Himalayan Gardens, Harrogate, York & Brontë Experience

York Minster

From £649 5 Days Aug

Join us for a memorable celebration of Yorkshire, a beautifully diverse county peppered with charming towns, stunning gardens and fascinating landmarks. We discover how a spectacular Garden and Sculpture Park has been inspired by the Himalayas, explore the picturesque spa town of Harrogate and step back in time at the world-famous Brontë Parsonage Museum. As the former home of the well-known sisters, this is a wonderful chance to take in the very spot where Charlote, Emily and Anne wrote Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, three of the most celebrated novels of literary history. No trip to ‘God’s Own Country’ would be complete without a visit to York too, where we tick off the iconic sights on a guided walking tour and enjoy a special dinner cruise on the River Ouse.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival

Check in to the Oulton Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

Day 2 Brontë Parsonage Museum, Haworth & Piece Hall

This morning we head to the picturesque hilltop village of Haworth, where the Brontë sisters spent much of their short but fruitful lives. We walk around the Parsonage, churchyard and village centre, discovering the context of the famous Brontë sisters’ lives and work. Our guided tour continues at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, their former home, which has been lovingly preserved and contains the largest collection of Brontë works in the world. Admire the fascinating manuscripts, letters and early editions and imagine Charlotte, Emily and Anne sitting at the dining room table, writing their famous novels and sharing ideas. Afterwards we enjoy free time in Haworth. The village, with its historic cobbled main street, offers tempting tea rooms, quirky gift and antique stores, old-fashioned sweet shops, charming restaurants and cosy pubs. Our last stop today is Piece Hall in picturesque Halifax. Tucked away within a spellbinding landscape of rippling hills and valleys, this Grade I listed architectural treasure is truly one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems. Being the only survivor of the great 18th-century northern cloth halls, it boasts a rich industrial heritage that embodies the importance of the trade in hand woven textiles or ‘pieces’ of cloth.

Day 3 York & Evening Dinner Cruise

We make our way to lovely York for a fascinating guided walking tour. The city is steeped in history, from its founding by the Romans in 71AD to its wealth as a medieval wool trading centre and there is plenty of evidence of this fascinating past left to admire, from the Roman city walls to the surviving medieval streets known as the ‘Shambles’. Next, we enjoy a guided walking tour of the iconic York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe and home to world-famous stained glass windows that have led to the Minster being described as ‘the Sistine Chapel of England’. This evening we enjoy a memorable dinner cruise along the picturesque River Ouse, combining delicious food with lovely views of the city from a different perspective.

Day 4 Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park & Harrogate

Today we head to the spectacular Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park. Set in 45 acres of stunning gardens, woodland and an arboretum, the park is home to over 80 contemporary sculptures and a wide range of plants, including colourful rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias. We find out how the gardens are inspired by the Himalayas during our special guided tour with a Gardener. Finally, we visit the elegant spa town of Harrogate, famous for its Royal Pump Room, the Grade II listed Royal Hall and the attractive Montpellier Quarter with its pedestrianised streets lined with 19th-century buildings.
