Chums staff to remain paid

■ Operations have been suspended at Chum’s

following concerns about a safety incident last week. By rachel hughes JUSTICE editor

Daily operations at Cholmondeley’s Coffeehouse have been suspended following an incident on Friday, March 6, and the employment status of its 13 student workers still remains under dispute. In an interview with the Justice, four students who worked at Chum’s described the incident: on that Friday, the smoke alarm went off in Chum’s because students were smoking in the coffeehouse’s back room. The two student workers who were staffing the coffeehouse that night did not evacuate it. When Public Safety arrived at the coffeehouse and found that occupants were still inside, they evacuated the facility and closed it for the night. According to Niri Halperin ’15, Halperin and her co-general manager Josh Berman ’15 received an email that night from Robert Steinberg ’13, the Student Activities specialist who acts as a liaison between Chum’s and the Department of Student Activities, saying that the venue was closed for the weekend and that the staff was not to go into the space. The next day, Halperin said, when Chum’s staff members tried to get inside the coffeehouse, they found that all of the locks had been changed. In the weeks since then, the staff of Chum’s has met with several members of the University’s administration—including Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities Stephanie Grimes, Dean of Students Jamele Adams and Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Andrew Flagel—to sort out the situation.

Space challenges result in tension ■ Several student groups

faced issues of space constraints, including the Women’s Resource Center. By rachel HUGHES JUSTICE editor

Last week, the University announced and then reportedly reversed a decision to revamp the Women’s Resource Center—a space in the Shapiro Campus Center used by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and Students Talking About Relationships— into a space for Dharmic prayer. Social media pages for FMLA and STAR first shared the news on Face-

book on March 18 about the move, which would have seen FMLA and STAR relocating into the office currently used by Student Sexuality Information Services. SSIS’ office is also in the Shapiro Campus Center, just down the hall from the Women’s Resource Center. As of press time, the only communication the student body has received

Faculty meeting discusses budget, new hires ■ The faculty meeting

last Thursday addressed concerns about next year ’s university budget. By max moran JUSTICE editor

See CHUMS, 7 ☛

Last Thursday’s faculty meeting included discussion on next year’s university budget, ongoing administrative search committees and the unequal treatment of non-tenure track faculty. Provost Lisa Lynch facilitated the meeting in Olin-Sang 101. The meeting began with two memorial tributes to Prof. Emeritus Andrew Szent-Györgyi (BIOL) and

Prof. Barbara Levy (ENG). Lynch then began her provost report by noting that the March meeting of the Board of Trustees, which historically has focused on a presentation of the University’s budget for the upcoming academic year, will take place this week. Lynch stated that the proposed budget will include requests for increases in the salary pool, tuition

increases and room and board increases. She noted her personal request to use some of the funds from the sale of Brandeis House in February in order to address concerns about faculty retention and salary gaps. Lynch characterized the upcoming budget as “a steady-as-you-go budget” and “not a budget that has
