oh, hey there Hello lovely friends! Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to read our first ever Jumbled Journal. A few times during this process I thought, “what sort of an idiot would think that this was a good idea!?”...but then I would go back to my original motivation to give more and take less. I really wanted to share with you a collection of all of the things and people that inspire me and I hope you’ll feel inspired too. Every person in this first edition is special to me in some way. Each of them inspire me by continuing to create amazingness, run families and successful businesses whilst remaining the most beautiful of people. I often think that the harder you work, the luckier you become. You will see all of this in our featured stories. I personally feel like the last couple of months have shown me this! We finally came up for air after working harder than ever and purchased our dream block of land just outside of Orange. We have enlisted our great friends at Studio Esteta to help us create our forever home and just last week we were handed the keys to the front gate where we decided to hold a champagne picnic on the hill. Don’t worry – you guys were there in spirit, and we share some snaps within these pages. It is a beautiful and completely exciting season ahead! At Jumbled, we only stock products that we love and we only work with people we adore. Hopefully within these

pages you get a real feeling of the passion we have for our artists, creators and the goodies that they create. So I hope you are inspired...to start that business, to keep up the hustle, to take on that renovation, revamp your bedroom, buy a new pot plant for the bathroom, visit Orange, explore the world or love the shit out of something with all of your heart....LET’S DO THIS! Enjoy!

Pip first met floral designer Aleksandra Schutz at one of her Floral Mastery Classes in Tasmania and later when she did the flowers for a best friend’s wedding. We caught up with Aleks after a glorious shoot with Luisa Brimble to chat all things design, and discovered a young artist who is as sweet as she is clever.

Where did it all start for you? “I’ve always been a nature lover. I grew up on my parent’s wholesale plant nursery in Dural, surrounded by rows and rows of potted flowers and plants. Watching my parents’ relentless work ethic and seeing them create a life for themselves from the soil and their hands subconsciously rubbed off onto me, and slowly those roots took hold on my destiny. 7 years ago, I started my business “Aleksandra”, a boutique floral studio where I create floral compositions and installations for weddings and events.” Tell us about the high and lows of your business. “Being a florist entails long hours, starting in the early hours of the morning sourcing flowers and progressing into long hours working on installations for weddings and events. The end results are beautiful and rewarding but sometimes the effort and persistence is less beautiful and more dogged determination. New opportunities create such a high by being able to work with flowers in new beautiful spaces. It allows me to explore my creativity further and meet new clients and unique briefs. I’m thrilled to be involved again this year with Qualia and the Australian Ballet - ‘pas de deux in paradise’ - which is an exclusive performance held in

September on the beautiful Hamilton Island. I can’t wait!” Your husband is now a part of your business – how do you make that work and how has it changed your business? “Some people *gasp* when they hear the idea of a husband and wife team that work together. When he came on board 4 years ago, it was a huge but wonderful change for both of us. Shannon had to learn about a whole new industry and I had to let go of the reins a little and trust in the new dynamic. I believe it’s most important to have distinct roles when working in a partnership; Shannon manages the back end of the business, helping to make sure the business is profitable, co-ordinating logistics as well as marketing. My role allows me to be focused on our clients, creative direction and flower buying. At the end of the day our marriage is so important to us, we are committed to our work & there is nothing we don’t share with each other. “ How has social media changed your business? “Flowers are so visual, emotive and transient so it’s really been the best tool for us to be able to share our work in real time to tell a lasting story. Instagram is our go-to medium, it allows us educate our followers about


our design processes, the briefs we get to create, our amazing local growers and to show people where the flowers come from. Social media is also a wonderful source of feedback and allows us to be amongst a conversation with a field of creatives.” We love your collab with photographer Luisa Brimble! what was the inspiration and how did it come about? “The collaboration with Luisa came about as a creative project for me to document beautiful flower imagery that offered my version of arranged flowers in their season. It’s nice not to have the pressures of time and to be able to choreograph the flowers for my own pleasure and to my own brief. The Autumn series was inspired by floral prints from Alessandro Michele’s Gucci Garden collection. I loved the use of contrasting colour and I wanted to reinvent my version of the “Garden of Earthly Delights” by creating a still life floral and fruit impression. I wish I could have added some snakes, butterflies, birds and bees!” What does your day look like? “The day in the life of a florist is much more complex that anyone would imagine. A typical event day starts at 4am when I wake up and drive to the Sydney Flower

Markets. You’ll find me with big armfuls of bunches that I’ve sourced and ordered from my favourite growers. The van is quickly loaded and bursting with fresh blooms to play with for the day! The flowers are then either taken directly onsite to a job to be arranged or to our shed to be prepped and conditioned. Our days can be very diverse such as making arrangements, picking up flowers and plants from local farms and nurseries, having regular meetings and site appointments with couples and clients, dismantling and bumping out jobs from the day before, delivering flowers to our corporate and private clients, filling buckets, stripping roses, general flower conditioning and studio maintenance. When I’m not working with the flowers, I’m in my studio office at home writing e-mails & quotes, creating mood boards, sourcing new varieties of vessels and vases and ordering flowers for our next project.” If you weren’t a florist, what would you be? “I find it hard to imagine doing anything else. If I did though, it would have to be something that had an element of creativity involved - be it colour, fragrance or craftsmanship.”

“I grew up in Dungog on a dairy farm as the oldest child of 4. Even back then I loved art. I would sit for hours with my cheap watercolour set of muddled colours and paint landscapes. When I reached 12, I was sent off to boarding school in Sydney. It was hard, I was homesick, but it was the place I fell in love with art. I left school and soon became the copy girl for Cleo Magazine. It was a time when Ita Buttrose was editor and the infamous nude male centerfold was making waves. It was the most interesting place to work as a young girl fresh out of school. Not long after, I was offered both a fashion and art cadetship, but stupidly I refused and instead accepted a scholarship to study teaching. I sometimes look back and regret this decision – I was choosing my head over my heart - but in the end it really didn’t effect who I became. I adored teaching infants and primary. Art was an integral part of learning and I taught it with the greatest amount of passion. I loved the children, particularly the naughty ones or the ones who had really sad lives at home, I wanted to show them an escape in during our art classes. At this time I was living on a farm near Millthorpe (long before it became trendy) with my husband Christopher and two children Pip and Tom. I was teaching a couple of days a week but before long my career

would dart off in a new direction, and not for the last time. When Christopher gave me a sewing machine for Christmas, I went off to TAFE to learn how to sew. I made myself an appliqued dropped waisted dress which was all the rage back then and that was it. Everyone else wanted one too. I began sewing on my own but went on to hire 28 sewers who worked from their homes whilst I drove the station wagon, complete with two kids and lots of garments, around the countryside. I would pick up, deliver, design, complete book-work and do the marketing myself. My brand was stocked in 15 boutiques and life was very busy. Christopher always pushed me to take the next step and we eventually purchased an old cottage in the CBD of Orange that would become my store. Unfortunately Christopher died suddenly and that changed everything. I started selling other people’s brands as well as my own and I was able to build a successful retail store, Kezz Brett: Clothes For Gorgeous Women. I spent 30 fabulous years in the fashion and design business. It was tough going on my own, but I made it work. I decided to retire three years ago and I have not looked back. I spend my days painting, playing golf and looking after grandchildren. I have also found myself a new partner, Philip Shaw (a fabulous Orange


winemaker - so that ticks another of my boxes) and we travel a lot. My art gives me so much joy. Time flies while I am painting away in my studio. I am very lucky to live in Orange as we are surrounded by such beauty that I can draw upon as inspiration for my paintings. I love to paint clouds and let the paint dribble down the canvas. I adore colour. The more the better. I like to think of myself as a failed minimalist. My daughter Pip, owner of Jumbled, has been such a huge supporter of my work. I love the way that she styles up my art in The Sonic. Her thriving business and social media community have been game changing for my work, even though technology is not one of my life skills. I get such a buzz out of seeing my work in people’s homes and meeting the people who love what I do. Life is good. I am happy and I hope that comes across in my work.�

If you’ve become obsessed with raising happy, healthy plants, you’re not alone. Not only does bringing the outdoors in benefit our health, it can also instantly add colour, freshness and calm to our homes. And for those with the blackest of green thumbs, the good news is, there’s even a plant or two for you!

We list our top five tips to ensure your plants remain lush and content, all year round.

Use large plants to make a statement in your home. Fiddle Leaf Figs and Snake plants can add height and interest. Place them near a window, and be sure not to overwater them. Bunnings has an amazing soil moisture reader for $12 - the best investment you’ll make this spring! Your kitchen window is the perfect spot to grow some pretty and delicious herbs. Sage, Basil, Mint and Thyme all grow in water, so pop them in a vase and not only will they look fresh and green in your space, you’ll always have the ingredients on hand when you need them! Don’t forget the bathroom, which can often be one of the best locations for your indoor plant! Any bright, sun-drenched bathroom with at least one large window is ideal for almost any plant, but there are plenty of varieties that will live comfortably in low-light environments as well. Try a Devil’s Ivy hanging from a high shelf or the ceiling for a beautiful cascading option. Use a spray bottle to mist your plants regularly. It helps to keep leaves clean and fresh, and it’s a good way to provide moisture to cuttings that are slowly developing new roots. Use soft water (water low in minerals) when misting, and make sure it’s no cooler than room temperature. Are you a serial (plant) killer? The hardiest plants - and the hardest to kill - include MotherIn-Law’s Tongue, Iron Plant, Rubber Plant, Jade Plant, Philodendron and succulents. These plants thrive on neglect and even when you think you’ve well and truly killed them, trim back the leaves (you may be left with nothing but soil), and watch them grow back through the ashes!

“From the second we saw the view on this block in Orange, NSW, we knew we had to have it. And what better way to celebrate our purchase than with a champagne picnic on the hill with our favourite people! We are working with our clever friends at Studio Esteta to design our dream home and make the most of the glorious views over Spring Creek Dam up to Mount Canobolas. The design will be modern, simple, practical and homely with plenty of natural light and our aim is to insert it into the surrounding landscape seamlessly, nestled into the existing contours of the hill. We have cattle arriving next week and honestly just can’t wait to bring our boys up here. Luckily my husband, Nick, is a builder so we will be keeping you posted throughout the journey!” Pip xx

studio estetA Felicity and Sarah from Studio Esteta are a dream design team. As an old school friend PIP haS always dreamt of working with Felicity, so when their incredibly successful concept for The SONIC was executed to perfection, it was a no brainer to enlist their help for Pip’s dream home. We chat with Felicity about why working with an architect will be the best decision you make. PHOTOgraphy TOM BLATCHFORD

Introduce yourselves and what role each of you take in the business?

HOW DID STUDIO ESTETA COME TO FRUITION?

“I completed a Master’s Degree of Architecture at Sydney University and am a registered architect in both Victoria and NSW. Sarah completed an Honours Degree of a Bachelor of Interior Architecture at Monash University.

“As individual designers, we both aspired to one day start our own design studio. We’ve both always had a strong and broad passion for architecture and design, and hoped to one day put our names to the hard work and dedication we’ve had for our profession. With many shared values, both on a personal and professional level, and a design aesthetic that aligned, our skillsets were and continue to be complimentary.

Being in a partnership, we strive for a collaborative approach between us and for our studio. We approach the initial phases of our projects together, in particular client briefings and workshops as well as our own internal workshops. This provides us with the opportunity to determine projects roles and objectives as well as strong conceptual and design ideas before evenly splitting the projects to completion. Between us both, we have equally delegated the administrative and marketing tasks that are critical for a small business, including business development, forecasting, resourcing, marketing etc. This assists us to both equally be across and prioritise the creative side of our projects.”

Whilst working as colleagues at Clare Cousins Architects we developed a strong friendship and working relationship and it was at a later stage in our careers that our paths crossed and the opportunity arose for us to join forces, and Studio Esteta was born. Forming a partnership, and building a small practice has had its challenges, but being on this journey together, has made it feel anything but daunting.”




tell us about the highs and lows of running your own small business? “We’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on a variety of sectors and scales quite early on in our development as a studio, all presenting unique opportunities and qualities in terms of the design brief, existing conditions and site context. Recognition from our industry and peers, in the form of awards or an article, is always positive and encouraging. A challenge is often finding ourselves having to justify the value of design and the worth of investing in design services. We, as designers, must not lose track or lessen the practice of design fundamentals, such as end user functionality, designing within context and urban fabric, sustainability, longevity and the phenomenological aspects of design.” FELICITY, You have recently just had a baby. how have you both managed that juggle? “From the outset forming a partnership made sense to us, as we knew that being women who aspire to juggle both our profession and a young family may be a difficult task. We kept the lines of communication clear and open throughout the lead-up to the arrival of my daughter Peggy, not just within the office, but with our Clients too. A lot of the success of this juggle came down to the dedication and understanding of Sarah and our studio during this time, as well as their accommodation of me returning to work part time whilst Peggy was still young.” What are the benefits of having an architect or designer? “The process of designing and constructing an architectural or interior project can often be complex and time consuming. There are

so many elements that need to be considered so an Architect/Designer’s role is to help the Client through the process, from developing their brief into a resolved design and ensuring this design is executed to a high level of quality, finish and as documented during the construction phase. As Architects and designers we also consider every project in a holistic manner to ensure that everything works harmoniously together and our designs are contextually responsive. We create environments that are enjoyable to be in, that are socially and environmentally responsible and functional for the end user, and seek to be timeless.” How would someone find an architect/ designer that IS best suited them and their project? “Firstly, it is helpful to think carefully about your project scope, your needs and requirements, and your wish list! Putting together a list of potential architects/ designers that could be suited to your style and the nature of your project would be the next step. Thinking about studios whose aesthetic and values align, or those that have worked on projects in your community or for friends or family is essential. Once you have come to a refined list of studios, make contact with your preferred choice either through calling or emailing. A phone conversation is always most productive and what we (on the other side) respond best to. Requesting a portfolio of their work is also helpful if they don’t have a website or media platform you can refer to. It is highly beneficial and integral to meet with the architect/ designer to discuss your project, the scope, timing etc. This provides the opportunity to gauge the personality of the studio and its key people to assist in your decision-making. It is a long process, so the time invested in this early stage is highly beneficial!”



MERRiCK’S GUESTHOUSE The Studio Esteta team selected a palette of smoked oak timber boards, veneers and dark bronze accents to create a tangible connection to the landscape whilst the rustic quality of the materials are sensitively balanced with refined sophistication, creating clean lines and a light filled interior. The final design solution is a testament to clever, considered and practical ideas that are sympathetic to the site context and successfully achieve the clients brief to create a simple, functional and beautiful guest house.

KiP & co It was a tiny stand at Life Instyle in 2012 where we first discovered homewares brand Kip & Co, and it’s creators Alex, Kate and Hayley. SIX years on, we chat with Kate and unveil the first sneak peek of their new collection ‘in full bloom’. PHOTOgraphy Nikole Ramsay stylist Amber Lenette

How does each collection come to be? Can you describe the process? “We start off the design process by brainstorming a heap of ideas and sharing the inspiration we’ve each gathered. The result is usually a pretty good foundation for the feel and vibe of the collection and a handful of prints to put into development. We brief either our in-house graphic designer Sarah or one of two designers we’ve used since the day Kip started and they set about drawing these up for us. Each range has about 20 new prints so we continue this design process so that we nail about 2-3 prints per week for the next two months. Once all prints are done we piece together the range and get rolling on strikeoffs, then samples in time for a photoshoot. We mainly work all together on Mondays so this is our ‘design day’ each week. This is the one component of the business which we all contribute whole heartedly too and love.”

The three of you seem like such good friends! How did you find yourself working together in the beginning? “We genuinely are all best friends. Hayley and I are sisters which is how we ended up working together and Alex was one of my University besties. It’s a bit of a blur now but Alex and I were talking about starting a little business and then Hayley was keen to jump on in. And thank god she did as she’s our social media wizard and also manages and plans each of our shoots. Alex manages all the freight and logistics for Kip, is our legal beagle, and is spearheading the USA venture which keeps her on her toes as this has proven really different and much harder than we had hoped. And I am the number cruncher, EDM creator and production manager. We then all design for Kip. We work closely together on most facets of the business ensuring our signature is on everything we do and have an amazing


team that helps us keep things ticking and understands the brand and loves it.” your photoshoots are always so inspirational, how do you keep it fresh every season? “In some ways the shoots get easier but in terms of maintaining an aspirational aesthetic that is special and unique each time, it is getting harder and harder. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to get these shoots looking really cool and inspired. We are always on the lookout for inspiring shoot locations. We usually fling a last minute mood board together for our shoots but Hayley and I get a clear vision together and then we just creatively direct the whole day and it seems to come together as we envisaged.”

working on the weekends though so that my family get me 100%. We are all very lucky with our choice of husbands. Not only are they super cuties but they are all very hands on dads. So that is probably my #1 tip for a work/ life balance - have a supportive amazing partner to enjoy the adventure with, and help manage your load.” What’s been your greatest success? “For me it is having this business run alongside having my 3 boys, and a really great lifestyle. I feel so lucky that I can have a job I love and still be there for my kids and husband. And I always dreamt of doing lots of travel with work and family and there is certainly an abundance of that.”

You all have little families, how do you manage the workload?

What’s your greatest piece of business advice?

“We do. All of us. I have 3 boys under 7 and every day is a juggle but honestly, it’s not too bad. The hardest bit is managing travel for shoots, tradefairs and supplier visits with a breastfeeding baby. It’s meant I’ve had to sit out a few overseas trips, but I look forward to getting back to that after Viv turns 1 and I wind up the feeding. I really try to stop

“It would be to not take it all too seriously. Work is one element of your life and it is important to keep that in perspective. I was also once told to not worry about things that are out of your control and I live my life (work and family life) with this in mind.”

SAGE x CLARE If you’ve found yourself squirrelling away every spare penny to buy every item in the new Sage & Clare collection, you’ll find yourself in good company. We chat with founder Phoebe about her inspiration, and why India has stolen her heart. PHOTOgraphy Armelle Habib .. stylist Julia Green & Noel Coughlan AsSisted by Alison Lewis

why did you start Sage X Clare? “After landing what I thought was my dream job, I was actually really unhappy in it and knew something had to change. We booked a spontaneous trip to India over Christmas and it was there that we hatched a plan to open a homewares business, Sage x Clare. Within two months of returning I quit my job, used a small amount of savings we had set aside for travel and flew back over to India to get started. It has always been about celebrating artisanal pieces with colour and this still remains at the heart of our brand.” What is the inspiration behind this range? “Travel is often the starting point for any range and our Rumah Collection is no different. A trip to Bali last year and some

wonderful stays at inspiring villas was where it began. From there, we used vintage Batik and indigenous fabric design as the foundation, giving it a contemporary Sage x Clare twist! It embodies that amazing tropical Summer spirit… now we just need the weather to follow suit.” Your campaign shoot (and those marigolds) in Bali is spellbinding, how did you bring it together? “Julia Green from Greenhouse Interiors and I put our heads together and decided Villa Wahah in Seminyak was the perfect shoot location. Lots of concepting by my team went into the shoot and the marigolds were a key element. Shooting in Bali was fabulous because the flowers and the tropical fruits and foliage were available in abundance. We brought in kilos and kilos of flowers!”


Tell us a bit more about the Nudie Rudie bathmat... “I cannot believe the success of this bathmat, it stuns me every single day! We cannot get enough of them - not even one of my team has one because they’re already sold out by the time they arrive! I have my son to thank for the idea - his name is Jude so “Nudie Judie” and “Judie Rudie” are common words in our house. I love that we can help bring some fun to bathrooms around the country and beyond.” You get your goodies made in India, how did you start doing this? “India has always been the place we’ve produced. The craftsmanship and artisanal skills are amazing, not to mention the colour. There is an amazing synergy with what they can do and what we design and produce. I love travelling there for work and it’s a place full of opportunity and flexibility. No matter how crazy our designs are, there are always artisans ready to accept the challenge and spend months working through how to do it. I love that and it’s in stark contrast to other high-volume producers in China for instance. Of course, there are plenty of challenges to producing in India…nothing happens in a hurry. It’s taken me years to learn that no amount of organisation on my end is ever going to change that! I carry around a permanent feeling of guilt - guilt that I’m not doing a better job as a Mum, guilt that I’m not doing a better job at Sage x Clare. I have a wonderful community of friends and family who help me, thank goodness. But my mind is rarely rested - I’d like to say I start my day with meditation, a cup of hot lemon water followed by an hour of journaling. But in reality, I’m up at 6.30am getting Jude ready for the day, followed by Instagram and emails before racing to work, leaving in a hurry to pick Jude up at 4.30 (I’m that Mum that’s always late) and then back to Sage x Clare work in the evenings once he’s in bed. It’s never quiet, I rarely feel in control, but I kinda love it…” What is your fave colour combo at the moment? “I think I’ve been gripped by the Tobacco bug like the rest of us. Loving all forms of this earthy colour, along with moss and terracotta.” Are you already working on the next range? “We sure are! Just wrapping it up now… It’s inspired by the desert and that’s all I can say!”

Everything in Morocco is GOOD - how else do you sum up the trip of a lifetime? Preparing for the trip, I was super confident in crushing everyone else’s nerves. I had an answer for every niggly question and I was totally ready to hit the souks running! Inside though, I had no idea what I was doing! I’ve barely travelled and I was rooming with a self confessed snorer, so who knows if I was going to get any sleep at all! Looking back now, I can’t believe I was so nervous! A few warm hugs from girls I had only ever emailed (and some champagnes later) and we walked onto our flight already feeling like best friends. Isn’t it funny how you travel with a group of

girls and instantly you know each other’s deepest secrets? I felt bad for our driver Hamza as it was like a rolling hen’s party, the entire week! Morocco itself completely blew my mind! The colours, the smells, the people... I just couldn’t take it all in fast enough! It was as if Instagram had come to life and I really settled into the routine of eat-shop-winerepeat. Initially it was a total shopping frenzy so getting to the camp in the desert was a total highlight! Slowing down to have wine around the camp fire - it was pure bliss! The flight home came around in the blink of an eye and I’m itching to get back and explore it all again! Until next time Morocco...

I totally adore Orange and I would love for you to come and visit us. I thought that I would make it super easy for you and create an itinerary of sorts. FRIDAY NIGHT: After your road trip, settle in at Nashdale Lane Wine’s luxury glamping cabins set amongst the beautiful vineyard. Watch the sun go down and enjoy some fresh local produce and their super fine wine varieties by the authentic wood fire and be dazzled as the night sky reveals itself. SATURDAY MORNING: Take a stroll around the vineyard and meet the locals - kangaroos. Chat with the owners of the idyllic vineyard, Nick and Tanya. They are super passionate about their wines and have a great respect for the land. Head into town for breaky and a coffee hit from one of our town’s fabulous cafes. Our top picks are – Nimrod’s (within The Sonic), Good Eddy, Byng Street and Groundstone. If you’re lucky enough to be in Orange on the second Saturday OR the fourth Sunday of every month, you’re in for a treat with

the Orange Farmers Markets. More than 60 stallholders arrive each month with freshly picked, locally grown and handcrafted produce for you to enjoy. You can meet the makers and learn more about your food and even pick up some tips on cooking, storage and the various ways to use the product. After that, a visit to The Sonic is a must (of course)! Here you’ll find all the goodies Jumbled has to offer, as well as our sister-store Iglou for all of the best women’s fashion and accessories. The aforementioned Nimrod’s café sits proudly amongst our homewares and is the perfect spot to grab a sweet treat and take in all the goodness. Your lunch options are endless so if it’s fine dining you’re after, treat yourself to Racine Restaurant. If you’re craving something a little more relaxed and trendy, our picks are The Union Bank or The Agrestic Grocer. Orange is well known for its cool climate wines and has some amazing cellar doors that you can visit. Check out Philip Shaw, De Salis Wines or Heifer Station Cellar Door.




Enjoy a cheese platter and some vino at Heifer Station while the kids are occupied at the onsite petting zoo. The Orange Wine Festival is taking place from 12-21 October 2018 and there are some brilliant events that are taking place. Finish your perfect Saturday with dinner at my favourite restaurant, Sweet Sour Salt. Its delicious modern Asian cuisine and unique décor make it a must in our book! SUNDAY: Book into brunch at The Old Convent and I promise you will not be disappointed. It’s only open on Sundays and bookings are essential. As the name suggests, it was formerly a convent full of nuns. The nuns have all gone, but the beautiful building that is nestled in the hills just outside of Orange at Borenore remains. Not only is the setting exceptional, it offers probably the best-brunch-of-all-time. As you head back into town stop in at Hillside Harvest where you can pick your

own fruit; apples, cherries, plums...whatever is in season! The cherry season in Orange is super popular in December and they are already taking bookings for groups of 20 so RUN...don’t walk! On your way out, explore the historic village of Millthorpe (15 minutes drive from Orange). Grab a bite to eat and explore the shops. Our favourite go-to is Tonic Restaurant. Established in 2003 by owners Tony and Nicole Worland, the Tonic menu has a seasonal focus and showcases the best from local producers such as Mandagery Creek Venison and Cowra Lamb. Over the last eleven years the restaurant has regularly been awarded a chef’s hat by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. As you head off home, I hope your trip to Orange is everything you hoped for and more. We really are so lucky to live here, and know you will love every minute of your time spent in our little country town. Pip xx

blOod orAnges PHOTOgraphy + RECIPE SOPHIE HANSEN

Almond cakes are the best kind; they’re rich in flavour and stay moist for ages. Throw some tangy blood orange and bitter dark chocolate into the mix and you have one great cake on/in your hands. The idea for this recipe came from a sticky orange and vanilla upside-down cake in Donna Hay’s Seasons book. I’ve tweaked it a little, added the chocolate etc, but the basic concept is the same. Thanks Donna!

Also, if you have enough ingredients; I’d double this recipe. It’s no extra bother really to make two, and one of these loaves, wrapped in baking paper and tied with string, makes a great impromptu gift for that friend who helped you out last week or just someone who might need a kind gesture to lift their mood. The recipe below makes one loaf.


INGREDIENTS 4 eggs 1 cup caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup plain flour (I like using wholemeal, you could also go for spelt) 1 tsp baking powder 150g melted butter 1 cup almond meal (it’s great if you can make your own meal using fresh, natural almonds – the flavour will be loads more intense than if you use ready-processed almond meal. Just tip a cup of almonds into your blender or food processor and blitz) 3/4 cup best quality dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces For the topping 1 cup caster sugar 1/2 cup water 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 blood (or other) oranges, very thinly sliced METHOD Preheat oven to 160C and grease either a 24cm cake tin or a large loaf tin (mine is 20cmx12cm). For the topping; combine the sugar, water and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the orange slices and simmer for about 15 minutes or until they are completely soft. Arrange the slices on the base of your loaf or cake tin and then pour in the syrup. For the cake batter; combine the eggs, sugar and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer and whisk for 10 minutes, or until the mixture is pale and trippled in volume. Fold in the flour and baking powder. Then gently fold in the butter, almond meal and dark chocolate. Spoon batter into the cake or loaf tin, smooth over the top and bake for 45 minutes or until cooked through. Let rest for about 5 minutes then turn out onto a platter (to catch all that yummy syrup) and serve. For more delicious recipes, visit www.local-lovely.com
