Swimming
for 2+ woodwinds, 1+ piano, and electronics
2016
PROGRAM NOTE intransitive verb /’swim/ 1 a: to propel oneself in water by natural means b: to play in the water 2 to move with a motion like that of swimming 3 a: to float on a liquid : not sink b: to surmount difficulties 4 to become immersed in or flooded with or as if with a liquid 5 to have a floating or reeling appearance or sensation —Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2016 MATERIALS Laptop, Max patch (available upon request. Note: it is not necessary to have Max installed to run the standalone patch), audio interface, and stereo PA. SETUP A minimum of two woodwinds is required for this piece. Performers may be staged broadly within the performance space according to the inclinations and imaginations of the performers. Care should be taken to establish sightlines and audibility for cuing purposes. All woodwinds stagger entrances at the circular figures on the first and third pages. Select soloists for the through-composed material on page two. If using more than one piano, space pianos as far apart as cuing and communication permit. Select a primary pianist to cue electronics from a laptop placed on or near the piano (this can also be done by an auxiliary performer if preferred). NOTES Woodwinds: 1. (page1) Begin with this cell and move clockwise around the circle. After each cell has been played, move freely among cells repeating and developing their content at will. During this page, create the overarching dynamic shape: p f mp. Local variations in dynamic are welcome and can deviate slightly or greatly from this shape. 2. (page 1) When players are ready to move on to page two, each woodwind player must repeat the last cell. When all players have repeated this cell, soloists begin page two and other players rest. 3. (page 3) As before (1). After each cell has been played clockwise, repeat and develop material from cells in either woodwind part. During this page, create the overarching dynamic shape: f ff p. As before, local deviations in dynamic are welcome. 4. (page 3) Any woodwind may play the final ending after the diminuendo. Piano and electronics: Max: Cues are executed by pressing the corresponding letter key on the laptop. A timer may be used at the beginning of the piece, or durations may be felt and approximated. Piano: Enter around 1:40’ after D pitch class swell in electronics. D# is optional and written parenthetically. After both lines have been played, move freely between lines repeating and developing their content at will. Play continuously throughout the piece, without pausing between sections. + Add at any point after other piano material cells have been repeated and developed at least twice. © Julie Herndon 2016
