continuing to growas a magazine and as a community

ANNIVERSARY

WE’RE ONE YEAR OLD!

boro’s one year

Story Julian Lesser

As the initial inklings for what would ultimately become BORO Magazine first began to take shape in mid-2010, I remember being mildly nervous about external factors I deemed entirely out of my control. As do most entrepreneurs, I had stockpiles of dreams, plans and ambitions, yet none of these things could prepare me for what to expect as I eventually looked back from the other side of the tipping point. Now, having taken time to reflect on BORO’s first year, I’m both humbled and inspired at where we are today. As we went to print with this issue, exactly one year after our first, I can honestly say that I understand, and love, Western Queens more than ever before. Why? Running this magazine has introduced me to the neighborhood’s best and brightest people. It has allowed me to peer behind the curtain and bear witness to the inner mechanics that drive our budding neighborhood towards bigger and better things.

6 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2011

In some small way, I hope that we at BORO have become a part of this progress. After all, our success with the magazine is directly linked to and shared by the very same people who keep us in business. This includes our advertisers and our readers, who have demonstrated from our very first issue an enthusiastic desire to know more about the ins and outs of their community. Our bottom-line goal for BORO is to keep readers aware of all things Western Queens. And while I can certainly preach about all of the altruistic reasons that make me feel good about what we’ve created, I think it’s just as important to point out to any would-be entrepreneur the plausibility of addressing an unfilled niche with a business model. Starting a successful business doesn’t always involve smashing competitors and/or finagling money from desperate consumers. The relationship between BORO and Western Queens is entirely symbiotic. Any prosperity we may find with our magazine is entirely contingent upon the growth and sustainability of our neighborhood.

At the end of the day, before any issue of our magazine goes to bed, our greatest hope is to positively influence Western Queens by promoting local businesses, supporting vendors and, most of all, bringing much-deserved attention to our community’s many charities and green initiatives. If you happen to share this mission, the best way to show your support is by patronizing our advertisers. As you do your holiday shopping, buy local. As your families drop by for a winter visit, take them out to one of our community’s many world-class restaurants. In most cases, there is no reason to feed the Manhattan gestalt when there are plenty of perfect options right here in Queens. If this call-to-arms sounds even mildly self-serving, we at BORO don’t really see it that way. Our magazine is free. When we were looking for our initial revenue stream, it took the faith of a number of people to get things up and running. By supporting BORO, our advertisers have not only embraced the magazine but have also fortified our desire to bring the community closer together. And as BORO has continued to grow alongside our advertisers, the lines of communication between local businesses and readers have been substantially streamlined. Through BORO, Western Queens’ small business owners now have a wide-open channel to speak directly to their lifeblood, and vice versa. As we enter our second year, we want to go a few steps further. For example, while you’re out visiting local

businesses, you may find one of 20 permanent BORO Magazine stands designed and hand-built by Long Island City’s Jonathan Harris. You can also expect improvements in usability and interactivity with online content, which involves both layout changes and dynamic content. And, to put it frankly, we really want to get more people involved with BORO! We want to hear your stories, whether it’s a great piece of short fiction you’ve written or a tale of a crazy Saturday night out on Broadway. And never hesitate to reach out to us with your suggestions and ideas. Western Queens is growing, and in order to have any hope of keeping up, we need eyes and ears everywhere. If this past year has taught me any thing, it’s that projects like BORO can only thrive with the support of a tight-knit, cohesive neighborhood. If we’re going to continue to grow – as a magazine and as a community – we have to do it together. And we will. Thanks again to everyone who has supported BORO through our first 12 issues, and here’s to a great second year!

FOOD Story & Photos

Bradley Hawks

The holidays are full of jovial festivities with family and friends – many of which call for bringing a treat in tote. Not all of us may be as equipped as New York First Lady Sandra Lee when it comes to whipping up a glorious homemade dessert, but we do have some pretty spectacular goodies just around the corner in a borough boasting some of the city’s best bakeries.

8 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2011

Manducatis Rustica 46-3 Vernon Blvd, LIC | (718) 937-1932 | www.manducatisrustica.com “I could eat these all day long,” laughs “Mamma” Gianna Cerbone, owner of Manducatis Rustica. Dating back to an 18th century monastery in Salerno, Italy, sfogliatelle are one of the most difficult pastries to master. Pastry dough is first stretched out on a long table, lathered with butter and rolled. Sliced cross-sections are then formed into pockets and stuffed with sweetened ricotta and citrus zest. Served warm, the baked outer shell separates ever so slightly, creating layers of delightful golden crunch, which then yield to soft, warm pastry and a citrusy cream filling. *Mamma Gianna is offering a special for BORO readers during December. Just present this article to receive a box of 4 sfogliatelle and 4 cannoli (stuffed to order!) for $12.99 (usually $17).

Sugar Freak 36-18 30th Ave, Astoria

718-726-5850 www.sugarfreak.com

If you thought popcorn was just for trimming the tree or nibbling while watching A Christmas Story marathon on television, this treat will turn your world upside down. “I made my first version of this recipe when I was 6 years old,” reveals Chef Michele Addeo. “It actually came from Highlights magazine.” Her grown-up version, now available at Sugar Freak, features a thick pudding studded with popcorn for texture, which is then draped in a salted caramel sauce and capped with a snowfall of homemade cracker jack shavings.

Omonia 32-20 Broadway, Astoria | 718-274-6650 | www.omoniacafe.com Everyone has seen a chocolate fudge cake more than once or twice, but New Yorkers from all over have probably seen this particular cake more than they even realize. Sure, you might have enjoyed this quintessential dessert at Pax Wholesome Foods, Europa Café or any number of other delis throughout the city, but the original source of this decadent slice is right here in Queens at Omonia Café. That’s right, Omonia actually provides the sweets for many of the city’s busiest dessert cases, and this is one of their most popular selections. Devil’s food cake layered with actual fudge, crowned with glazed strawberries – what’s not to love?

Martha’s Country Bakery 3621 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria | (718) 545-9737 |www.marthascountrybakery.com This Berry Napoleon first appeared on the menu at one of Astoria’s most famous bakeries just three years ago. The creation of George Stertsios of Martha’s Country Bakery (the pie shop shares the name of his mother and newborn daughter), this mixed berry stack is a new twist on a classic. The exquisite and delicious dessert begins with a flaky puff pastry crust – hand-rolled daily – which is then layered with alternating tiers of angelically light vanilla pudding and fresh raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and blueberries, all dusted with confectioner’s sugar.

Terrizzi Pastry Shop 3514 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-726-9698

If you’ve ever been that guest who reaches into the bowl of shiny polished fruit only to hear snickering from your dinner host who loves to display wooden imposters, this is your chance to get even. Marzipan, traditional holiday treats from Italy, are shiny little fruits and vegetables that are anything but “for display only.” The meticulously hand-painted candy coating gives way to a soft and chewy almond-flavored center. Terrizzi Pastry Shop has been making these edible sculptures since 1964. And even though Mike Terrizzi took over the shop from his father, Frank, three years ago, “dad still paints every single piece you see in the display by hand.” DECEMBER 2011 | BOROMAG.COM | 9

FOOD

Sweet Leaf

10-93 Jackson Ave, LIC (917) 832-6726 | www.sweetleaflic.com

The only thing even remotely crumby about this cake is the wonderfully buttery streusel topping that puts the “crumb” in crumb cake. In fact, it might astound you that something this blitzed with juicy blueberries can stay together at all, as the ratio of berries to actual cake seems dramatically askew. It’s one of the most moist, delicious blueberry streusel coffee cakes to ever hit the neighborhood, and it’s born from the talents of Beverly Lauchner at Sweet Leaf. Just one bite of this exceptional pastry, and you just might forget you even ordered the coffee to accompany it.

Astor Bake Shop

12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria | 718-606-8439 www.astor-bakeshop.com

Though the typical New York residence doesn’t boast a fireplace large enough to burn a big tree, you can still enjoy the European yule log tradition in its edible form. The white mocha yule log at Astor Bake Shop is “our version of the traditional yule log, even down to the little meringue mushrooms,” says Chef George McKirdy. His elegant take is a coffee sponge cake layered with a milk chocolate cremeaux that has been rolled into a log, which is then blanketed with white vanilla butter cream, a white chocolate glaze and a traditional meringue mushroom garnish. One 8-inch log serves 6-8 guests, and is also available in other flavors, including praline and chocolate.

If you stop by Malu bakery in Long Island City for these chocolate-covered Fritos, make sure you buy a small bag for the trip home. Otherwise, it’s unlikely the confection will last the journey to its intended guests. A genius marriage of sweet and savory, these beloved little salty corn scoops are dipped in milk chocolate and served alongside several other homemade candies and ice cream at this gourmet mom-and-pop sweets shop.

Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company 36-14 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-777-1121 www.facebook.com/BrooklynBagelandCoffeeCompany

Whether it’s providing some holiday cheer for co-workers, or simply jazzing up a winter breakfast at home, the spreads at Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company are second to none. Using fresh, preservative-free cream cheese as a base, the creative team meets weekly to discuss and test new flavors. Popular holiday spreads include pumpkin and apple cinnamon. The bagels are made with unbleached, unbromated flour and then hand-rolled and water-boiled for that extra snap – it’s a treat unto itself!

HOLIDAY gift guide

Story Daniel Crown

//

photos philippe trinh

If the month of December has one thing to teach us, it’s that there’s an undeniable art to shopping on a budget. The ability to find the perfect gift – something inspired and superior, yet affordable and appropriate – is an invaluable skill that’s undoubtedly at its highest demand during this, the holiday season. Lucky for you, Western Queens’ diverse band of retailers offers a number of high-quality, bargain-priced items that are sure to please. So forget Manhattan! Support your community. Everything you need is right here in the neighborhood.

S

ince opening in April 2007, SITE NYC and their “cleverly curated gifts” have received loving write-ups from some of the city’s most influential retail critics, including, but not limited to, The New York Times, New York Magazine and Time Out New York. Focusing on handmade vintage and locally produced gifts, owner Mackenzi Faquer describes her inventory as “nicer things that you would actually want to be able to give as a gift.” The shop also provides full interior design services, along with a diverse catalog of home decor and kids’ items. 32-90 36th Street, Astoria 718-626-6030 | www.SITEnyc.com

Hand Painted Bike Bells $20 Hand painted by artist Annie Legrouix, these weather-resistant bells can give even a well-worn bike a much-needed makeover. The bells come in three forms: Speedometer, Doughnut and “This Bike is My Car.” It’s the perfect gift for your favorite tree-hugging biker!

Graffiti Cocktail Shaker $21.95

Designed to look exactly like a can of spray-paint, this cocktail shaker combines the rebellious conviction of street art with the comparatively shrewd craft of modern mixology. A great gift for anyone who sees mixing drinks as a true form of artistic expression (or someone who just needs something to replace the boring silver shaker resting on top of the liquor cabinet).

O

ne of Astoria’s most highly touted retail destinations, Andrew Purdom’s Inside Astoria has evolved in recent years from a home decor hub into a one-stop destination for a wide array of gifts. Products include everything from t-shirts to party games, children’s toys to cookbooks and furniture to sushi serving sets. With such an expansive variety of gifts and trinkets, Inside Astoria has something for just about anyone on your gift-giving ledger. 28-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria | 718-956-4000

Leather Wrapped & Stainless Steel Flasks ($20-$30)

For anyone in need of a clandestine swig of bourbon every now and then, look no further than these masculine leather and steel flasks. The canteens range from 3-7 ounces – big enough to do the job, but small enough to tuck away in the inside pocket of your favorite jacket.

Hot Hugs $29.95 (each)

For that wide-eyed child in your life, the Hot Hugs stuffed animal line consists of a wide selection of animals, both exotic and barnyard, replete with removable belly pouches that can be heated in the microwave. As if the heat itself weren’t soothing enough, each pouch is stuffed with lavender, a well-known relaxing agent. DECEMBER 2011 | BOROMAG.COM | 27

n terms of inventory diversity and trend-defying modesty, Astoria Wine and Spirits is one of the neighborhood’s preeminent hotspots for intrepid spirit-lovers. A fixture on Broadway for the last two and a half years, owner Yang Gao believes his store counterbalances other wine stores that focus predominately on large-scale, corporate wineries. We focus on smaller producers, organic sustainable wineries that produce the sorts of wines that people can’t find in other places,” says Gao. “We try to appeal to people who want to try different wines and be a little adventurous.” 3412 Broadway, Astoria | 718-545-9463 | www.astoriawines.com

Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon $18.99

A red wine, the Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from some of California’s best-known wine regions, including Napa Valley. In 2005, Food and Wine Magazine ranked the wine amongst its “Best Finds Under $20.” Nearly seven years later, the Cabernet Sauvignon hasn’t lost its magic. A good choice for a wine-loving parent.

Cremant De Bourgogne $18.99

A tasty alternative to champagne, Charles Ranville’s Cremant de Bourgogne is a chardonnay-based sparkling produced in the Burgundy region of France. The natural terroir of the Ranville winery produces a surprising fruit taste that has been known to compare favorably to various Champagne region sparklings during blind taste tests. Perfect for a loved one or significant other.

Louis Sipp Pinot Gris $23.99

Considering its similarities to the wildly popular Pinot Grigio, Louis Sipp’s Pinot Gris provides a nice twist on an exuberantly trendy wine. Most reviewers like to note the unique smokiness that accompanies the Gris’ tropical fruit notes, a byproduct of the Ribeauville terroir. A perfect way to subtly wean your roommate from the Yellow Tail he or she keeps bringing home from Walmart. 30 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2011

Redemption Rye $28.99

According to government standards, in order to qualify as a true rye, a batch of whiskey requires a mash of at least 51% rye grain. By that standard, the distillers at Redemption Rye are downright whiskey purists. Their small batch rye whiskeys use a 95% mash and are aged in charred wood barrels for over two years. The resulting taste is equal parts spicy and smoky, a transcendent flavor that’s just as likely to appeal to bourbon drinkers as rye traditionalists.

Foster, one of four local business leaders organizing the event, says she hopes to bring the community together for a good cause. Other participating businesses include: Belief; Creators’ Co-Op; Fresh Start; The Jumping Bulldog; Peter Valcarcel Home; and Rejuvenate Face & Body. The initiative is also supported by NYC Council Member Peter Vallone Jr. of District 22. During Shop-A-Holiday, shoppers will be able to pick up a “retail passport” at any of the aforementioned locations; each store will have a specially designed wreath, donated by Teddy’s Florist, on its door. And by making KrisTEES

the last stop on your trip with stamps from all 7 stores, you’ll receive a gift bag full of goodies, including a specially created holiday ornament, exclusive promotions and a oneof-a-kind cookie by Dough & Batter. Be also on the lookout for one-days specials on merchandise; ten percent of all sales that day will be donated to SHAREing & CAREing. Volunteers will be at the shops throughout the day to discuss the charity and specific services it offers, which include outreach, support, counseling and help finding health providers. “It’s a very special charity surrounded with very little manpower,” says Peter Valcarcel. “We wanted to do something where businesses could work together to make a difference.” And just in case you want to help but can’t make the event, each participating store will have a donation box for the remainder of the month.

DRINKS

Afton Mulled Cider

Pearl of Pears

Originally a family recipe, the Afton Mulled Cider is the creation of Mike Krawiec co-owner of Sweet Afton. It’s inspired by the apple orchards of New Paltz, NY, where Krawiec was born and raised.

This winter cocktail brings out flavors of pear influenced by floral and herbal notes and is accompanied by the elegance of sparkling wine – a sure bet for happy holiday times!

CHARITY Princess, 3 YR OLD Pit Bull mix (ASPCA)

Hazel, 1 YR OLD Domestic Shorthair mix (ASPCA)

N

othing’s cuter than a doggy with a big red bow on his head, sitting underneath a sparkling Christmas tree. And this year, you don’t need look far to make this holiday story a reality. A number of local NYC organizations are dedicated to saving the lives of animals with the hope of matching them to a loving family, including: The American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Heavenly Angels Animal Rescue and Bobbi & The Strays. Working together, these groups often save animals from high-kill shelters. “We are in a crisis,” explains Gail Buchwald, Vice President of Overseeing Adoption of ASPCA NYC. “There are about 50,000-60,000 homeless animals combined in all five boroughs.” Organizations like the ASPCA partner with the NYC Animal Care and Control Facility (AC&C) – where most of these animals end up – to help alleviate shelter overcrowding. Last year alone, the ASPCA transferred over 1,500 animals from AC&C to its adoption facility and re-homed 300 animals. But for the nearly 200 rescue groups and shelters in NYC, there is still much work to be done. Due to an uncertain economy and tough pet-ownership regulations imposed by landlords, adoptions city-wide are down 10-15%. And a new 38 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2011

trend – online pet stores, which often utilize puppy mills – has also proven detrimental to animal rescue. “Puppy mills are all about making profit – there’s Ludlow, 2 YR OLD Coonhound mix (ASPCA) no concern for the health or nutrition of the animals,” said Buchwald. “They are often malnourished, stacked in wire crates with no medical care, enrichment or socialization. [In contrast,] we provide a lifestyle-animal matching program, starter kits and microchips for all our adoptions, and we will always take an animal back.” For those considering adoption, it’s important to think long-term – after all, pets can live up to 20 years, and owners should be prepared for the responsibility of providing a healthy, lifelong home. But once you’ve decided to own a pet, consider, as Buchwald says, making pet adoption “the first option, because it’s truly the gift that keeps on giving.”
