Remote villages – untouched by the commercialization of big cities – offer opportunities to experience the local cultures first-hand, and perhaps make a few new friends.

We’ll see the Writers’ Building, General Post Office, High Court, Raj Bhawan (Governor’s House), Town Hall, Council House, Treasury Building, Reserve Bank of India, as well as Dalhousie Square. We’ll enjoy a tour of St. John’s Church, which was built in 1756 by Lt. Colonel James Agg and houses India’s oldest functioning pipe organ as well as a painting of the Last Supper by German artist Johann Zoffany. As we stroll the grounds, we’ll see several tombs of British Generals who lost their lives during the Siege of Kolkata in 1756 by Nawab Shriaj Ud Daula. Finally, we’ll visit the impressive Victoria Memorial Museum before returning to the Ganges Voyager for lunch and the start of our journey upstream. This afternoon, we’ll board our excursion boats and go ashore at Bandel, a port founded by Portuguese settlers in the 1800s. Day 6 KALNA Today begins with a ride through the city center of Kalna en route to the enchanting Rajbari complex, where we’ll find the highest concentration of temples in the region. The complex contains a unique mixture of West Bengal architecture. On one side of the road we’ll find the Nabakailas temples. Built in 1809 by the Bardhaman Maharaja, this complex contains 108 slopedroof temples, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and arranged in two concentric circles. The outer circle consists of 74 temples of alternating black and white lingams; the 34 temples of the inner circle have only white lingams. On the other side of the road we’ll find a walled complex containing the Pratapeshwar temple. Built in 1849, this marvelous structure features terra cotta tablets depicting scenes from Hindu epics, the mythical life of Sree Chaitanya, images of Durga, and various aspects of day-to-day life in the region.

Other temples on the site include: Lalji temple, built in 1739, and Krishnachandra, built in 1751. After a day of exploration, we’ll return to the ship for relaxation, restoration, and an evening of fine dining. (B/L/D)

Day 7 M A TIA R I Early this morning, you’ll have the opportunity to stroll through the streets of the brass working village of Matiari. Here, skilled craftsmen have earned a reputation for transforming recycled copper into beautiful brass platters, bowls, and figurines using traditional methods passed down through
the generations. After our visit, we’ll return to the ship for breakfast and continue upstream to Khushbagh. En route, we’ll sail past Plassey where, in 1757, Robert Clive of the British East India Company defeated the Mughal Nawabs and their French allies, establishing the company rule in India that expanded over much of South Asia for the next 190 years. (B/L/D)

Day 8 KHUSHBAG H, BARANAGAR, MUR SHI D AB AD Today we’ll arrive in the village of Khushbagh and embark
on an early morning excursion to the mosque of Nawab Ali-Wardi-Khan whose grandson, Siraj-al-Dawlah, was defeated by the British East India Company at the Battle of Plassey. Back on board, we’ll enjoy a refreshing breakfast as we sail to Baranagar. A lovely example of life in rural India in the 18th century, the village of Baranagar features several temples built by Rani Bhabani, a beloved local aristocrat (zamindar) and generous philanthropist. These temples are considered to be among the finest examples of terra cotta art in West Bengal. After visiting the temples, we’ll return to the ship for lunch and sail downstream past charming villages to the city of Murshidabad. In Murshidabad we’ll visit the XIXth Century Hazarduari Palace, which was built in the Italian architectural style during the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah. The palace features more than a thousand doors (900 of which are false), 114 rooms, and vast corridors filled with priceless antiques, paintings, and manuscripts. Opposite to the palace is a dramatic imambara. After our tour, we’ll enjoy a scenic ride on a horsedrawn cart to the Katra Mosque. This mosque was built in 1724 by the first Nawab of Murshidabad, Murshid Quli Khan. As the sun sets, we’ll return to the ship for dinner and a lively performance by dancers from a West Bengal dance school. (B/L/D)

More than half of the project has been funded by American Alfred B. Ford, the great grandson of Henry Ford. After this remarkable experience, we’ll return to the ship for dinner and an evening of relaxation. (B/L/D)

Day 10 CH A ND A NNA GAR Not to be outdone by their British counterparts, in 1673 the French obtained permission from Nawab Ibrahim Khan to establish a trading post on the riverbanks of Chandannagar.
