Design Challenge. Combining design, technology and business innovations the students were asked to create a co-work and co-live space for 100 IDEO fellows in New York City’s Lower East Side. They were given a two story building space with a central core located on the 21st and 22nd floor of a NYC high rise and were asked to transform the space to accomodate live/work programs. This design will eventually begin to transform the architecture and interaction of the future.

A Work and Live Environment

Concept. Throughout history man was always a companion with technology. This relationship becomes a dual growth that can be transported anywhere. Now more than ever the current generation takes their work with them through their laptop or even on their mobile device. Currently, establishments are beginning to mix in this idea of nomadic work. In 2050: Person: Living will be stationary, work will be mobile. Spatially: Living is mobile, work is stationary.

[CO]WORK Work Is Mobile

Nomadic Work. With growing companies trying to expand and to cater to all getting the most feedback is beneficial. The purpose behind these coworking spaces is to bounce ideas off one another and to help guide an idea to a final product. Our spaces allow for work to be collaborative and on-the-go.

[CO]LIVE Stationary Living

Live Where You Work. The Pods allow for individuals to escape the commual spaces for a more private work space. Big enough for two, the space can be a place of collaboration. The space underneath the Pods allows for light to filter through and adds more space for interaction.

A Work and Live Environment

Concept. The goal for this design was to create a Work/ Live environment where the boundaries of spaces designated for working and living were undefined. This was done with the hopes of creating a place where ideas could continuously flow through the interactions the users of the space have throughout the day. This was achieved through three methods. 1 Split Living Quarters - Divided sleeping spaces create small community groups within the building. Theses groups can serve as teams for large projects and give residents a “home base of closer friends. 2 Double Height Spaces - Double height spaces serve as gathering areas for larger groups of people. As this is a Live Work space, one is intended for relaxation, and the other serves as a lecture space. Both spaces have operable glazing systems to let in fresh air. 3 Organizing Walls - L shaped walls placed throughout the space break the work/live area into smaller, more personal spaces. These walls extend from the bottom of the first floor, to the top of the second. 18

Program Layout. The program is separated into two main sections:

Live • • Work • • •

Beds Private Bedroom Study Areas Relaxation Lounges Work Areas

Other Programs: • Gym • Auditorium • Rock Climbing Wall

19

Floor Plan. The “L shaped walls punch through the floor of the second level, creating a two story work space where users can share ideas quickly by yelling down to the first level, or tossing a written note up to the second. The sleeping areas in the space are nine feet tall, allowing three rooms to be stacked on top of one another. The second and third level rooms are accessed by a ladder, which leads the user to their own private door. Individual rooms were provided to allow habitants of the space to have a room where they could be alone, away from the collaborative areas. The first and second levels are identical, except for one area, where on the second level a kitchen replaces the gym and recreation area.

First Floor 20

Second Floor

21

Section. As the "L" shaped walls push through the second floor, a hole is created in the floor plate. These holes serve as areas were ideas can flow freely between the first and second levels of the work space. This is done primarily through the use of post it notes. As multiple ideas are being generated at once, they can be quickly written down and stuck to these walls. Later in the day, as other users pass by the notes, ideas can be expanded upon to make them stronger.

2050 Concept. Our idea revolves around two central concepts: a running track and collaborative spaces. Our running track cuts through the building on both floors, and it is connected through a sky-ramp cantilevering off of the building. Collaborative space allows our IDEO tenants to use each space to its maximum potential. Our track intersects every part of the program, making an imperative statement about how we think future societies will be structured; In our targeted 2050 design, physical and mental health are of utmost importance. Meanwhile, our collaborative spaces make sure the work area is filled with opportunities for progressive interaction.

The Track. The exterior running track creates a physical circulation loop around the 20TH and 21ST floors of IDEO's new collaborative workspace.

34

35

36

Work Flow. Every space has natural viewpoints to the running track, allowing workers to constantly stay connected with the rest of the building, and the city beyond.

37

38

The HUB. This exterior terrace runs the length of the building, giving IDEO workers a big outside area to talk and relax. The track circulates both above and through this collaboration hub.

43

2050 Concept. The design concept is to create a positive environmental work place by dividing the space in three different components which are the collaboration space, the private work area, and the fun space. The collaboration, diversity + fun program will make the work place more enjoyable, and will promote diversity and creativity in a work place.

THE HIVE

53

2050 Concept. The Hive is designed to influence the coordination of group activities. The Hexagon. “In Nature there is a hidden geometric force that underpins and pervades all nature.” – Prof. Marcus du Sautoy. Nature will always find the most efficient way to economize to resolve a problem. In the case of the honeybee, the hexagonal array is the most efficient way to store an object. The very nature of the shape requires less material when arrayed. The Hive replicates this efficient process to divide space and facilitate commonalities.

The Honeybee. Honeybees are masters at optimizing there needs with what they have in varying shaped spaces. By assigning designated workers to designated spaces, their hive can operate effectively within a controlled chaotic state. Hive functionality is performed by three main bee types. Individually, Worker – perform all the labors of the hive, Drones – fertilize the queen, and Queens – produce all the functional workers of the hive. Collectively, these three types complete all the essential tasks of keeping the group alive and

functioning successfully. There is an organization to it. Workers and Queens in habit the core while the hive operates as such, Workers, Protection, Cluster, and Scouts which is defined by the location of the bee in the hive. In the winter, Honeybees cluster together for warmth and spread out and search for other possible nesting areas during the summer if the one there are currently in has been compromised.

Concept. The floor plan was designed to exhibit the same spatial qualities to induce the same spatial effect as a bee hive. By grouping workspaces within a semi enclosure, workers will be more likely to interact and network amongst themselves from different professions, subsequently forging connections that may be useful to themselves in the future. Although, there is a lot of public space there are moments of privacy as well. Hidden amongst the public environment is designed private space. For instance, within the communal workspace, there is sectional workspace for

specific occupations, offering those of the same profession or group a chance to think and operate in a smaller group. The living and outdoor spaces are spread out and pushed to the edge away from the commotion in the center to provide more private spaces. Even within the stacked hexagon living quarters “The Hive” are private moments. Privacy can be achieved by lowering one’s textile curtain so he/she can enjoy his/her space with more anonymity.

57

THE HIVE POD Concept. The hexagon cell is large enough to accommodate one person per cell as well as a few storage items because of its embedded storage units. In addition, it comes with an adjustable TV mount for those wishing to hang a personal television as well as wireless charging station.

INTERLOCK Danielle Felicione. Tom Casey.

65

2050 Concept. An Intertwining of Live and Work with the choice of collaboration or privacy. Our Design for the space is inspired by the idea of giving every resident a space to work and live while also giving them the choice to work alone or to collaborate with other like minded individuals.

66

The Unit. For the unit design we wanted to physically interlock live and work. So we shifted the ceiling heights and aligned the necesary features of each space. The differed ceiling heights create both the desk for the work space and seating for the desk. The height of the desk is even with the floor around it and each unit has a garage like door and a set of sliding doors that open up to the public or close to create a private space at the choice of the resident. This creates a flexible unit that caters to the preferences of the resident.

67

First Floor Plan

Second Floor Plan

68

Third Floor Plan

Plans. Each resident would get there own room to live, office to work, and even a balcony to share with the community all in one unit. Our design is organized into two programs. The outer shell and the inner core. Outer Shell. The outer shell has all of the live work spaces and all of the program to support the living of the residents. Programs such as laundry, bathrooms, and a fitness center would be located in the outer shell. Inner Core. Public programs that emphasize the collaborative environment of a work space such as lecture space, living rooms, and a kitchen with a dining space.
