This architectural sensation draws its inspiration from the client’s desire for a contemporary mountain home embracing their lifestyle. It also reflects collaborative design efforts to respond to the unique challenges of a complex site nestled amidst a natural boulder field. The culmination of this creative journey emerged during on-site design charrettes, where each element was carefully curated to capture the breathtaking panoramas of Donner Summit and the pine-filtered lakeview reflections.

The welcoming galleria entrance faces the approach, while the connected garage is thoughtfully nestled into the terrain. Upon entering, one’s gaze is drawn up within the solarium galleria, past an open staircase, towards trees, boulders, and sky views beyond. Downstairs includes a recreation and office area with a private Creekside courtyard. Upstairs reveals a spacious great room encompassing living, kitchen, and dining – all oriented to capture the views of Donner Lake and surrounding mountains. A wraparound deck and the home’s positioning ensure privacy from the street. Two master suites are set back within the property, providing added layers of seclusion.

The lodge master plan contemporized the existing community facilities into a mountain modern lodge. The aim was to create a comfortable space with an edge, while keeping the sense of location. This involved changing the color scheme to a still warm and inviting bright with high-contrast palette, careful space planning, close attention to scale, and updated layers of lighting. Selecting high-performance materials for flooring, textiles, wall coverings and finishes that, though commercial-grade, provide the ambiance of a residence, achieved the goal of retaining the mountain feel. The sophisticated design reflects its natural surroundings with subtle references to historic Olympic Valley. The reception creates a grand entrance and a sense of arrival. Exploration is encouraged through wayfinding flooring material layouts. The unique entrance vinyl wood-look, floor-tile pattern splits and steers you to reception or into the lobby. Eliminating the large center staircase promotes the connectivity between spaces, allowing for a more welcoming plan and new coffee/wine bar. The design itself is unique in the mix of materials, where high contrast and play with scale are everywhere. The lodge’s entry lights resembling Olympic rings and torches and the table design’s topographic map are nods to the historic valley it sits in.

The natural beauty of Truckee and Donner Lake was the inspiration for all the interior and exterior finishes. Centrally located on a level and sunny lot is this beautiful Donner Lakefront home. It sits back just enough to be blocked from the infamous afternoon Donner Lake winds by their neighbors’ home. Donner Memorial State Park sits across the lake providing gorgeous, unobstructed views of the park and mountains. This project started as a 1957 funky layout with small rooms to a functional 4-bedroom, 4 ½-bath modern, family home. One thousand square feet was added to the original space increasing the size of the kitchen, adding a master bedroom suite and a guest bedroom – all with stunning lake views. The living room slider was upgraded to a 4-panel, multi-slide with a 16-foot opening to captivate the view and create an open and usable indoor/outdoor entertaining space. The goal was to create a space cozy enough for the family of four and spacious enough for entertaining family and friends while enjoying the lake during the summer and snow-capped mountains in the winter.
