appointed as the chairman of the Presidential Search Committee following Koplow’s nomination for the position of president. By NASHRAH RAHMAN JUSTICE EDITOR
University trustee Meyer Koplow ’72 has stepped down from the chairmanship of the Presidential Search Committee to accept a faculty nomination for University president, according to Chair of the Board of Trustees Malcolm Sherman in an e-mail to the Brandeis community last Tuesday. Sherman appointed Stephen Kay, a
member of the search committee and past chair of the Board of Trustees, as the new chair of the Presidential Search Committee. According to Sherman’s campuswide e-mail, Koplow said after learning of his nomination, “It is only appropriate that I step down from my position as chairman, and I will not serve the committee in any capacity.” Koplow did not respond to requests for further comment by press time. “I understand and respect [Koplow’s] decision to leave the search committee, and want to thank him for the outstanding job he has done to get us to this point in the process,” Sherman wrote in the e-mail. Reinharz will speak at the 2010 Delhi Sustainable Development conference. By ALANA ABRAMSON JUSTICE EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
University President Jehuda Reinharz will visit India from Feb. 1 to Feb. 13 as an invited speaker at the 2010 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, the first major convention on climate change since Copenhagen, according to a University press release sent by Daniel Terris, the vice president for Global Affairs and the director for the International Center for Ethics, Justice, and Public Life. Reinharz will be accompanied by Terris and Prof. Harleen Singh (GRALL), according to the press release. In addition to speaking at the summit, Reinharz will speak in Mumbai about promoting social justice in an era of globalization and visit nongovernmental organ-
izations that are focused on sustainable development and education. Singh, who is the co-chair of the South Asian Studies program, said that the trip was part of the Brandeis-India initiative, which began two years ago through the Office of Global Affairs as a method of strengthening the partnership between Brandeis and India through businesses, nongovernmental organizations and governmental institutions. Reinharz wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that the summit’s sponsor, The Energy and Resources Institute in Delhi, and the Asia Society’s Mumbai Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the world about Asia, extended a speaking invitation last September. Reinharz wrote that Brandeis has always had strong students from India but that no concrete effort has been made to maintain connections between these students and the University. “This effort to change that reflects the demands being made

against Diana Aronin ’11 and ordered that she be removed from office. By HARRY SHIPPS JUSTICE EDITOR
The Student Union Judiciary has ruled in the case of In re Diana Aronin that the former Student Union Secretary was “guilty of such breach of constitutional duty as was specified by the Senate” in Resolution F09-3 regarding her failure to present a referendum to the Brandeis community and has ordered that Aronin be removed from office. The UJ released its unanimous decision, written by Chief Justice Judah Marans ’11, on Sunday night. The trial was held Jan. 24. Aronin was impeached by the Student Union Senate for failing to submit to the student body for a vote a referendum on an amendment proposed by Jonathan Freed ’09 to establish a midyear senator position. Student Union President Andy Hogan ’11 was censured for
his role in the failure. As per the UJ’s decision, Aronin was removed from office immediately, and the post of Student Union Secretary is currently vacant. Hogan announced in an e-mail to the student body that a special election will be held to fill the post on Tuesday, Feb. 9. As published in a previous Justice article, Ryan Fanning ’11, who represented the Student Union, argued at the trial that “the Student Union Senate was forced to impeach Secretary Aronin for deliberate abrogation of her duties under the Constitution.” After hearing the UJ’s decision, Fanning said “I think the Union Judiciary did a good job of ensuring that it was a fair trial and that the opinion was well written and well considered.” Aronin’s counsel, Deena Glucksman ’11 presented three main arguments to the UJ: She argued that the amendment proposing the creation of the new senatorial position was submitted at an improper time; that the sponsor of the amendment, Jonathan Freed, was not eligible to amend the
