President, Somersett Board of Directors
Meet John Lipinski: Champion for Soulful Seeds
and Community Involvement
John Lipinski, a Somersett resident since 2012, serves as the Board Chair of Soulful Seeds, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing food security and sustainable agriculture within the local community. A retired industry professional and Air Force veteran, John brings extensive experience to this role, combining strategic leadership with hands-on involvement. His deep commitment to community service, coupled with his previous work addressing food insecurity as a Board member of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, led him to Soulful Seeds. In this capacity, John plays a key role in driving the organization’s growth, with a focus on empowering individuals through sustainable food education and access, fostering independence in the process.
Soulful Seeds started as a small garden initiative on the Saint Mary’s Hospital campus with the vision of feeding neighbors facing food insecurity. Today, it has expanded across multiple locations, running USDA Certified People’s Gardens in the community. These gardens provide more than just fresh produce—they offer educational programs, workforce development opportunities, and a space for community members to come together and make a positive impact on each other’s lives.
2024 marked a year of noteworthy progress for Soulful Seeds, with several major milestones. The organization completed crucial construction projects at the Our Place Transitional Housing Campus, including adding two hoop houses, cold storage, irrigation systems for active growing spaces, and establishing a native plant garden. The community took notice, as Soulful Seeds earned three prestigious awards: the 100% Board Giving Award, the Compass Rose Award for Service through the UNR School of Social Work, and recognition as a USDA Certified People’s Garden.
Volunteer engagement was a key driver of success in 2024. With the help of 532 volunteers, Soulful Seeds saw a 34% increase in community participation. Volunteer hours grew
from 1,798 in 2023 to 2,412 hours in 2024, a testament to the community’s commitment to the organization’s mission. Volunteers, including many Somersett residents, helped maintain the gardens and supported other projects, such as building hoop houses and expanding green waste collection. Through partnerships with local businesses like Saint Mary’s Hospital, Grand Sierra Resort and Great Basin Co-Op, Soulful Seeds has turned green waste into valuable compost for its gardens, fostering a sustainable, hyper-local food system. In addition to garden work, 2024 saw the launch of two workforce development programs, supported by a USDA grant. Soulful Seeds hired its first Arborist Apprentice who is now gaining hands-on experience while pursuing formal education in his field. The organization also hosted its first Same Day Work and Pay sessions, providing immediate income opportunities for community members in need.
John is excited about what the future holds for Soulful Seeds. In 2025, the organization plans to enhance its vocational and educational programming, expand its fresh food markets, and continue improving and beautifying its gardens. One of the main goals is to identify a new Soulful Seeds neighborhood garden, ensuring that the impact of their work continues to grow across the region.
For John, the most rewarding aspect of his involvement with Soulful Seeds is seeing the organization’s vision come to life through the dedication of the board, staff, volunteers, and the broader community. The support from Somersett residents and the Wild Whimsical Women (Somersett-based women’s philanthropic and social group) have been instrumental to driving success for Soulful Seeds. He encourages others to volunteer or donate, highlighting the opportunity to learn new skills, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to a cause that promotes health, well-being, and independence. Through its gardens, educational programs, and workforce initiatives, Soulful Seeds is cultivating not just food, but also the
promise of a brighter, more sustainable future for all. With the continued support of volunteers and donors, the organization will remain a vital part of the community, providing access to fresh food, creating job opportunities, and strengthening social bonds for years to come.
In his spare time, you may find John cruising Somersett Blvd with his wife, Terry, in their classic 1950 Hudson Pacemaker

Golf Tip
Controlling
By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf
your wedge distances
It’s spring – time to play the Canyon 9. What is the best way to control distance from short range to the green?
1. You must first understand the distances you hit the ball with each wedge in your bag on a full swing. Most players have at least three wedges in their bag; I carry four. The distance you should initially focus on is carry distance. Once you chart these distances, you’ll have a starting point. You must use all the wedges in your bag—not just a pitching wedge. Your Gap, Sand, and Lob Wedges provide distance control on their own. If the wedges are spaced by 4 degrees, it will result in a +/- 10-yard difference per club. When charting your wedges, be sure to include ½ shots, ¾ shots, and full shots with all your wedges. Also, take note of your trajectory - certain clubs and shot trajectories are more effective with different green types and pin locations.
2. Remember your tempo for a less-than-full shot is 2:1 (for full swing, it’s 3:1). This puts the emphasis on a positive strike through the ball and encourages a complete finish. To practice, try reciting a two-syllable word on the backswing and a one-syllable word on the follow-through (you have to recite at the same speed though). Example – AP-PLE-PIE or PIZ-ZA-PIE
3. Control distance with the length of your backswing. Along with maintaining the 2:1 tempo, this will help you achieve different distances without the need to swing “easy” or “hard”. A shorter backswing will be slower than a longer backswing, however they should both take the same amount of time.
Your through swing will reflect this as well when reciting the one-syllable word. A longer backswing will equate to a faster through swing whereas a shorter backswing will equate to a slower through swing. Consistent tempo will lead to better distance control with your wedges.
4. Benchmark a few backswing lengths with all of your wedges and chart the carry distances you are getting – this will help you transfer that knowledge to the course.
5. Limit the weight transfer on less-than-full shots and keep more weight on your lead foot. This will ensure you get a good clean strike of the ball. I like to imagine my feet have grown roots into the ground, and I might even twist my knees outward as I address the ball to create a little tension between my feet, lower body, and the ground.
6. Make sure you hinge your wrists on the backswing. This will help the club travel smoothly down through the ball.
7. Lastly, you still need to turn your chest through to the target. If you are accelerating the club through the ball with the 2:1 tempo, you’ll succeed with this. Remember – the ball gets in the way of the clubhead - here is no need to “hit” the ball.
Golf is a game of continuous growth and challenge; You can always work to improve your skill set. If your skill is where you want it –Enjoy!

Meet your neighbor:
The Sande family
The year was 2003, and John Sande IV was searching for the perfect place to buy his first home. At the time, he was a bachelor drawn to Somersett, one of Reno’s vibrant, up-and-coming communities experiencing rapid growth. What initially captured John’s attention were the breathtaking mountain views and the community’s luxury golf course, where he later served on the board for several years.
John’s ties to Reno run deep. His grandfather was one of the few general surgeons in the city, and his father was a managing partner a successful local law firm, establishing the Sande family as a respected part of Reno’s history. John’s early years were spent at Roy Gomm Elementary School, followed by wrestling and playing football at Reno High, which earned him a football scholarship to Stanford University. After completing his undergraduate degree, he pursued a Doctorate of Law from Santa Clara University.
Following in his father’s footsteps, John launched his own law firm and government affairs practice, playing an instrumental role in shaping Nevada legislation. His firm expanded with offices in Reno, Las Vegas, and Carson City, solidifying his reputation as a leader in both law and public policy.
In 2009, John met his now-wife, Sepideh Arya-Sande, who is originally from Tehran, Iran. She moved to Reno earlier that year to complete a master’s program in Nutrition at UNR and is now a Physician Assistant at Renown Medical, where she has been practicing medicine for nearly a decade. Sepideh fell in love with Reno right away because of its welcoming people and beautiful natural surroundings. “You can’t beat the sky and mountains in Reno,” she adds.
When asked, “Why Reno?” Sepideh responds without hesitation: “The residents here are so friendly and genuine. I love what I do because it allows me to be an active part of the community and help people. John’s family has been here for generations, so it’s important to me that our children grow up with a strong sense of community and local pride.”
The Sande family’s commitment to building and serving the Reno community has taken on a new dimension with the opening of their Mediterranean restaurant franchise, The Great Greek. Their first location launched earlier this year in Reno’s Damonte Ranch neighborhood.
Sepideh first discovered The Great Greek while attending her physician assistant program in Henderson, Nevada, and instantly fell in love with the fresh, high-quality ingredients. Inspired, she approached the owners in 2015, eager to bring the restaurant to Reno. Initially, they declined. However, a few years later, the business was sold to new owners who decided to expand it into a nationwide franchise. Once the Sandes found out, they seized the opportunity to bring it to Reno.
“The Great Greek reminds me of the food I grew up with in the Middle East,” Sepideh explains. “The hummus is so fresh, and the tzatziki tastes just like it did when I was little. Everything on the menu is delicious and wholesome. Bringing this restaurant to Reno is my way of blending my culture with John’s in a city we love.”
If you’re in the Damonte Ranch area, stop by The Great Greek to enjoy one of their signature gyros or rice bowls—brought to you by a proud local Somersett family.

Tray’s Wildfire Mitigation Update:
by Tray Palmer
We’ve made a lot of progress in this past quarter! Since January, we have:
• Mitigated approximately 92 acres of fire fuel within our community
• Established a 12-acre fuel break in Sierra Canyon from Bennetts Ct. to Dutch Hollow
• Reduced approximately 33 acres of fuel load along the west side of Del Webb Pkwy, extending north to Trail Creek Way
• Reduced 33 acres of fuel on the hillsides west of Champion Hills Trail and along Scott Valley Road
• Cleared approximately 15 acres on the slopes east of Maple Leaf Trail
• Started mechanical and hand mitigation along Placerwood Trail, Chipshot Trail, and Beacon Ridge, that will continue this Spring
Coming up this Spring
The Goats are coming!
This April, High Desert Grazing is bringing a herd of hardworking goats to graze approximately 20 acres along the scenic north Mogul Creek canyon, between Pepperwood Ct., Mountain Spirit Trail, and Peavine Valley Rd.
These Spanish goats, ranging in age from one to three years, are specially bred to tackle all types of vegetation across open, rugged terrain—making them nature’s own landscapers!
Feel free to visit the area and observe their progress, but please
note there will be electric fencing and guard dogs present to keep the goats safe and secure within the designated grazing area. For everyone’s safety, we kindly ask visitors to keep their dogs on leash, maintain a respectful distance from the goats, and avoid loud noises that may startle or disturb them.
We are excited to welcome these amazing creatures as they help us naturally and effectively reduce our fire fuels!
Evacuation Drill in May for Wildfire Awareness Month!
As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, the risk of wildfire intensifies in our region, making awareness, preparedness, and community action more important than ever. In an emergency, it’s easy to panic. Being prepared and knowing how and when to evacuate can help you stay calm and act quickly in the event of a true emergency.
To help prepare, our community will hold an evacuation drill on Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. We’ll be working with the Reno Fire Department to simulate a potential wildfire scenario including high winds pushing fire towards us from the west.
Before the drill, we’ll host an evacuation presentation on May 6th at 5:00 p.m. at the Alpine Lodge in Sierra Canyon. This will provide important information to help you prepare for the drill and future emergencies.
WHEN TO EVACUATE
Leave when evacuation is recommended by fire officials to avoid being caught in fire, smoke, or road congestion. You don’t need to wait to be ordered by authorities to evacuate.
Fire officials will determine the areas to be evacuated and escape routes to use depending upon the fire’s location, behavior, winds, and terrain. You will be advised of potential evacuations as early as possible. Follow evacuation directions immediately.
To protect yourself from flying embers, consider long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, sturdy shoes, hat, face cover, and glasses. Clothing made of 100% cotton is preferable.
Preparing for Emergency Evacuation
Prior to any emergency you should prepare an Emergency Supply Kit. Duffle bags or backpacks work great for storing the following items and are quick to grab. Storing food and water in a tub or chest on wheels will make it easier to transport. Keep it light enough to be able to lift it into your car.
EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT (Go-Bag)
Suggested Contents:
Face masks or coverings
Three Day supply of non-perishable foods (Don’t forget can opener)
Three gallons minimum of water
Prescriptions or special medications
Change of clothing, weather and season appropriate (don’t forget shoes)
Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses
Spare battery chargers for phone and laptop
Extra set of keys (car and house)
Credit Cards and Cash
First Aid Kit
Flashlight
Battery powered radio with extra batteries
Sanitation Supplies
Copies (digital or hard copy) of important documents (birth certificates, passports, insurance, eyc.)
Pet food and pet medications
Items to take if time allows:
Easily Carried Valuables
Family photos and irreplaceable items
Personal computer information on hard drives and thumb drives
Other Family additional Supply needs
Pre-Evacuation Steps for Wildfire
When evacuation is anticipated, follow this checklist (if time allows):
WILDFIRE EVACUATION CHECKLIST
OUTSIDE
Gather flammable items from the exterior of the house and bring them inside (patio furniture, children’s toys, door mats, trash cans, etc.) or place them in your pool.
Turn off propane tanks.
Move propane BBQ appliances away from structures.
Connect garden hoses to outside water valves or spigots for use by firefighters. Fill water buckets and place them around the house.
Turn off sprinklers and running water; leaving them on can affect critical water pressure.
Leave exterior lights on so your home is visible to firefighters in the smoke or darkness of night.
Put your Emergency Supply Kit (go-bag) in your vehicle.
Back your loaded car into the driveway with all doors and windows closed. Carry your car keys with you.
Have a ladder available and place it at the corner of the house for firefighters to quickly access your roof.
Close or seal attic and ground vents with pre-cut fire-resistant boards or commercial heat resistance seals.
Monitor your property and the fire situation. Don’t wait for an evacuation order if you feel threatened and need to leave.
Check on neighbors and make sure they are preparing to leave.
INSIDE
Shut all windows and doors, leaving them unlocked.
Remove flammable window shades and curtains. Close metal shutters.
Move flammable furniture to the center of the room, away from windows and doors.
Shut off gas at the meter or tank. Turn off pilot lights.
Leave your lights on so firefighters can see your house under smoky conditions.
Shut off the air conditioning or heater.
Keep a sturdy pair of shoes and a flashlight near your bed or by your front door in case of a sudden night evacuation.
Locate your pets and keep them nearby and ready to go.
COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION DURING A FIRE
You must take the initiative to stay informed and aware. Listen to your radio/TV for announcements. You may be directed to temporary assembly areas to await transfer to a safe location. The terms “Warning” and “Order” are used to describe evacuation orders. However, local jurisdictions may use other terminology such as “Precautionary” and “Immediate Threat.” These terms are used to alert you to the significance of the danger. All evacuation instructions provided by officials should be followed immediately for your safety. If you see a fire approaching, however, don’t wait for notification. Go!
Washoe County Partners with the Cities of Reno and Sparks to institute a notification system, CodeRED, for use in times of crisis. The CodeRED cloud–based system relays emergency messages simultaneously through various methods.
When a crisis occurs, local public safety officials use a few methods to alert the public:
1. The Emergency Alert System (EAS). This system delivers messages via broadcast on radio and television.
2. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). These messages come to your cell phone via text and voice.
3. Reverse-dial. A pre-recorded message is sent to your landline.
4. Email. By signing up in CodeRED you can choose to receive notifications via email. Sign up by visiting www.washoecounty.gov/em/RegionalAlerts.php
5. Social & Traditional Media. Follow us on X (Twitter) and Like us on Facebook
EMERGENCY ROUTES
There are 3 main entrances/exits in Somersett and Sierra Canyon. It is important to know the alternate egress paths in case your primary exit is blocked. The following maps identify the primary routes, emergency routes, and utility easements that may be used in the event of an emergency evacuation. All primary routes in the community will lead to Somersett Pkwy, Somersett Ridge Parkway, or Dakota Ridge Trail.
• The West main Entrance and Exit leads to Mae Anne Avenue via Somersett Pkwy.
• The East main Entrance and Exit leads to I-80 through Somersett Ridge Pkwy.
• The Northwest Entrance and Exit leads to Beaumont Parkway via Dakota Ridge Trail or Logan Ridge Trail.
More detailed information about evacuation routes within our community can be found Canyon Web pages.
The Somersett Owners Association will also communicate for major events where the entire community of Somersett may be affected. Once an emergency is declared, the SOA will Implement the “Emergency Web Page” on the Somersett website (Somersett.com). The Emergency Web Page will serve as the site for the most current information available regarding any event and residents should check it regularly. The SOA will also inform residents of important information via email and text.
Somersett residents should confirm that their current email and cellphone information is listed in their account at www.Somersett. com.
Sierra Canyon residents should confirm that their current email and cellphone information is listed in their account at www. sierracanyonhoa.com.

Back Nine Trail Siblings are your Nevada Combined State Ski Champions
On February 18, 2025, Meila and Mason Ayers, on behalf of McQueen High School Ski Team, were crowned the overall Nevada State High School Champions in Alpine Ski Racing at Sky Tavern. Meila (a freshman) won both the Slalom and Giant Slalom events, while her brother Mason (a sophomore) placed third in the two events resulting in his combined times being the fastest for the boys. Mason and Meila were born in Arizona, started skiing at age 2, and were racing at age 4. The family moved to Reno in 2017 to pursue their ski racing adventure. They train full-time with Sugar Bowl Academy and are set to represent the Far West later this month at Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho where they will race against the fastest U16 ski racers for this third of the United States.
