June 20, 2017 Dear Friends, It is with great appreciation that we welcome you to the 2017 Julian Tile Charity Golf Tournament in Memory of Adriana Funaro. Thank you for attending today and for your continued and unwavering support. As you may already know, the proceeds from this tournament are shared between the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Michael Cuccione Cancer Research Labs at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Two causes that are hugely important to so many people in our community. We dedicate this Tournament to Adriana Funaro, our Burnaby Sales Manager who in 2011, at the age of 44, succumbed to Myelodysplastic Syndrome. She is missed greatly and will never be forgotten. In Adriana’s memory, we fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Michel Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program at B. C. Children’s Hospital is performing great work for Children afflicted with this illness and they are working hard to develop new treatments to save lives. Michael’s legacy lives on through his parents and we are proud to partner with them to continue Michael’s vision to lay the groundwork and raise awareness believing that research holds the key to a cure. Thanks to your generosity, we have raised over $270,000 to date for these important causes. In addition, Julian Tile will match all green fees paid and donate this value equally to both of our charities. Big thanks go out to our numerous donors and sponsors, particularly to Giusti Wine and Custom Building Products for their generous Sponsorship contributions. Once again, thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of Sick Kids and those afflicted with Blood Cancers.
Together we can make a difference!

Adriana Funaro
Adriana was a valued employee and Sales Manager for Julian Tile from May 2003. She was a beautiful, intelligent and hardworking wife, mother and employee who was loved by her co-workers and customers alike. She succumbed on February 21, 2011 at the young age of 44 to Myelodysplastic Syndrome (a blood disorder). Adriana will never be forgotten and today, in her memory, we are fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Special Speaker
Dr. Schultz Dr. Schultz has been the head of the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program since its inception in 2010. Dr. Schultz is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia and his work focuses on improving leukemia treatments and blood and marrow transplantation as immune therapy for cancer. Since Dr. Schultz has become the leader of the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program, he has expanded the program to make it the second largest childhood cancer research group in Canada.
Our Emcee
George Gordon George Gordon is a longtime friend of of the Julian Tile Memorial Golf Tournament and is honoured to be invited back to emcee this important event after nearly a decade. The award winning broadcast journalist spent 11 years as Executive Editor and morning news anchor at Vancouver's News1130 radio station. During his professional career, George felt it his duty to help worthwhile causes as a speaker and emcee. He covered the valiant fight of Michael Cuccione against cancer. He also knew our late Julian Tile manager, Adriana Funaro. George and his wife of 43 years, Shirley, recently retired to Penticton where he is now very involved with Rotary and its good work. They also play a little golf and, maybe, visit a winery once in a while.
Michael Cuccione Foundation and
Childhood Cancer Research
Michael Cuccione imagined a world without childhood cancer. He had the courage and vision to lay the groundwork and raise awareness believing that research holds the key to finding a cure. Michael raised enough funds to establish two lifetime endowments for young researchers giving the brilliant minds of today the opportunity to train and become the childhood cancer research leaders of tomorrow. From his vision of hope he founded the Michael Cuccione Foundation with a mission of funding childhood cancer research. Researchers in The Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program at BC Children's Hospital continue to honour Michael’s legacy by treading ever closer to developing treatments that will not only address the ongoing needs of children to experience lifelong healing, but to ultimately achieve Michael Cuccione Michael’s dream of finding a cure for cancer. Michael believed that a cure for cancer could be found in a child and that "One can only do so much, but together we can make a difference!”

Someday is
today
We often hear people say “someday there will be a cure for cancer, someday we won’t lose the people we love.” The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada is to make “someday” today! OVER 138,000 CANADIANS ARE AFFECTED BY A BLOOD CANCER • • • •
More than 3,100 people in British Columbia are diagnosed with a blood cancer every year. Blood cancers are the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children under 14 years Five year survival rates for blood cancers vary greatly from as low as 26% to 92%
TREATMENT ADVANCES ARE AMONG THE BIGGEST IN 40 YEARS In the past two years alone, we have seen several ground-breaking developments in treatments for blood cancers. Novel precision medicines like Vyxeos for patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), are on the cusp of FDA approval in the U.S., paving the way for Health Canada consideration. Immunotherapies that harness the power of a patient’s immune system to fight disease, such as CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor T-cells) provide patients with new options to conquer their blood cancer and live healthier and longer lives. LONGER, HEALTHIER LIVES ARE A REALITY
