Welcome to the 2017 Golden North Salmon Derby

By CATHY MUÑOZ and DOUG LARSEN The cohos are returning, and it’s time for the iconic family event of the Juneau summer — the 71st annual presentation of the Golden North Salmon Derby!

The Territorial Sportsmen would like to invite you out on the water from Aug.11-13 for the chance to win up to $200,000 in cash and prizes donated by our generous local contributors.

But it’s not just about the money. By participating, you will be helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, which has provided more than $1.7 million in scholarships to Juneau area students since 1953.

So how does this all work? First you need to buy your derby ticket at one of our local vendors — Harri’s Plumbing and Heating, and, Foodland IGA Hardware downtown, Juneau Mercantile and Armory in the valley, Western Auto Marine in Lemon Creek, DeHart’s at Auke Bay, and Sportsman’s Warehouse in the Nugget Mall. The tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6-12. One ticket (plus alternates) will be drawn from all ticket holders, regardless of whether they fish or not, to be eligible to participate in the $44,000 High Five contest being sponsored by Bullwinkle’s Pizza.

Once you have your ticket it must be validated by a derby official before you can fish in the derby. Derby validations start at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, and the validation is good for the entire event. Lists of validation stations and hours are included in this publication as well as at the derby website, http://www. goldennorthsalmonderby.com.

As you head out on the water, be sure to go slow and observe the no-wake safety zones in Douglas, Auke Bay, and Amalga harbors.

With the potential for more than 400 vessels and up to 2,000 people on the water over the weekend, we want to make your safety a priority. Please check the maps of the safety zones, be courteous to all boats that are around you, and don’t risk disqualification by

going too fast.

Once you are out at your favorite fishing hole, fish to your heart’s content while following all appropriate Alaska Department of Fish and Game Regulations. Remember, each king and coho that you turn in to the derby is sold to fund the scholarship program for the youth of Juneau! Because these fish are sold to a commercial processor, there are a few simple guidelines to follow: 1. All fish must be kept in the round. Do not gut or gill your fish.

2. Ice down your fish as soon as they are caught. Ice is provided throughout the derby at Amalga, Auke Bay, and Douglas harbors and at several validation stations on Friday as well.

3. Keep your fish in first-class, bright condition by keeping them in a cooler that has a 2:1 mix of seawater to ice.

When you have caught a particularly big fish, or if it is simply time to turn in your haul of fish for the day, head for one of the three weigh stations … where you now have a decision to make. If you think your fish might be in the running for one of the Top 71 Prizes that are determined by weight, let the Derby official know that you would like to weigh your fish and your fish will be officially entered in the derby.

If you decide not to weigh your fish, you still have a chance to win by turning them in as scholarship fish. By doing so you will be entered in a drawing for more than $5,000 in prizes, as well as the chance to win up to $50,000 in the High Five drawing sponsored

by Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company and the Coeur Alaska Kensington Gold Mine. For more details on all prizes, be sure to read the prize sections in this publication carefully.

Once again, Alaska Glacier Seafoods is providing a packer boat located in the South Shelter Island area that will be accepting only scholarship fish throughout the weekend. The packer is not a weigh-in station, but can be a convenient option to drop off your scholarship fish in order to keep them as fresh as possible and avoid any congestion in the harbors.

Announcements will be made over the marine

radio on Channel 16 as to the exact location and availability of the vessel.

Unofficial results for weighed fish will be updated on the derby website each evening throughout the weekend. Once the derby is over, the results will be certified on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and all official results, including the winners of the scholarship fish drawings, will be posted to the website by Wednesday, Aug. 16.

All prizes will be given out at awards night at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall, starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17.

AWARDS NIGHT

Derby prizes will be awarded beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Center. Winners or designated representatives must attend awards night, and must present their entry and weigh-in ticket stubs in order to claim their prizes.

The official list of all prize winners will be available on the salmon derby website at www.goldennorthsalmonderby.com on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Winners of the Scholarship Fund and Special prizes must show their scholarship ticket to claim their prize from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. on awards night.

THE TOP 71 PRIZES!

The first 71 contestants catching the largest salmon will have their choice of any one of the prizes except that first prize goes to the largest fish and prize number 71 is reserved for the person catching the 71st top weight. With the exception of the 1st and 71st place prizes, the 2nd place finisher gets his or her choice of any remaining prize, then the 3rd place winner and so forth, until all prizes are claimed. Only one of the top 71 prizes will be awarded to each contestant. In case of a tie, the earliest entered weighed fish will receive the highest standing. If winners or their designated representative are not present on awards night to claim prizes, unclaimed prizes will revert to the derby committee.

Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Data updated to 2017 The Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, Inc. awarded $ 36,000 in scholarships in 2017. Three $12,000 undergraduate scholarships were given to Juneau area graduating seniors: Simon Marks and Cameron Jardell (Juneau Douglas High School), and Gavin Martin (Thunder Mountain High School).

The scholarship program began in 1953 with a scholarship awarded to Johnny Harris (a grandson of one of the founders of Juneau—Richard Harris). Since then, 308 scholarships and fellowships have been awarded, totaling $1,740,850.

Currently, there are 14 students active in our program.

Funding for the scholarship program comes primarily from four sources: The net sales of salmon donated through Territorial Sportsmen’s annual Golden North Salmon Derby, the return on investments in the Foundation’s endowment fund, contributions from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., and direct donations from the public.

Participants in the 2016 derby donated salmon worth $24,008.20. This amount goes directly into the TSSF, Inc. Endowment Fund.

• Pink and chum salmon will not be accepted. Derby participants are encouraged to return pink and chum salmon unharmed to the water unless they are retained for personal consumption.

• Derby entry fee and tickets. Contestants 13 years and older must purchase a $40 entry ticket. Contestants 6 to 12 years of age must purchase a $10 entry ticket.

These tickets are good for all days of the derby. No refund of entry fees will be made.

Contestants must validate their tickets on the first day of their fishing and may stay out on the derby grounds all three days. You need to validate your ticket only once.

• Derby officials are at the boat docks and harbors.

Contestants must take their fish to these officials for checking and weighing to become eligible to enter the competition for one of the top 71 fish, or for other prizes.

• Eligibility. Any person who has a validated derby entry ticket is eligible to fish in the derby. You must be born before Aug. 12, 2011 to participate in the derby (6 years of age). Children 12 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age. A person with a child ticket weighing-in a fish must be accompanied by an adult holding a validated derby ticket. Derby officials will check derby tickets of people accompanying a child weighing-in a fish.

The person who weighs in the fish must be the person who caught the fish. In the case of a protest, the anglers may be requested to pass a polygraph test.

• Entrants may not fish with non-entrants. Nonentrants, regardless of age, may not fish in the same boat with entrants, but may go along for the enjoyment of the outing.

• Tackle. Only lawful sport fishing tackle may be used.

• Boat fishing only. Derby participation is restricted to fishing from vessels.

Fish taken by dock fishing or shore fishing will not be accepted. All fish must be delivered in the round, uncleaned, to an official weigh-in station by vessel only.

• Weighing fish. Only the following stations will have scales that may be used for official weighing of salmon: Weigh-In Locations*: Amalga Harbor: 7:30am–7pm Auke Bay Harbor: 7:30am–7pm Douglas Harbor: 7:30am–7pm * See Signal Bomb paragraph for Sunday closure time.

• Validation of tickets.

Eight validating stations will be open. Not all validation stations are weigh-in stations. Tickets can be validated per the following locations and schedules: Amalga Harbor: 7:30am–7pm Auke Bay: 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m.

Aurora Basin*: 7:30am–8:30am Douglas Boat Harbor: 7:30am–7pm Fishermen’s Bend*: 7:30am–8:30am Harris Harbor*: 7:30am–8:30am

North Douglas Boat Ramp*: 7:30am–8:30am Tee Harbor*: 7:30am–12:00pm * Friday and Saturday only.

Contestants may proceed directly to the fishing areas after validating their derby entry tickets.

• Firearms. Use of firearms from any boat will disqualify all contestants on that boat from the derby.

• Fish quality. Salmon that show evidence of contamination, sun burn, bruising, and/or flesh deterioration will not be accepted. Dark fish will not be accepted and the decision of a derby official is final. Help us maintain fish quality. Fish must be uncleaned in the round.

• Signal bomb. A closing signal will be sounded near the three shore-based official weigh-in stations (Douglas Harbor, Amalga Harbor, Auke Bay Harbor) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, by which time all boats wishing to enter fish at the weigh-in stations for one of the top 71 prizes must be inside the finish line.

• Boats, speed and limits.

Every vessel propelled by machinery, regardless of horsepower, must have its name or number clearly displayed. Speed of all vessels during the derby, while within the reduced-speed areas (see map) is limited to five mph or less, to avoid large wakes. Markers to indicate the reduced speed zones near the three shorebased weigh-in stations have been placed at reasonable distances from the station.

• Derby area limits. Waters open to derby participants are described as follows: North boundary lines —

those waters south of a line from Point Bridget (58.40.699N, 134.59.25W) on the mainland to Point Whidbey (58.34.708N, 135.8.261W) on the Chilkat Peninsula; and, those waters south of a line extending from Cooper Point (58.14.215N,134.6.371W) to the north shore of Greely Point (58.12.864N, 134.5.188W) in Taku Inlet.

South boundary lines — those waters north of a line extending from Point Lizard Head (58.10.9N, 134.52.7W) to the south shore of Rocky Island (58.10.6N, 135.03.15W) and then to the south end of Entrance Island (58.11.7N, 135.05.08W), and those waters north of a line extending from Twin Point (57.54.642N, 133.59.644W) on the Glass Peninsula, to Point Styleman (57.58.455N, 133.53.958W) on the mainland. All other waters are closed to Derby fishing.

• Once a contestant has validated, the contestant may not take a boat out of the derby area limits, except that Swanson Harbor and Port Snettisham are open for overnight anchorage. The contestant may return the boat to the harbor or take a boat from the water to trailer home. The contestant may return a boat to a harbor even if the contestant has a weigh-in fish but does not return to the harbor during official weigh-in hours.

• Any boat and all contestants thereon found in violation of speeding, boating outside the Derby area, or in any way posing a hazard to other contestants, shall be disqualified from the Derby.

• Prize policy and taxes.

The Territorial Sportsmen,

Inc. is not responsible for any prizes donated by merchants who do not give as pledged.

The values shown on the prize list are set by the donors. The Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. will not be responsible if any prizes prove to be less valuable than shown in the donor’s estimate. Taxes on all prizes are the responsibility of the individual winner. In accordance with IRS rules, winners of prizes valued at $600 or more must provide their taxpayer identification number at awards night.

Failure to do so will result in withholding the prize.

• Protests. Protests of any nature must be made in person at the Officials’ stations. Then the contestant must present his or her case personally to the Board of the Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. at their derby certification meeting at noon on the Tuesday following the derby.

• Certification. The certification meeting will be at the Mi Casa Restaurant at noon on the Tuesday following the derby.

Decisions of the Board are final.

• Special note. Derby participants must comply with Alaska Department of Fish and Game sports fishing regulations. Contestants cited for violating these regulations while in the derby will be disqualified.

• Special note. For special prizes and scholarship prizes involving age, the contestant must request that the dock worker note the angler’s age on the weigh-in slip.

Try this on the Grill: Cooking Fish Cooking on a grill is not just conducive to making steaks or burgers. Seafood is something that also cooks easily and tastefully over an open fire.

Grillmasters too often shy away from cooking seafood on the grill. They may feel it's too complicated. Although cooking fish on the barbecue requires a little know-how, it tends to be just as easy as cooking traditional barbecue fare once you get the hang of it.

Fileted fish tends to break apart quite easily once it is cooked. If you have reservations about cooking fish on a grill, you may want to start with a thicker cut of fish, or the entire fish itself. Fish steaks are thicker cuts and, though they take longer to cook on the grill, they'll also hold together better than thin, filet slices. Many different types of fish can be cut into steaks, including halibut, salmon, shark, tuna, and more.

Even if the fish you are cooking is thick, there is still a chance of making a mess of it while grilling unless you follow two important rules: Cook on a well-oiled grill, and don't touch the fish too much during cooking. A well-oiled

surface is essential to keeping the steak or filet from sticking to the rungs of the grill. Many people like to flip grilled foods several times to check for doneness, but doing so with fish can cause it to flake apart. Instead, leave the fish alone until the edges have become opaque and are just starting to flake apart before you turn it. Then do not handle the fish again until you are ready to take it off the grill.

Cooking directly over the flame is fast, but you also can use non-stick foil and steam the fish within a foil packet. With this method of cooking you can better seal in juices and even top the fish with lemon slices or vegetables so the items cook together.

Using a foil packet also helps keep the fish from breaking apart on the grill, and can be a safe method to try if this is your first foray into grilling fish.

Finned fish are not the only types of sea-dwelling creatures that can be cooked on the barbecue. Everything from clams to shrimp can be tossed on the barbecue.

Oysters and clams can be cleaned and placed directly on a well-oiled grill. Simply cook for 3 to 4

minutes until the shells of the oysters and clams open up widely.

Shrimp can be grilled using a seafood basket that keeps the food contained for easy flipping en masse.

Otherwise, slide shrimp on kabob skewers or bamboo sticks (soak wood sticks in water before putting on the grill) to cook easily. Shrimp cooks quickly. Check for a pink color after a few minutes so the shrimp don't overcook and become rubbery.

You can also cook lobster or crayfish on the grill. Parboil the lobster inside the house for a few minutes.

Then take the lobster out of the pot and dunk into ice water to stop the boiling process. Halve the lobster and brush each side with melted butter.

Then place the lobster, meat-sidedown, onto the grill. Cook for an additional 5 minutes per side, or until the meat looks opaque in color.

Grilling seafood is nothing to fear. Once you master some of the techniques for success, delicious meals will follow. ÂŽCTW

JDHS class donates boat to Salmon Derby

Salmon Derby Co-Chair Doug Larsen still remembers a small rowboat his dad built for him when he was 12 years old. It lasted him decades before he finally got rid of it a just last year.

At this year’s Golden North Salmon Derby, another Juneau youngster will earn a rowboat of his or her very own.

In this year’s Salmon Derby, one of the prizes will be a 10-foot rowboat that the Juneau-Douglas Woodworking class donated to the derby this summer.

The top finisher in the youth category (aged 16 or younger) will win the boat, Larsen said.

JDHS teacher Collin Dukes’ CHOICE Boat Building class makes a rowboat every semester, according to the class website, and usually sells the boat to get the money back for material costs. This boat, however, the class decided to donate to the Salmon Derby.

“We’re pretty tickled that they thought to donate it

to the Derby,” Larsen said earlier this week.

The 71st annual Salmon Derby runs from Aug. 11-13, and 71 contestants will win prizes for catching the largest salmon. The prizes, including the boat, will be distributed at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall. The boat seems to be pretty durable, Larsen said, and has a chance to last for a long time if it’s properly stored and cared for.

Larsen was impressed by the quality of the boat, comparing it to the House Build program, run

by JDHS teacher Andy Bullick, where high school students learn construction skills by actually building a house.

“Any time you take a group of high school kids and come up with a nice product like this,” Larsen said, “it’s kind of like the (House Build) program that Andy Bullick does, it’s pretty remarkable.”

Derby Dedication for Susan Listberger The 2017 Golden North Salmon Derby Committee is pleased to dedicate its 71st derby to Susan Listberger.

Susan, born Susan Meketa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, moved to Juneau with her parents and four sisters when she was 5 years old. Susan fondly recalls her early years of derby fishing in Juneau. She, her parents, and four sisters would motor up to the starting line outside the Douglas Boat Harbor, waiting for the cannon to signal each day’s start. Huddled together with her sisters in the bow of the family’s 16-foot wooden boat, her father would open the throttle as the mass of boats launched off the starting line at the boom of the cannon. Susan and her family members have continued to remain active participants in the derby over the past four decades, placing a few times in the top fish, but mostly having fun just being part of the exciting event.

After graduating from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1978, Susan moved to Olympia, Washington where she worked two years for a private company before relocating to Seattle to work for Alaska’s Marine Highway System. After 2 ½ years in Seattle, Susan transferred

with AMH back to Juneau and has been here ever since. In 1987 she married Tom Listberger. She and Tom have two sons.

In 1994, Susan left State service to open her own business, Bookkeeping Plus, and to spend more time with her children. A year after opening her business, Susan was hired to oversee the financial records for The Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. With her involvement with TSI and her history with and knowledge of the Golden North Salmon Derby, Susan was soon hired to serve as the derby coordinator, a function she performed flawlessly for several years.

Some years, in addition to being the derby’s coordinator, she tripled up as its prize and food chairs as well.

After several years serving as coordinator, Susan stepped down from the position. She continues to coach and mentor new coordinators and help out whenever she can. In 2008 and 2009, Susan stepped up to co-chair the derby. Throughout her involvement with TSI and the Golden North Salmon Derby Susan has remained an active source of information, help, and insights for derby coordinators and chairs, alike.

It is with great pleasure that this year’s derby committee recognizes Susan for her dedication and many contributions to the organization, the derby, and Juneau’s youth. Please join us in congratulating Susan on her welldeserved recognition.

It’s not easy to put into words memories of a friend who lived life as fully as Kathy.

She was at the center of our best efforts – organizing community events, serving on boards – always advocating for good change.

She believed passionately in a prosperous Southeast, and was a dogged defender of Alaska’s capital city.

Fun, talkative, engaging, Kathy was a whirlwind of activity, a true networking force.

She served on the Alaska Committee Board, chaired the 50th anniversary Capital City Celebrations, and co-chaired the Golden North Salmon Derby seven times between the years of 1979 and 1996.

Kathy worked in the visitor industry for 40 years – 15 years as manager of the Glacier Bay Lodge. She also worked with Holland America, Allen Marine and Four Seasons Marine, always working to showcase the best of Alaska.

Kathy was a lifelong resident of Southeast. Born in Juneau on September 29, 1942 to James and Jessie Orme, she grew up in Juneau’s close knit community and early on developed a knack for bringing people together.

A 1960 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, Kathy was known for

keeping in touch with her classmates and organizing reunions and gatherings over the many years.

Kathy’s feisty spirit and strongly expressed points of view could be disarming at times, but her straightforward candor was refreshing in the era of the politically correct.

Over the years, we spoke often about her latest projects and advocacies.

She was especially concerned for the Alaska Marine Highway System and was determined to make sure this most vital Southeast transportation network was well-supported.

On April 22, 2017, a memorable party in Kathy’s honor was held at the Juneau Yacht Club. Hundreds of people came. Young and old, Republican and Democrat, blue collar and company bosses. It was striking how diverse the gathering was, but not surprising for the fact that Kathy Hildre touched so many.

Kathy is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Ron, son Jim, and daughter Stormy Keyes.

The Territorial Sportsmen Board of Directors and organizers of the 71st Golden North Salmon Derby are honored to recognize Kathy Hildre for her outstanding contributions to the success of the Derby and the educational opportunities provided to generations of Juneau youth.

Handle your fish with care Please help provide more money for scholarships by taking care of your fish! The following guidelines have been provided by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game for keeping your fish in the best possible condition so the maximum value is retained.

Do everything possible to preserve the quality of your fish: • DO NOT clean your fish!* Fish must be delivered IN THE ROUND! • Keep fish moist and cool.

• Please ice your fish in a slush mixture of 1/3 ice to 2/3 Sea Water (ice is available at all weigh-in stations and Tee Harbor.)

• Please do not put fish in plastic bags. Use wet burlap if you do not have ice.

• Turn in your fish as soon as possible. * State of Alaska, Dept. of Environmental Conservation regulations do not allow cleaned fish to be accepted by the Derby.
