Dear Western Queens, October is a month of acceptance. Accept the truth summer is officially over!

JULIAN LESSER editor-in-chief

The bitter NYC winter is right around the corner. But don’t shed a tear. Take advantage of the short lived yet beautiful season of Autumn (which usually lasts about 3 days). Hunker down with some warm soul food and return to red wines and spiked cider! Find an awesome costume for Halloween, watch some football and see some art.

SEASONAL

SAVORINGS

Just like New Yorkers are beginning to pack away their sandals, shorts and swimsuits in exchange for denim, wool and a warmer wardrobe, the city’s eateries are also trading their summer fare for autumn menus filled with more comforting cuisine. Read on for a rundown of some of the seasonal stars now being showcased on the menus of four of the neighborhood’s favorite restaurants:

El Ay Si

The menu at El Ay Si has been described as “eclectic” and “global,” which is another way of saying it’s universally comforting and tasty (and not to mention generously portioned and reasonably priced!). Happy Hour extends Wednesday through Sunday from 4–7 p.m. with $5 well drinks, $4 pints, $6 wines and $8 specialty cocktails, along with Bingo on Sundays.

Chicken Fried Chicken

This seemingly redundant name is a traditional moniker for country fried chicken and refers to the manner in which it is prepared. At El Ay Si, juicy chicken coated in crispy batter arrives on a pillow of smashed potatoes, along with peppered white gravy and a side of buttery green beans.

Nachos

There’s a reason why this monster appears under “Mains” rather than “Small Bites.” Homemade tortilla chips remain miraculously crunchy, even when partnered with any of the 8 toppings. Better yet, try “the works” (pictured), which comes covered with everything from skirt steak and grilled chicken to chili and avocado.

Cavo

Whether sharing small plates – like the veal meatballs stuffed with sheep’s milk cheese – in the outdoor sunken garden, or settling down for an intimate meal in one of Astoria’s most glamorous dining rooms, it doesn’t take long to see that the artwork on the plate is just as spectacular as your surroundings. Fall specials include a free bottle of wine with the purchase of two entrees on Mondays, 1/2 price entrees on Tuesdays, 50% off the manager’s wine list on Wednesdays, Ladies’ Night Specials on Thursdays and $20 sangria pitchers each Sunday.

Ravioli

Striped pasta pockets are stuffed with four Greek cheeses, then served in a creamy feta sauce with a drizzle of truffle oil. One of the area’s most unique ravioli dishes, it is an absolute must for any pasta lover.

Black angus short ribs

Black angus short ribs are slowly braised for four hours for fall-apart-at-the-touch tenderness, showcased atop creamy polenta and then draped with an exquisite red wine reduction with fall vegetables and a kiss of microgreens. This masterpiece pairs beautifully with a bottle of Amethystos, a fullbodied charismatic “wine of drama” from the vineyards of Greece.

Rèst-âü-Ránt

Just a block away from the 36th Ave N/Q line, Rèst-âü-Ránt is a hidden gem. Featuring an extensive selection of wine, beer and cocktails, this cozy corner kitchen is the ideal gathering spot. Local comedians grab the spotlight Tuesdays at 10 p.m., while music takes center stage Thursdays at 9 p.m. A diverse menu features everything from dumplings to fondue, and the fall specials are inspired by the grape harvest season.

Goat Cheese & Grape Focaccia

A flatbread of homemade focaccia is spread with fresh goat cheese, halved red grapes, and sprigs of rosemary – all toasted in the oven.

Organic North Shore Long Island Sliders

A trio of beef sliders are basted in a shallot-merlot reduction, topped with velvety melted gorgonzola, tomato and a frisee salad, and then sandwiched on Turkish somun bread from local Pain D’Avignon Bakery. OCTOBER 2011 | BOROMAG.COM | 5

FOOD

Ornella Trattoria italiana

Few menus in the neighborhood evolve as frequently as Ornella Trattoria’s, where chef-owner Giuseppe Viterale daily scours local markets for inspiration to help reinvent his favorite regional Italian dishes. While the weekly specials remain the same ($14.95 Steak Night on Mondays, 1.5lb lobster over seafood pasta for $21 on Tuesdays and select pastas for $10 on Thursdays), two exceptional new brunch items are on tap for the fall:

FRIED CHEESE SANDWICH The Roman Fried Cheese Sandwich could overtake any competitor’s grilled cheese in a cage fight. Homemade foccacia is first generously stuffed with fresh mozzarella, then fried and blanketed with a creamy reduction of brandy, anchovies, shallots and capers.

HANGOVER PASTA

MAP IT:

Hangover Pasta shatters any notions you’ve had that noodles can’t satiate a brunch craving. Homemade pappardelle is boiled in milk, adding a sweetness to the broad pasta ribbons, which are then tossed with savory bits of bacon, a drizzle of truffle oil and topped with a fried egg – sort of like a carbonara gone crazy. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

OH D

D Does the

Eat?

Story

When the Department of Health (DOH) launched its controversial letter grading system for New York City restaurants last August, they had to have known they’d ruffle a few feathers. Indeed, the transition from the old “pass/fail” standard to a more transparent alternative has caused some local restaurant owners to go visibly grey over the last twelve months, eliciting reactions that have ranged from mild indifference to full-on rage. A year later, Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company’s Panos Voyiatzis doesn’t get the fuss. He says that an owner’s opinion on the system usually boils down to the score they’re given. In his case, all four of his restaurants have maintained A’s. “Is the system perfect?” he said. “No. But what system is?” According to Manducatis Rustica’s Gianna Cerbone, the main problem with the system is that it fails to deliver specific information. “The system does not always reflect reality,” she said. In Astoria alone, eighteen different restaurants made the A grade cut by one point. Thirty-three additional A restaurants were within two points of getting a B. As for the less fortunate, 14 B restaurants were within one to three points of an A. To put it simply, the stickers in the windows don’t always tell the whole story. While the DOH has set up a mostly proficient webpage where consumers can research a restaurant’s history, owners like Cerbone believe that most look no further than the letter – which in itself can be enough to 8 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2011

negatively affect a business. As an example, Cerbone shares the tale of a young couple she saw staring at the “Grade Pending” sign posted inside a restaurant’s window. Being a restaurant owner herself, she took interest in what they had to say. “I sat there and I listened to them,” Cerbone said. “The young girl said, ‘They don’t even have a real grade in there. I won’t even eat in a place that has a B.’ They argued back and forth, and they finally decided not to go in.” Stories like this one haunt the dreams of small business owners. When looking at the bigger picture, however, food lovers like Voyiatzis also understand the dangers of prior leniencies. While he believes the system in place can cause occasional headaches, he also points out that there is a huge difference between an “A” grade and a “C” grade. Some of the borderline evaluations may be murky –and at times unfair – but he takes solace in the fact that consumers are safe from restaurants that “don’t care about health at all.” “With however many thousands of restaurants in this city, there’s the potential for a lot of people to get sick,” Voyiatzis said. “I really can’t imagine NYC without a DOH. You can hate them or you can love them, but I think all restaurant owners should agree that we need them.”

This year’s Electric Boogaloo theme – complete with live hip-hop and spoken word by the youth of Urban Art Beat NYC and breakdancing from RadioHead Entertainment – will definitely inspire. And that’s not all: LIC’s Breadbox Café will sell local harvest foods, and your four-legged friends can participate in the Canine Costume Contest at 1 p.m. 18 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2011

The tour will include historical criminal and pirate stories, ship disasters, local cemeteries and mysterious Native American rituals. FALL NIGHTLIFE

NIGHTLIFE

Story & Photos Bradley Hawks

As the trees shed their verdigris summer wardrobe and the summer breeze loses its steam giving way to frost, New Yorkers retreat indoors for winter games of billiards, pints, and football.

Each of the 14 billiards tables are free during happy hour with the purchase of food and drink.

With 7,000 square feet, Break has space for groups of any size to grab a seat and enjoy a bite from the menu, or one of the 18 beers on tap.

20 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2011

GIMME A BREAK It has been called an adult playground, and with 14 billiards tables, 2 ping pong tables, darts, air hockey, hoops, and foosball, it’s no wonder locals flock to Break Bar & Billiards. For the fall months, their ten HD televisions will be showing the full NFL package, as well as virtually every other sporting event broadcasted. “You really have to see this space,” explains Louie Paloubis, co-owner. “Of course it’s perfect for friends and large groups. But it’s also great for dates who don’t want to just sit at a table in awkward silence.” With 7,000 square feet decorated with reclaimed wooden tables, an elevated ceiling, a selection of 18 different beers, and a full menu (currently being reworked with a consulting chef ), there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Happy hour extends from 4-8pm weekdays, featuring $3 bottled beers, $4 drafts and wine, $5 cocktail specials, and free billiards while dining and drinking. The fouryear-old tradition of trivia for drink tickets continues on Tuesday evenings beginning at 8:30pm. But the most exciting special events scheduled for October will be NFL game day raffles, with prizes that include three flat panel televisions, two bicycles, game tickets, three iPods, three iPads, and more. You can also contact Break to find out how to join one of their billiards leagues.

BLACKBIRD’S SINGING ON 30TH AVE For the NFL season kickoff, the energy in the crowded bar was tangible, the jukebox silenced, cocktail servers working swiftly to refill buckets of beer, platters of buffalo wings, hot dogs, and… pastry puffs loaded with chorizo and wild mushrooms covered in a sherry cream sauce? It’s true, the menu at Blackbird’s offers far more than just your typical pub fare with spinach and chicken casseroles blanketed in mozzarella, and even a burger that is a 50/50 blend of beef and chopped bacon. Beyond a standout menu and beautiful polished dark wood high tops and an expansive bar, Blackbird’s offers special events every single night of the week. SCULPTURE BY NICHOLE VAN BEEK, THE GUSHER, 2011.

Story Brett Jones

Just in time for fall, the Emerging Artists Show will showcase the year’s finest ideas and creations. Featuring 20 emerging artists, this year’s exhibit – held at Socrates Sculpture Park – will be one of the most spectacular and diverse yet. The exhibit, which began September 10 and will run until March 2012, showcases the work of Emerging Artist Fellows (EAF). THIS YEAR’S EXHIBIT Selected annually through an WILL BE ONE OF THE open application process, artists MOST SPECTACULAR AND are evaluated on exhibition DIVERSE YET. histories, personal statements, project proposals, references and vision by a committee of past EAF recipients who are passionate about helping new, up-and-coming artists. The exhibit isn’t limited to a singular theme, allowing for a selection of works that are diverse in style, materials and process of creation. Roxanne Jackson’s SCULPTURE BY NICOLAS TOURON, GIRAFFE, 2010. Disenchanted Forest, for example, is made from geodes, variegated gold leaf and concrete, among other materials. Jesse A. Greenberg’s Terra-Plaza, on the other hand, is composed of too many obscure materials to list, ranging from sempervivums to bones. Similarly, Nicolas Touron’s Giraffe is made entirely of aluminum, while Jason Clay Lewis’ Black Tide Tower stands 18-feet tall and consists of only a 16-gallon steel barrel and enamel. Visitors should also notice an abundance of locally found, industrial materials. “Long Island City is home to many high end plastics, metal and masonry suppliers,” explained Elissa Goldstone, Interim Exhibition Manager. “This year, EAF artists really took advantage of these resources.” Socrates Sculpture Park is open 365 days a year from 10 a.m. to sunset.
