take the time to not only be grateful for what we have, but recognize that many other people need our help and are in much worse places. For one, I am very thankful for you our readers for picking up BORO every month, visiting our website and following us on social media. I’m appreciative of our advertisers that invest their hard-earned dollars with us to help them build their businesses. I can tell you that we will continue to listen to your feedback and get better with every day and every issue. Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Josh josh@boromag.com

COMES TO THE LIC FLEA
T
here’s always been okonomiyaki, scallion pancakes, and noodles with peanut dressing, but last weekend the Japanese booths at the LIC Flea jumped from just a couple to nearly fifteen. Demonstrating everything from the art of floral arranging to Japanese calligraphy, the additional vendors were brought in by Kazuko Nagao and Hideki Kato—the owners of Oconomi—the stand that has been sautéing delicious cabbage cakes mixed with ingredients like mozzarella, pork, and mixed veggies. What eventually became the Japanese Festival at the LIC Flea started off as Oconomi simply wandering if their friends visiting from Japan could be featured performers over the course of the weekend. When Josh Schneps scratched beneath the surface a little deeper, it turns out that there was a whole lot more to be discovered.

With about a month of planning, what began as a musical performance by the women of the
group, Salme, gradually developed to include a full lineup including the culinary chops of Koji Hagihara, the penmanship of Masako Inkyo, with performances by the Poku Poku Boys, Tenshi No Ai, and even the pop styling of ReniReni.
“We brought something completely different to the LIC Flea, and everybody stands to bemefit,” explains Kazuko Nagao. “And I really like that it’s new—we feel like we are
really a part of building up this Flea Market. It's such a great way to showcase our culture. Can you imagine once other cultural groups take part!?”

FOOD
i k do i k O When Okidoki Ramen opened its doors a few months ago, few people found the time to stop by and savor the ramen before the doors quickly shut again on a dark noodle house. Now several month’s later, the doors have reopened to the public, and this time we didn’t miss our chance to slurp up some of the action. And after four months of waiting, we certainly knew what we wanted to try. Okidoki serves several versions of ramen, including the original BBQ tonkotsu pork soup noodles, which arrive with bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, pork chashu, and a salt flavored egg and fish cake. Other popular variations include a similar soup with chicken and citron powder, or the shoyu ramen which employs soy and katsuobushi powder. In fact there are ten varieties of soup to choose from, including tsukemen and hiyashimen, for those who prefer dipping and dining. For diners seeking a really great deal, the addition of just three bucks earns diners a hearty side salad, as well as a choice if rice ball—ranging from kimchi all the way to spicy tuna or pickled plum. For those less concerned with specials, the fourteen small plates nearly double up on the action. Familiar versions of oshinko and fried oysters are simple and clean, but that doesn’t mean you have to play it safe. Branch out and try the shio tamago, a glistening egg sawed in half. Or perhaps the octopus marinated in wasabi. Everything is fresh, and made to order. 34-05 30th Ave | Astoria, NY 11103 718) 806-1677

FOOD
A LITTLE BIT OF
French in Astoria is oddly one of the most difficult cuisines to find, especially when it comes to table service. As a matter of fact, it could be argued that until last month, one solitary restaurant served a croque madame. Luckily the opening of Francis Café marks the second bistro in Astoria, presently open for lunch and dinner, and we took a chance to swing by. Francis Café is actually an outpost of Francis Staub—owner of Le Gamin in Williamsburg and Ft. Greene, as well as Staub cookware. So considering his famous association, we decided it would be well worth our time to see what he has cooking. There is nothing extraordinary about the menu itself, beyond several classic French dishes. Just simple sections with a few offerings under each. Crque Monsieur et Madame, Merguez Moutarde, and classic burger. Breakfast dishes include a few varieties of omelettes, quiche, even a pain perdu. The success at Francis Café lies in the quality (and quantity) of each dish—as each is superbly executed as if to create a postcard to French cuisine. Moules Frites are extremely tender. Crepes are exquisitely folded and tucked onto the plate as a culinary gift. Dry-aged steak frites is so juice it would fall apart in a sauce. On one occasion, I made the mistake of ordering a croque monsieur accompanied by a side dish sampler of haricot verts, au gratin potatoes, and a morel risotto. When the first of the plates arrived at the table, I gasped at the portion. But as I began to attempt to tackle even a fraction of each section of my meal, the food drew me in until suddenly there was hardly anything remaining. My will power faded, rendering me helpless. Be prepared, as the cuisine here is actually that excellent. Desserts arrive, and last seconds before the fork devours them. Coffee is as excellent as it should be in any French restaurant. When you arrive, take a moment and focus on the menu as though you were going to devour absolutely everything on it. And then 14 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013
simply order one entrée, followed by a dessert and a café au lait. Trust me, you will not regret it. And then return again and again and again, as if each visit were your very first. Everything is really that good. 3501 Ditmars Blvd | Astoria, NY 11105

FOOD
MAR’S If there is one thing that Astoria simply cannot get too much of, it is excellent seafood, fresh from the ocean. And we don’t mean little pieces of crabmeat, tiny shrimp with cocktail sauce, or fried clam strips. We mean buttery lumps of fresh steamed lobster slathered in a homemade hollandaise, pint glasses of jumbo prawns, oysters so smooth you have swallowed them before you know what’s happened to you, and mussels steamed with shallots and Pernod with a touch of cream adding a velvety finish fit for Neptune. We mean the kind of seafood they have been serving up at Mar’s for weekend brunch.
If you have been to Astoria’s hottest new seafood shack, then you know what we are talking about. The owners of Sparrow Tavern were met with such success, they decided to open a second location, showcasing their abilities as fishermen. Located around the corner from Kaufman Astoria studios, the place may seem just a bit off the beaten path. But sitting on the porch when the weather is nice, or indoors away from the crazy shuffle that can sometimes be Ditmars, Broadway, and 30th Avenue, the peace and quiet is well worth being a block off the beaten path. 22 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013
S In addition to seafood specials and a cold bar with usually at least ten different options, Mar’s is perhaps best known for their vintage cocktails. Where else can you wash down an oyster with an Aperol Spritz, Zesty Dog, or a traditional Michelada? The lobster benedict is absolutely one of the very best around, and the crushed fingerling potatoes are some of the tastiest spuds anywhere. And don’t forget the smoked pork belly with potato lionnaise or the truffled foie gras with a sunnyside up egg. These are the bites that send you back the following weekend for more.
And no matter what you do, there’s no way you should draw the line after you finish your entrée. After all, a little panna cotta or a honey and mint fritter never hurt anyone. 34-21 34th Ave Astoria, NY 11106 (718) 685-2480 lifeatmars.com Mon-Fri 5 pm - 3:30 am Sat-Sun 11 am - 3:30 am NOVEMBER 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 23

There is everything from fresh omelettes to pasta del giorno. “When I first came to Michael’s two month’s ago,” explains executive chef Chris Dolan, “about ten percent of the sales were specials. Now, I’d say it’s at least 90%.” The regular menu showcases everything from buffalo wings to club sandwiches, but the specials are several steps above. The trickiest part is serving superb versions of rather classic dishes. The menu targets classic plates with which most guests can relate, in terms of the variety of dishes. But when it comes to execution, that’s where Dolan shines.

FOOD (continued from page 24) You may have had seared ahi before, but his version is literally off the hook. And the best part, in optimal weather there are five entirely different seating areas. An indoor garden sits next to an indoor dining room, which unfolds onto the sidewalk dining area. Add into the mix an indoor ballroom with breathtaking views of Manhattan, alongside a rooftop lounge with a retractable roof—ideal for sweeping views of the city—and you’ve got yourself one of the nicest hotels in the area, without all of the excessive expense. If you have a friend or family stopping over, it is definitely worth swinging by. But don’t wait for an out of town guest to make this place your own. 27-05 39th Ave Four Points Sheraton Hotel Long Island City, NY 11101 Tel: 347-536-3633 http://michaelscafeny.com

Story HAYLEY BRIDGEWATER
There is no question that Astoria has a great deal to offer on the health and fitness front. Training centers, sports clubs, running groups, alternative healing therapies, studios for yoga and dance, boxing and martial arts gyms....It is like a toy store for someone like me, and I truly enjoy meeting everyone who is supporting the quest for better health in the area. No matter where my visits and research for BORO magazine may take me, I am often confronted with questions and discussions about nutrition, food sensitivities and interest in a clean, chemically free diet. As the business landscape of Astoria is constantly changing, I decided to take a tour of the established local health markets. Some are larger than others, many supply organic produce, prepared food and fresh juices, and a few are expanding into providing vitamin, herbal medicine, and nutritional supplements. I encourage you to stop in and experience what these local businesses have to offer.

Known for their reasonable prices and a free “treat” for spending $20, Sai Organics has something for everyone. Located just off of the 30th Ave NQ stop, the store contains a fresh juice bar, refrigerated section with pre-prepared sandwiches and salads, lots of organic produce, dry goods, beauty products, and nutritional supplements. If you are looking for variety in healthy soups, cereals, and snack items, they stock some wonderful options.

Fresh Start Organic Market & Eatery is a small, but unique shop located around the corner from the Ditmars NQ stop. Popular for their bulk bins and yummy sweets, this market also doubles as a 100% organic and mostly vegan eatery. Stop in for homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, juices and empanadas! During the warm months, enjoy a beverage in the beautiful Zen garden.

30-50 Steinway St, Astoria, NY 11103 718-274-0864
Huge and full of lush produce, Vitality and Health Natural Market is sure to be a favorite of the those looking for a ‘Whole Foods’ experience. They also have an attached cafe, hot bar, cold bar, pressed juices, dry goods, frozen items and health and beauty products. I even found my favorite vitamins and protein powder. For those that don’t live close by, the market is located across from the 46th street RM stop, and is open 24 hours.
Known for their made-to-order breakfasts, unique juice blends and smoothies, this market provides delivery service to neighborhood surrounding the Steinway/30th Ave corridor. While mostly a prepared foods shop, they do stock a small selection of organic groceries. Juice not your thing? They make bubble tea!

Formerly Y&Y Green Organic, and now more than double in size, Greenbay Market is a beautiful, organized shop bursting with organic options. Reasonably priced and centrally located on Broadway, Greenbay carries abundant produce, cold and frozen items, pre-made meals, dry goods, dairy, and allergen free foods. Unique amongst the local health markets, you will find a fresh sushi bar, olive bar, and a variety of Middle Eastern specialty items.
Located directly under the Ditmars NQ stop, Greenline is tiny, but is a great place for a rare find. One week, it might be an odd variety of fruit, the next, a new organic chocolate treat. The prices are pretty standard for the area, and while it is not a regular stop for me, I love to hunt for something new when I have the time. For a quick juice before jumping on the train, the fresh juice bar is immediately to your left in the front of the store.

Natural Frontier Market in Astoria is one of a five location health market chain  throughout NYC. Small, but packed to the gills, shoppers along Ditmars Blvd can find a variety of organic mainstays and allergen free foods in this friendly shop.  Visitors will notice a large section of environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products upon entering the store, as well as a multitude of homeopathic medical supplies. It is my go-to for cereals, bread, and 100% organic juices. Useful coupons and recipes can be found on the store website.

THE ARTS
AN INCREDIBLE LIFE IN PHOTOGRAPHY
Story ALAN CAPPER
“I want a great person. Somebody who gives something to humanity.” That’s how Tony Vaccaro chose his subjects for his photography in a career spanning over 70 years. He has used this criteria to capture the essence of some of the 20th century’s most iconic figures. They include Pablo Picasso (“I wanted to see if what his wife had written about him was true. It wasn’t”), Salvador Dali (“He kept me waiting for two hours, and I scolded him for it”), Jackson Pollock (“I teased him that he would be known as a paint dripper so he painted me a face”) and Frank Lloyd Wright (“He was simply one of the greatest men I knew.”) Visitors to Manducatis Rustica in Long Island City will be familiar with Vaccaro’s work. A large number of his celebrity photographs adorn the walls. Georgia O’Keefe, Lauren Bacall, Marcel Marceau, Max Ernst and a commanding portrait of Frank Lloyd Wright. These, however, are a mere tantalizing glimpse of over 1,000 portraits taken by Vaccaro in his career which began in the U.S. Army during World War II. His first major assignment was to photograph the impact of the Americans in Germany. These magnificent photographs formed the basis of a Taschen published book Entering Germany.
32 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013
After returning to the U.S. and dropping out of college –
“I felt like I knew everything,” he said – Vaccaro travelled around the country in a 1943 Chevrolet. One day he saw a copy of Business Week magazine with Fleur Cowles on the cover. He approached her for work and she hired him straight away. He started with Flair, and was quickly booked for photographic assignments by Life, Look and the other great publications of that period.
At the same time, and for the next three decades, he began to photograph an extraordinary array of celebrities, and of course, some of the most beautiful women too; Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, Liz Taylor, Maria Callas, Ali McGraw and the Europeans, Sophia Loren (“one of the greatest women I ever met”), Gina Lollabrigida (“she cooked for me”) Anna Magnani, and Anita Ekberg, the beautiful star of “La Dolce Vita.” “Marlene Dietrich tried to seduce me,” Vaccaro recalled. “It was in a hotel in Monte Carlo, and when I came into the room she was nearly naked, and threw herself into my arms. I had a young female assistant with me and this upset her. She told us both to get out because she was not going to get a simple one-onone seduction. I was 37 and she was 73. She had a habit of giving a watch to every man she had an affair with. I did not want that watch.” One of his most remembered assignments was to photograph Senator John Kennedy at home for Look magazine, just before his presidential run. “First

impressions mean a lot to me and my impression of him when we met was a man of great personal warmth and humanity,” said Vaccaro. “I also found, surprisingly, a strong expression of humility. We stayed friends until that terrible day in 1963.”
an exhibition in major cities of photographs from his book Entering Germany.
Vaccaro has been honored around the world, but especially in France and Germany. Germany put on
“For me it summed up liberation, and I want to have three memorials made from this image, two in Europe

and one in New York,” he said. Vaccaro sold his Manhattan penthouse and moved to Long Island City in 1972, because, to him, it represented something of the feel of the Left Bank in Paris. He still loves living in LIC. More recognition is on its way for Vaccaro, with two more books of his work being published, and a major exhibition being planned.

Sunnyside Gardens NYC’s First Garden City Story Meg Cotner
In the neighborhood of Sunnyside lies the leafy, quiet community of Sunnyside Gardens, one of America’s first garden cities. This early planned community of one-, two-, and threefamily brick houses with the later addition of a few apartment buildings has become one of the neighborhood jewels of Queens. This is a beautiful part of New York City, serving as a calm oasis in urban NYC while being just a short subway ride from bustling Midtown Manhattan. The neighborhood winds its way through 16 blocks situated roughly between 43rd and 52nd Streets to the west and east, and Queens Boulevard and Barnett Avenue to the south and north, in a sort of abstract T shape. It’s made up of a series of “courts” consisting of more than 600 buildings built around courtyards with accompanying pathways. Sunnyside Gardens Park, three acres in size, lies on the north edge of Sunnyside Gardens and is one of two members-only parks in all of NYC (Gramercy Park is the other). Sunnyside Gardens was constructed between 1924 and 1928 (townhomes), and 19311935 (apartments) by the New York City
36 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013
Housing Corporation (CHC), founded by developer Alexander Bing; the CHC was actually incorporated specifically to build a garden city, starting with Sunnyside Gardens. Clarence Stein and Henry Wright were the architects, and Marjorie Sewell Cautley was the landscape architect. The development is built on approximately 77 acres of land. The majority of it was originally owned by the LIRR—leftover land from the Sunnyside train yards project— and the rest was from private landowners, purchased for about 50 cents an acre. The development was built one “court” at a time, which was then sold off before the next section was built. The first court was Colonial Court, followed by Roosevelt, Hamilton, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Madison Courts. The community was created on the philosophical foundation that homeownership is “the basis of good citizenship.” The architects, aware of a housing crisis of the time and possessing a philanthropic streak, wanted to create something that would be within the economic grasp of those New Yorkers that perhaps didn’t consider themselves likely candidates for homeownership—low- and middle-income folks. (continued from page 36) embraced the ideas of “health, open space, greenery, and idyllic community living for all” as well, and all sorts of people were encouraged to buy a home here, including Jews, and Catholics, which was uncommon at the time. “Ownership” not “tenancy” was another driving concept in the process. It also helped that real estate taxes were not going to be a concern for these new homeowners—city officials in 1923-1924 voted to exempt this development from them. One of the defining elements of the garden city—a style of urban planning—is the presence of shared green space in proportion to the homes (and garages were built on the edges of the area). Throughout the townhomes of Sunnyside Gardens are tree-lined paths (some private, some accessible to the public, whether intended or not) and shared gardens and courtyards in the apartment buildings. The hope was that this would provide a sense of community among neighbors and respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Though in the mid-20th century the area was less in demand with lax upkeep, in the 1970s Sunnyside Gardens caught the eye of

preservationists and concerned residents, and in 1974 the community was designated as a Special Planned Community Preservation District. Then in 1984 it became a historical district in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, the neighborhood was officially landmarked by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. This decision caused both frustration and angst with some residents, who felt that landmarking would increase costs to maintain their homes as well as limit them from making certain repairs or adjustments, and elation with others who were more preservation-minded. Today, Sunnyside Gardens remains a highly desirable Queens neighborhood, attracting all sorts of people, including plenty of young families who arrived from more expensive areas of the city, looking for lower rents and housing costs, as well as more space for the same money they would have spent in the aforementioned boroughs. The area has been rather familyfriendly over the years—when Sunnyside Gardens was first built, it was a haven for diverse families. The neighborhood also has also become popular with young people looking for cheaper rents than they were able to find in Brooklyn and neighboring Astoria and
LIC. And historically, the area has attracted plenty of creative people—artists, writers, and teachers—and that remains the case to this day. It’s proximity to the 7 train is also a plus. The main commercial area of Sunnyside Gardens stretches along Skillman Avenue, and at times has the feeling of a small town Main Street. It’s lined with restaurants such as The Dog and Duck, a lively Irish pub; Quaint, a New American restaurant focusing on seasonal ingredients; Claret, a friendly wine bar that is popular with just about everyone; a greenmarket on the weekends, and a variety of global foods. Skillman is the site of the St. Pat’s For All Parade, an inclusive celebration that “celebrates the diversity of the Irish and Irish American communities of New York,” but participants run the gamut, including representatives from the LGBTQ community, local politicians, musicians, drum corps, and progressive political organizations. It is usually held in early March, just before St. Patrick’s Day, which is a popular holiday in Sunnyside as a whole, thanks to the established Irish community in the neighborhood. If you haven’t spent any time in Sunnyside Gardens, we highly recommended that you do!
