A quick drive from downtown, Mendenhall Glacier is one of the world’s few “urban” glaciers and a rare “drive-up” glacier, perhaps the most accessible in Alaska. “The Glacier,” as locals call it, draws more than 400,000 visitors a year - and for good reason. About half a mile wide at its face and rising 100 feet from the water, Mendenhall Glacier ends at iceberg-strewn Mendenhall Lake. Easily view the glacier and lake from scenic observation points, U.S. Forest Service hiking trails, and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily throughout the summer, the visitor center also offers exhibits and education emphasizing glacial phenomena, ecosystems, and protection of fish and wildlife (keep your eyes peeled for black bears). A flat, well-developed trail leads less than a mile to Nugget Falls, with up-close and personal glacier views and the chance to spot mountain goats on nearby cliffs. Commercial operators offer glacier hiking, biking, rafting, canoe, and kayak trips, plus bus, van, taxi, and shuttle tours. Or go flightseeing by helicopter or fixed-wing plane. Helicopters offer opportunities to land and walk about on the ice; dogsledding is another popular Juneau Icefield activity.

The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Area which includes the Visitor Center, Steep Creek Trail, Photo Point Trail, the restrooms as well as bus shelters and viewing pavilions charges a $5 admission for adults and children under 16 are free.

Tracy Arm:

“Where Icebergs are Born” Within a day’s round-trip south of Juneau, a boat ride brings you to Tracy Arm Fjord. Here, sheer granite walls and steep waterfalls meet calm emerald water dotted with some of Alaska’s largest icebergs (a favorite hangout for harbor seals and their pups). But the main attraction: North Sawyer and South Sawyer Glaciers, which actively calve huge chunks of blue ice into the water. Witnessing a calving glacier is, quite literally, an earth-shattering experience. Tracy Arm remains one of Juneau’s most popular excursions—for tourists and locals alike. Get Me There! Creek Valley, easily viewed from turnouts along Egan Drive and accessed via a hiking trail. North of town, a longer, hiking trail leads to Eagle Glacier and a shorter, smoother trail - excellent for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking - leads through old-growth forest and along a glacial flood plain to Herbert Glacier. A short boat or floatplane south of Juneau is Taku Glacier, a great place to spot wild black bears and moose.

Gateway to Glacier Bay: The most remarkable thing about the breathtaking shorelines, bays, and fjords of Glacier Bay National Park: when George Vancouver first ventured into Icy Strait in 1794, those shorelines, bays, and fjords were all completely covered by ice. After 200 years of thawing, this year marks 100 years of service for the National Park Service- making it the perfect time to visit. Glacier Bay offers premier wildlife and glacier viewing. At its mouth, the small town of Gustavus boasts luxury lodges, kayaking, biking, hiking, birding, fishing, and even a golf course. Let Juneau be your gateway to Glacier Bay. Only 33 air miles away, commuter flights provide year-round daily service to and from Gustavus. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry offers multiple weekly stops throughout the year. For information on Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, visit nps.gov/glba or call (907) 697-2230 (Oct.- Apr.) or (907) 697-2627 (May-Sept.). Get Me There! See Glacier Bay/Gustavus Tours, Activities & Lodging page 35

Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves Make no mistake. While the ice caves along the west side of Mendenhall Glacier are spectacular—a fantasy in deep blue crystal— venturing into glaciers is very dangerous. No established trails lead to the caves. Therefore, we strongly advise against visiting them without a professional guide.

Adventure To truly enjoy Alaska, you’ve got to get out into Alaska. For seasoned outdoor experts and enthusiastic newbies alike, Juneau teems with options. Whether it’s a rugged backcountry experience you seek or a guided tour that lets you discover Alaska wilderness by day and sleep in a comfy bed at night, in Juneau, you can choose your own adventure.

On Land:

Hiking, Biking, or Just Hanging Out When we say “take a hike,” we mean it. Literally. Here, more than 250 miles of trails - many beginning within city limits - range from fairly flat, paved, or planked nature walks to strenuous uphill treks. Or just stroll along a beach to watch the sunset. Complete Juneau trail information can be found at adventureflow.us/trailguide or alaska.org/ destination/juneau/trails.

On Water:

Kayaking, Rafting, Surfing, and Paddleboarding Juneau’s lakes, rivers, and protected coastal waters not only make for excellent boating, rafting, and kayaking, some outfitters offer surfing and paddleboarding (don’t worry, you wear a wetsuit).

By Air:

Flightseeing, Ziplining Skim the wilderness in a “bush” plane or helicopter up to the Juneau Icefield for a dog sled ride (and maybe a snowball fight; in the middle of summer, who can resist?). Appreciate the true vastness of our surroundings - and Juneau’s tiny toe-hold at its foot. Or, from a slightly lower but no less thrilling height, speed through old-growth forest on a zipline. We’ve got two. Get Me There! Outdoor Adventures & Activities page 39 Glacier Flightseeing & Activities page 36

Native Heritage Ancient threads interwoven in a modern social fabric. According to some scholars, the Tlingit (“clink-it”), Haida (“high-dah”), and Tsimshian (“sim-shee-an”) peoples have lived in Southeast Alaska since 8000 B.C.E. Language differs, but the three share similar art, ceremonies, beliefs, and legends, shaped by the land and sea. By incorporating traditional customs and beliefs into contemporary lifestyles, modern-day Southeast Alaska Natives preserve the gift of cultural heritage for future generations. From traditional music and dance to visual art - generally described as “formline” or “totemic” art - Juneau brims with opportunities to experience Native culture. This year saw the opening of the Sealaska Heritage/Walter Soboleff Center, a state-of-the art performance, exhibition, research, and living history center focusing on the rich language and culture of Southeast Alaska.

In 2016, Sealaska Heritage Institute will sponsor Celebration, a major culture festival held in Juneau every even year. The institute, a Native non-profit serving the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian of Southeast Alaska, first held the event in 1982. At the time, Native people were worried that young people weren’t learning their ancient songs and dances and that the culture was slipping away. The event (which sparked a movement across the region and renaissance of Native culture) was held to celebrate Southeast Alaska cultures and to prompt people to learn about their heritage. Today, Celebration is one of the largest events in the state, drawing thousands of people to the four-day festival, which features dance performances, a Juried Art Show and Competition, a Native art market, a Toddler Regalia Review, a parade, food contests, workshops and lectures. Celebration 2016 is scheduled June 8-11 and is open to the public.

Juneau is History A popular destination for thousands of years - literally!

Explore Historic Downtown Juneau

© Michael Penn

Juneau is one of the few towns in Southeast Alaska that didn’t burn down at some point in its history. As a result, many original buildings still stand, from 100-year-old hotels and saloons to historic churches and colorful Victorian houses. Look for blue three-sided signposts describing highlights of the immediate area.

Long before Juneau was Juneau it was Dzántik’i Héeni (“Base of the Flounder’s River”), a favorite Tlingit fishing spot dating back millennia. In 1880 Richard Harris and Joe Juneau, guided by Tlingit Chief Kowee, found gold at the mouth of Gold Creek, Alaska’s first major strike. The rush was on. Soon came miners, trading posts, saloons, and missionaries, forming a small town called Harrisburg - that is, before Joe Juneau successfully campaigned to change the name in 1881 (according to legend, by buying a few rounds the night before the vote).

While fishing, transportation, and milling all played economic roles, for the next 60 years, Juneau was a gold town. Until 1944, when WWII forced their final closure, Juneau’s mines produced nearly $150 million worth of gold ($7 billion today!). Government gradually replaced mining as the primary industry, followed by tourism. Drawn by Native heritage, prospector history, and incredible scenery, vacationers have been traveling to Juneau since the early 1900s. More than a hundred years later, it remains a worldrenowned tourist destination.

No wonder so many anglers get hooked on Juneau. Of course, we have salmon and halibut; but we also have lingcod, rockfish, steelhead, rainbow and cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden (that’s “Arctic Char” in the Lower 48).

Do-it-yourselfers can try their luck at the public fishing pier next to Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, the outlet of Sheep Creek (a few miles south of downtown) or Montana Creek off Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge) Trail.

There’s no winter like an Alaskan winter, especially in Juneau. Diverse terrain and healthy snowfall make it the best-kept secret in snow sports. In fact, in 2013, Juneau was voted second-best U.S. ski town by Powder magazine. Getting Around Town

Flying to Juneau is as easy and affordable as flying to any popular vacation spot. It’s less than a 2.5-hour flight from Seattle. Alaska Airlines offers daily jet service to Juneau from both Seattle and Anchorage, connecting to other cities in Southeast Alaska. Delta flies non-stop between Juneau and Seattle yearround. Commuter air carriers and charters serve smaller surrounding communities. You could conceivably eat breakfast at home and be in the middle of Alaskan wilderness by lunchtime … well, late lunch.

A popular port of call for cruise lines large and small, Juneau is also a major stop on the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), a state-owned ferry system providing yearround transportation to more than 30 coastal communities. A trip on the ferry is anything but typical. Sail past spectacular scenery and soak in the local culture of port communities and fellow passengers (no better place to meet locals than on the ferry). The AMHS is an official All-American Road, U.S. Department of Transportation’s highest honor. Visit ferryalaska.com for more information.

It’s tough to get lost in Juneau - our one main road extends less than 50 miles, and we’re bounded by mountains and water. Most attractions are easily reached via public or private transportation services; explore at your own pace by renting a car. Don’t want to worry about logistics and just enjoy the view? Bus tours, taxis, and the local public bus system, Capital Transit, are all affordable options. Transportation information for special needs visitors can be obtained at alaskaaccessibletravel.com. Juneau is the Trip of a Lifetime! Juneau in a Day In town for just a few hours or all day, there’s plenty to enjoy during a quick stay. Explore historic downtown, ride the Goldbelt Mt. Roberts Tramway, take in a museum, check out the salmon hatchery, go shopping, taste fresh local seafood, tour a botanical garden, or sample award-winning craft beer at the Alaskan Brewing Company. Mendenhall Glacier is a must-see and is only 13 miles from downtown. Other popular attractions and activities easily tackled in several hours: whale watching, flightseeing, sportfishing, hiking, biking, and kayaking. Juneau will fill your day - and then some.

Juneau in a Weekend Unpack your bags and go adventuring. Hit spots you missed the first day, obviously, but here’s your opportunity to discover

Juneau in more depth. Try a helicopter flight to the Juneau Icefield. Follow it up with a floatplane trip to remote Taku Glacier Lodge, where you can dine on salmon while viewing yet another glacier (and bears, most likely). Spend a full- or half-day trying to land the “Big One” aboard a fishing charter - charters also make for spectacular whale and sea lion viewing. Or, rent a car and drive “outthe-road,” stopping at one of many scenic turnouts, beaches, and hiking trails along our 48 miles of road heading out of town.

Juneau in a Week A week allows for a simultaneously more relaxed and more intense experience. Take a leisurely approach to all the previously mentioned activities, but break them up with full-day excursions to truly immerse yourself in wild Southeast Alaska. Departing

downtown in the morning and returning by dinner, Tracy Arm Fjord tours head into the narrow granite Tracy Arm Fjord, culminating at the actively calving Twin Sawyer Glaciers. For incredible wild brown bear viewing, licensed guide packages whisk you by floatplane to Pack Creek, on nearby Admiralty Island, where you can observe brown bears feasting on salmon. Take an early-morning commuter flight to catch the day-cruise into famous Glacier Bay and spend the night at a lodge or bed & breakfast in the charming community of Gustavus. When you get back to Juneau, try a longer hike, or go kayaking, biking, ziplining, or just hang out over great local seafood and a pint of Alaskan beer, toasting all your great Juneau memories. For point-by-point itineraries, visit traveljuneau.com, under “Things To See & Do.”

Meet the Neighbors! Juneau is a great jumping off point to visit several other small coastal communities. 3

Haines and or/Skagway can both be reached by 4-6 hour ferry or 40-minute commuter flight. Haines boasts historic Fort Seward and the Chilkat Valley Bald Eagle Preserve; Skagway: the scenic White Pass & Yukon Railroad train.

3 Petersburg, a fishing community 100 miles south, known as “Little Norway,” offers a delightful atmosphere in a spectacular setting.

20

3 Gustavus, 33 air miles away, is the Gateway to Glacier Bay. Other highlights: whale watching, kayaking, and golfing at Southeast Alaska’s legendary golf course. 3 Wrangell, a few miles east of Petersburg, is the starting point for tours to the bear-watching observatory at Anan Creek and river trips up the mighty Stikine River.

Juneau Alaska Touchable Glaciers | Watchable Wildlife | Accessible Wilderness

With more wildlife than people, more miles of trails than miles of roads, and more glaciers than you can see in a day, Juneau is Alaska’s wilderness capital.

Welcome to Juneau! Juneau is many things: a natural wonder; a wildlife viewing paradise; an outdoor Utopia; a cultural jewel rich in history, art, music, and Native heritage; a shopper’s trove; and a food lover’s dream. It’s a mountain city, a coastal city, a college town, and a transportation hub. It's not just the state capital – it’s the heart of Southeast Alaska. Pretty good for a tiny oasis of civilization in one the largest wilderness areas in the United States. Surrounded by intercoastal waterways, dense rainforest, steep mountainsides, wildflower-filled alpine meadows, and awe-inspiring glaciers - most famously, the Mendenhall Glacier, one of the world’s most easily accessible - Juneau offers every legendary Alaska experience you can think of (even surfing!). This guide and planner will help you decide where to go, what to do, and how to make the most of your Juneau adventure. You don’t have to be human to have fun here. Many wildlife viewing opportunities await you in Juneau. So keep your eyes open and cameras ready.

Humpback Whales

Orcas

Late spring through early fall, Juneau’s waters teem with krill and herring which attract humpback whales in incredible numbers. Nearly ten percent of the world’s population visits Southeast Alaska for a yearly summer feast, often engaging in a unique cooperative behavior known as “bubble-net feeding.” Herding prey toward the water’s surface in a shrinking “net” of bubbles, the whales suddenly launch upward, gulping thousands of fish at once. Bellies full, Juneau’s humpback whales also like to play - spyhopping, tail-slapping, and breaching to the delight of visitors.

Commonly known as killer whales, orcas aren’t really whales at all - they’re actually a species of dolphin. They are, however, killers. Orcas rank among Earth’s most skilled predators, known to pick off swimming moose, other whales, and even great white sharks. Of course, Juneau’s orcas prefer to eat salmon (who doesn’t?) and bait fish, living and hunting in units called pods, each with its own “language.” Revered kings of the ocean, orcas feature prominently in Southeast Alaska Native culture.

Naturally, whale watching is one of Juneau’s most popular activities. Best viewing occurs on the water - in fact, most tour operators offer money-back guarantees. But you can also see humpback whales from shore. Good land-based viewing spots: the north end of Douglas Island, Eagle Beach State Park, Sunshine Cove, and Point Bridget State Park. Really, anytime you find yourself near saltwater, watch for spouting. Get Me There! See Whale Watching &

Wildlife Viewing page 42

While more elusive than humpback whales, orcas are easier to spot - a male’s dorsal fin can reach six feet in height. They’re also nomadic, traveling as far as 100 miles a day. But when they’re around, word travels fast - especially among tour boat captains.

Bears Juneau is home to black bears and brown bears, aka “coastal grizzlies.” But despite their names, brown bears can be black and black bears can be brown, cinnamon, or even blue (the rare Southeast Alaska “glacier bear”). So how do you tell the difference? Grizzly bears have a pronounced shoulder hump, flatter face, and much larger claws. Toll Free 1-888-581-2201

Viewing Tips: • Always keep a safe distance. • Dawn & dusk are the best times for viewing. • Don’t let the weather stop youthe animals of Southeast Alaska don’t. • Be patient. Even with abundant wildlife, it may take time to spot. • Use binoculars or a telephoto lens. • When traveling through bear country —especially in thick brush or near salmon streams—make noise (e.g. talking, singing,

Around Juneau, brown bears live almost exclusively along shorelines, allowing them to gorge on salmon. Neighboring Admiralty Island, known in Tlingit as “Kootznoowoo,” meaning “fortress of the bears,” remains the best place to see brown bears, with a population exceeding 1,600 - compared to a human population of 650! A 30-minute seaplane ride from Juneau, Admiralty’s Pack Creek estuary provides exceptional brown bear viewing. Bear viewing permits are required and accommodations are extremely rustic (campsites, open shelters). Tour packages from Juneau include round-trip transportation, permits, and a knowledgeable, licensed guide. For information about Admiralty Island National Monument or Pack Creek bear viewing permit call the U.S. Forest Service at 1-877-444-6777 or visit recreation. gov.

Black bears enjoy a forest habitat and eat pretty much anything. As such, you’re much more likely to encounter a black bear than a brownie, especially close to civilization. Juneau is a place where black bears can and do appear all over town; one even walked into a downtown bar (no joke!). While black bears aren’t nearly as aggressive as grizzlies, always be aware of your surroundings and if you do encounter one, never approach, feed, or harass it. Wave your arms and make noise to let it know you’re human.

Mountain goats • Porcupines • Marmots Sitka black-tailed deer • Steller sea lions Harbor seals • Countless bird species

For a more controlled black bear viewing experience, try the Steep Creek bear viewing platforms at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

Eagles More bald eagles live in Alaska than anywhere else in the U.S., and Southeast Alaska boasts the state’s densest population. Simply put, Juneau is eagle heaven. For months at a time, Alaska’s capital is a smorgasbord of spawning salmon and an endless forest of lush, green perches.

traveljuneau.com | juneaualaska.com

While you won’t not see an eagle in Juneau, good eagle viewing spots include Auke Bay Boat Harbor and the land-spit near Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, right at the mouth of Salmon Creek. Care to guess why eagles hang out there?
