Will You Be Voting? BY MAKEIDA ANTONIO My colleagues Kamalie Mannix, Malaica Joseph and I were on Observer Radio’s Voice of the People on February 26 to speak on how young people will be affected by the 2018 General Elections. The issues that I would like to discuss in greater detail surround why people are so vocal about their disinterest in voting. Firstly, I would like to have an objective conversation, but it is difficult to do so when current statistics are not easily accessible. Yes, I took to Google! I searched “Antigua statistics 2017”. All I saw were figures indicating our performance in the tourism sector. It’s not a bad thing at all, I just wish that I was able to get figures together, so I can back up my chat with evidence. The most recent set of stats I was able to find on the Antigua and Barbuda’s Government Information and Services page were tourism figures from 2013. Nothing that reflects the amount of work that has been done in the various sectors by the current administration since 2014. Political parties become excited when they see people flock to their events, but how many people in that crowd will vote? How many people in that crowd are aware of the Bills that have been passed in Parliament? How many of them are aware of the process of drafting a Bill and debating said Bill in both the Lower and Upper Houses? How many understand the ways in which that Bill will affect their lives? These are the things to explain on the campaign trail, not what one party did and did not do. I was informed that the Electoral Commission closed off registration since January 31, 2018. A listener sent a WhatsApp saying that elections happen all the time and when each of us turns 18, it is our duty to become registered to vote. I do not disagree. However, I received PAGE 04 JUMP MAGAZINE a personal message while I was on air

asking to speak about the disappointment of those turning 18 years old this year. They will have to wait another 4-5 years to have a say in their future. I am not making excuses for those who are not registered. I am simply facilitating a dialogue on the implications of this situation. Look at another aspect of it. Kamalie noted that a lot of young people’s opinions of the political parties are molded by their parents. When I was outside of one political meeting, I heard a little girl asking her mother who she’s voting for and her mother said,

“Who? Me nah vote!” If the parents are not voting, the young people will clearly not see the importance of voting. I made a statement on air and I stand by it. Young people need to take more responsibility and keep up to date with current affairs. Regardless to if you think the news is slanted to favour a certain party, it is your duty as a citizen to inform yourself because there are so many radio stations which carry news packages, so many local and regional news resources online. I am honestly not interested in who you are voting for because it is not my place to persuade anybody. But, I want you to ask yourself why you will be voting. Are you voting for an increase in the standard of healthcare? Are you voting for good governance? Are you voting for more job/ education opportunities? See, I don’t think people feel as though their vote matters and I am here to tell you that it does. Simply being aware of current affairs can help you to choose the best candidate and as soon as registrations reopen, don’t let another election catch you off-guard. My name is Makeida Antonio. Harry Belafonte (born March 1, 1927), known as one of the most successful Jamaican-American pop stars in history, was dubbed the “King of Calypso” for popularizing the Caribbean musical style (originating in Trinidad & Tobago) with an international audience in the 1950s. His breakthrough album Calypso (1956) is the first million-selling LP by a single artist. Belafonte is perhaps best known for singing “The Banana Boat Song”, with its signature lyric “Day-O”. He has recorded in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel, show tunes, and American standards. Exclusive JEANILLE BONTERRE EJ: First of all, I want to know personally, why do they call you ChronDada? C: Well ChronDadda is a name where, I don’t really remember where it comes from. I think Ruinkus, either Ruinkus or Jesse Royal called me first. It has to be one of them two individuals. EJ: What does Dadda mean? Why add Dada. C: I think Dadda in Swahili means “sistah”. So all them people name sistah. But in Jamaican it means Father. Yea, in Jamaica you know you call everybody Dada. So if you’re great like Sizzla Kalonja, you’re the original DonDadda, so ChronDadda. EJ: Wow. That’s quite funny actually. So let’s talk about your lyrical content. I’ve been listening to your music for years. It’s uplifted me and strengthened me when I needed it and helps with meditation on life, but you’re young with an old soul. Where does that lyrical flow, lyrical content come from, when you’re able to be so positive? C: Everything in life is music ya know. When music overcomes you, it’s now left to what you feel yourself, and how able you are to physically channel this music. How is your lungs, how is your heart, how is your mind… All of that comes out in the lyrics. Like what are you thinking?

For someone to go into a studio and sing about killing, they have to be meditating about killing someone else, this and that. EJ: But your songs are all about love and righteousness, so what were you meditating about at the time? C: Even for the most vicious murderer in the world, for him to get up one morning and sign about the beauty of life and the beauty of living, he would have to meditate about the beauty of life and the beauty of living. Yes, some people complicate the process with trying to use their intellect to have a better sleep in the night, but as an artist you are the music that you make. EJ: See that is powerful. We never think that we are a part of the music we make. C: Yea, we are the music. Yea man! We are the music. EJ: So music is emotional. Should artist feel inclined to put their feelings in their music? C: Well you can only feel music ya know. You can’t see it. You never see a song walking past you like that. You can only feel it. EJ: The key then, is for talent to be in a healthy state of mind. C: Yea man. For an artist, health is different thing. Mental health is a different situation, because it takes a different mentality for you to be an artist, you have to think differently from someone who is just a builder. You know, the architect is different from the mason, the carpenter, the builder they all think different. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO FULL INTERVIEW!

EJ: So when we hear lyrics with negative and dark energies around it, what do you think a young person or artist is feeling at that time? C: Well you have to meditate negativity to sing it. Whatever you sing, you have to meditate it. You have to get your lungs, your vocal chords, a lot of strings and organs in your body Click here to out. In order for working to get those lyrics that to happen itlisten takes a certain meditation of the mind.

DIY HEALTH

FROM THE INSIDE OUT: KOMBUCHA BY SERWA ALISA THOMAS Now that we are formally introduced from my last month’s article on the Intro to DIY Health, I am here again to share with you my latest crave that I swear by when it comes to the improvement of my gut health over the past weeks. This miracle drink is known as Kombucha [Kom-Boo-Cha]. It is a highly concentrated Probiotic fermented drink. It is made primarily with the help of a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) or otherwise known as ‘Tea Mushroom’ or ‘The Mother ‘; which can be purchased from places such as Amazon.com, EBay.com or grown in your very own home. It is grown from a mixture of ‘ONLY’ start up culture which in fact is just a small amount of store bought Kombucha, raw or organic cane sugar, Green Tea or Black Tea and water stored inside a glass jar with an air tight lid to assist in preventing any molding or insect invasions of any kind. I mean who wants a batch of moldy, insect-filled Tea? Yuck! And yes! It’s that easy. Well maybe, because it still requires observation and proper sanitation in ensuring a healthy SCOBY for Kombucha making. The SCOBY can also be used in the making of many other fermented drinks. It takes patience and for some; a strong stomach due to its appearance, but can be one of the best startup DIY Health projects and start to your journey on the way to a healthy you. The actual Kombucha Tea is also made using the same ingredients that were used in making the SCOBY but takes a shorter time to ferment PAGE 16 JUMP MAGAZINE

due to the presence of the now fresh and healthy grown gut friendly organism. It takes up to 2-4 weeks for a batch of Kombucha to be made and can help with so many issues which I have personally experienced and have seen thousands of times in Reviews and Online studies which I will list for you here: 1. Improved Digestion and helps with irregularity 2. Reboots the Immune System 3. Clears Breakouts and Skin Flares 4. Aids in Weight Loss 5. Detoxes the Intestines and Body 6. Energy Enhancer 7. Mood Enhancer for those dreary days 8. Aids in the PH correction in the Body and Yeast balance within the Gut Kombucha has so much to offer and comes with much more benefits outside of what was listed and was popular throughout the years as far back as 2000 years ago. Studies have shown that this incredible drink dates back to the region of China; which we all know happens to be one of the first civilizations to come across the use of many ingredients, roots, hers, etc. and the incredible health benefits behind the making and consumption of this magical brew. It is known that it has become a big trend especially in the U.S. and a popular DIY for YouTube bloggers alike who have been making, drinking and photographing every brand and flavor of Kombucha in existence. It may come across as another one of those annoying fads that everyone starts because the celebrities are doing it but please trust me when I say that besides the vinegary smell and the acquired taste to some; it is AMAZING! And it WORKS!

REST DAY! DO YOU REALLY NEED REST?

WITH O’JAY HARRIS BODY BY O’JAY CERTIFIED NUTRITION SPECIALIST, CERTIFIED PERSONAL & GROUP INSTRUCTOR

“REMEMBER! MUSCLES ARE TORN IN THE GYM, FED IN THE KITCHEN AND BUILT IN THE BED!” RECOVERY

I really wanted to workout today, but my body said no! According to Rice University, “Overtraining can best be defined as the state where the athlete has been repeatedly stressed by training to the point where rest is no longer adequate to allow for recovery.” Persistent muscle soreness, getting sick more often, or frequent injuries are all physical symptoms of overtraining. Fortunately, recovery is simple — just take it easy for a few days! Muscle growth begins the moment you step out of the gym, and that growth happens while you rest. Muscles don’t grow in the gym; they grow after. When you lift heavy, the muscle fibres are torn up and right after you lift, your body begins repairing itself with adequate rest or nutrition. Rest will boost your immune system and help you live longer Experts agree that it’s essential to get enough sleep -- ideally 7 to 9 hours -- because proper rest helps the body repair injuries caused by stress, illness and invading organisms such as viruses. “If you sleep better, you can certainly live better and longer.” PAGE 18 JUMP MAGAZINE Weight loss

When dieting, you might want to get to bed earlier. Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat than those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass. Your body torches calories as you sleep and even like you’re working out.

Make the most out of your rest days I refuse to spend my rest day in bed thinking about the gym. It’s better to instead use this time to stretch, foam roll and go to the beach to soak! In allowing and promoting recovery, you will become stronger, more powerful, and gain an increase in your performance. Without recovery time, training can weaken the strongest athletes. It is recommended to take a break from lifting at least twice per week. Do You Really Need Rest? The answer is YES!

Bitez An evening at South Point, English Harbour, Antigua

By Dr. Petra Miller

Nestled on the south coast of Antigua, South Point’s restaurant is an elegant day or night experience, set in the picturesque English Harbour. South Point is a dynamic mixture of a luxury lounge and an elegant fine dining restaurant. The doors are open seven days per week and boasting live band entertainment twice per week, it is the perfect place for drinks on the deck followed by an exciting dinner. The Jump268 crew was met with a fresh raspberry muddle and an electric basil lemonade. The cocktail menu is seasonal, refreshing, and filled with fresh flavour.

The staff and service was beyond compare, the atmosphere was relaxed, yet sophisticated and the evening was completed with a decadent desert of handmade fried ravioli , stuffed with dark chocolate an deep fried served with a heavenly sprinkling of powdered sugar. The South Point espresso martini was a smooth and silky cocktail that sealed the perfect ending to an exquisite evening. This place is a must see, must experience and must go again and again. The view of sitting on the water’s edge as the sun sets and the twinkling lights of the boats fill the harbour is breath taking. The environment is a compliment to the impeccable bar and restaurant. So fly, drive or run to South Point on your next special occasion or trip to Antigua. The experience awaits you.

The menu is an extensive mixture of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine featuring classics which invite your senses on a journey of amazement. There is a full sushi bar with an artistic Japanese Itamae who puts a modern spin on sushi classics; the tuna tartar is served with an avocado mousse and fresh pomegranate on top which was bursting with flavour! The sushi platter features fresh local tuna sashimi presented as the petals of a rose accompanied by streaky sake salmon, yellow tail, sweet ebi prawns and classic fresh rolls. One amazing and unique South Point dish is the passion fruit and yellow tail sashimi, a Caribbean twist on perfectly thin sliced fresh sashimi, dripping with fresh passion fruit juice. This side of South Point is worth the trip! The entrée menu boasts international delights, featuring simple classics to intricately prepared suppers. We sampled the Australian Rack of Lamb surmounted on drizzles of a red wine reduction, served with perfectly grilled asparagus and vitelotte purple potatoes. Cutting into the perfectly medium-cooked lamb was like butter, and each side component had its own twist of flavour bursting with fresh herbs, all together creating a symphony with each and every bite. The dinner experience was both a feast for the eyes and the senses. PAGE 20 JUMP MAGAZINE

Video games aren’t just great for having fun by yourself or with others, but also can be used in rehabilitation. Physical therapy is an excellent example; particularly individuals who need to work on getting themselves back to a fully functional state where they can do things from themselves. Video games are literally built around hand-eye coordination which helps to speed up the rehabilitation process.

Video games also encourage people to work together. Everyone has a goal that needs to be accomplished, and this goal is easier through teamwork. This practice of teamwork can easily transfer into the “real world”, specifically in the work place.

JUMP268: Tell us about your background and where you grew up, etc. BAYROC: I grew up in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI), right near the beach, went the school in the BVI until college where I studied a little architecture and design in the United States. I’m 29 years old. JUMP268: When and how was your interest in fashion sparked? BAYROC: I started BayRoc in late 2007 but it wasn’t until maybe 2012 when I meet Kristin Frazier (Trefle Swimwear Designer from the British Virgin Islands, with pieces worn by the likes of Beyoncé and Chrisette Michelle) that I decided to get deeper into fashion. I learned a lot and it helped me to shape and mold BayRoc more. So my first Fashion show was with LisaRaye (American actress, model, businesswoman and fashion designer), then I went on to do Summer Sizzle (The ultimate annual Fashion Event in the BVI), etc; each year learning and improving a little more and it turned into a passion. JUMP268: How would you describe your designs? BAYROC: Clean and vibrant, loud, canvas worthy abstract work, lots of color combinations and shapes, a lot of influence from graffiti and digital illustrations, music, culture, etc. JUMP268: BayRoc......break it down. BAYROC: “Bay” is from Cane Garden Bay where I grew up and “Roc” just gives it a nice sound because I tried different names like baywear, and bayfashion but I stuck with BayRoc...even though not many people liked the name at first. BayRoc, the name and the logo is a symbol for those that stand out and who make their own path in life,he bold artist, PAGE 36 JUMP MAGAZINE

JUMP268: Did you experience hurricane Irma and if so were you able to extract anything into your work? BAYROC: Hurricane Irma put a lot of things in perspective for me but nothing really reflected in my artwork, at least not yet, but creativity can be funny like that; the things you experience now may not reflect in your work until months or years later so who knows, it will all flow. JUMP268: Where have your designs hit the runway/editorial, etc? BAYROC: A small show in St. John, US Virgin Islands was my first one, with LisaRaye, then I did Summer Sizzle after that I think. It was 2012. Then I opened for Caribbean Fashion week in Jamaica which landed me in some blogs, and I returned to do Summer Sizzle again in 2013. I went on to be featured in a small show in San Antonio, Texas and then I went on to San Diego Fashion week in California. Never been featured in a Magazine though so much love to Jump268 for having me! JUMP268: You’re now in Spain....Tell us about what inspired the move and what we can look forward to? BAYROC: I just wanted more for myself, but really I went to Spain about a year ago for 3 months and loved the place; HUGE art scene, HUGE fashion scene - 2 things that I constantly yearn to be around. Plus, I’m very ambitions about taking my line to the next level and beyond the resources and outlets will make for incredible productivity. The fact that I’m even out here in Barcelona alone says that loudly. There’s a lot of inspiring works of art and fashion out here in Europe that I know will influence me to take my craft to new heights; so you can look forwards to a more established line, refined and detailed works of art and a wider and diverse Click here to variety of clothing that will all be available at listen www.bayrocstyles.com, worldwide.

Every year the St. Joseph’s Academy High School hosts a Career Day where third form students are given an opportunity to dress in the attire of their future careers and to hear from a few Professionals as they present on their fields of work.

Speaking exclusively with Jump268, Mr. Rhudd expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to present at his alma mater. He personally wished to thank his former teacher Mr. Ellis Southwell and the Principal, Mr. Rudolph Davis. He ended by encouraging other past students to continue to guide and invest in the youth, as it is the only way to effect meaningful change in the Country.

The Program was designed to guide the students just before they begin preparations for CXC examinations in 4th Form where they would have to choose courses which would steer them towards their career choice. This year on March 15, Mr. Jermaine Rhudd aka ‘Selecta J’ had the pleasure of leading the presentations in the field of Law. Mr. Rhudd, also the youngest sitting member on the School’s Board of Directors, had an opportunity to give to the young minds his personal perspective on pursuing a career as a Lawyer in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Third Form Students with Attorney At Law, Jermaine Rhudd

While covering the basic responsibilities of Lawyers, Mr. Rhudd used the opportunity to advise students on the most suitable courses to choose, the various career choices that Lawyers can pursue as well as some of the challenges and pressures that Lawyers face on a daily basis. He emphasised to the 3rd Form class the amount of sacrifice required in the profession and reminded them that it always pays off in the end when you get to help real people dealing with real problems. Students were visibly interested in the presentation and posed various questions about the profession. The class shared a laugh as Mr. Rhudd tried to dispel the notion that “Lawyers are Liars” all while trying to convince the students not to listen to everything reported in the media and that known criminal offenders or even “the PAGE 42 JUMP MAGAZINE Vampire Killer” are still entitled to legal representation.
