GREEN ZIONISM Hadassah and JNF have been partners since 1926 in making a living commitment to Israel—a promise that the land will belong to the Jewish people forever. By working toward reforestation, preparing the land for agriculture, creating parks, playgrounds and recreation sites and providing urgently needed water conduits such as dams, aquifers and reservoirs, Hadassah and JNF have been practicing the most tangible form of Zionism for generations. Israel’s forests are one of the wonders of the Jewish state. A country where there were no natural forests became the only nation to have more trees with each passing year. Settlers and volunteers planted each seedling by hand, which before 2006 totaled more than 240 million trees throughout the country. Their accomplishment gave Israel trees that: • offset carbon dioxide emissions (a main cause of global warming), • cool buildings in summer, • create barriers to strong winds, • filter pollutants from the atmosphere, • prevent soil erosion, flooding and landslides, • provide food and shelter for wildlife and • act as a sound barrier to urban noise. All of which made an unmatched contribution to Israel’s environment—and all accomplished within a century.
AS DIVERSE AS THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL Like the State of Israel, forests thrive on diversity. To increase the health of the newly planted woodlands, JNF’s Forestry Department, along with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, the Ministry of Environmental Defense and the Ministry of Agriculture are rising to the challenge of creating sustainable forests. Fast-growing pine trees from Europe’s Black Forest and native Jerusalem pine were planted by early Eastern European olim (immigrants). They knew that fertile topsoil was needed to turn the desert into The Land of Milk and Honey. Planting trees went a long way in creating this by providing an herbaceous layer to trap water and deposit compost. During the rocket attacks from Lebanon, fires burned away much of the nutrientrich soil that took 50 years to develop and left an impenetrable crust that repels water—increasing the threat of erosion, flood and mudslides. To combat this problem and allow for greater resistance to fire and disease, the lost pines will be replaced by a mixture of conifers, including the more resilient brutia pine, and broadleaf trees. Fruit- and berry-bearing trees will also be planted to increase food and nesting places for wildlife and beautify the landscape for visitors. Among the trees chosen for planting will be: Native oaks, carob, redbud, almond, pear, hawthorn, Atlantic cedar, cypress, stone pine, brutia pine and Canary Island pine

HEALING THE LAND During the war with Lebanon in the summer of 2006, rocket attacks in northern Israel destroyed two million trees and more than 13,000 acres of land including 70 percent of the Naftali Forest and large areas of the Biriya Forest. JNF fire trucks, some more than 20 years old, were used by foresters who battled valiantly amid falling missiles to contain the fires—but their equipment wasn’t up to such heavy usage. To make the North home again, Hadassah made a decision to address this critical situation by participating in JNF’s Operation Northern Renewal. This 10-year, $400 million, world-wide campaign will reforest the devastated woodlands; prepare for future emergencies by purchasing 10 large fire trucks, 25 emergency response vehicles and a fire-fighting airplane; upgrade parks and recreation sites; and develop tourism, an essential component of the North’s economy.

ALONG CAME THE WATER Hadassah’s assistance in Operation Northern Renewal is vital and was begun with a desperately needed contribution. Etched on a plaque on the side of a splendidly crimson fire truck at the Hatzor Haglilit fire-fighting center in northern Israel are words from the traditional Passover tune Had Gadya, “…and along came the water that extinguished the fire…” This playful statement embodies the fire truck’s serious purpose—and the reason it was donated by Hadassah in early 2007—to bring vitally needed state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment to the North. This new fire truck is better suited to navigate the rough terrain found in forested regions. But one truck is not enough.
