“I fell off a cliff.”

Henry Cheng, Trust beneficiary, Juneau

THE TRUST HELPS LOCAL PROGRAMS HELP LOCAL PEOPLE. It was early April. Henry had just played his first Juneau-Douglas High School varsity soccer game. The car he was riding in pulled over and Henry jumped over the guardrail not realizing there was a sheer cliff on the other side. He fell 100 feet. Henry suffered a traumatic brain injury and spent almost 100 days in a Seattle hospital. His family didn’t know whether he’d ever be able to return home. They were then relieved to discover there was help in Juneau. Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) empowers elders and people with disabilities by providing services and information that positively affect independence and productivity. They helped make Henry’s home accessible, widening doors and installing a lift. Visit them at sailinc.org. REACH is committed to creating communities free of barriers for people with disabilities. They provided Henry’s family with referrals and services for physical, occupational and speech therapy. Learn more at reach.org.

These and other Juneau organizations are supported by grants from the Alaska Mental Health Trust. To learn more visit: ALASKAMENTALHEALTHTRUST.ORG

“…suddenly the rug was pulled out from under us. Knowing we weren’t alone and that there were people with answers and resources was a huge relief.” - Kristen, Henry’s Mom

The Mission of the Alaska Mental Health Trust is to Improve the Lives of its Beneficiaries. Much like a private foundation, its resources ensure Alaska has a comprehensive integrated mental health program. Beneficiaries of the Trust include Alaskans with: • Mental illness • Developmental disabilities • Chronic alcoholism and other substance related disorders • Alzheimer’s disease, and related dementia • Traumatic brain injuries

John Clay Phillips 1958 - 2018

A fisherman of the sea… John unexpectedly lost his life near Clark’s Point in Nushagak Bay near Dillingham, Alaska on the morning of Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle, Nephew, Cousin, Captain, Crew, Neighbor, and Friend. John was a long-time resident of Juneau, Petersburg, and Pelican. John was widely known as a highliner fisherman of black cod and halibut, following in the footsteps of his parents. John spent many years on the ocean on various fishing vessels: the F/V’s Aloha, Nancy K, Shamrock, Echo Belle, and Lone Fisherman. John sold the Lone Fisherman to his son who changed its name back to the Pacific Knight. John worked with many deckhands, several of whom were with him through rough waters and calm seas; they realized a closeness in their hard work together. John’s wheelhouse motto was, “You’re only young once but if you do it right once is enough.” Throughout the years, John loved to hunt, fish, go for skiff rides, read, watch movies and drive long road trips in his truck; often accompanied with his dog Roscoe. He was known by many to be kind, generous, and friendly to those around him. John is survived by his wife Penney of Juneau, AK, parents Jake and Nancy of Sitka, AK, sons Jeb (Angela) and Aaron and their mother Maura, grandchildren Brayden, Blayre and Isla of Petersburg, AK, brother James (Patricia) of Pelican, nephews James, Jordan, and Frederick of Sitka, and nephew Carl of Pelican, and mother-in-law Janice of Twin Falls, Idaho, brother-in-law Rick (Mitzi) with 6 children and 5 grandchildren of Heyburn, Idaho and sister-in-law Lori with 3 children and 8 grandchildren of Jerome, Idaho. The family would like to recognize Icicle Seafoods, the crew of the F/V Amanda C. And thank you all for your phone calls, visits, food, cards, and your acts of kindness are dearly appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held in Sitka at a date yet to be determined.
