NOVEMBER PROGRAM: Guest Speaker: Jennifer Willard Community School of the Arts The Paris Apartment Boutique and Tea Room 4461 Kingston Pike (Western Plaze) (865) 766-5511
Thursday, November 6th, 2014 The Community School of the Arts located in the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Knoxville and is an after school program that provides free, quality instruction in the performing , visual, and culinary arts to underserved inner city and rural area youth of East Tennessee. The programs are designed to promote self confidence, self awareness, and good citizenship through active participation in the arts. The School currently serves 158 students per week at its "main campus" in First Presbyterian Church and an additional 60 children through offsite programs at Knox County's Green Magnet STEAM Academy. Student turnover is minimal (the average length of stay for any one child in the program is currently 7 years), and the School has operated in the black every year of its existence. A Finalist in 2010 and 2013 for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the Community School of the Arts has been named "one of the top arts- and humanities-based programs in the country" by the National Endowment for the Arts and the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. One of CSA's biggest showcases is the annual Side-by-Side apprentice program, which pairs students with local artists to learn their craft. Most artists like to work with one student year after year and provide a level of mentorship beyond just teaching the art form. Jennifer Willard was appointed the first Executive Director of the CSA in 1992. Over the course of her 22-year tenure, the after school program has helped hundreds of students forge a path to continuing education and career opportunities. (continued on page 3)

President’s Letter
In everything give thanks. -1 Thessalonians 5:18
Supporting Physician Families Past :: Present :: Future
I am sure you have heard the phrase: “It is good to be blessed. It's better to be a blessing.” I believe that KAMA is both! KAMA is blessed to have so many fine women dedicated to a common purpose of improving health care in the Knoxville community; KAMA members are blessed by the support created for our “physician families” through the friendships in our organization. And I hope we can all consider KAMA to be a blessing to the organizations and individuals in our community who benefit from the work we do. I give thanks for all of you and for the opportunity to make a positive difference on healthcare in Knoxville. October was a busy month for KAMA. We unveiled our new logo, which we are blessed to be able to share with KAM. We were blessed with another fun and successful Fashiondrama event and I look forward to this spring when we can share the proceeds with our community. At our October monthly meeting we learned about cancer treatment with proton therapy at Provision; First Hand cooked for Ronald McDonald House; KAMA Klimbers hiked to Elkmont; Juliann Chavez found a new outlet for our Health Promotions efforts by including SAVE materials in Child Health Week events sponsored by Children’s Hospital; and individuals from KAMA participated in the Komen Race for the Cure in honor/remembrance of fellow KAMA members who have battled breast cancer. In November, in addition to our regular activities, we have two important areas to focus on: “A Little More Conversation” fundraiser for Conversation Ready and Dues Renewal!! KAMA is partnering with KAM to hold a fundraiser for the Conversation Ready initiative. The event, a “60’sthemed” band party, will be held on November 7, 2014 at NV and is being organized by Jacque Prince and Robin Hutchins. Conversation Ready is an effort to raise awareness about end-of-life planning so that health care providers are prepared to receive patients’ wishes about end-of-life care. KAM would like to promote this initiative in our area. “The Conversation Project is a public campaign with a simple and transformative goal: to have every person’s end-of-life wishes expressed and respected….As people express their wishes, it’s critical that health care systems have the people and processes to hear and respect what’s being said. IHI calls this being “conversation ready.” (Institute for Healthcare Improvement.) You can read more about the event in the dedicated newsletter announcement. November 1 also marks the beginning of our Membership Renewal Drive. In the past there has been some confusion about when dues should be paid and what year they apply to. To help clarify this, we have redesigned the membership form and designated the timeframe of November 1 to January 31 for current members to renew memberships for the upcoming year. Also, to help with the editing and production of the KAMA Yearbook, WE NEED EVERY MEMBER TO FILL OUT A RENEWAL FORM EACH YEAR. For your convenience, you can find the new membership form at the end of this newsletter. All checks should be made payable to KAMA and sent to Swannee Sexton, c/o KAMA, PO Box 10551, Knoxville, TN 37939. You may also bring your renewal form and check to any KAMA meeting. Enjoy this beautiful weather and the autumn colors!! Hope to see you for our meeting on November 6!

Medication Safety Committee Update The Medication Safety Committe is a KAMA committee dedicated to promote awareness in both KAMA and the community regarding the safe use of medications. Our focus is Antiobiotic Safety for our winter months. The CDC has issued a recent report** about the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance has become one of the most serious and growing threats to public health. The CDC has requested $30 million in President Obama's 2015 budget specifically for the "Detect and Protect Against Antibiotic Resistance" initiative". We plan on providing the CDC materials to primary care practices, the health department and have asked own "Dr Bob" to do a program with our own Dr. Prayana Joseph. If interested in helping with this project please contact Jacque Prince or Dr. Prayana Joseph. **CDC report: Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States 2013 This is a "must read" for all of us WE NEED YOUR HELP and it is EASY!! The CDC has a wealth of free educational materials available on their website. We are asking each KAMA member to request these free materials and bring them to our November and December meeting. Here is how: Google CDC.gov/getsmart Click on Campaign Materials Click Print materials Click on brochures, posters, (order free small quanities) Have them mailed to your home and bring them in time for our Nov, Dec or January meeting!

Fashiondrama 2014 :: Southern Vogue I would like to say a very special and well-deserved “Thank You” to all members of the Fashiondrama 2014 committee for working diligently to organize yet another successful event. This year marked the 61st annual Fashiondrama; that is an impressive history of fundraising and dedication to the KAMA mission of improving the health care environment in our community. I would also like to thank all KAMA members and community partners who helped support Fashiondrama this year through their attendance and donations. Thanks to the efforts of the Fashiondrama committee, we surpassed last year’s event in dollars raised through Fashion Sponsors, Corporate Sponsors, Table Vendors, Patron Fund and ticket sales! We had an attendance of approximately 268 guests who braved the rain for a healthy dose of our “Southern Vogue” hospitality! The Fashiondrama 2014 committee will hold a post-show evaluation meeting on Monday, November 10 at 1:30pm at the Homburg Chick-fil-a meeting room. If you have comments about this year’s show or suggestions for improvement, please send them to Cynthia Gash. We will soon begin to organize the committee for Fashiondrama 2015, so if you are interested in working on some aspect of the show please let me know. We welcome your input and participation! Cynthia Gash, KAMA President 2014-2014 and Chair, Fashiondrama 2014

SAVE Program Once again KAMA is making SAVE materials available to school age children through the Knox County Schools guidance counselors. Martha Masterson, Knox County Schools supervisor for this department, has the current information and is presently gathering material orders from the guidance counselors. Martha shared that the guidance counselors access to the classrooms has changed and some counselors may no longer order SAVE materials. Some counselors have expressed an interest in continued use of SAVE materials. Martha will get an order in later in the fall. Nutritionist Juliann Chavez, Ph.D., R.D., LD.N., shared the Hands Are Not For Hitting Placemats at a Children’s Hospital event on Monday, September 29, 2014. Quannah Washington with Tenn Care led Child Health Week, October 7 - 10, and invited us to take part with our SAVE programs. We were not notified in time to order materials but are considering how we can participate in fall 2015. Respectfully submitted, Robin Hutchins and Poonam Harsh
