TRANSPARENTUDES (can’t ___ you) for percussion trio

PROGRAM NOTE These etudes on displacement feature a light bulb “singer” and other relocated voices. PERFORMANCE NOTES Each movement is to be separated by other works. MATERIALS • 60-120 Watt incandescent light bulb installed in simple floor standing light fixture • Slide dimmer with silent on/off switch • Transducer speaker with 3.5mm (1/8”) or 1/4” audio jack • Condenser microphone (and interface if necessary) placed near timpano head • Max patch (available upon request). Note: it is not necessary to have Max software installed on the laptop to run the standalone patch • MIDI controller: Korg Nano2 or other similar controller with at least 5 channel record and solo functions • Handheld vocal microphone and stand (prop: does not have to be functional) SETUP Movement 1.

GENERAL Grace notes come before the beat. MARIMBA Range: 5 octaves Mallets: yarn TIMPANO Range:
Mallets: soft gong beater and superball (or fingers if preferred for friction gliss.)
LIGHT BULB
’ Breath marks: switch off light quickly between notes (to simulate a breath) TRANSDUCER/MIDI CONTROLLER Place transducer on head of timpano about four inches from rim, or so that it resonates as clearly as possible. Example MIDI controller cue: S button to press 4 channel \/ exact beat indicator LIP SYNC Mic placement: close to mouth, starting position parallel to ground, so that it obscures the audiences’ view of the performer’s mouth. Move head with pitch contour: chin down = low pitches // chin up = high pitches (Example 1, pictured below). Raise and lower mic to side on cue (Example 2). a) b) c)
