The Provision Center for Proton Therapy is the first of its kind in Tennessee and only the second in the Southeast. Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses a single beam of high-energy protons to treat various forms of cancer. Our program will include a tour of the 90,000 sq. ft. facility by Bill Hansen, VP of Marketing and a presentation on proton therapy given by Dr. Tamara Vern-Gross. Originally from Chicago, Dr. Vern-Gross received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her medical degree from the Des Moines School of Osteopathic Medicine. After a Pediatric residency at Advocate Christ Hope Children’s Hospital in Chicago, her specific interests in improving quality of life and optimizing symptom management led her to pursue the Harvard Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She subsequently completed her Radiation Oncology training at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC. She comes to the Provision Center for Proton therapy after a Fellowship in Pediatric Proton Therapy at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. Dr.Vern-Gross is board-certified in Radiation-Oncology, Palliative Medicine, and Pediatrics. Provision will be providing lunch for our members at no charge.

KAMA OCTOBER 2014 NEWSLETTER
President’s Letter
One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something. -Henry David Thoreau
In the September newsletter you may have noticed a blurb on “micro-volunteering.” If you didn’t catch it, “micro-volunteering” is a popular concept where individuals can sign up for easy, quick low-commitment actions that can be completed in a brief amount of time (generally under 2 hours) without incurring on-going responsibility. Because of the busy life-styles of people today, many organizations are promoting small but significant participation opportunities in an effort to engage more members. Short-term or one-time volunteer spots are appealing because a person can offer her skills to the organization, but in more flexible and convenient blocks of time. KAMA has many micro-volunteer opportunities and I encourage all members to “do something” this year! Our September meeting at Gettysvue Country Club got the KAMA year off to a great start with an outstanding attendance for our speaker, Ray Smith, who spoke about the history of Oak Ridge and the Manhattan Project. This topic was reinforced in the book club selection, “The Girls of the Atomic City.” We held an evening meeting, featuring a talk by Andria Yates, PHD, on the health benefits of meditation, in an effort to connect with working KAMA members. KAMA successfully hosted a fun and informative TMAA Update, the annual Fall meeting of state alliance members. Also, our First Hand volunteers prepared a meal for Ronald McDonald House; our KAMA Klimbers hiked to Obed Scenic Park; and in “Just For Fun”, our members gathered to attend Greekfest. Now, the big focus is on Fashiondrama 2014, Southern Vogue, scheduled to be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Cherokee Country Club. You should have received your invitation in the mail last week. Fashiondrama is one of two annual fundraisers for KAMA. Proceeds from this event benefit the KAMA Philanthropic Fund which distributes funds each Spring in the form of nursing scholarships and grants to local health nonprofits. Please show your support for KAMA by purchasing your tickets and inviting your friends to attend this very fun morning of fashion! We have a great line-up of Fashion Sponsors and Table Vendors – some new and some returning favorites. We also have a new celebrity model this year and some guest models from the medical community (… you’ll have to attend to see who they are…) So, make plans to attend Fashiondrama; even if it is all you do this year with KAMA, it supports the organization and it counts as doing “something!” Cynthia Gash KAMA President, 2014-2015
Knoxville's Biggest Brain Trivia Night This second year fundraiser benefits InterFaith Health clinic and promises to bring out the fun while exercising your brain! Thursday October 23, 2014 The Standard 412 West Jackson Street, Knoxville 7-10pm $15 per person to benefit InterFaith
The KAMA Logo is Getting a Facelift! The KAMA Communications and Social Media Committee has been working for over a year to plan for an updated logo and website and we are happy to announce that the first phase of this project is now complete: The Board of Directors has approved a new logo for KAMA. Come see the unveiling at the October meeting! Also, if you try to visit the KAMA website, you may see a message that our site is "Under Construction." Now that we have a new logo, we are making plans to immediately work on an updated website. We will keep you updated as things progress. Thank you for your patience during this process.

KAMA Cares
Volunteers Needed for MUSE The MUSE is in the process of recruiting over 200 volunteers for BUILD DAY on Friday, November 14th from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm! Since KAMA’s mission is to help educate the community about the importance of health and wellness choices we want to be a part of ACTIVE PLAY.
Do you know of a KAMA member who is no longer able to attend meetings due to health restrictions or who may be lonely and would appreciate a visit or phone call from a fellow KAMA member? If so, please tell us. We would like her to know that “KAMA Cares” about her!
KAMA members are encouraged to invite friends and neighbors to help. They need the community to reach out in order to complete the work in one day.
KAMA Cares Co-Chairs
The MUSE has been selected as the recipient of a new playground that will be built in Chilhowee Park next to the Muse! The fun part is that this will be a COMMUNITY-BUILT playground put together in ONE DAY! This playground will be available to the public during park hours which is very special as there is not an ACTIVE PLAY area for kids within 2 miles of their location...and there are TONS of kiddos close by.
Sandy Ange
A list of specific job descriptions will be available next month.
This is a new initiative this year. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact us – we would love your help!
Mala Lakshman
Please contact Beth Thomas to RSVP.
