These vectors can be calculated and manipulated, according to our specific target (site). The endeavor exhibition site is geometrically organized by the vectors of incoming user path, to be able to receive and re-direct movement.

aircraft + aviation educational facility savoy, illinois Capstone studio [2011] - Kennedy Hutson

A celebration of the origin and the existence of aircrafts, creating a facility as the new “home” for aviation. The primary function of the aircrafts is not limited to transportion, the transitional experience is most unique and worth grasphing. Conceptual frame work revolves around the idea of vertical elevation, there is a need for such presence on the site. The building creates a transitional sequence that enhances the user’s experience within the space. Changes in elevation, direction, exposure, and indoor/outdoor space gives the user’s a sense of exploration and adventure.

Second level corridors suspends over the courtyard, giving users a sense of floatation experience. Each particular room is planned according to the passage ways, so the user is always exposed to natural southern light as well as outdoor scenery.

A separation of space requires two different transtional sequences. Workplace requires an organized and straight forward pass, shortening the distance between each work space, maximizing flow.

Educationalal/administration part of the building is organized to have a more “playful and interactive transtional experience, giving the users a free transitional sequence while creating more opportunities for interactions and communications.

Central lobby serves as the main transtional space between the two partitions, emphasizes the idea of open space and free circulation. Such space is porous, allowing pedestrian penetration, giving the place a “weightless” feel. This common gathering area encourages the users to move through the building.

r e f l e c t i o n s mix-used mid-rise residential complex chicago ave + north lasalle, chicago, il junior studio [2011] - Kevin J. Hinders

The building represents a ladder that creates and accompanies social interactions among the near-by pedestrians, customers, and the residents. The goal is to collect and transform the interaction and communication from a horizontal level up vertically into the building itself. Thus lighting up the area with life.

Center glass peice serves as an invitation and a guide that directs people into the building, while providing a unique transition sequence from the exterior to interior space. The glass curves from the top of the building, covering the gardens, into the main entrance, and continues to flow through the floor slabs like a ribbon.

Site is located at a major intersection near downtown Los Angeles, signifying it as a prime location for future community development. Both major public transportation system (Subway and Bus) connects the city to this particular location. Period between sub-destinations often provide users with ambigous spaces, or “lost. Local area lacks green public spaces and shelters, marking this area a place of transition instead of a place of accomodation.

Surrounding infrastructures are composed of mainly commercial buildings, rendering the intersection an ideal place for consumers. There is a lack of attractions to the current programs on site, and little incentive for passer-bys to stop. Each local business is only serving to the close proximity of the neighborhood, instead of reaching out to the entire community.

Proposed design aims to provide a common place for this chaotic intersection, yet still able to reflect the surrounding existing infrastructures. Transtion of moving from a public open space to a more enclosed private space allows users to escape from the busy pedestrian traffic around the corner. Programs are elevated to provide better visual connection, leaving the ground level open for interactions and recreations.
