In recent years, the study of happiness has become a legitimate field of science. Some of the research that I find particularly interesting shows that purchasing new objects can raise our level of happiness, but only temporarily. Think about buying a newer car. At first you are excited about it every time you drive, even when going to work. Shortly thereafter, though, the car becomes your baseline for transportation and you go back to your normal level of happiness. Spending money on experiences seems to have the opposite effect, however. Our happiness actually increases over time as we relive the positive memories we have of our trip, dinner with good friends, or what have you. Experiences don’t always have to cost money either. When I happen to glimpse the top of Mt. McGuiness, I still feel happy about a camping trip on its peak a number of years ago.

MATCH OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Angus and Claire who have been matched for 12 years! The Big Brothers Big Sisters program can start as young as 6 years of age and goes through high school graduation. Angus and Claire stayed together as a match for the entire duration of the program and plan on being friends indefinitely. A 6-year-old Angus is shown here enjoying a pumpkin carving activity with Claire. The second photo is a heartfelt hug they shared at Angus’ high school graduation. They’ve come a long way together! Claire states, “Angus was a lively first grader when we were matched in the school program. We had so much fun that we became a community match. Watching this young man grow up has been a highlight of my life. Bonding when he was little helped both of us as he became a teenager. We navigated life’s ups and downs in both our lives and I was so proud to watch my 6 foot tall ‘Little’ Brother graduate from Yaakoosge Daakahidi in June. Investing in a child’s life paid dividends not only to me, but to the whole community. Angus shared that when he and Claire were first matched he was disappointed because he had wanted a Big Brother. “I found out that Claire was a tomboy and not at all what I expected,” Angus explained. “It wasn’t what I thought I wanted but it turned out super-awesome!” Angus relates that he’s glad he was open-minded because, “I grew to love her as a friend and it helped shape me into the person I am today.” When reflecting back on their time together as a match and being part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Angus shared that he’s grateful for opportunities he wouldn’t have had, like going ziplining and skiing at Eaglecrest. “Being a Little Brother was supercool. More people should try it! It’s cool to have someone you can always talk to,” according to Angus.
