Julie Martin’s Summer Project
I use Instagram to document my day to day life; from my recent purchases, to nights out and dinners. My Instagram at the minute is full of festival pictures as I went to three this summer. I particularly enjoy photographing festivals as they are different from the norm and I like to capture the overall feeling of being at a festival so it’s something I can look back on at a later date. I use VSCO cam to edit my photos and I tend to use a bold filter as it’s eye-catching, which is something I like to convey into my work. I thought I would look at my instagram feed as it is very personal and I thought it could give me a starting point for my summer project.
Tumblr From looking at my Instagram account I also thought that I should look at my personal Tumblr as that’s where I’ll re-blog artists, photographers, designers, architects etc because I like their work. I also re-blog text posts, so as you can see above some are silly and some are serious but they are personal to me, such as the post about retail as I work as a sales assistant at Dune Shoes, the post on feminism and the post about gossip as I love it.

Pre- Degree Work I thought I would also look at work I’ve produced from GCSE- Foundation Diploma to remember if there were any projects I particularly enjoyed. At A-Level I did really enjoy drawing and I do miss it so I think I can bring this into future projects by turning my chosen designs into fashion illustrations etc. I also really enjoyed two projects from my Foundation year which were called wrap/ unwrap which you can see in the images of the sketchbooks. I enjoyed this project as I felt that it pushed me well and I really engaged in it. I was able to use materials that I liked, such as silk, chiffon and mesh. I also really liked my Final Major Project from Foundation where I made a long white dress and then produced a video where images of kaleidoscopic flowers were projected onto the dress. I really liked this project as I was able to play around with making patterns.

Degree Work These are a few of my favourite projects from my first year of my degree, because I finally learnt how to actually make garments, rather than just randomly guessing and not understand why I’ve made something too big or too small. I particularly liked the outcome of these three units as well. Even though I did enjoy two of the units where I was able to create patterns, I missed not being able to see what it would look like as a 3d product. I also really enjoyed being able to make my own magazine and produce the illustrations for it as it was something I enjoyed at A-Level. I feel like I engaged with these projects more as well and thus was able to produce something I was happy with.
The white shirt
From looking back at what I’ve found so far I felt that my biggest source of personal inspiration was from being at festivals, so over the next few pages are a few mood-boards.
From my mood-boards I decided to experiment with ink and paint. On this page are my experiments with black and white as I feel like who I am and how I dress as a person is different to who I am as a designer, so this is a mixture of the two. From the experiments I decided to make collages and see what shapes would be created from the patterns. I am happy with the result as I think it combines the two elements of me well.
I then decided to do the same again but with colour and relate it back to Indian architecture and patterns that wer on my Tumblr. I used photoshop to manipulate the paint splatters I made into a kaleidoscope, but I felt that kaleidoscopes were generic, so I decided to mix it up and manipulate the pattern further and then make collages out of it. I really like the use of colour in these visuals.
