St Petersburg

UNCROWDED BALTIC CITIES SUNDAY 6 TH TO FRIDAY 18 TH OCTOBER 2019 Visiting the Baltic in autumn offers you a chance to uncover the very best of this remarkably diverse region, at a time when it’s less crowded but no less rewarding. With fewer tourists around and ample time to discover the genuine essence of every destination on your incredible itinerary, you’re in for a simply unforgettable Baltic exploration.

ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Newcastle / Day 2 – At Sea

Day 4 – At Sea / Day 5 – Helsinki, Finland

A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home. On arrival at Newcastle Port, we board the Balmoral and begin our journey, taking time to relax and enjoy the ship’s leisure facilities.

Day 3 – Copenhagen, Denmark

We arrive in the Danish capital of Copenhagen with its beautiful architecture and pristine waterways. Its narrow streets are lined with colourful cafés, bars and shops. The historic centre is home to the Royal Family’s Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace and Rosenborg Castle while the Little Mermaid sculpture is a must-visit attraction. Nyhavn – Copenhagen’s 17th-century waterfront – is home to many brightly coloured townhouses converted into bars and restaurants.

After a day at sea, we moor up in Finland’s capital of Helsinki, built on a peninsula amid a cluster of islands. This striking seaside port is surrounded by uplifting natural landscapes. The port also boasts a UNESCO-listed sea fortress a short distance from the shore, which is worth the short ferry journey to explore. Finnish cuisine can be found across the city, from the historic kauppahalli (covered market) to creative bistros.

Days 6 & 7 – St Petersburg, Russia

We cruise into St Petersburg, the jewel in the Baltic crown. This elegant city was the imperial capital for two centuries, and Tsar Peter the Great’s ‘Window on the West’. St Petersburg is built on 40 islands at the mouth of the River Neva and boasts baroque palaces, wide elegant streets, ornate bridges and broad curving canals. The Winter Palace is the most magnificent of six buildings that make up the Hermitage Museum.

Days 9 & 10 – At Sea Day 11 – Oslo, Norway

Our final port of call is Oslo, the capital of Norway and one of Scandinavia’s most historic destinations. Surrounded by mountains and its own fjord, this compact city is easy to explore on foot. The Viking Ship Museum has ships recovered from royal burial mounds in the Oslofjord, while the medieval Akershus Castle and Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park are well worth visiting. Oslo has recently been awarded European Green Capital for 2019.

Day 12 – At Sea / Day 13 – Disembarkation in Newcastle After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in Newcastle the following morning where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home.

Day 8 – Tallinn, Estonia

Our destination today is Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea. This ancient Hanseatic city is justifiably proud of its beautiful churches, limestone houses and well-preserved cobbled streets. Toompea Hill, with its medieval houses and alleyways, is the oldest part, and at its foot remains of the city wall can be seen. Atop the medieval town hall, the weathercock, Gamle Toomas, is an enduring symbol of Tallinn. Other highlights include the ornate Alexander Nevskij Cathedral and Kadriorg’s Castle. Copenhagen

Santa Cruz

THE CANARY ISLANDS & MADEIRA MONDAY 28 TH OCTOBER TO MONDAY 11 TH NOVEMBER 2019 All of the gorgeous islands on this cruise are sure to make a lasting impression. You’ll have chances to marvel at volcanic wonders, discover rolling sand dunes and lush valleys, and explore wonderfully floral landscapes – all while enjoying soothing seasonal warmth – on this sun-seeking, autumn adventure on board Black Watch.

ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Liverpool / Days 2-4 – At Sea

Day 11 – At Sea / Day 12 – Leixões (for Oporto), Portugal

A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home. On arrival at Liverpool Port, we board the Black Watch and begin our journey, taking time to relax and enjoy the ship’s leisure facilities.

After a day at sea, we moor up in Leixões. A short journey takes us into the heart of Oporto, with its fortress-like Cathedral and the Baroque Church of Clérigos. Head to the historic Ribeira District, where the narrow, cobbled lanes wind their way down to the Douro River. Don’t forget to visit one of the many wine cellars too, for a taste of the tipple named after the city – Port.

Day 5 – Cádiz, Spain

We moor up in Cadiz that hugs Andalusia’s sunlit Atlantic coast and is characterised by palm trees, lookout towers and weathered old buildings. Boasting a fascinating Old Town district; over 100 watchtowers; and traditional tapas bars serving delicious local cuisine, Cádiz offers a plethora of authentic sights and experiences.

Day 6 – At Sea / Day 7 – Arrecife, Lanzarote, Spain

Day 13 & 14 – At Sea / Day 15 ─ Disembarkation in Liverpool Las Palmas

After a day at sea, the bustling port of Arrecife is our port of call on Lanzarote’s east coast. Back in the 16th and 17th centuries the city was regularly attacked by pirates. To defend against these raiders, the court of Spain ordered two castles to be built – Castillo San Gabriel and Castillo San Jose. Today, it is home to the Museum of International and Contemporary Art, with a small but impressive collection.

Day 9 – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Day 8 – Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain

Day 10 – Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

We arrive in Las Palmas this morning. With its feel of mainland-Spain, spiced up with an eclectic mix of Asian and African cultures, Las Palmas is one of the Canary Island’s most popular destinations, attracting sunseekers who come to relax on its golden-sand beaches and soak up the gorgeous, year-round climate.

Sophisticated Santa Cruz, our port of call today, is built around boulevards and wide avenues that link elegant squares and parks. Well-preserved buildings feature in the old town and the city’s largest square, Plaza de España, is a pleasant spot to while away a few hours. Lively beaches are within easy reach of Santa Cruz too. We cruise into Funchal today, the capital of Portugal’s Madeiran archipelago. Enhanced by a subtropical climate that fills this ‘floating garden’ with the yearround colours and perfumes of flowers and fruit, Funchal was a favourite of Sir Winston Churchill. His praise of the city has ensured British visitors always receive a warm welcome from locals.

Qaqortoq

THE FJORDS OF GREENLAND WEDNESDAY 7 TH TO FRIDAY 23 RD AUGUST 2019 Journey off the well-beaten tourist track to unearth the fascinating culture and inspirational scenery of Greenland’s most remote regions on this memorable cruise adventure. Astonishing waterways, remarkable natural wonders and enchanting settlements await amongst these isolated lands, and smaller-sized Boudicca is your guide to uncovering the very best of them.

ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Dover / Days 2-4 – At Sea

Day 9 – Qaqortoq, Greenland

A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home. On arrival at Dover Port, we board the Boudicca and begin our journey, taking time to relax and enjoy the ship’s leisure facilities.

Days 5 & 6 – Reykjavík, Iceland

We arrive in Reykjavik – Iceland’s stunning coastal capital and the world’s most northerly capital. The city combines colourful buildings, extraordinary design and some of the country’s most beautiful natural wonders. The city is home to the world’s oldest parliament, and museums which trace Iceland’s Viking history.

Day 7 – At Sea / Day 8 – Cruising Prins Christian Sund & Cruising Torssukatak, Greenland

Carving a breathtaking, naturally-formed path separating the mainland from the pretty islands of Cape Farewell, Prins Christian Sund is one of Greenland’s most scenic waterways, flanked by magnificent glaciers and granite cliffs. Sailing the sound aboard a Fred. Olsen ship brings you closer to the glaciers, icebergs and imposing peaks for unmissable photo opportunities, while a range of wildlife is often seen too. Flanked by astonishingly tall seawalls, we cruise through the Torssukatak Fjord, home to the famous Thumbnail cliff – said to be one of the highest sea cliffs on earth.

We drop anchor in Qaqortoq. Frequently isolated by winter sea ice, Qaqortoq is southern Greenland’s largest town. Founded by Norwegian traders in 1775, the town still retains some beautiful colonial buildings from that time. The challenging landscape and harsh climate have ensured the preservation of Greenland’s traditional culture and many ancient Inuit skills.

Day 10 – Narsarsuaq, Greenland

Today’s destination is Narsarsuaq, a small settlement in southern Greenland. Around Narsarsuaq, the attractions include a great diversity of wildlife and tours to blue-ice glaciers. Just outside Narsarsuaq is Signal Hill, offering panoramic views of the fjord. Inland is the stunning Narsarsuaq Glacier which grows out of the ice sheet of Greenland’s interior.

Days 12-14 – At Sea Day 15 – Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

Our final port of call is Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands. Ancient echoes of Christian, Nordic and Celtic history resonate here ─ the town feels more Scandinavian than Scottish. Exploring the atmospheric paved streets and twisting lanes reveals a number of highlights, including the ruins of the Earl and Bishop’s Palaces and the recently restored St Magnus Cathedral.

Day 16 – At Sea / Day 17 – Disembarkation in Dover

After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in Dover the following morning where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home.

Day 11 – Nanortalik & Cruising Tasermiut Fjord, Greenland

UP TO HALF PRICE CABIN UPGRADES, PLEASE CALL OR VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS

We drop anchor in Nanortalik, Greenland’s most southerly town. Sat on a small island at the end of a wonderful fjord and surrounded by vast snow-topped mountains, the ‘Place of Polar Bears’ is truly unique. The small woodlands and prairies against a spectacular backdrop make this is a nature lover’s paradise. Polar bears live and hunt on the sea ice close to the town and are often seen from the shores of Nanortalik. Later, we cruise along the Tasermiut Fjord, between huge mountains and daunting ‘Big Wall’ cliff faces. This stunning part of Greenland is considered one of the 10 wonders of the Arctic and is rich with beautiful flora and diverse fauna. Prins Christian Sund

The city’s many fascinating museums include the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. In the morning we arrive in the picturesque village of Eidfjord. Set within the breathtaking Hardangerfjord, Eidfjord is located beneath a backdrop of soaring, snow-peaked mountains, engraved with rivers and waterfalls and is a gateway to some of the region’s most spectacular natural features.

Day 2 – Cruising Lysefjord, Norway

Day 4 – Bergen, Norway

Today we cruise the Lysefjord, a stunning example of the Norwegian fjords’ spectacular natural beauty. Carved into the landscape by glacier movement in the Ice Age, Lysefjord is lined by magnificent mountains and dramatic cliff faces. Sailing on board a smaller cruise ship is the best way to take in the fjord’s eclectic sights. Look out for tumbling waterfalls, wonderful wildlife and pretty settlements dotted along the shores.

Bergen

Day 3 – Cruising Hardangerfjord & Eidfjord, Norway

Known as the ‘Queen of the Fjords’, Hardangerfjord is situated in the heart of western Norway. The best way to experience this incredible fjord is to sail along the 197 kilometres, enjoying the spellbinding scenery, towering mountains and waterfalls.

Today’s port of call is Bergen, framed by seven hills and seven fjords. One of the city’s many attractions is the 900-year-old UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf. The Bryggen’s cobbled stairways are lined with traditional half-timbered buildings that climb away from the waterfront. Don’t miss a chance to ride the Funicular Railway to the top of Mount Fløyen, offering spectacular panoramic views.

Day 5 – Flåm & Cruising Sognefjord, Norway

We drop anchor in Flåm, a tiny village on the banks of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the spectacular Sognefjord – the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. Situated amongst scenes of picturesque orchards, hamlets and farmland, this is one of Norway’s most breathtaking locations. A must-do is the Flåmsbana Railway which climbs over 20km through magnificent mountain scenery, with incredible sights such as the striking Kjosfossen Waterfall. Later we cruise along the magnificent Sognefjord, one of the world’s longest fjords and the largest in Norway. Truly one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders, a scenic cruise along this spectacular waterway showcases the best that Mother Nature has to offer including snow-capped mountains and glistening waterfalls.

See pages 14 - 15 for dates, cabin types and prices

Day 6 – Olden, Norway

At its eastern end, the magnificent Nordfjord divides into three arms beneath the glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen, and Olden sits at the beginning of the southernmost of these arms. This charming village is situated among green meadows, through which babbling brooks meander between pretty houses. Nearby is the former home of William Singer, the founder of the sewing-machine company.

Day 7 – At Sea / Day 8 – Disembarkation in Newcastle

After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in Newcastle the following morning where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home. UP TO HALF PRICE CABIN UPGRADES, PLEASE CALL OR VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS

Barbados

BARBADOS & ISLANDS OF THE CARIBBEAN SUNDAY 8 TH TO SATURDAY 28 TH MARCH 2020 Escape to the Caribbean and indulge in a slice of paradise as you enjoy time to relax and explore Barbados before you join the cruise ship and hop between a string of stunning islands. ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & flight to Barbados / Days 2-4 – At leisure at the Turtle Beach Hotel, Barbados

A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at the airport, check in for your flight to Barbados. From Barbados airport, we transfer to the Turtle Beach Hotel, where we enjoy a few days at leisure to relax, enjoy the facilities and explore the island before we begin our cruise.

Day 5 – Embarkation in Bridgetown

After a morning at leisure, we depart for Bridgetown Port where we board the Braemar and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.

St Lucia

12

Day 6 – Castries, St Lucia

Castries, the capital of the island nation of St Lucia, is known for its palm-lined, soft, white Vigie Beach and this is our port of call today. Like St Lucia itself, the city combines heritage and culture with peace, relaxation and tranquillity, and Castries is a gateway to St Lucia’s wealth of national parks with vast forests, native plants and wildlife. The city’s streets are easy to navigate. Leafy Derek Walcott Square – named after a native noble laureate – is home to a 400-year-old Samaan tree and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception built in 1897. The nearby market in Jeremie Street, sells a wide range of items including fresh local fruit.

Day 7 – Basseterre, St Kitts

Today we moor up in Basseterre. With some of the oldest colonial buildings in the Caribbean, the elegant St Kitts and Nevis capital of Basseterre is a beautiful town bursting with history. Established by the French in the 17th century, and claimed by the British following the Napoleonic War, much of Basseterre’s original Georgian architecture still stands and begs to be explored. The domed Old Treasury Building on the waterfront – now the National Museum – is worth a visit, as is the Victorian Berkeley Memorial Clock, a four-face, castiron tower that sits on the Circus, an original 19thcentury traffic roundabout. St George’s, an Anglican church originally built by the French, has been destroyed by fire several times, and was rebuilt to its present form in 1869.

English Harbour, Antigua

Day 8 – St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda

Today we visit St John’s, capital city of Antigua and Barbuda, often referred to as the crown jewels of the Caribbean. With its large selection of beaches, typically hot climate and an array of cool seaside bars, the city of St John’s is a sun worshipper’s paradise. In the city itself, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda has exhibits on island history and St John’s Cathedral, a 19th-century Anglican Church, sits sweetly on a hill near the 17th-century Government House. The city’s vibrant red and yellow colonial buildings reflect the personality and warm welcome from locals, while a monument to the nation’s founder, V.C. Bird, is next to the colourful street market which sells flowers, fruit and handicrafts.

Day 9 – Philipsburg, St Maarten, Netherlands Antilles

YOUR TRIP INCLUDES

Days 17 & 18 – At Sea

Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch half of St Maarten, a Caribbean island amicably shared between Holland and France for centuries and this is our port of call today. The town is known as a shopper’s paradise, while its charming sandy beach, studded with colourful clapboard restaurants and outdoor cafés, is accessible via water taxi. Front Street, Philipsburg’s long main street, is festooned with shops, but the alleys and courtyards down to Back Street are also worth exploring. There are some stylish restaurants, but the Lo-Lo huts, which sell grilled chicken, fish and cakes from home-made barbecues, are great for a cheap snack of authentic Caribbean food.

Day 19 – La Coruña, Spain

Following two days at sea, we have time in the city of La Coruña, the capital of the province and a busy seaport situated in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. La Coruña boasts an impressive seafront promenade, beautiful beaches and a host of attractions such as the Domus Museum, the Casa del Hombre and Torre De Hercules – said to be the only Roman lighthouse in existence – which offers sweeping coastal views from the top of its 60 metre high tower. The Paseo Marítimo, a lovely 13km walkway and bike path, runs from the port, around the peninsula, and along the ocean beaches. The compact Ciudad Vieja – La Coruña’s old quarter – is a must-visit area. Often referred to as “the city” by the locals, the medieval centre contains remains of the centuries-old Roman wall that once protected it. Beyond the historic city is a proud, modern metropolis, which boasts a superb food scene and a buzzing nightlife. The world’s best picnic food, empanadas, and the locally produced beer, Estrella, both demand trying.
