archi tecture of influence

Architecture is Influential Every decision, albeit ethical, architectural, or ecological, causes reactions and emotions. However important the decision, it should always be governed and checked by the inherent influence it will have on the future. An effect on the future is a fact, and planning the impact by attempting to transcend the architecture’s initial impression in a future sense is key. Just as great philosophical lessons surpass their generations with years of substantial and passionate discussions, architecture should follow their influence and strive to speak to the generations. It should never avoid becoming history, and should attempt to speak beyond its time. Architecture is aware of the Influence Architecture must be independent and well defined, because there are many influential criteria in the process of design, and the architecture can be over-run by the forces acting upon it. Architecture is a constant battle between forces and influences: of aesthetics, utility, reality, spirit, life, and emotion. All should be apparent, never one sided and never completely controlled by other outside pressure. The line of influence is thin and should be questioned subjectively with an critical and creative mind. The independence of architecture is directly proportional to the amount of accepted and unquestioned influences. There should always be a synthesis of influences, thus defining a new architecture, created by circumstance.

Intimacy within the chapel space was of major design concern. It was to provide enough space for fifty users while allowing for intimacy when there is only one user. Thus, the the procession into the chapel narrows to an intimate scale while the chapel follows suit.

Scale and intimacy of the lobby experience was altered through the use of the ceiling plane. In this situation the ceiling begins the procession into the theater environment.

a 13’ change in elevation over the span of the site greatly influences design decisions and generates an opportunity to creatively react to such conditions.

SiTe pLan

The Capitol hill site contains both east and west frontages on Broadway Street and is broken up into four parcels surrounding three new ToD transit stations. The general characteristic of the area supports the dependency on the urban edge along Broadway and the exploration of permeability within the edge is designed to allow for penetration into the hearts of the site. The immediate adjacency of Cal anderson park informs the design of the development in terms of views, size, and character of exterior spaces as to relate and complement the park and avoid competing with it. The residential nature of the existing 10th avenue exposure stimulates the concern for the zoning along the residential edge where a similar approach seems reputable.

prior to programming the development, a series of decisions were made in order to address the context and the urban influence. The project was thought of as a block which was to be thoughtfully sculpted. The formation of multifunctional exterior spaces and pedestrian/vehicular conduits allows for moments of interaction and activity in the public realm as well as a connection between tenants and their relationship to the environment.

In response to the sculpted footprint of the parcels, contextual forces, height limitations, and demographics, the program of the development was established to make the most informed and efficient spatial decisions. Parcel A will generate the most activity and revenue due to The location directly off Broadway while Parcel B will be divided to have both commercial and Office mixed with a more intimate housing zone. A mix of retail, Restaurants, and office space will be along the woonerf, while the side facing 10th avenue will be forsale housing. Parcel C will be predominantly cultural spaces, community spaces and a mix of housing types in an effort to relate to the nearby university. Parcel D will generate activity amongst the university community, providing housing and academic functions.

... multiple access points.

... light, both during the day and at night.

... minimal obstructions that deny the natural paths of people.

... an identity that reflects the city it is in.
