Community Building Dance School This project is the first project of the student’s third year of Bachelor Degree at London Metropolitan University in 2020. The site is located in Whitechapel, London, United Kingdom. The area is influenced by an Islamic culture which is attempted to be even more enhanced by the proposed design. The student proposed a dance school with Tanoura Dance as the leading dance. The main precedent of the building is the Cork House, designed by Matthew Barnett Howland with Dido Milne and Oliver Wilton. The architects focused on sustainability and new approach to contemporary architecture which tries to minimize negative impact on the environment through using the natural material, cork.

Tanoura dance is a Sufi spectacle which praises the power of Allah. The traditional show starts with reciting old verses from an ancient poetry and Koran to set the audience for the rest of the show. With all its beauty and richness of Muslim traditions behind the dance, the design was seen as a part of the future for the Whitechapel. It was something the site was definiately lacking in and the people would find benefits in the place.

Whitechapel is a vibrant part of East London where most of the citizens and business holders are Bangladeshi and White British citizens. The leading religion of the area is Islam and after that around 15% of the citizens (per each group) are Christians or Hindus.

The brief asks the students to survey the site and from the gathered information conclude what type of community building there is a need for.

The reason why it is so easy to portray Whitechapel as a Muslim area is because of its apperance. There is number of Muslim organizations, restaurants, clothes shops and schools. 1 Mosque

Cork attempt 1 The unusual form of the structure of the building brings questions such as: How to accommodate the steps - do I want to treat them as an outside balconnies or seats for people?

Cork attempt 2 The second cork model comes after having the cork features analyzed. The steps of the upper part of the building are 500mm high. The lower steps’ heights are adjusted to the floor and room heights. The sun path was also considered carefully to provide as much sun as possible to every resident around and on the site without blocking the daylight.

Due to the safety of the building users, the large windows in the Main Building are not designed to be open.

There are three ways (displayed above; A, B, C) of solving the window detail. Option A suggests a window which follows the main idea of the building without disturbing its overall look. Option B requires resizing rooms which will not work in favour of the position of the staircase in the Main Building. Lastly, option C changes the desirable look of the design.

Process of designing

Design Process The building aims to be inspired by Tanoura dance. The idea behind its structure was to be very dynamic and unpredictable, similarly to the dancer who while spinning around plays with skirt taking it off and putting it back down. The Cork Dance School is a perfect place for people from all around the world to learn folklore Muslim dances main of which is Tanoura dance. Designed as one of the most carbon efficient dance schools, the whole building is made out of cork and engineered timber only.

By making the building a big cork structure it aims to bring the awarness of sustainability during everyday activities. The passive design methods enables to reduce its energy needs and prevent from overlayering the building construction. The cork blocks can be reused after demolition of the building which also positively impact the sustainable designing policy.

Community Building Textile Campus The following project is one of the projects of the student’s second year at London Metropolitan University. The student proposed an idea of a textile campus whose location was set in Whitechapel, nearby Aldgate East, London, United Kingdom. Because the main point of interest were the narrow alleyways around the site which create en enclosed spaces, the student set certain aims for the project. The goal of the design was to design a big gathering courtyard in order to create the feeling of a city within a city. There were three types of buildings introduced: Gap Building, Main Building and Housing. The Gap Building is like an invita-

tion, a little bit of taste of the design - it sits on the Whitechapel High Street. Entering the site, the next building people are able to see is the Main Building. The Housing is located opposite the Main building. On the ground floor of the Gap Building there are small shops units which state as an extension of the high street. On the other floors of the building there is a huge library living around spacious staircase. On the top floor there is an extra workshop space. The Main Building consits of 4 meters foyer, cosy canteen and kitchen, teaching rooms and big, 5 meters workshop on the top floor. On the ground floor of the Housing there is another workshop with sewing machines and looms. eching: technique explored to develop the rooms and other spaces within the building

Case Study Belvue School In order to familiarise with the architectural technical drawings students were asked to develop three boards with detail drawing of a given case study. The student showcased Belvue School project designed by Studio Weave for children with learning difficulties.

Internship Design One Studio Main tasks in the office were to work on improving the student’s design and software skills but more importantly the architects wanted her to understand the relationship between client, contractor and architect in Sri Lanka. There were a lot of meetings and site visits which the student took part in. The main issue was that the contractors did not follow the architects’ advice and request what slowed down the building process significantly. They also used worse finishing materials in order to cut expenses what led to poor design outcome and floor damage. Generic Perspective GSEducationalVersion

In the office the student was working on developing her own design under the architects’ supervision. Usually, houses in Sri Lanka have a lot openings because of the hot humid climate. People are used to living surrounded by nature what explains trees around. This project was based on a one of the housing projects developed in the office.
