The Big Fish Pop-Up Cafe

So here it is: the 2018 Clonmel Junction Arts Festival! The theme of this year’s festival is the River Suir and the wealth of creativity that springs from it. The sheer number of amazing artists that hail from the town, or are connected to it in some way, is something that Clonmel is rightly proud of, and this year we’re celebrating these artists in our HOME-GROWN HEROES strand which you’ll see highlighted throughout the programme. From supertalented singer-songwriter Ruairí de Leastar and rising stars Pale Rivers to iconic dj and activist Tonie Walsh, local artists are at the heart of this year’s festival. A special thank you is due to all the Festival Friends and Sponsors who’ve supported this initiative. Clonmel Junction Arts Festival (CJAF) is a festival for all the people of the town and we’ve set out to programme as wide a range of events as possible. Whether you’re into award-winning theatre or cutting-edge dance, the hottest new sounds or traditional tunes, death-defying circus or clowning around, there’s something to satisfy all ages and tastes. But don’t just stick with what you know – why not take a chance on something unique like Every morning I wake and seem to forget…, our audio promenade show in Raheen House, or help Maurice Caplice to finish his sculpture series, The River Animals Take to the Streets?

Take a break between shows at this relaxed pop-up cafe, serving coffee and light bites throughout the day.

In the months leading up to the festival we’ve been working with a number of schools and community groups, and the fruits of their labours are all around. Be sure to check out Pat Looby’s wonderful new tapestry in the Barracks Church, made by local primary school children. We’re honoured that James Earley is returning with another extraordinary public sculpture, and look out for him during the festival, hard at work on gates around the town. Why not stop for a chat?

MON 2 - SUN 8 JULY KICKHAM BARRACKS CHURCH

Whatever you do this year, we hope you embrace the festival in all its many forms. You won’t regret it – it’s a #SuirThing ☺ Nollaig & Bridget

Silent Underneath Forgotten Silent “Hopeless, helpless, in-the-way person” Homeless McGoldrig has lost it all - including his mind. Dare to laugh at despair and gasp at redemption in this brave, bleak, beautiful production for which Fishamble and Pat Kinevane won an Olivier Award in 2016.

Theatre Written & Performed by PAT KINEVANE Directed by JIM CULLETON

Underneath Is beauty really only skin deep? Does ugliness hide somewhere deeper? This stunning play is a blackly comic, rich and vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes, under the nose of everyday life. The multiaward-winning Fishamble production explores the surface, and what lies underneath.

The Three Fat Women of Antibes

Following the success of Raccoon, Goodnight Irene and A Game Called Lucy Finally Wins, Julie Sharkey returns to the festival with her latest onewoman show, The Three Fat Women of Antibes. Set in 1955, The Three Fat Women of Antibes is an adaptation of the classic short story by Somerset Maugham. Three best friends who diet decide to take a house at Antibes, but become uneasy when a slim visitor arrives. As the visitor tucks into croissants and thick cream, the ladies grow weak and begin to despise each other.

Written by W SOMERSET MAUGHAM Performed by JULIE SHARKEY

Staged in the wonderful Hickey’s Bakery & Cafe, The Three Fat Women of Antibes is a delicious tale of food, friendship and the joy of chocolate eclairs. Light bites, beer and wine will be available to purchase at the show.

Eggsistentialism By JOANNE RYAN “I read somewhere that 10,000 of a woman’s eggs die every day. I’ll be lucky if I have enough left to make an omelette!” Joanne Ryan’s acclaimed one-woman show is a funny, tender and moving exploration of reproduction in 21st-century Ireland. Looking down the barrel of her final fertile years, Ryan goes on a comical quest to uncover the ifs, hows and crucially the whys of reproducing her genes. Mixing animation with stand-up, monologue, and recorded interjections from Ryan’s mother, Eggsistentialism takes a light-hearted but unflinching look at one of life’s most compelling dilemmas: whether to sacrifice your independence for the adventure of parenthood.

The award-winning Tumble Circus is much more than your average highwire act, mixing breathtaking spectacle with theatre and comedy. In this explosive show, five internationally renowned acrobats, jugglers and aerialists go in pursuit of mischief. Shot through with moments of pure poetry, astounding acrobatics and high-wire laughter, Unsuitable is circus as you’ve never seen it before: prepare to laugh, think and be amazed!

#SUIRTHING It’s 250 years since a young English cavalry officer called Philip Astley built an amphitheatre that brought together acrobats, clowns and daredevil stunt riders in a single, circular space, and the modern circus was born. To celebrate the anniversary of Astley’s great innovation, CJAF is delighted to bring big top circus to Clonmel. Throughout the festival, the Big Top at Kickham Barracks will host everything from theatre shows to Unsuitable, the kind of high-wire spectacular of which Astley would surely approve. So roll up, roll up! The circus is in town!

With a new album in 2016 and a European tour last year, the band are on a roll, buoyed by a back catalogue featuring some of the great indie anthems. Don’t miss them at Bakers!

Don’t let the name mislead you: the Grammy-nominated California Feetwarmers might be based in LA, but the music they play is the swampy, steamy sound of New Orleans, c.1920. Armed with banjos and brass, this irrepressible seven-piece captures the spirit of the roaring twenties with exuberant covers of Scott Joplin, the Memphis Jug Band and other greats. The infectious energy of their live shows is guaranteed to bring you to your feet!

The School of Looking

Visual Art

For over a decade Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly have been making multidisciplinary art and science projects in partnership with world-class institutions. For Clonmel Junction Arts Festival they’ve put together The School of Looking: a week-long programme of art and science events, including an exhibition of interactive artworks that will change your relationship to time and colour; a summer school for younger visitors; talks and demonstrations, and of course their incredible Metaperceptual Helmets.

Metaperceptual Helmets

The Colour of Time

For many years Cleary Connolly have been exhorting people to see the world differently. This extraordinary series of wearable artworks enables you to see the world through the eyes of a range of creatures, both real and mythical, from a hammerhead shark to the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.

Cleary Connolly present three interactive artworks exploring our perception of colour and time.

TUESDAY 3 JULY 10AM - 6PM SOUTH TIPPERARY ARTS CENTRE, CLONMEL

A SCHOOL OF LOOKING EXHIBITION

Afterimage (2018) uses the phenomenon of negative afterimage to colour 20 black and white portraits of people who live and work in Galway. Real Time Rolling Shutter (2012) is inspired by Jacques-Henri Lartigue’s classic photograph of an automobile race, where an unusual distortion of the image captures and expresses movement in time. In the Picture (2010). This interactive installation uses a long exposure video to continuously mix the present moment with one thousand previous frames, representing one thousand moments passed. John Kennedy verlassen

John Kennedy’s paintings explore the abandonment of objects that may once have performed an important function. In verlassen (the German word for ‘abandoned’) he depicts subjects (including machinery, religious statues and fishing huts) left with nothing but the memory of their former glory, inviting the viewer to ponder the reasons for their demise. John Kennedy lives and works in Clonmel. He completed a BA in Fine Art at Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork in 1996. TUESDAY 3 - SUNDAY 8 JULY, 11AM-8PM BARRACKS MAGAZINE, FREE

Sarah O’Dea Misheard Lyrics

‘Excuse me, while I kiss this guy’, ‘Sweet dreams are made of cheese’, ‘I can see clearly now Lorraine has gone’: everyone has a favourite misheard lyric. Over the years calligrapher Sarah O’Dea has listened to friends and family belting out bizarre versions of what they think they’ve heard. The resulting lyrics are often much more interesting than the original. For this playful exhibition, specially designed for the festival, O’Dea has created a series of original gouache illustrations to frame these misheard lyrics. Funny, beautiful and strangely touching, Misheard Lyrics celebrates the accidental brilliance of our everyday mistakes. TUESDAY 3 - SUNDAY 8 JULY, 10.30AM-5.30PM THE NARROW SPACE GALLERY, FREE

The Camino Voyage For hundreds of years, pilgrims sailed from Ireland to A Coruña in northern Spain to walk the camino to Santiago de Compostela. In 2014 poet Danny Sheehy and his three-man crew (musicians Glen Hansard and Brendan Begley and artist Liam Holden) set out to recreate those ancient journeys in a tiny handmade boat called a Naomhóg. Pulling into coastal towns and villages en route, bringing stories, poetry and song, the crew touched the lives of everyone they met from Wales to northern Spain. Dónal Ó Céilleachair’s award-winning documentary charts the trials and tribulations of their epic voyage, telling an inspirational story of courage, friendship and determination.
