Good Lord! Between Memorial Day and all the Pride Celebrations yours truly will be too pooped to party for Flag Day! Sadly some people, especially the younger generation have no idea what prompted the Pride movement. Allow me to enlighten you; Stonewall Union was named after an event in history, the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall riots started in New York City on Christopher Street at the Stonewall bar. The year was 1969, and the day of Judy Garland’s funeral (my Hero) as one of the historians put it “the drag queens were in no mood to play” meaning the mood of the community was somber. Until the day of the start of the riots the police had routinely physically and verbally harassed the men and woman of the gay bars. The men and woman did not resist or object. An example of such harassment would be the police entering the bar and running their night sticks over the buttocks of the patrons, making lude suggestions, or asking lude questions. For whatever reason, one night we fought back. The fighting did not continue during the day but started at sundown each evening for three nights. History has it that a Lesbian struck the first blow (you go girl I’d love to shake your hand), and then the drag queens joined in. The drag queens gained a reputation for being fierce foes during the riots. Rather a paradox to what most people assumed a drag queen to be. As a result of those riots, came the first awareness of the concept of and the need for gay civil rights. let’s find out where in Metraland you can go and show the world WE ARE PROUD!!!! “Ferndale Pride and Dyke March” June 1st and 2nd 12 am. 3rd Annual Street Festival in downtown Ferndale.
