PRESIDENT’S LETTER

At the recent Strong Women & Families Health & Resource Fair, put on by the JLSL in partnership with Grace Hill, a young pregnant woman seeking prenatal care discovered she had diabetes and was able to get treatment. During the 2013-2014 year, the JLSL choral groups – League Larks and Nightingales, have performed at over 45 locations, bringing musical enjoyment to hundreds of disadvantaged seniors. Many of the places where they perform have no budget for this type of programming and the Larks and Nightingales provide a valuable service to these facilities and seniors. In its most recent season, the St. Louis Family Theatre Series, a perpetual project of the JLSL, provided a live theatre experience to over 25,000 school children in St. Louis. The above instances are just a few examples of the outreach and impact that members of the Junior League of St. Louis are making in our community. Your support of A Gathering Place Kitchen Tour is a key component of funding the mission of the JLSL to develop women as civic leaders. Please take the time to enjoy yourself today as you stroll through some of the most beautiful kitchens in St. Louis. Allow yourself to dream about your own kitchen remodel. As you do so, remember that in taking part in today’s Tour, you are allowing the JLSL to make a difference in our community. Thank you for your support!

100 Shady Valley Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017 About the Kitchen

A

By Emily Faber

A collaboration between local interior designer Julie Abner and Beck/Allen Cabinetry’s Joseph Kunz resulted in an ideal kitchen for a family with an active lifestyle and a love of entertaining. The home’s open floor plan called for a cohesive design; elements of the kitchen had to blend seamlessly with adjacent rooms while reflecting the homeowner’s modern aesthetic. They were drawn to European-inspired design details, selecting minimalist slab doors in a subdued palette with a subtle, textured strié effect. Taking cues from contemporary storage solutions, Joseph suggested a pair of stainless tambour units, which have become the homeowners favorite. Finishing touches within the space included the island’s custom stainless countertop and an edgy, yet organic backsplash tile from Ann Sacks.

The biggest change in this kitchen was the configuration. There was a bathroom and bar "room" in the center of the space; the kitchen was extremely small. The way it’s open now, to the family room, makes it a wonderful living space. I love the textures and mix of stone and wood, we have had a great response to the warmth of this space. This particular homeowner is a friend I have known since I was about eight, basically that means he felt quite comfortable with honesty in terms of what he liked and didn't like! Luckily he loved it in the end. I think the part he enjoyed most was working with me, I am sure he would say so himself (dearest Chuck, I hope you read this!)

The homeowner was excited about almost everything in this space! We opened the kitchen up to the living room, which drastically improved the flow and broadened the area they could live in daily. We also incorporated additional bar space for entertaining. There are also phenomenal views of the back landscape from every spot in the kitchen. For me, the focal point of the space would be the incredible wood island that, in a space that is so clean and white, adds a necessary warmth. After all was said and done, I know they love their wood top (with custom built-in cutting board) and in general the way her family can live in the space. She also loves the backsplash tile, but that's a no brainer! Photo by Jeff Borts, Denash Photography

1414 Westwind Drive, Des Peres, MO 63131 About the Kitchen

D

By Walt Alles

This twenty-two hundred square foot home was designed with numerous, enclosed rooms. All rooms had eight-foot ceilings and all bedrooms, dining room and living room had wall-to-wall carpet. The kitchen, family room and breakfast nook had tiled linoleum. The homeowners decided that the entire floor plan needed to be renovated. The original kitchen was a pink, push-button, all-electric GE design which included the GE metal cabinets. The original home owner had the cabinets painted white prior to the sale of the home. One of the large portions of the renovation was the decision of the homeowners to make the kitchen the focal point. They cook and entertain at home quite often and they wanted a large, well-lighted kitchen with ease of movement and all components accessible. The kitchen and breakfast nook became one and the original family room, which was a separate, walled room, unifies the casual dining area as the hearth room. A formal dining room is located through a barrel-vault entrance off of the kitchen. The kitchen now includes a double oven, refrigerator-freezer, dishwasher and gas range with a pot-filling faucet. A microwave oven and warming drawer are located under the center island.

The kitchen and casual dining area have a partial, raised, eleven-foot ceiling. Tray ceilings are in the formal dining room and the living room. A coffer-style ceiling is in the master bedroom. The designer, Patti Martineau of Perspective Design & Cabinetry was outstanding according to the homeowner. They shared ideas and the result was a beautiful one-of-a kind kitchen.

1224 Laclede StaƟon Road, Richmond Heights, About the Kitchen

E

By Emily Faber

When Beck/Allen Cabinetry owner Mike Beck met interior designer Mary Tramelli, she was ready for a change. The kitchen of her Richmond Heights home allowed for a minimal view of her lush backyard landscape and very little light. The adjacent breakfast room presented a possibility; open up the kitchen, the central gathering spot for friends and family, and brighten the entire space. The wall was removed and what was once a small kitchen, with only a single window above the sink, was transformed. Now four feet wide, the window is flanked with two arched side windows in a boxed bay. Shiloh cabinetry was chosen in knotty alder and topped with concrete countertops in shades of terra cotta and chocolate brown. In keeping with the home’s Mediterranean feel, Mary chose tumbled stone tiles, oil rubbed bronze fixtures and a deep farmhouse sink. The heart of her home, the kitchen now reflects Mary’s warmth as a person, her love of family and friends and a favorite destination—her beloved Italy.

81 Waterman Place, Saint Louis, MO 63112 About the Kitchen

F By Dana King

The kitchen experienced many remodels over the years and had lost its traditional roots. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt like today, yet appropriate for the turn-of-the-century home. Shaker inset style cabinetry, in the same style as the original butler pantry, set the stage. The cabinetry painted in two colors, sage for the base cabinets and cream for the upper cabinets, creates an unexpected look and contemporary flare. Drawer pulls, cup style in a more linear shape than the traditional moon shape, reads industrial chic. Lighting fixtures follow the same clean contemporary vibe of the cabinet hardware. Lighting is indeed a highlight in the kitchen. Patrons will see the lighting plan displayed in the kitchen showing the layers of lights from LED lights in the china hutch, lights in the upper frosted glass cabinets, can lights, under cabinet lights and pendants. Under-cabinet plug molding replaces outlets in the backsplash to show off the opalescent, glass backsplash tile. Be sure to ask to see the hidden microwave! Marc and Dana of NEXT Project Studio and Amish Modern cabinetry will share tips and answer questions.

27 Lenox Place, Saint Louis, MO 63108 About the Kitchen

G By Jenny Rausch

The homeowners did a pretty extensive remodel of this house. They gravitate towards spaces with function, flow and clean lines. The house was redesigned and remodeled using Feng Shui principles. Its a theory that embraces change, which is perfect for anyone thinking about embarking on a remodel. It invites you to lighten up about change, embrace it, and allow your environment to grow and move around you. The new kitchen layout is very clean, open and uncluttered. It is meant to be a clutter free zone centered around the idea of the kitchen being a nourishment center of the home. The cabinetry is also beautiful and simple with fresh finishes. The remodel took the better part of a year and included most of the rest of the house. If you ask me what they liked best about the kitchen I would say its that fact that its complete!
