About the Kitchen
Photo by Sarah Crowder, Ladue News
The homeowners’ plan of revamping their kitchen was nothing short of a success as they aimed to create a welcoming space with a look of casual elegance. One of the most notable layout changes was the removal of the original wall and doorway into the dining and living rooms, transforming the first floor to an open layout. A ceiling beam originally divided the kitchen area from the dinette area and it was removed to create an even more open feel. The cooktop was moved from the island to the back wall, creating a focal point and allowing more space on the island. The large island is now ideal for food prep, buffet set-up, or simply sharing a glass of wine with friends. The newly installed 48’’gas Wolf Rangetop, with a griddle and charbroiler, and the 48’’ hood ventilation system combine to be a functional showstopper — perfect for every chef! The kitchen highlights include beautiful absolute black granite countertops contrasting with the white painted cabinetry, beveled Carrera marble subway tiles positioned as the backsplash with a herringbone pattern over the Wolf Rangetop, and maple hardwood floors. Additional features include a Blanco black composite sink with Delta Touch2O technology faucet and Kitchen Aid Architect Series appliances (refrigerator, double ovens with warming drawing, dishwasher, and built-in microwave). This renovated kitchen features a friendly, accessible layout with additional storage space. Playing off the classic selections in this kitchen, I.O. Metro enhanced the classic feel with rich silver, ebony, and pops of color. A cheery citrine yellow accents the already sunny area. A livable formality shows in the dining table, chairs, and server, brought to life by a dynamic piece of art. This kitchen presents a timeless look that will be the stunning centerpiece of the home for years to come.

About the Kitchen This historical charmer has sat gracefully on this recognizable St. Louis street for over 95 years. The kitchen was not quite as graceful, however, and did not fit the needs of this young family. It had been updated in the 70’s and still remained broken into two separate spaces; a tiny kitchen and an even tinier breakfast room. The goal for the space was to attempt to design an eat-in island and open up the kitchen to the family room so that the two spaces would feel more like one large, open space. The wall between the two was removed, quite painstakingly as it held quite a bit of the second floor plumbing. The family room door was enlarged to become a graceful arch. This opened up the space and allowed for a spacious island large enough for the family of five to eat around. Some drama was added with the addition of the box beam ceiling and arched opening to the family room making the two rooms cozy and quite family friendly. Inset creamy white cabinets, Danby marble counter tops, and the small touches in the detail of the hardware and lighting choices are what make this a small but mighty space.

About the Kitchen
Photo by Jeff Borts, Denash Photography
This house is famous, having been featured on Real Life Renovations, a local prime time television show on KMOV. The show documented the rehab process of the kitchen and master bath from start to finish. The homeowners were so eager to start the renovation project that they tore the kitchen out prior to even having plans in place for the new kitchen. The dated 80’s kitchen was renovated in keeping with the architectural style of the home and to meet the needs of the busy family with two very small children. The kitchen is visible from the street and is also one of the first things guests see when they come in the front door, so it was important to make a good first impression and tell an accurate story of both the home and the homeowners. When the homeowners met with Wendy, their designer from Karr Bick, they gave her two goals. First, the homeowners, who love to entertain friends and family, wanted a functional kitchen where guests could comfortably gather in one area of the kitchen without having to enter the kitchen workspace. The gorgeous built-in hutch, with antique mirror glass backsplash, achieves this goal. It houses all of the glassware, an ice machine, and a beverage fridge as well as a trash and recycling receptacle. The homeowners also wanted to incorporate the chicken pitchers they collected from their travels to different towns and villages in Italy. These pitchers are prominently featured and highlighted in cabinets throughout the kitchen. This cabinetry is exploding with detail and contains an eye-catching mix of color and texture. The color pallet in the kitchen is subdued so as to highlight the cabinetry treatments. In addition to renovating the kitchen, the master bath also underwent a dramatic transformation. After touring this fabulous kitchen, be sure to visit the master bath and see the rest of the “real life renovation”!

About the Kitchen What better way to take a vacation than every day in your own backyard? The homeowners always wanted a pool and were so excited that they were swimming as soon as the pool had water, even during construction! The pool house includes a kitchen and bath to make it easy to have lunch and drinks poolside and provides a dedicated space for outdoor entertaining. The homeowners can relax and enjoy the company of their guests rather than spending time running back and forth to the main house. One of the biggest drivers for the pool house was the windows that separate the sink from the built-in counter. The homeowners were adamant that the windows needed to completely disappear in the summer, meaning no track left on the countertop. This became a particular challenge for the builder, who figured out an ingenious way to meet the homeowners’ needs. The result is both beautiful and incredibly functional—not to mention quite the party trick! Designing a pool house allowed the homeowners to be bold in the materials used and to explore the fun side of their personalities. This pool house features a color pallet that conveys beach and summer fun, but fall and spring colors can be easily incorporated since the homeowners enjoy entertaining friends and family regardless of the season. The pool has fountains and lights up blue in the evening, contributing to the character of the space. Large patios provide flexibility for entertaining, and a beautiful outdoor fireplace with a gracious sloping chimney adds the perfect touch to this outdoor oasis!

About the Kitchen This beautiful kitchen renovation, completed by Mike Beck of Beck/Allen Cabinetry and interior designer Nancy Spewak of Nancy Spewak Designs, began with the homeowner’s desire for a more connected space, to include an island for gathering and a table for dining. The original space was isolating, with the kitchen separated from both the breakfast area and the great room. The wall between the kitchen and breakfast room was removed as well as the wall between the breakfast room and family room. The result is a large, open area, accented by nine plus foot ceilings. The new design is ideal for both serious cooks and informal entertaining. Perhaps the most striking feature of the kitchen is a custom horseshoe-shaped island, which serves a dual purpose—as a work area next to the range and a breakfast spot with seating for two. The finished design also includes custom cherry cabinets, glass cabinets with mullion doors, designer appliances, pull-out pantries, made-to-order hardware, double-edged granite countertops, a honed Anamite marble backsplash, a beveled arabesque tile by Ken Mason featured above a 48” Wolf range, and thoughtful storage solutions. Ample dining space and a wine bar with mullion doors, a wine refrigerator, and an icemaker make this a perfect place to entertain. The renovated great room, a mudroom featuring cabinets similar to those in the kitchen, and a bathroom off the mudroom complete this stunning home renovation.

About the Kitchen This two-story home built in 1949 originally had all bedrooms on its 1,180 square foot second floor. As the original owners aged and could no longer negotiate the stairs to the master bedroom, they built a 730 square foot addition onto the back of the home. The addition housed a master bedroom, laundry room, and breakfast area and brought the first floor total to 2,030 square feet. Because the home was load-bearing masonry, the original owners limited circulation into the addition through existing openings. The home was a maze of connecting rooms with no flow. The kitchen was 10’x10’, had three doors providing entry to the kitchen, and only six linear feet of counter space. None of the home’s finishes had been touched since the 1980 addition. In late 2012, the current owners completed an entire renovation of the home with the goal of creating an open floor plan that would be inviting and conducive to entertaining, something these homeowners enjoy. The home’s circulation now flows around the original beautiful semicircular wood staircase. A 17’ steel beam was added to open the kitchen to the back of the house and the new family room. The centerpiece of the kitchen is a large island that seats five. The cabinets are a shaker style with simple contemporary lines. This kitchen also features top-ofthe-line stainless steel appliances, including a double oven, warming drawer, and under-the-counter microwave drawer. The kitchen renovation created four times the original counter space and three times the original storage capacity. The result is an inviting gathering place to welcome friends and family.
