Norma D. Smith April, 1935 - June, 2018 Dee Dee Smith of Sequim, WA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on June 15, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dee Dee was born in Juneau, Alaska in 1935 to Amanda and Norman Cook and the family lived in a log cabin on Lynn Canal. She was very proud of her Alaskan heritage and enjoyed numerous visits back to Juneau with family members over the years. Dee Dee graduated from the University of Washington in 1957 and was affiliated with Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Regardless of where Dee Dee lived, she involved herself in the local Pi Phi Alumnae groups. After college, she taught elementary school at Cherry Crest Elementary in Bellevue, WA, and finished her career at Seafirst Bank and Eddie Bauer as a computer programmer. Dee Dee’s passions in life were her grandchildren, rhododendrons, hiking (she and Bob spent two weeks on the Pacific Crest Trail), boating up into Canada, and later in life travelling by motor home on four trips up into Alaska and the Yukon. She took great pride in sewing blankets for Children’s Hospital through Project Linus. Dee Dee is survived by her husband of almost 40 years, Bob Smith; two children from her first marriage, Wendy Hulett (Bob) and Kris Lepsoe (Sarah); and Bob’s children Doug Smith (Jill) and Lisa Huntley. She was a very proud grandmother to 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held in late July. Dee Dee would be thrilled that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to Project Linus. Information about donating can be found on their website, projectlinus.org

Zelia & Estrella are the very best of friends. They enjoy cuddling in their little hut together and holding secret conversations that will suddenly stop once they realize they are being watched. Even though they are very close they are not against making new friends and are quite content to sit and snuggle with anybody who has the time. Zelia and Estrella are seeking a forever home that can show them the love and affection that they are currently providing for one another.
Rain
Rain is a funny little girl with big blue eyes and a tiny orange nose that she likes to rub against people. Rain does not seem to be as timid as her sister Storm and is making friends here at the shelter. Her favorite buddy to snuggle with is still her sister but she enjoys venturing out and seeing more of what the world has to offer. Rain is seeking a loving forever home that can engage her curiosity and provide her with hours of entertainment.
Storm
Storm is a beautiful Siamese mix with lovely tortoiseshell markings and big blue eyes. She is new to the shelter and still quite shy but seems to be making new friends easily. She came in with her sister Rain and enjoys cuddling with her when she starts to become overwhelmed. Storm is looking for a forever home with lots of little hidey holes for her to play in and a loving family to dote on her.
Cilantro
Cilantro is a majestic young man with sleek black fur that would prefer to be referred to as “Your Majesty. He is the king surveying his kingdom as he watches the other cats from the highest point he can find. Cilantro is very affectionate but, like most royalty, can take some time getting to know new people and may come off a haughty at first. Cilantro is seeking a forever home he can rule over with a loving family that can pander to his every wish.

Donald Frank Love, 86 September 2, 1931 – February 22, 2018 Donald Frank Love, 86 of North Pole, AK, passed away peacefully at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on February 22, 2018. He left this world to join his wife Kathy who passed before him December 22, 2016. They are now reunited to walk a new journey together through eternity. Don was born in Baker, Oregon, on September 2, 1931, to Frank and Junia (Shields) Love. He was the eldest of 3 sons. They lived on the family homestead at the mouth of Goose Creek, near Keating, until Don was about 12. During the war they moved to Huntington then back again to Baker where Don graduated from Baker High School in 1949. He married Betty Hensley on May 28, 1951, and together they had four children. Don and Betty later divorced and he moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, to join his parents in 1957. He met Kathy and they married on June 9, 1961. With Don’s three children and Kathy’s four, their blended family grew to eight when their daughter KC was born a year later. Don often spoke fondly of his childhood days on the farm. He shared cherished memories of his dog Rex and of living and working on the land that had been in the Love family since his great-grandfather traded a team of oxen for a land claim in 1870. Don as a young man enjoyed music and motorcycles. In his teenage years he rode an Indian motorcycle, played football and played the steel guitar. Don worked construction and traveled to many locations around the State of Alaska. Kathy told him in the beginning that she was up to any adventure and she had no desire to be a construction worker’s summer widow so if he wanted to follow his dream he had to find a place
for the family to join him and that is exactly what he did. He followed his dream while making time for his family. Don worked construction in the summer and when the season ended he returned to home base Juneau and supported his family working for the City Borough of Juneau on the seasonal snow removal crew. He eventually retired from 302 Operating Engineers and worked full time for the borough as a mechanic for the airport runway maintenance crew until his retirement in 2000 after 20 + years of service. Don is preceded in death by his wife Kathy, children Donald, Nels, and K’Lynn, grandson Paul, his parents and his brother Richard (Dick). He is survived by his children Clayton, Wayne (Marlene), and Lawrence (Sheryl), all of Juneau; LaDona May (Keippie) of Terrebonne, Oregon; Leona Deitch of (Wassilla, Alaska); and Katherine Love (KC) of North Pole. He is also survived by his brother Ken, 12 grandchildren (and their spouses), 17 greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews that he held dear to his heart. There will be a celebration of life the evening of July 18, 2018 at the family home, 832 Keeling Road from 5 pm – 10 pm. Friends and family are welcome to stop by and share food, drink and a favorite memory. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Doctors, nurses, and all the staff that were involved with his end of life care. You made a difficult time so much easier for us to bear, thank you. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Don’s name to the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1650 Cowles St, Fairbanks, AK; or on line https:// fairbankshospitalfoundation.com, Specify Hospice.

Avrum Michael Gross 1936 - 2018
We celebrate the life of Avrum Gross, 82, who died of cancer on May 8, 2018 at his wilderness home in Southeast Alaska. He said he had a “gift year” after deciding to live life to the fullest rather than spend time and energy on uncertain treatment.
Av grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Amherst College and the University of Michigan Law School. He planned to join a Wall Street law firm after two years in Alaska for an adventure – and great fishing. Instead, he fell in love with the state and never left. Governor Walker had flags lowered to honor Av’s many contributions to the state. Av began his government career in 1960 at the Legislative Affairs Agency, drafting many of the brand new state’s laws. He then moved to the Dept. of Law and, at age 25, successfully argued Alaska’s landmark fish trap case before the US Supreme Court, the first of his five appearances there. In 1963, he joined the Juneau law firm Faulkner, Banfield, Boochever & Doogan and was named a partner in 1972. Governor Jay Hammond appointed Av Attorney General in 1974. He became one of Hammond’s most trusted advisers during a period of tremendous state growth and played a key role in nearly every major challenge, including the pipeline, Permanent Fund, federal-state-Native land issues, buy-back of Katchemak Bay oil leases, mandates for rural schools and criminal justice reform. He had a special knack for finding common ground out of discord and articulating complex issues in a clear and never condescending manner. When Av left the AG’s Office in 1980, Hammond gave him a treasured fly rod engraved with his thanks. After two years teaching at Stanford Law School, Av returned to private practice in Juneau at Gross & Burke, working primarily with state and local governments and public agencies. After 22 years, he “retired” to the wilderness lifestyle he loved to share with family and friends. A great believer in constitutional principles, Av helped form Alaska’s chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union but his interests went well beyond the law. He was an initial director of the State Museum, a charter Juneau Symphony violinist and a board member and chair of Alaska Pacific Bank. A classically trained violinist turned fiddler, Av played in the first Juneau Folk Fest and with a band called “The Grateful Dads.” He even won a state fiddlers championship in Haines. Av absolutely loved living and working in Alaska. Refreshingly modest about his intellect and accomplishments, he related to everyone with respect and an often kooky sense of humor. He was quick to give encouragement and often gave free legal assistance. No public service is planned, but in Av’s memory please give encouragement and help to someone who could really use it. Av is survived by his children Jody, Alan, Elizabeth and Claire, five grandchildren, siblings Ruth and Dick, and his soul mate and partner of 20 years, Annalee McConnell. Letters to the family can be sent to Annalee’s mail drop: 8991 Yandukin Drive, Suite 10, Juneau AK 99801.
Esther Lillian Liberty
February 28, 1939 – June 07, 2018 Esther Lillian Liberty passed away peacefully at her home in Juneau on June 7, 2018, lovingly surrounded by close family. She was born on February 28, 1939 in Juneau, AK, eldest daughter to Harvey and Marietta Williams Sr. She was Raven; T’akdeintaan of the Kaa Shaayi Hit (Severed Head House) and her Tlingit name was Seiyeikú. Esther grew up in Sitka and graduated from Sitka High School. She worked at the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) from 1990 and retired from the system in 2001. Esther truly lived life to the fullest through a simple life with simple pleasures, from going out for a drive to enjoy nature, to just watching people as God’s beautiful creations. She was a fighter, a courageous, strong woman who always had a positive outlook in life, just as she wanted everyone to have. She loved everything purple as it was her favorite color, from her trinkets to clothes, and even her nails. Ever so thoughtful, she would never forget to shop for others while she was out of town. Some of her favorite times out and about were to watch movies, eat at restaurants, and have Easter brunches with family. She had always loved and treasured family gatherings especially on Thanksgiving Days and Christmases and enjoyed cooking; she also made the best potato salad. She always made sure to have Christmas presents to everyone especially the kids in the family. Esther loved to spend time with all her grandchildren, especially the youngest Samuel, as well as all her great grandchildren. She loved to travel and explore, most importantly, to visit and spend time with family. “We miss you, Gramma.”
Left to honor Esther and remember her love are her children Carl Liberty Sr., Virgil (Bel) Liberty and Michelle Liberty; grandchildren Carl ‘Milton’ Liberty Jr., Samuel Liberty, Michael (Janna) Liberty, Natasha (Gabe) Johnson, and Shelby Pruett; great grandchildren Logan, Aurora, Azrial, Tyren, Tavyn and Lilliana; siblings Harvey (Kathi) Williams Jr., Marion Berry, and Walleen Williams, Virgil’s motherin-law Rose Calunsag; brother-in-law Bill Trivett; cousin Glenn (Liz) Howard, nephews and nieces Harvey (Shana) Williams III, Todd (Kirsten) Berry, Ron (Mi) Berry, Sheryl DesBiens, Glenda (Tim) Drevas, Tara (Dale) Hume, YéilYádi Olson, Marsha (Allen) Heilbrun, Nicole (Kevin) Fischbeck, Kimberly (Ty) Brill, Jamie Trivett, Michael (Jennifer) Williams, Kevin (Jessica) Williams, Daniel (Kim) Whitson, Daneen Whitson, Levi Harriman, Jessica Meacock, and Krista Meacock. To celebrate her life and memory, a service will be held at Word of Life Christian Church on June 30, 2018 from 1-3PM. Her ashes will be spread with her daughter, LaVon Liberty. The family would like to give a special note of thanks to Pastor Ariel and Daisy Yadao, hospice care staff especially her favorite nurse Marilyn, dialysis center, Abby, Tammy, family, friends and coworkers who helped care for Esther during her last few moments with us.
