Dear Supporter of Music Education, It is our pleasure to share with you VH1 Save The Music Foundation’s 2009 Annual Report! This past year wasn’t an easy one, as people all over the world faced crippling challenges from the global economic recession. The impact has been deep, widespread, and touched every family, community and many noteworthy organizations. With ongoing support from our dedicated supporters – individuals, organizations, corporate and nonprofit partners, artists and foundations, VH1 Save The Music has continued on our march to ensure that all students in America’s public schools are prepared to deal with the challenges ahead. We are proud to report that this past year, over 70 schools in nearly 20 communities across the nation stepped up by partnering with VH1 Save The Music to give their students access to a well-rounded education that includes instrumental music study. tom calderone The American public-education system was once envied by the world for its equitable access and comprehensive education for all students. Increasing budget cuts have forced schools to narrow the curriculum, often cutting music and arts education programs. As a nation, in order to compete in an increasingly competitive global workforce, we must continue to fight for music education to help our students develop the skills necessary to succeed. Students who study a musical instrument learn to think creatively and critically, develop discipline and teamwork, and also have improved performance in other subjects. As the Foundation completes its 12th year, we are proud to have raised, and in turn donated, $45 million worth of new musical instruments to 1,700 schools, impacting the lives of over 1.4 million students. Even with this great progress, there is still a tremendous need and much work to be done. Our energized staff works closely with school administrators to create sustainable music education programs in all our partner school districts. paul cothran Thank you for your steadfast support this year and in the coming years. Please follow our activities on our website at vh1savethemusic.com, as well as on Facebook and Twitter. Invite your friends and family to join you in being proactive on behalf of music education, so all children can achieve their dreams and realize their full potential.

Sincerely,

Tom Calderone Chairman

Paul Cothran Executive Director/Vice President

National Overview A vast body of scientific research shows that children who study a musical instrument experience greater success in all of their studies, exhibit better ability to work in teams, have enhanced creative and critical thinking skills, and are more likely to stay in school and graduate from college.

As American students prepare to compete in a global workplace, the ability to think creatively is a crucial component in determining their success. In fact, a recent Conference Board Report revealed that 74 percent of employers agree that creativity is increasingly important in U.S. workplaces. In addition, teamwork and critical thinking ranked in the five most important skills for new workforce entrants. Yet more than half of these employers stated that entrants exhibited deficiencies in these skills. Ensuring that students have the opportunity to study a musical instrument can help resolve this deficit. Ironically, as other nations have looked to the United States education system as a model, and are including arts education in their curricula, many American schools are cutting these same programs. Without music programs in our public schools our children and our country are weakened. For over a decade, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has worked to provide resources to foster the skills needed for our children to maintain a competitive edge.

How the VH1 Save The Music Foundation Works

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation develops long-term sustainable instrumental music programs that provide children with equal access to music education, regardless of their financial situation. Through strategic partnerships with school districts, the Foundation provides brand-new musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools, jumpstarting dormant music programs across the country. The school districts commit to funding certified music teachers’ salaries, providing maintenance and supplies, and scheduling instrumental music classes during the school day. The Foundation maintains a partnership with the district until instrumental music programs are in place in every school.

VH1 Save The Music fundraises each year to purchase and donate $30,000 of new, high-quality instruments for each grant-recipient school. A school can choose a package of band or string instruments, a keyboard lab, a guitar lab, or mariachi instruments. As part of the Foundation’s communitybased focus, the instruments are purchased through local music retailers that are members of NAMM, the International Music Products Association. NAMM affiliates generously provide discounted rates to help further the Foundation’s cause. Since its establishment in 1997, the Foundation has provided $45 million worth of new musical instruments to 1,700 public schools in more than 100 cities, affecting the lives of more than 1.4 million children. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and sustaining instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as a part of each child’s complete education.

Here are just a few examples of the 1.4 million students nationwide who now have access to learning a musical instrument through a VH1 Save The Music Foundation grant. The following stories illustrate the impact these opportunities have had for students in cities across America. Minneapolis, MN Eliz abeth Hall International Elementary School

In 2005, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation and Comcast began a partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools, with the common goal of restoring instrumental music education to all elementary and middle schools district-wide. Each grant from the Foundation helps sustain music programs, with rewards seen years after the initial grant is given. The story of Sarah Nelson*, a fifth grader at Elizabeth Hall International Elementary School, is particularly illustrative of the impact music has on a child’s life. Sarah has been moved from household to household and lives below the poverty level. In the midst of these challenges, the Foundation has helped provide Sarah the ability to pursue her love of the saxophone, furnishing her with an instrument to take home and practice every night. With daily practice, Sarah has developed into a fine student musician and her excitement for band class motivates her to work hard in all of her academic subjects. The music teacher at Elizabeth Hall International Elementary School has seen firsthand how much the grant from the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has impacted his students: “Sarah is just one of many successes. I know the band is enriching their lives and having a profound impact.”

New York, NY The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem

New Haven, CT Truman Street School

In 2006, The VH1 Save The Music Foundation gave a grant of band instruments to the Truman Street School in New Haven, CT. Participating students have shown signs of tremendous growth, both socially and academically. Seventh grader Matthew Garcia*, for example, plays percussion in the school’s music program. Matthew was a struggling reader, but has shown incredible improvement in his reading test scores since joining the band. While many of his peers have confronted issues of delinquency, Matthew has avoided trouble and is enthusiastic about staying in the music program. Tyler Gibbons*, another 7th grader, entered the school year with major issues managing his temper. Like Matthew, he also took up percussion and has transformed his attitude. He is now one of the strongest leaders in the band, well-liked and respected by his teachers and peers.

vh1savethemusic.com

Since 1997, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has donated musical instruments to over 250 schools in the New York City Public School system. In 2003, with local cable affiliate partner Time Warner Cable, we provided string instruments to The Young Women’s Leadership School. The music teacher at this school has seen one student in particular grow through her participation in the music program. Jennifer Young* is a junior at The Young Women’s Leadership School. She has been playing the viola since she was a 7th grader. Jennifer was extremely quiet and shy. Since joining the orchestra, she has completely come out of her shell. She has joined the band, learned to play the guitar, performed in the school talent show, and played a solo with the orchestra. She has expressed that because of the music program, she has become the person she is today.

Houston, TX Cage Elementary School

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation, Comcast and Yamaha have partnered with The Houston Independent School District (HISD) in an effort to restore music education in all of the schools. To date, the Foundation has provided new musical instruments to 40 schools in Houston. The Foundation provided a grant to Cage Elementary School in 2007 and the positive impact of the new instrumental music program is reflected in students like 5th grader Gabriel Sanchez*. Gabriel was a timid student who had trouble fitting in with his peers and lacked self-confidence. When given the opportunity to study the trumpet, he truly blossomed. With determination and independent practice at home, he became leader of the trumpet section in the school band. Through the opportunity to study music, Gabriel found the path to self-confidence and leadership that will serve him throughout his life.

* Students’ names have been changed.

To make a difference in the life of a single child, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation must work at the local, state and national level. This requires energetic advocacy strategies: working with community, government and school-district decision makers from the outset of a project, then seeing it through to completion.

10

Local Efforts Advocacy efforts are only truly effective if the result of the work is sustainable. The local efforts of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation focus on ensuring that comprehensive music education is available for all children for the long term.

The process begins with research; Foundation representatives find not only the school districts that do not have instrumental music available, but also the districts where school administrators are ready to support new music programs. During an initial meeting, school administrators outline their needs and learn about the successes of districts with similar financial circumstances. The Foundation then offers to grant approximately $30,000 worth of new instruments to every school that does not have an instrumental music program; in turn, the district must commit to providing qualified music teachers and scheduling music classes during the school day. Together, the Foundation and the school administrators develop a multi-year plan to restore instrumental music to every school in the district. Because community members are far more likely to feel invested in programs that they have helped to build, the Foundation seeks a broad range of local involvement. Instruments are ordered from a local music retailer to begin the new program and the school district hires a certified music teacher to instruct the program. Sponsors, local community organizations, government representatives, and school-district officials attend celebratory events, often launched in partnership with area businesses and arts organizations. Local foundations, corporate sponsors and partners, and individual donors offer financial support, the local cable system airs public-service announcements about the importance of music education, and the press follows the program closely, detailing its progress and effects on the community. This multipronged outreach creates sustainable programs.

National Efforts The conversations that take place while advocating in local communities prove most effective when decision makers, community members, stakeholders, and funders are already familiar with the importance of music education. For this reason, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation employs a number of strategies on a national scale to lay the groundwork for successful local advocacy.

school leaders The Foundation targets school leader conferences to spread the word about the vital need for music education. Each year, school administrators gather to share information that will enable them to make important decisions about the curriculum in their schools. Both the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and the National School Boards Association (NSBA) have granted the Foundation and other music-education advocates a section of their convention spaces to be used as special pavilions, devoted to spreading the word about the importance of music education. Since 2005, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has been joined by instrument manufacturers, retailers and the SupportMusic.com coalition in the music pavilions. Honors In addition to providing workshops on the benefits of music education at the AASA, NSBA, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development conferences, the Foundation honors – in front of thousands of school board members and administrators from around the country – those school district officials who have been supportive of music education. Advocacy Toolkit The Foundation has developed a toolkit for community members, teachers and administrators who need resources for local arts education advocacy efforts. The Advocacy Toolkit, a one-stopshop for music advocates to build their case in supporting music education, is available on the Foundation’s website, vh1savethemusic.com.

Contributed Revenues & Expenses

Like many nonprofits, the deepening global economic crisis presented daunting challenges for VH1 Save The Music in reaching its financial goals in 2008. The Foundation responded by reducing expenses as much as possible, but it was necessary to use cash reserves to maintain operations and programmatic activities. The Foundation is committed to strengthening its programs and rebuilding its reserves as quickly as possible. In fiscal years 2007 and 2008, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation's financial activity demonstrates the Foundation's commitment to restoring instrumental music programs in U.S. public schools, as well as the importance of our many funding partners.
