Spring has sprung, not only in St. Louis, but at Junior League of St. Louis. This time of year, we look forward to Home Design Tour, one of our biggest fundraisers. Our annual fundraisers include not only HDT, but also our delicious Cinnamon Rolls, our cookbook and newly re-established boutique, and support all of our training and community programs. I want to personally thank the nine homeowners who have graciously opened their homes to us. These homes always leave us feeling inspired! JLSL has a long history of making life better for women and children in the greater St. Louis area through our community programs. In 2016, we adopted a new issue area to concentrate our efforts on for the next five years: Infant mortality. Many Americans are unaware that more babies die in the US prior to their first birthdays than in any of the other 27 wealthiest nations in the world. And our infant mortality rate in Missouri is the 19th-worst in the U.S., with 6.6 babies dying in their first year of life per 1,000 babies born. Our membership has thrown itself into Day 366: Helping our smallest thrive in the first year and beyond, as our members have collected more than 10,000 baby items, including diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, and bottles. How do these items help save the five babies who die before their first birthdays, 32 babies who are born too small, and 46 babies who are born too early each day in the St. Louis metro area? When moms can’t provide these basics for their babies, it produces toxic stress, which is harmful to both Mom and Baby. Distributing these items through three of our community partners helped relieve that toxic stress for families. We also know that access to quality prenatal care is key to improving our area’s infant mortality rate, and we have partnered with the March of Dimes annual March for Babies. On April 29, JLSL will have a tent in the Upper Muny parking lot to collect even more necessities. If you’d like to donate, we will be happy to see you that day, or you can drop off donations of diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream and bottles at JLSL Headquarters (106 N. Kirkwood Rd.) from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. We are women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Junior League of St. Louis would not be possible without the assistance from our community. Thank you for supporting us through our fundraisers – the ticket you buy for HDT allows us to continue our mission. Gratefully,

Amy Mayfield, president 2016-18

The Junior League of St. Louis (JLSL) partners with community agencies that reflect our mission, vision, and values. Focused on improving the health, education, and welfare of women and children, the JLSL provides much-needed volunteer resources and serves as a catalyst for positive change through our partnerships. The JLSL demonstrates its giving through monetary and volunteer means. 

More than $4 million has been awarded to area nonprofit agencies since the JLSL’s founding in 1914.

JLSL financially supports select JLSL programs that complement JLSL priorities.

Members give in excess of 10,000 volunteer hours each year through community organizations providing direct services to those in need.

The JLSL prepares members for civic leadership. Since our inception, JLSL members have served on numerous nonprofit boards, chaired community-wide events and pursued public office.

Day 366 Traditionally, Junior League of St. Louis has focused its annual volunteer efforts on a project or event intended to help the lives of women and children in the greater St. Louis area. In 2016, we voted to adopt an issue area of infant mortality, and concentrate our time and energy on reducing the infant mortality rate in the greater St. Louis metro area through our Day 366 initiative. Done-In-A-Day This program provides trained volunteers in response to requests from community agencies. DIAD offers frequent, flexible, “hands on,” volunteer opportunities that can be completed in one day. Kids in the Kitchen KITK is a national program established by the Association of Junior Leagues International to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. It provides a forum for educational information and demonstrations, such as the preparation of nutritious meals. League Larks and Nightingales JLSL choral groups provide live entertainment that offers music therapy stimulation and an audience participation experience to nursing home residents, retirement centers, adult day care, and rehabilitation facilities throughout the St. Louis area. State Legislative Issues Members research public issues, determine JLSL advocacy efforts, and provide advocacy training to JLSL members. Annually, JLSL members attend the A Day at the Capitol event. In recent years, the JLSL has worked with local legislators to combat cyberbullying amongst school-aged children. Strong Women & Families Health & Resource Fair Partnering with Grace Hill and Affinia Health, this one-day event brings together a dynamic group of agencies that provide services in preventative healthcare, finance, career, children/family, and legal to low-income women and their families.

The lower level takes entertainment to the next level with a game room, media room, cedar room, and wet bar with 1,000-bottle capacity and a temperature-controlled wine cellar. There is a walkout for entertaining at the pool with a stone water feature, patio and private Hot Springs spa sunken into a stone pit. Maximalism is definitely the name of the game here, and this house was meant for this owner. The hot pink ceiling in the dining room – original to the room – fits her “think pink” design sensibility perfectly. Further, the lavish Chinoiserie window treatments in the dining room were fortuitous, as the owner, a former shoe designer, began collecting Asian-motif trinkets on her business travels to Taiwan and China. Her collecting mushroomed to include Staffordshire dogs, Foo Dogs and dogs of every sort, green Majolica plates, porcelain birds, Murano glass, Italian leopards and lions, and Chinese deities. Today, the owner dabbles in antique dealing, and many of the unusual pieces on display were found through local treasure hunting. Books are very important in this household and many design volumes are available for ready reference. The needlepoint and petit point artwork scattered throughout was done by the owner’s father, who could take up to a year to complete large pieces. Tony Duquette’s fantastical style featured in More is More inspired the main level. Downstairs is a different world; it is a masculine Zen zone dedicated to college sports and golf. For the custom remodel of the lower level, the man of the house decreed that the exotic decorating of the main level would not invade his "man-apartment;” instead, manly rugged, natural treatments would rule. A two-way fireplace has stone surrounds at both ends. The stone-paved bar acts as a wine room on occasion or as a “party central.” Heavy ceiling beams add a cozy charm, as does the rustic flagstone flooring. The handmade antler chandelier in the poker room was discovered at a Central West End antique store and the iron chandelier over the octagonal ottoman came from a home in Clayton. Outside, a flagstone patio surrounds a pond and a landscaped waterfall descending from a large, natural earthen mound topped by a huge oak tree. The patio is a relaxing spot to listen to the soothing sound of the waterfall or catch a Cardinal game on the outdoor television.

This is just the start of the detail throughout this expansive 10,000-square foot home. The first floor is an entertainer’s dream, as the kitchen, family room, living room, bar area and porches are large, open and airy. The second floor includes Juliet balconies and gorgeous sleeping quarters for children and guests. The entertaining continues in the basement, which is equipped with a children’s secret playroom, game room, bar and wine collection. Be sure to look closely at the fine and personal millwork details on the bar that tie into the owner’s Irish heritage. Do not miss details of this home, including the television hidden behind a faux painting, the screened porch panels that hide when not in use, and the splendid lighting in each and every room. The homeowner had much fun making decorating choices with her daughter, an interior designer.

This house was inspired and designed in mid-century style. The owner sourced antique pieces to restore and use as everyday storage or display. The family, dining and living room cabinets were constructed and installed in 2015, and the owner selected walnut veneers with a custom stain finish. The design intent was to create asymmetrical balance while maximizing storage space for a large collection of books and vinyl albums. The fireplace is clad with walnut panels on the face and sides, with stone on the face only. The oak flooring is original and refinished. The wood window frames were stripped and refinished to match the flooring. The custom-made draperies were created with the midcentury aesthetic in mind. The kitchen was completed at the end of 2016. The kitchen cabinetry was built with maple veneers with a custom stain finish. The owner sourced vintage cabinets and decorative hardware from an antique store in Kansas City and incorporated them into her new kitchen and laundry room. The vintage cabinets were modified slightly and restored to their original shade of blue. The stainless-steel countertops, shelves and other accents were custom made by Missouri Equipment. The laminate countertops, flooring, wall tile and lighting were selected by the homeowner to help achieve the finished look.

Nestled in Clayton, this beautiful home gives the experience of walking through an art gallery. "You just can't be in a bad mood in here," said the owner, who has decorated her historic home in Clayton with the intent of showcasing her loves of color and art. The 112-year old home features six bedrooms, six bathrooms, four gas fireplaces and beautiful accents throughout. Each room showcases bright, inviting colors, artwork by local and national artists and decorative elements, including stained glass windows and doors.

Outside also stuns with a beautiful large wraparound porch and backyard retreat made for relaxing.

Built in 1928, 7339 Teasdale Avenue was first owned by Arthur and Elizabeth Siegal. Arthur worked in advertising and was one of the founders of the Municipal Opera. This modest home is located in the gorgeous tree-lined University Hills neighborhood and was carefully restored to its original glory over a period of four years. Tasteful modern updates, including a newly industrial-styled finished basement, complete the home. DÊcor is transitional and eclectic – a mixture of old, new and refurbished. Every light fixture in the home was replaced, while each door was carefully stripped of many years of paint and refinished with a gorgeous and modern dark walnut stain. Original wood floors were refinished throughout the home, including in the kitchen, where the original pine was hidden under many layers of flooring. The elimination of the original pantry highlights the kitchen remodel, as it dramatically improved the space and functionality of the room. A new marble backsplash, granite countertops and under-cabinet lighting were also installed. Bathrooms retain their original vitrolite and naturally crazed subway wall tile. The bathroom fixtures and flooring were updated to period-appropriate lighting and white marble floors. An unusable elevator, which had been installed in the fifties, was removed and replaced with a washer and dryer on the second floor and a pantry on the first floor. The backyard also underwent a major transformation from forest to backyard retreat. Several large trees were cut down and replaced with grass. The deck was rebuilt at the same level as the dining room so that its original French doors open onto what has become an extension of the home’s interior living space. A hidden sunken patio was uncovered and restored using the original and reclaimed brick. Old timbers were replaced with a new retaining wall and natural stone gas fire pit.

Acid-staining the newly poured concrete floor, leaving exposed the new copper pipes, and painting the ceiling beams make the new living space in the finished basement feel modern while offering a nod to the past in the use of the original building materials. A gorgeous marble and concrete guest bath with a walk-in shower completes the multifunctional lower level, which includes an office, playroom/ guest suite, and laundry/storage area.

The homeowners wanted to create a space of casual elegance, with a home dressy enough for entertaining, but designed for everyday living. The round entry table with the mirrored top casts light from the constellation chandelier while the tribal print vinyl area rug adds drama to the floor and pairs well with the African wood wall panel and African mask collection. The colorful abstract art gives the neutral walls depth and interest. A lighted wood cove ceiling, wainscoting and built-in bookcases are key to the lounge, though the walls were painted golden mustard yellow. The fretwork design balances the oversized ottoman upholstered in a pale yellow zebra striped fabric, which is perfect for guests to enjoy conversation. The vintage bar cart is ready for cocktails, while the smoke gray velvet sofa is outfitted with a single custom pillow for a tailored look. The golden velvet tufted sofa is the statement piece in this living space, and is outfitted with blue and sunset yellow pillows to compliment the slate blue velvet armchairs. Vintage pieces, including the brass console table and touchier lamp, add to the easy elegance. Antique chess sets are displayed in the glass curio cabinet. For a little extra drama, custom-upholstered ottomans are placed behind the sofa and can be pulled into the room for extra seating. The multi-colored wool rug brings together all the elements in this family room, and the large mint sofa with extra deep seating is perfect for seating multiple people or a solo afternoon nap. Two small end tables, used in place of a coffee table, double as extra seating. Black metal finish bookcases flanking the media console are accessorized with family treasures. The contemporary brass chandelier punctuates this room perfectly.

Designed in 1895 by noted architectural firm Barnett Haynes and Barnett (Cathedral Basilica), this Second Renaissance Revival features classic Beaux Arts detailing. The exterior is handcarved limestone with a cupid theme in the details, accenting the oversized windows throughout the home. The grand hall features a fireplace, terrazzo floors and a staircase. The large living room has a fireplace and original walnut floors. The first floor study features another fireplace and a Schonbek crystal chandelier. The dining room has a third fireplace, which features a surround designed with the original built-in china cabinets with leaded glass doors. A three-season sitting room is located just off the dining room. The second floor includes a large master suite with sitting room, three additional bedrooms and two additional baths. The third floor has two bedrooms, full bath, service kitchen and both a ballroom and a billiard room. The three-bay carriage house also has a two-bedroom apartment – and you don’t want to miss the swimming pool.
