THE LEGEND RETURNS... BY: ABBY NORMAL If you have ever been in a club in the State of Michigan, the City of Detroit or northwest Ohio in the late 70’s to the late 90’s, you’ve probably seen her in some form or fashion. From the stages of “The Escape”, The Gold Dollar”, “The Pink Flamingo”, “Gigi’s”, “Caesars Showbar”, Aruba”, “The Gas Station “, “The Malebox”, “The Metra Picnics”... just to name a few, she was a constant in our nightlife and part of the collective memories of our youth. We are speaking of Detroit’s living legend, icon and drag extraordinaire...LADY T TEMPEST! We sat down and asked her a few questions as she prepares to return to the stage after a long absence!

Why did you retire?

I didn’t retire. I just changed directions. I had felt that I had accomplished all that I ever wanted to as a female impersonator and just wanted some new goals and directions in my life. The endless nights in club after club were all wonderful but I wanted to be able to see some sunlight in my life, instead of sleeping through it.

So what have you been doing with yourself since you chose your new direction? I live as a “woman” and I am a chef by trade. I love it! I have been in a committed relationship for the past 5 years and loving that too. I have my own little house, my work and friends and that’s really all that’s been keeping me busy for all this time. I occasionally go out to the clubs to see old friends or catch a show at Gigi’s. The young kids have no idea who I am. They probably think someone brought their mother to the bar? And then I’m usually home in bed by midnight. How things have changed?

How do you feel about returning to the stage? I’m very excited, but a little nervous and anxious too. I think it’s going to be a blast! Being able to see old friends and feel those rays from the spotlight on my face again. I’ve been preparing... making sure the costumes are just right, going over music Tempest, how long has it been selections...and yes...practicing the famous “drop-squats”! They’re (the drop-squats) since you’ve performed? Well, it’s been about 13 years! The time probably are going to kill me but I’m ready to show them young ones, that the old girl has flown! still has it. 14 Metra Magazine, Issue # 823

What have you missed about performing? I have missed the applause, the fast money (tips) but most of all...the dear friends that I have made over the years. I’m so excited to be a part of the “Gigi’s 40th Year Anniversary celebration”. Gigi’s was and will always be my second home. Everyone there has always been a big part of my life. It’s going to be great to go back and have the weekend of all weekends! I can hardly wait to see all those old faces and relive all those memories. Wouldn’t miss it for the world! Lady “T” Tempest will be performing at the “40th Annual Miss Gigi’s Pageant Weekend” along with all the past Miss Gigi’s title holders ~ Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 18th ~ 20th in Gigi’s Cabaret 16920 W Warren Ave Detroit, Mi. 313584-6525 $10 per evening or ticket packages are available from, Show director, Nickki Stevens at Gigi’s
