platform // site is treated as a flexible surface that is able to recieve and retain deformation, dense area reflects a heavier concentration of vectors impacting the surface.

target // what does combination 2 of all the path vectors look like? Specific points shows direction and force of major vectors, these are the points of arrival.

Vectors of different forces, depending on the density of people, “dents the field (site), pattern. leaving behind a visible tectonic pattern A combination of four methods of transportation (train, automobile, bus, foot) is represented, where each has their own force and direction according to analysis.

delineate // separation and delineationof the area allows designation of programs and circulation to be assigned naturally based on users’ path of travel.

3

division // there is a defined relationship between program and circulation, providing users a natural-flow experience.

4

what if our path became visible, leaving a permanent physical footprint everywhere we go? Each individual’s movement retains the quality of a vector, with direction and speed. These vectors can be calculated and manipulated, according to our specific target (site). The endeavor exhibition site is geometrically organized by the vectors of incoming user path, to be able to receive and re-direct movement.

Vectors penetrating the surface leaves behind visible traces, massing gives in and retains the aftershape created by the force. Massing is smoothed out as an expression to the invisible path vectors.

prescedent: National Library of the Czech Republic by Tom Wiscombe in Prague, 2007. project is responsive to its environment, taking in account of urban context. It creates a dynamic motion compared with the static city of Prague. The project also considers a relation between program and form.

The new addition to California Sciencenter is aimed to reflect the greatness in human technological advances and knowledge through both internal and external transition experience. Exhibition highlights the Endeavour in launch position, signifying its importance but still retains a connection with the common man. The exhibition is to accommodate incoming users by adapting to their path of travel, taking what seems to be chaotic movements and organize them within the building. Building massing and landscape is manipulated to “recieve” the incoming users, internal circulation organizes people’s path to enhance the exhibition experience.

program diagram Located in an residential neighborhood, the reservior has been closed off to the public since its deactivation, thus leaving an inconvenient gap in the area. Fenced off, an physical boundary was created, the existing band serves as the circulation, wrapped around the outter perimeter. Can we modify the existing band to bring circulation and activities to inside of the reservoir? The new Reservoir Center aims to stretch the band and penetrate through the water’s boundary, offering public spaces and allowing the users to interact with the water. Existing programs are used as the focal points, signaling an important location in respect to the reservoir. These points are then drawn towards the lake, stretching the band along with it. New platforms are created as an extension of the landscape, on top of the water, allowing pedestri ans and users to move across the void and interact with the reservoir.

r e f l e c t i o n s mix-used mid-rise residential complex chicago ave + north lasalle, chicago, il junior studio [2011] - Kevin J. Hinders

The building represents a ladder that creates and accompanies social interactions among the near-by pedestrians, customers, and the residents. The goal is to collect and transform the interaction and communication from a horizontal level up vertically into the building itself. Thus lighting up the area with life.

22

Center glass peice serves as an invitation and a guide that directs people into the building, while providing a unique transition sequence from the exterior to interior space. The glass curves from the top of the building, covering the gardens, into the main entrance, and continues to flow through the floor slabs like a ribbon.

24

a

b

c

c

Standing afar, reflection of the city can be seen from the glass peice, the user is confronted with their own reflections as they move towards the building, and eventually through the main entrance. a b
