FOOD

Baby spinach with cranberries & goat cheese at Basil Brick Oven

Not Easy Being Green When Eating Healthy Requires More Than Just Luck Story + Photos Bradley Hawks

A

s winter gradually thaws into spring, so dwindles the communal appetite for those rich comfort foods that pack on ‘extra insulation’ during the frosty months. With beach weather rapidly approaching, ‘tis the season for detoxification and adhering to a stricter diet. What if the Master Cleanse and fasting aren’t particularly your cup of laxative tea?

Although St. Patty’s Day is just around the corner, healthy eating demands a lot more than mere luck. Instead of green beer and party platters, this month we explore local restaurants serving up some substantial verdigris. After all, the federal diet recommendation is at least three cups of leafy greens per week. Thanks to the culinary creativity of our local chefs, eating green is no longer punishment—and it tastes exponentially better than it ever did in the school cafeteria! 6 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

Linn Restaurant

Wakame salad at Linn Restaurant

29-13 Broadway, Astoria 718-204-0060

Wakame, a naturally sweet edible seaweed, is often consumed by nursing mothers for its rich supply of calcium and iodine. Recent studies in Japan reveal the presence of compounds that speed the burning of fatty tissue. At Linn Japanese Restaurant, the wakame salad is also tossed with red and blue seaweed and drizzled with a subtly tangy miso vinaigrette, resulting in one of the most delicious versions around. Consider ordering it with a mug of green tea, which is believed to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cancer. Seafood Wonton Noodle Soup at Honoo

Hemp Fettuccine at Ornella Trattoria

Ornella Trattoria Italiana 29-17 23 Ave, Astoria | 718-777-9477 www.ornellatrattoria.com

You say pasta is your weakness? Why not try a relatively guilt-free and nearly gluten-free version? Made with hemp flour (chef Giuseppe Viterale also blends a small amount of wheat flour), the pasta is sautéed in a little olive oil with garlic cloves and sundried tomatoes, which bring out the natural nuttiness of the hemp. A substantial source of protein, hemp contains all 21 known amino acids in quantities significant enough to meet the body’s needs. The hemp fettuccine can also be served in pistachio cream sauce—the little green nuts are popular for increasing antioxidant levels and preventing hypertension.

Honoo Grill & Noodle

33-06 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria | 718-606-0653 www.honoo33.com

Bok Choy, also known as Chinese broccoli, is commonly found chopped, diced, wilted, and fried as an accent on most Asian take-out menus. At Honoo Grill, however, this popular source of crude fiber is featured in its emerald entirety, swimming in rich seafood broth amongst homemade shrimp-calamari wontons. These ribbons of Vitamin A & C are prominent in several of the noodle soups.

FOOD

Baby String Beans at Il Bambino

Swiss chard quesadilla at The Sparrow Tavern

The Sparrow Tavern

Il Bambino

24-01 29th St, Astoria | 718-606-2260 www.thesparrowtavern.com

34-08 31st Ave, Astoria | 718-626-0087 www.ilbambinonyc.com

One of the most nutritious of all leafy greens is the distinctly bitter and crunchy Swiss chard. High in Vitamins A, K, and C, along with iron and several other minerals, chard is also rich in dietary fiber and protein. At The Sparrow Tavern these luscious leaves are sandwiched between crisped corn tortillas with leeks, dill, and a subtle dusting of manouri and fontina cheeses, creating a velvety, crunchy, creamy, and all-around delicious vehicle for consuming one of nature’s richest greens.

While the words ‘green beans’ may evoke hesitant grimaces from children across the country, Il Bambino transforms these haricot verts into a crunchy, fresh, delicious tapas. Baby string beans are lightly tossed in a tangy, earthy truffle vinaigrette, served in a bouquet over toasted croutons, and then blanketed with a snowfall of shaved parmesan. Not a bad way to take in iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which aid the body in metabolism.

Jumbo sea scallops and asparagus wrapped in prosciutto at Ovelia

Ovelia

34-01 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-721-7217 www.ovelia-ny.com

Another antioxidant-rich source of fiber and Vitamin C is asparagus, which traces all the way back to ancient Egypt. Asparagus is believed to aid in hypertension and promote a healthy complexion. While these supple spears are delicious all on their own, Ovelia beautifully uses them to provide contrast in both texture and taste when wrapped in savory bundles with prosciutto and grilled sea scallops. 8 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

Basil Brick Oven added 20 pies with new green sauces and toppings like brussels sprouts

Basil Brick Oven Pizzeria 28-17 Astoria Boulevard, Astoria | 718-204-1205 www.basilbrickoven.com

With twenty new additional pies on the menu (bringing the overall tally to sixty), Basil Brick Oven offers three green sauce options, including basil pesto, asparagus puree, or artichoke sauce. New green toppings include Brussels sprouts, which boost DNA repair and harbor compounds believed to fight cancer. A baby spinach salad with dried cranberries, goat cheese, and homemade orange vinaigrette has enough vitamins and iron for Popeye.

FOOD

Sarma (stuffed cabbage) at Ukus

Ukus

Kanom Jean Gang Kow Noodles at Leng Thai

42-08 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-267-8587

Ukus is one of Astoria’s best-kept secrets, known primarily for their homemade Balkan sausages and steaming pastry pies (the spinach pie makes any spanakopita look wimpy in comparison). Also worth considering is the braised stuffed cabbage—rich in beta-carotene, Vitamin C, and fiber—filled with tender spiced ground beef and rice. Or perhaps the stuffed green pepper? Begova corba, a traditional hangover soup, is chock-full of okra in a lemony herbed chicken broth with a dollop of sour cream. Rich in Vitamin C and dietary fiber, okra is commonly regarded for its diuretic properties. Zucchini stuffed with sweet and savory minced coconut chicken at Leng Thai

Leng Thai

33-09 Broadway, Astoria | 718-956-7117 www.lengthainewyork.com

10 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

If a little spice can go a long way in stimulating metabolism and sustaining heat to burn calories, then prepare for a turbo boost with the green curry at Leng Thai! The Kanom Jean Gang Kow Noodles are blanketed in a fiery green curry with eggplant, bell pepper, chicken, and Thai basil, all sweetened with coconut milk. On the milder end of the spectrum, the Zucchini Yad Sai arrives with two boats of halved zucchini, piled with a tomato-coconut bolognese of savory minced chicken. The green squash is low in calories, but rich in folates and other vitamins useful in cell repair and growth.

N

o matter where your own origins may lie, the festivity and celebration accompanying St. Patrick’s Day in New York makes it hard not to feel a sense of pride in the strong Irish community. With NYC boasting the largest number of Irish Americans of any U.S. city, the holiday means a lot more than a rowdy party here. As Queens dwellers, we are fortunate to be in one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the world. A wealth of nationalities have made their mark on the borough, and the Irish are no exception. For those in search of a quality Irish pub in our neighborhood, options abound. Here are some of the top spots where the Big Apple and the Emerald Isle meet.

The Quays

45-02 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-204-8435

Five blocks east of Steinway, The Quays is well past the stretch of 30th Avenue known for being hip and bustling. What you will find instead is an unpretentious bar populated with friendly neighborhood denizens, great pints of Guinness, and good-natured competition at the dartboard. Rather than offering a conventional happy hour, bartenders at The Quays offer a great buy back deal: every third drink is on the house!

20 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

Doyle’s Corner

42-02 Broadway, Astoria | 718-606-2777

If you are perusing this list hoping to find a laidback spot to shoot pool, consider Doyle’s your go-to. Though they don’t have a kitchen, you’re more than welcome to bring your own food or order delivery to complement the beer. Doyle’s Corner also has karaoke nights, great for entertainment value and the imbibed performer in all of us.

Shannon Pot

45-06 Davis St, LIC | 718-786-6992

Shannon Pot’s unassuming facade on bustling Jackson Avenue speaks to the old-school New York neighborhood vibe inside the bar. With the 7 train rattling by overhead, graffiti mecca 5Pointz and art gallery Space Womb next door, and contemporary art institution MoMA PS1 across the street, Shannon Pot is nestled in the heart of quintessential LIC. The diversity of patrons in the bar at any given time is an undeniable element of its charm. Shannon Pot also offers a full food menu—the huge burger, loaded with mushrooms, bacon, and onion, has become something of a local legend.

Daly’s Pub

31-86 31st St, Astoria | 718-606-2561

The interior of Daly’s, with its dim lighting and dark wood, syncs up well with most people’s mental image of a timeless Irish pub. A modern jukebox and televisions throughout the bar keep the atmosphere lively—the weekday happy hour doesn’t hurt either. Though you can’t go wrong with any of the draught beers or cocktails here, the Bloody Mary is a house favorite.

Make Your Own

St. Paddy’s Cocktails Story Matthew Taylor

For some, the thought of going out and facing the teeming, raucous crowds on St. Patrick’s Day is far from appealing; in fact, it might even be enough to make you turn green! If you’d rather avoid the overcrowded bars and stumbling strangers this year, why not host your own St. Paddy’s party at home? BORO talked to bartenders at some of Astoria’s premier cocktail destinations and got recipes for Irish-themed drinks that will be sure to impress your guests!

“The Nutty Irishman” Shot from Dean Tomic of Winegasm

Why To Stop By: New chef Corey Cash’s Mediterranean training complements Winegasm’s longtime focus. The truffle fries and chimichurri steak crostini are two of the menu’s must-tries. Stop by on Wednesdays to get 20% off on local New York wines. What You’ll Need: Irish Cream (Such as Molly’s or Bailey’s) Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur Jameson Irish Whiskey Shot Glasses Bar Spoon (For Layering)

Winegasm | 31-86 37th St, Astoria 718-932-3331 | www.winegasmeatery.com

22 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

The whole idea of this shot is the layering. Pour 1 part Irish Cream, the heaviest of the ingredients, into the bottom of the shot glass. Using the bar spoon, layer 1 part Frangelico on top of the Irish Cream, and top the shot off with 1 part Jameson. If you’re feeling especially festive, you can garnish with a four-leaf clover for good luck! The layering can be difficult, so if you want to maintain the flavor of the shot but are less concerned with its visual aesthetic, you can chill a mixture containing equal parts of the three ingredients to pour shots at your party.

Jameson & Mulled Cranberry Cider from John Elezovic of Hell Gate Social

Why To Stop By: Hell Gate is a local favorite for its music, great drinks, and off-the-wall fun events. Be sure to check out their monthly Saturday Burlesque Show—it falls on March 16 this time around! What You’ll Need: Cranberry Juice 2 Cups Fresh Cranberries 1-2 Sliced Apples

John Elezovic, Hell Gate’s manager, recommends this drink for cold winter days. If February was any indication, there’s a good chance St. Paddy’s will be frigid!

3 Tsp. Nutmeg 3 Tsp. Cinnamon 1 Tsp. Whole Cloves Jameson Irish Whiskey

Hell Gate Social 12-21 Astoria Blvd, Astoria | 718-204-8313

Put all of the ingredients except the Jameson in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Keep on low heat until the fruit is poached. Pour the cider into mugs, add Jameson to taste, and enjoy!

Irish Thyme from Mike Di Tota of Sweet Afton

Why To Stop By: Sweet Afton’s weekend brunch (Saturdays & Sundays 11 AM-4:30 PM) features delectable items such as the breakfast burger, blueberry pancakes, and fried pickles. Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and delicious, expertly crafted specialty cocktails from bartender Mike Di Tota are a steal at their $7 brunch price. Be sure to stop by for the weekday happy hour from 4-7 PM as well. What You’ll Need: Powers Whiskey

Angostura Bitters

Applejack

Apple Cider

Brown Sugar

Cocktail Shaker & Strainer

Thyme Lemon Juice

Sweet Afton | 30-09 34th St, Astoria 718-777-2570 | www.sweetaftonbar.com

Begin by making thyme simple syrup. Stir 1 cup brown sugar into 1 cup water and let the sugar dissipate as you bring the water to a boil. Bring off heat, add thyme liberally, and let the mixture steep for about an hour. This simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator for up to a month. In a cocktail shaker, combine ice, 1 ounce Powers Whiskey, 1 ounce Applejack, ¾ ounce thyme simple syrup, ½ ounce lemon juice, 1 ounce apple cider, and a dash of Angostura bitters. Shake and strain into a glass—Di Tota recommends a champagne coupe. MARCH 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 23

Saving Daylight Replacing The 1 Missing Hour Story Bradley Hawks

F

ew will flinch in their sleep on March 10 when 2 AM magically becomes 3 AM and that extra hour we were gifted last fall is mysteriously rescinded by Mother Nature. Other than a seemingly premature last call on Saturday night at the bars, or the need to adjust microwave, stovetop, and all non-cable or cellular clocks, most New Yorkers take the change with a grain of salt (save for that absent-minded theater-goer who arrives at 3 for a 2 o’clock matinee, just in time for intermission). In honor of that peculiar biannual shift on the time spectrum, consider this roundup of meaningful ways to make an hour really count.

1 Exit the subway a stop before or after your home station and explore on the extended walk home. A simple stroll along any of the main avenues can reveal some real hidden gems. 2 Stroll 30th Ave and Broadway— there’s a whole world waiting to be discovered just around the corner. Check out over a hundred dried pastas or the homemade mozzarella at Dave & Tony Salumeria (35-18 30th Ave). Peruse smoked meats and slabs of house bacon, deliberate over the colorful olive counter, survey specialty beers from around the world, or explore the imported British candies and treats at Euro Market (30-42 31st St). Try a drinkable fruit jelly, grab a bento box for tomorrow’s lunch, and browse Japanese DVDs or a myriad of dumplings at Family Market, a Japanese home specialty store (29-15 Broadway).

The Museum of the Moving Image has over 130,000 film-related artifacts.

Shop for fresh and imported cheeses, pastas, and cured meats at Dave & Tony Salumeria

3 Everyone loves a great makeover story. Whether it’s subtle or a full renovation, the ladies at Primp & Tease have emerged as one of the most innovative, current, and friendly salons in the neighborhood. Professional stylists in a cozy atmosphere with renowned products like Bumble & Bumble work together to cultivate a stellar salon experience for both women and men. 4 Take a walk across the Queensboro Bridge (now officially the Ed Koch Bridge) using the pedestrian walkway on the north side of the lower level, beginning near Crescent Street. Connecting Long Island City with Manhattan, this cantilever bridge built in 1909 offers breathtaking views of the skyline, the East River, and Roosevelt Island below. If you have more than an hour, hop on the sky tram to Roosevelt Island from its station at 59th Street and 2nd Ave for the price of a subway ride (and yes, they accept Metro Cards). 5 Read one of those flyers and table tents at your favorite bar and actually check out one of the themed evenings. Rest-Au-Rant, for example, hosts comedy nights on Tuesdays at 9 PM featuring comics from Comedy Central and NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Or jam to live music on Thursdays at 9PM—upcoming artists showcase everything from American Roots Music to Japanese Gypsy Rock. 30 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2013

6 Take an informal tour of the East River for just four bucks ($1 extra if you take along your bicycle). The East River Ferry takes off from the former Harry’s Water Taxi Beach in Hunters Point (visit www.nywaterway.com for routes and schedules) and stops at Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Governors Island (only during summer weekends), and 34th St in Midtown. $4 lets you on and off one time between any two stations, or $12 buys a full-day hop on-hop off pass. Bring along your camera for great pictures of Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the vibrant waterway and bridges along the way. The entire roundtrip journey takes almost exactly one hour. There is even a free ferry shuttle bus that connects at the 34th St terminal, crossing over to 6th Avenue and circling Midtown. 7 The Museum of the Moving Image is free on Fridays from 4 to 8 PM, so there’s no excuse not to stop by Astoria’s outstanding tribute to film, television, and digital media— with over 130,000 artifacts relating to the art, history, and technology of the moving image.
