The question of an affordable housing market is a dominant issue of today in Sweden. At present, according to the country’s National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, 255 of Sweden’s municipalities are facing a housing shortage. If taking the current level of production, only a few municipalities will be able to overcome crisis within half a decade. Thus, Sweden needs to construct new residences in the amount corresponding to a new Stockholm, with the most growing part of the population being formed by the least financially-able group - young immigrants and locals. A current state of density in Gothenburg, with the main population living in the over-densified central part of the city, does not offer possibilities for larger growth that is needed in the nearest future. The issue of the insufficient housing market provokes a thought that analyzed project of Sweden’s first self-work model cooperative - Stacken could be much more than just an isolated case. The government supported housing unit, that was built as a part of at the time most ambitious housing program in the world - Million Homes Program (1965 - 1974), could serve as a pilot example and a stepping stone for the rest of the Swedish Welfare state satellite towns to be regenerated as well as new managing and ownership models implemented in otherwise orthodox local real estate market. Increasing demand for affordable housing stock serves as a groundbreaking opportunity to rethink the Swedish housing market through the programmatic transformation and densification of existing undetermined land in Million Homes Program districts. Creating new centralities and breaking the perception of Million Homes Program satellite districts as mono-functional dormitory neighborhoods would serve as a tool when strengthening local community cores and reinforcing further metropolitan development of Gothenburg as an interlinked urban archipelago.

Final Look As the study reveals, living areas of Million Homes Program districts do not meet the need of contemporary living demands. Satellite towns embedded in landscapes of forested nature feature an abundant resource of undetermined land that could be employed for further development of Metropolitan Gothenburg. Densification and facilitation of urban islands, when tackling their shortcomings would serve as a tool not only to integrate people through the collaborative living and working, but would also find a place for architectural monuments of Million Homes Program era in the present day.

Road Living
The next generation of applicable affordable land.
Year - 2019 Location - Universal Work type - Student University - Chalmers Technical University, Gothenburg, Sweden Tutor - Jonas Carlson
The project “Road Living focuses on new ways and unexpected solutions when finding affordable land as well as challenges the notion of future transportation, infrastructures, dwelling units and takes it as a whole rather than separate means. With a shift from air and noise polluting inner combustion engines to silent and zero-emission electric cars there is a chance to rethink of how we live in relation to the transportation infrastructures. Electricity powered and autonomous vehicles are introducing new opportuni- ties for living closer to transport infrastructures and looking for more affordable land within the transportation nodes. The shift in the industry of automobility empowers us to use the land that once was doomed clusters of pollution and noise. The transition from inner combustion engines to electric cars opens up new lands for us to build on at the same time, not only putting the open space in use but bringing new opportunities and qualities for the inhabitants of living together with the structures of transportation.

European Capital of Culture.
Year - From 2017, execution in progress Work type - Professional, winning tender in international competition Field - Brand identity and architecture Client - Kaunas 2022, European Capital of Culture Collaborator - Rokas Sutkaitis (Acid Studio) More - www.kaunas2022.eu
At the beginning of 2017, Kaunas was awarded the title of the European Capital of Culture for 2022. Together with various cultural organisations, artists and creatives, project develops a vast, endless and borderless programme that is called the Contemporary Capital. A single brand mark can hardly contain all of Kaunas potential. It’s confusing history and optimistic future requires a truly versatile visual language that is ready to communicate the story of the ever-changing city. Kaunas 2022 is a long programme spanning over 6 years and including all kind of messages. To make sure that the identity stays relevant over the years we made it open. Open to evolution, reinterpretation, and remix, open to different themes and events, open to the community and to the future creators who will shape the iden- tity in their own way. That is why we chose a democratic design which does not put its developers into a strict set of rules but rather stimulates creativity. Kaunas 2022 identity works as an underlying grid that provides the organisers a set of tools to create something unique, yet unified at the same time. Kaunas 2022 - European Capital of Culture organisation as well as brand identity blurs the boundary between the architecture and graphic design, between the brandmark and the user, between the culture and society.

UK Holocaust Memorial
The UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre
Year - 2017 Location - London, United Kingdom Work type - Professional - Invited International Competition Field - Architecture Office - Lahdelma & Mahlamäki architects - www.lma.fi Responsibility - Concept design and schematic analysis
The UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre summarises the Holocaust, the persecution and systematic mass murder against not only the Jews, but also against other minorities, that took place during the Second World War. The scheme, situated next to London’s Houses of Parliament, balances a landscape and a memorial, holding on to the park space that fosters current social identity, but putting deep roots down for the ongoing teaching and learning of the atrocities that took place. The learning centre, tucked below the ground and accessible through a thin slice in the park’s fabric, provides information and evidence as well as a powerful emotional and narrative experience about the era of the Holocaust. The memorial which rises out of a pool of water is a composition of two arcs facing each other. One arc describes the Holocaust; the other describes how it was experienced in the UK. The visitor walks through the arcs – entombed in rusted metal – symbolically along the iron rail tracks. The destination is either a death camp or a train journey across the Channel into the UK. The area between the arcs, which contrastingly is lined with smooth steel surfaces either side of a shallow pool, creates a bare space of tranquility. The rusty or acidified steel sheets in the outer surface of the memorial have on them the symbolic signs of ships and trains and the constant remembrance of home – they all refer to the tragedy of the Holocaust. The structures extending from the memorial down through the ground into the learning centre together to join a subterranean environment of rusted steel and concrete surfaces combine to create one functional, artistic and emotional entity. Above ground, the gentle curved landscaping of the park surface naturally channels the park users toward the memorial and to make the tour through the media installation, and yet the park can remain a park. The substantial learning and gallery spaces below ground provide an ideal location for the history of the Holocaust to live on, and yet the ripples that shape the landscape above ensure to always be a relevant home to visitors and locals – integrating, rather than enforcing, the memorial into the everyday life of Londoners.

Just a Monument
From factory to momument - from monument to factory.
Year - 2018 Location - Ghent, Belgium Work type - Student University - KU Leuven, Brussels, Belgium Tutor - Jonathan Robert Maj
What is a monument to us, how to describe it and what value does it bring in an urban and socio-cultural context in modern society? As we encounter with various artifacts that are highly different in their own scale or bring different historical backgrounds, these are the questions that are crucially important to be analysed in order for us to be able to evaluate relationships and connections with existing or yet to be built monuments. Building analysed is located in Ghent, Belgium - as a remaining part of an old concrete factory “Interbeton”. During the city sprawl, a major part of an old industriall area was turned to housing (as it is visible in a new OMA masterplan that is developed in the area right now). Despite demolishing a major part of industrial buildings, “Interbeton” remained standing still and unused, artifact as the last memory of an industry that was once there. When human and cities are developing in tremendous speed and pace, we are entitled to look for tools to change an old-fashioned understanding of a monument so that urban artifacts would become the chain link that connects and bonds the past and the future thus encompassing our development towards more sustainable and resilient future. As for today, there is a threat for a majority of monuments to become victims of their own monumentality - doomed wastelands of space and materiality.
