Pretty in Punk By Justice Coburn

My collection was inspired by the “Afro-Punk community. Afro-Punk is a community of young influence individuals of all backgrounds who uses different form art as expression known for their music. I started my research by looking for images of their fashion taken at their yearly music festival created in 2003. I discovered their style was an edgy form of festival wear, a blend of bold patterns and color inspired by African, urban, punk culture. I then watched the documentary and went to website/social named after the community which provided a better understanding of the community beyond fashion. The collection consists of garment reminiscent of clothing seen at popular music festivals such as Coachella and SXSW. An assortment of jumpsuits/rompers, crop tops and maxi dresses/skirts and kimonos. The garments of collection consisted of paint splatter and knotting manipulation, inspired by images from the Afro Punk festival goers garments and the urban setting of the festival. These elements inspired me to incorporated knotting and graffiti into my designs. My designs are aimed to appeal to young vibrant women from the age of 20-30. The customer is a woman who is in college are/or in the early stages of their careers living urban city that are looking for fun outfits to wore outside of work or school.
