Be Sun Savvy Follow these expert tips to protect yourself from the sun and heat so you can enjoy your summer. BY JULIE KENDRICK 1 WEAR A HAT Even with diligent use, sunscreen doesn’t provide 100% protection from the sun’s rays, says Jeanie Leddon, M.D., Ph.D., a dermatologist at the Boulder Valley Center for Dermatology. Donning a hat can protect your face, neck, and noggin. Leddon likes UPF 50+ Wallaroo hats, which are crafted to block 97% of UV rays. ($34 and up, WallarooHats.com) 2 CHOOSE A BETTER SUNSCREEN Opt for mineral-based
sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which form a physical barrier on your skin to block the sun’s rays, says Leddon. One widely available option: Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen. ($19 for 5 oz., BlueLizard.net) 3 COVER UP WITH UPF Let your clothes provide sun protection by choosing items with a UPF rating, which indicates fabric that has been treated to block UV rays, suggests Leddon. We like the L.L. Bean moisturewicking UPF 50+ sun shirt, which comes in extended sizes. ($45, LLBean. com) You can also wash UV protection into any clothing with the laundry aid Sunguard. ($4, Store.SunguardUV.com)

INSULATE YOUR INSULIN
If you’re out for the day, shield insulin from the sunlight and consider storing it in a cooler bag (away from ice packs). Asha Brown, executive director of the nonprofit We Are Diabetes, relies on the Kerri tote from Myabetic to carry her diabetes supplies. “It’s big enough for two bottles of water, and it has an insulated pouch so my insulin pens don’t overheat,” she says. ($145, Myabetic.com)

6 HELP DEVICES STICK GrifGrips adhesive patches can help keep CGMs and insulin pumps in place during summer activities, says Lauren Solomon, a development coordinator with the nonprofit JDRF. The variety of colors and designs makes them perfect for any age. ($5+, GrifGrips.com)
4 STAY HYDRATED Proper hydration can help with blood sugar management, says Marshall O'Brien, a chef and nutritional wellness consultant in Minneapolis. While any water bottle will do, O’Brien likes S’well’s insulated water bottles: “They’re incredibly durable and keep liquids cold (or hot) for hours.” ($25 and up, SwellBottle.com)
