WORKS
The Copenhagen New Modern Library competition provided by the Architecture Workshop in Rome was an extracurricular endeavour to satisfy the thirst for big picture ideas. The challenge was to determine a new model of library 2.0, while embracing the traditions and customs of the citizens of Copenhagen.

In an effort to provide spaces that complement the traditional collection of information and utilize librarians as access points to multidimensional information beyond books and databases, we began to redefine the library of the past. The library should be a diverse living being, that cross connects the community, honors tradition, cultivates the creativity of makes, and fosters the ambition of young entrepreneurs.

maker
Maker transitioning the library from a place of consumption to a place of production.
Co-Work providing equipment and offices that are to costly for individuals to own.
Community committed to developing and sustaining a healthy neighborhood. Tradition dedicated to preserving tradition, and capturing today for tomorrow.
Functionally the library was developed into 4 programmatic elements.
tradition
Traditional Jante Law You’re not to think you are anything special. You’re not to think you are as good as we are. You’re not to think you are smarter than we are. You’re not to convince yourself that you are better than we are. You’re not to think you are more important than we are. You’re not to think you are more important than we are. You’re not to think you are good at anything. You’re not to laugh at us. You’re not to think anyone cares about you. You’re not to think you can teach us anything.
The New Modern Library’s Jante Law The library thinks you are special. The library thinks you are as good as everyone else. The library thinks you are smarter than everyone else. The library convinces you that you are better than everyone else. The library thinks you know more than everyone else. The library thinks you are more important than everyone else. The library thinks you are good at everything. The library laughs with you. The library cares about you. The library can teach you everything.

“The library is an unassuming block floating over celebrated traditions and a strong community foundation. The architecture speaks to the tradition of Jante Law; appearing modest from the exterior, while internalizing total exuberance. The masonry skin is delicately stripped away to shed daylight on evolving traditions.
