ollow the guided walking map and learn some of Truckee’s rich history. A touch of history, spiced with eclectic shops, galleries, delicious cuisine and quaint cozy inns, makes Truckee as much a part of the Sierra experience as it was over a century ago. During the summer don’t miss Truckee Thursdays street festival from 5–9 pm.

A Sassarini Home—Built circa 1895 by the Sassarini family, this home was later purchased by the McGwinn family on July 15, 1918 for 10 dollars in gold coin. Doyle McGwinn grew up to be the town butcher for many years. B titus Home—This home was constructed circa 1912 on a spot previously occupied by a Chinese boarding house. It was the only architecturally designed home in Brickelltown, designed by Will Bliss. Frank Titus, Sr. built this home while working as an engineer on the narrow gauge railroad, which hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe to Truckee. C Eaton Homes—Originally built by Edward Brickell circa 1880 and then served as the Truckee Lumber Company store. Harry Eaton, Brickell’s son-in-law, was a longtime railroad engineer. His son Harry, grew up in this home and in the 1930s he was know to ski to Tahoe City to deliver the mail when trains were snowbound in Truckee. D the Kruger C.B. White House—Placed in the National Register of Historic Places, it was built in 1873 by W.H. Kruger, an original owner of the Truckee Lumber Company. In 1904, C.B. White, a banker and prominent citizen, bought the house. e rocking Stone—Although the 17-ton stone no longer rocks, it is one of the 25 known rocking stones in the world. The local Native Americans used this rock for drying their food and holding

ceremonies as far back as 15,000 years ago. One of the early tribes painstakingly chipped away the rock to flatten the top and curve the bottom so animals couldn’t climb up and eat their food. f the Loading Dock—Once a loading dock and freight station for the Southern Pacific Railroad, this building served as a warehouse for years, where much of Truckee’s lumber and ice were shipped. G TRuckee’s Old Jail—Built in 1875 out of native stone, the brick was added in 1901. This is one of the West’s oldest jails in continuous use until 1964. Open on summer weekends. H First and Last Chance Saloon—It was the last saloon heading west and the first heading east. This building was once Truckee’s original telephone office. I Sierra Tavern Building—Built as a three story building in 1928. A fourth floor was added in 1938. This was once the location of the law office of Truckee’s famous citizen Charles McGlashan who wrote the history of the Donner Party. J Cabona’s—Founded in 1918, Cabona’s is the oldest retail establishment on Commercial Row. Its founder Dave Cabona originally sold fishing tackle, appliances and general merchandise. The eastern part of the store was a coffee shop. The coffee cup is still embedded in the sidewalk.

What do you get when haute cuisine meets the Sierra? More than just a good meal with a view. You get an “I gotta tell the neighbors about this place” moment. The food critics at Zagat don’t hand out ratings lightly, and the fact that there are five worthy recipients of that honor in our vicinity tells you something about the caliber of the dining available for our enjoyment. Following are the local, Zagat-rated restaurants that made the “A” list.

Truckee’S Five Zagat-rated restaurants share what they bring to the table

By Simone Grandmain

That resulted in the highest compliment a French chef could possibly give: they paid him. From there his career grew to gigs at, among others, Bay Wolf in Oakland and the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite before his love of chef-dome collided with his love of the mountains and the rest, as they say, is the stuff great creme brulee (a Pianeta specialty) is made of. Arnoff’s “must-have” in the kitchen? Soft, triple cream, “stinky” cheese.

Manzanita www.manzanitalaketahoe.com

Pianeta www.pianetarestaurant.com Executive chef Bill Arnoff doesn’t just meet expectations—he surpasses them. “Our patrons leave pleasantly surprised,” says Arnoff. “They are not prepared for a fine dining experience of Pianeta’s caliber—not in a little town like Truckee!” In the 13 years Arnoff has been creating such masterpieces as saltimbocca with fontina cheese pasta and crispy duck with a balsamic and basil demiglaze, he has seen many guests come, and, well, not go. “We have a big fan base. People will come in here the first night of their stay in town and then be back the next and the next.” If guests are surprised to find themselves in a first-rate restaurant, dining on original Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, their chef is not. He is exactly where he intended to be. Arnoff’s love of cooking began in high school where he was selected to apprentice in the kitchen of Palo Alto restaurant Chez Louis. 36

This is a place that defines culinary tourism. The setting immediately sets the tone of a meal to remember. Panoramic views. Warm wood paneling and cozy fireplace-lit niches. A perfect backdrop for celebrated chef Traci Des Jardins to showcase her skills in all things Haute Cuisine. Des Jardins grew up surrounded by the plentiful offerings of San Joaquin Valley agriculture but learned what to do with it in some of the finest kitchens in Los Angeles, France and New York City. A decade ago she opened celebrated Jardinière in San Francisco and when the chance to expand her talents to the Sierra presented itself, she jumped. “I’d been enjoying Tahoe for years, so it was a welcome opportunity,” she says. Used to preparing seasonal menus in the Bay, Des Jardins admits it is inspiring to create new ones for “more athletic, active appetites.” Manzanita’s “TDJ’s Warm Bread Salad” with chunks of sour dough, crescenza cheese and artichoke hearts, however, is a year-round hit, carb-loading or not, snow or shine. The menu speaks French, with duck, short ribs and colorful vegetables—but you’ll master it beautifully right up until your meringue topped dessert. Des Jardins’ “must haves” in the kitchen? French or Spanish olive oils for their buttery, round flavor.

KEITH THOMAS

Moody’s Bistro and Lounge www.moodysbistro.com Chef de Cuisine Guy Frenette’s first lesson in a professional kitchen was the importance of fresh and from scratch. Says Frenette, “From scratch, the flavors pop. There is a huge difference in a sauce made from a freshly peeled tomatillo and one made from processed.” That lesson took on more importance when he moved to California and started chefing at Olivetti in San Francisco. There he worked with maestro Paul Bertolli who shared his skills in the craft of Charcuterie. “Bertolli took everything to the grass roots level, so I learned it all,” explains Frenette. Today, Moody’s salami sells out as quickly as they make it. Its setting in the 19th century Truckee Hotel has made Moody’s a respite for locals and visitors, including Sir Paul McCartney who has been known to take the stage in the lounge on more than one occasion. Frenette’s “must-have” in the kitchen? Salt.

Dragonfly Restaurant and Sushi Bar www.dragonflycuisine.com It is almost impossible to stroll down Donner Pass Road in downtown Truckee without heading up the stairs, following the mouth-watering scents that lead to Dragonfly. Is it Japanese food? Thai? Indian? Says chef and owner Billy McCullough, “I cook in a style I love to eat.” Get in line. Since opening its doors in 2001, Dragonfly has wowed with a menu of exotic spices, fruits and vegetables blended with meat, fish and “I cook in a style I love to eat.”

—Billy McCullough, Owner/Chef Dragonfly Restaurant and Sushi Bar

poultry. McCullough’s passion for Pan-Asian took off during his eight years at Wolfdale’s working with chef Douglas Dale, the man he considers the “Grandfather of PanAsian.” Today, many of McCullough’s flavors may come from the Far East, but his pantry comes from his own backyard—metaphorically speaking. “It is mind blowing the beautiful produce you can find just up and over the hill in Grass Valley,” says McCullough. His “must haves” in the kitchen? Togarashi spice from Japan and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce.

Cottonwood Restaurant and Bar www.cottonwoodrestaurant.com Cottonwood overlooks Truckee from the site of one of the nation’s oldest ski lodges, dating back to the early 1900’s. But there is nothing passé about this Zagatrated establishment’s menu. Pine nut crusted Southeast Asian Basa with a tomato-dill Beuree blanc…Butternut squash enchiladas with Ancho chile mole…Beef Wellington… “There’s too much good stuff out there to stay “There’s too much good stuff out there to stay with one cuisine.”

—DAVID SMITH, EXECUTIVE CHEF COTTONWOOD RESTAURANT AND BAR

with one cuisine,” says executive chef David Smith, explaining Cottonwood’s eclectic menu. Yet while Cottonwood does have nightly specials that change on a whim, Smith concedes “there would be a revolt if we stopped serving our Caesar salad or our baby back rib appetizer.” The man understands staying power. After studying under renowned chefs from New York to Alaska, Smith decided to hang his toque at Cottonwood where it has remained for sixteen years. “Must haves” in the kitchen? Beer and coffee.
