SEPTEMBER PROGRAM: Guest Speaker: Ray Smith, Oak Ridge Historian “Stories of the Secret City” Gettysvue Polo, Golf, & Country Club 9317 Linksvue Dr, Knoxville (865) 522-4653
Thursday, September 4th, 2014 The talk will consist of an overview of early Oak Ridge history including stories of how the East Tennessee location was selected. Historical images from Manhattan Project photographer Ed Westcott will form the basis of the visuals and be the backdrop for the stories of the history of Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project. The role of women in such an important historical chapter will be emphasized. With almost 44 years of experience at the Y-12 National Security Complex, Mr. Smith has developed an extensive appreciation and understanding of the heritage and history of Y-12. He has co-produced the award-winning Secret City DVD set, and has presented a history of Oak Ridge to audiences at Vanderbilt University, University of Tennessee and to numerous local schools, civic clubs and other organizations. He has written eight books, published five photo books and created one audio book. He also publishes two weekly Oak Ridge history newspaper columns. Mr. Smith can be found at the Y-12 History Center where he routinely provides tours of Y-12 and continues to advance the knowledge of The Secret City's unique history. We look forward to his presentation.

President’s Letter Knoxville Academy of Medicine Alliance :: 2014-2015
Supporting Physician Families Life is divided into three terms - that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future. -William Wordsworth
Past :: Present :: Future I am both excited and nervous about the start of this year serving as KAMA President. As you read in my summer newsletter article - and I am sure you all read my summer newsletter article – I have been off to a busy start. AMAA Annual Meeting in Chicago, KAM President Dr. Pat O’Brian’s Resident Physician Meet and Greet, St. Mary’s Legacy Mobile Medical Clinic Groundbreaking, the KAM/ KAMA Summer Welcome Picnic, the UT Nursing School Scholarship Dinner, meetings with committee chairs and planning for Fashiondrama 2014 have been a few of the highlights. Now, with the approach of the September meeting, I am looking forward to connecting with those of you who I have not seen over the summer – and hopefully a few new members as well! Another of my tasks over the summer was to set a theme for this KAMA year. Inspiration came from two topics discussed at the AMAA annual meeting that are relevant in our local organization: physician families and new technologies. While medical alliances focus a lot of effort toward supporting physicians and improving the health of communities through education and philanthropy, we cannot forget the importance of our members supporting each other through friendships and networking. We find that support in each other at all stages of life: medical school, residency, fellowship, practice and retirement. We understand the unique challenges each one of our physician families face from a common perspective. These traditional functions of alliances are now intersecting with new technology that, if embraced, may allow us to connect with each other and serve our communities in more efficient ways. We have taken steps in the past few years to initiate KAMA into social media avenues that will hopefully help KAMA grow and remain relevant into the future. It is my hope this year to continue to support KAMA members, membership, and mission through both personal interaction and technology. We will continue to pursue development of an updated KAMA logo and website and responsible use of social media. We will also continue to support each other and our families through our KAMA activities and with specific outreach to physician spouses in residency and retirement. I won’t do this alone. I am very blessed to be surrounded by so many very kind KAMA colleagues who have offered their support to me for the upcoming year. I truly appreciate it and I am certain I will be calling on those offers!! I can’t wait to see you all on September 4th! Cynthia Gash KAMA President :: 2014-2015

Microvolunteering is a popular concept where individuals can sign up for easy, quick, low commitment actions that can be completed in a brief amount of time (generally under 2 hours) without ongoing responsibility. KAMA/KAM Summer Welcome Picnic a Huge Success! Friday night, August 22nd. we had our first Summer Welcome Picnic for new physicians and their families at the Gettysvue lower pool. This event was sponsored by KAMA and KAM (they helped with invitations, mailing lists and most importantly to us, found funding from TMA). Back Yard Burgers supplied the food and music was provided by Chuck French of "The French Connection". Although it was a bit warm, we had about 100 attend, so the night was a huge success! It was a great opportunity for physicians and their families to meet each other and get to know more about KAMA . While the adults mingled, the children had fun on the playground or swimming in the pool. The feedback from the guests was, "this was great, thanks so much for doing this for us!" So, thanks to all who helped make this happen and I'd say this will be an annual event to look forward to!! Lorraine Johnson, Membership
