In spite of a deepening economic crisis, VH1 Save The Music advanced its mission in 2008, restoring music programs in 98 public schools. Over the past 11 years, the Foundation has provided over $43 million worth of musical instruments to over 1,600 schools nationwide. The Foundation’s goal is to distribute $100 million worth of new instruments by 2017 –a milestone we get closer to everyday with your continued support. As we present this report, we are thrilled to announce the inaugural class of our VH1 Save The Music Ambassadors – Beyoncé, Chris Webber, Gavin DeGraw, Jamie Foxx, Johnny Rzeznik, Natasha Bedingfield, Ne-Yo, The Fray, Venus Williams, Tamia and 3 Doors Down. NATIONAL OVERVIEW A vast body of scientific research shows that children who study a musical instrument experience greater success in all of their studies, exhibit better ability to work in teams, have enhanced creative and critical thinking skills, and are more likely to stay in school and graduate from college. As American students prepare to compete in a global workplace, the ability to think creatively will be a crucial component in determining their success. In fact, a recent Conference Board Report revealed that 74 percent of employers agree that creativity is increasingly important in U.S. workplaces. In addition, teamwork and critical thinking ranked in the five most important skills for new workforce entrants. Yet more than half of these employers stated that entrants exhibited deficiencies in these skills. Ensuring that students have the opportunity to study a musical instrument can help resolve this deficit. Ironically, as other nations have looked to the United States’ education system as a model and are including arts education in their curricula, many American schools are cutting these same programs. Without music programs in our public schools our children and our country are weakened. For over a decade, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has worked to provide the resources to foster the skills needed for our children to maintain our country’s competitive edge.

HOW VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC FOUNDATION WORKS VH1 Save The Music develops long-term, sustainable instrumental music programs that provide children with equal access to music education regardless of their financial situation. Through strategic partnerships with school districts, the Foundation provides brand-new musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools, jumpstarting dormant music programs across the country. The school districts commit to funding certified music teachers’ salaries, providing maintenance and supplies, and scheduling instrumental music classes during the school day; the Foundation maintains a partnership with the district until instrumental music is in place in every school. VH1 Save The Music raises approximately $30,000 for the purchase of new, high-quality musical instruments for each grant-recipient school. A school can choose a package of band or string instruments, a keyboard lab, a guitar lab, or mariachi instruments. As part of the Foundation’s community-based focus, the instruments are purchased through local music retailers who are members of NAMM, the International Music Products Association. NAMM affiliates generously provide discounted rates to help further the Foundation’s cause. Since its establishment in 1997, the Foundation has provided more than $43 million worth of new musical instruments to more than 1,600 public schools in more than 100 cities, affecting the lives of more than 1.2 million children. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and sustaining instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as a part of each child’s complete education.

HOUSTON, TX VH1 Save The Music Foundation, Comcast, and Yamaha have proudly partnered with Houston Independent School District (HISD) in their effort to restore music education in their schools. Since 2000, the Foundation and Comcast have been providing instruments to children in Houston’s schools and in 2006, the district created a strategic arts plan that would bring music education programs to every school. Yamaha’s participation in the initiative has provided the partnership with even more resources, and with the help of the Music & Arts Center and Lisle Violin Shop, the Foundation is able to give instruments to 15 schools in the district each year. The groundswell of support and excitement for music education in Houston has prompted the district to provide additional funds for the program. The work of the Foundation and our partners is producing exciting results in Houston! BALTIMORE, MD Former Baltimore mayor and Maryland’s current governor, Martin O’Malley, championed the cause of restoring music education in Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) by issuing a challenge to the philanthropic community to match funds raised by VH1 Save The Music Foundation. This initial challenge was met with enthusiasm and since then, VH1 Save The Music has worked with BCPS to donate $2,355,000 worth of new musical instruments, helping to restore instrumental music in 92 schools. While there are still schools in Baltimore without music education, VH1 Save The Music and BCPS are committed to continuing their efforts until all children in BCPS have access to music education.
CLARK, NJ Inspired by the successful partnership between New Brunswick Public Schools and VH1 Save The Music Foundation, Clark Public Schools approached the Foundation in 2008. Together they set a goal of restoring instrumental music education in the two elementary and one middle school in the district, thereby rebuilding the long-missing feeder program for their high school band. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation was thrilled to provide the instruments for these schools and looks forward to following the many upcoming successes in Clark Public Schools thanks to the Paul Singer Family Foundation! MINNEAPOLIS, MN In 2005, VH1 Save The Music Foundation and Comcast began a partnership with Minneapolis Public Schools and provided a grant of band instruments to one school in the district. Since this initial donation, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has enhanced its efforts and fostered a multi-year rebuild of instrumental music programs in Minneapolis. Seven grants have been awarded to date, and with steady granting each year, all Minneapolis Public School students will soon have access to instrumental music education. ST. LOUIS, MO In 1999, all public middle and high schools in the St. Louis Public School (SLPS) system had instrumental music education programs, but none of the elementary schools had such programs. SLPS began working with VH1 Save The Music Foundation, media partner Charter Communications, and SoundTree (the education division of Korg USA) in an effort to provide all elementary students access to music education. The result of this ongoing partnership has provided nearly every elementary school in the district with a state-of-the-art keyboard lab.

To make a difference in the life of a single child, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation must work at the local, state and national level. This requires energetic advocacy strategies: working with community, government and school district decision makers from the outset of a project, then seeing it through to completion.

LOCAL EFFORTS Advocacy efforts are only truly effective if the result of the work is sustainable. The local efforts of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation focus on ensuring that comprehensive music education will be available for all children for the long term. The process begins with research: Foundation representatives find not only the school districts that do not have instrumental music available, but also the districts where school administrators are ready to support new music programs. During an initial meeting, school administrators outline their needs and learn about the success of districts with similar financial circumstances. The Foundation raises and then offers to grant approximately $30,000 worth of new instruments to every school that does not have an instrumental music program; in turn, the district must commit to providing qualified music teachers and scheduling music classes during the school day. Together, the Foundation and the administrators develop a multiyear plan to restore instrumental music to every school in the district. Instruments are ordered from a local music retailer to begin the new program and the school district hires a certified music teacher to instruct the program. Sponsors, local community organizations, government representatives and school-district officials attend celebratory events, often launched in partnership with area businesses and arts organizations. Local foundations, corporate sponsors and partners and individual donors offer financial support, the local cable system airs public service announcements about the importance of music education, and the press follows the program closely, detailing its progress and effects on the community. Because community members are far more likely to feel invested in programs that they have helped to build, the Foundation seeks a broad range of local involvement. This multipronged outreach is what makes the programs sustainable. Following this model, to date the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has restored music programs in more than 1,600 schools in more than 100 communities.
NATIONAL EFFORTS The conversations that take place while advocating in local communities prove most effective when decision makers, community members, stakeholders and funders are already familiar with the importance of music education. For this reason, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation employs a number of strategies on a national scale to lay the groundwork for successful local advocacy. Conferences: The VH1 Save The Music Foundation targets school leader conferences to spread the word about the vital need for music education. Each year, school administrators gather to share information that will enable them to make important decisions about the curricula in their schools. Both the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and the National School Boards Association (NSBA) have granted the Foundation and other music-education advocates a section of their convention spaces–special pavilions devoted to spreading the word about the importance of music education. Since 2005, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has been joined by instrument manufacturers, retailers and the SupportMusic.com coalition in the music pavilions. Honors: In addition to providing workshops on the benefits of music education at the AASA, NSBA and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development conferences, the Foundation honors–in front of thousands of school board members and administrators from around the country– school-district officials who have been supportive of music education. In 2008, the School Board for New Brunswick Public Schools and Richard Kaplan, Superintendent of New Brunswick Public Schools, were recognized with the VH1 Save The Music Foundation Award for Distinguished Support of Music Education. Over three short years, they were able to restore music education to all New Brunswick schools. Congratulations New Brunswick, NJ! VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC FOUNDATION 21
