This event is open to all members, guests, community members, professionals and members of the Northern Nevada Golf Association—in other words, everyone! Masters Par Three Tournament

Saturday, April 7 | 9 am shotgun start $30 adult, $20 junior (under 18) | $9/person cart fee, if applicable Our traditional commemorative Masters Golf Tournament is back! The Masters Golf Tournament is traditionally the start of the golf season, including here in Reno, and our event mimics the one played at Augusta’s Par Three Course on the Wednesday prior to the actual tournament. Everyone in the Somersett community is welcome to participate, and the tournament has divisions for men, women and juniors. This year’s event will be held at the country club course. • We will award the top gross (actual score) and net (with established handicap through the GHIN system) scores. Adults with no established handicap will participate in the Callaway Scoring Division. Junior scoring will be gross only, and if participation warrants, age divisions will be added. • We will offer a deuce pool for all players who make a gross two on a hole. In the event of a hole in one, all deuce pool money will go to those making holes in one. • We’ll award closest to the hole on all par threes for men and women. • Juniors will fall into the men and women category for closest to the hole awards. • While playing your round, we will also test your knowledge with a Master’s Trivia Contest.

The event will be a 9 am shotgun start. Entry fees are $30 per adult player and $20 per junior player, which covers green fee, prize fund and a $5 food credit in the SunSett Grille to be used either prior to or after your round. Regular cart fees will apply. After your round, please join us in the Grille for live coverage of the third round of the 2018 Masters Tournament. We invite members to register online and community members to sign up with golf shop staff at 787-1800. We hope you can join us for this fabulous start-of-the-season event!

If you have a child in this age group who is not a member of the country club and would be excited to participate in this amazing program, please pick up an application at the country club. The application requires a copy of your child’s most recent report card and a short, handwritten paragraph by the junior telling why he or she would like to participate in the Somersett Junior Golf Program. Thank you to both of our golf associations here in Somersett and to the country club golf staff for your generosity. What is a fantastic opportunity! Applications are due by Friday, April 13. For more information, contact Stuart Smith at ssmith@somersett.com or 787-1800, ext. 105. Please note: 2016 and 2017 winners are not eligible in 2018.

GOLF TIP

Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

W

hat can you do over the winter to keep your game up? Take advantage of periods of good weather by hitting a few range balls each week. (In the off season, residents may hit off the mats on the south side of the driving range.) No session has to be lengthy–just work on making solid contact with the ball. Take many short swings with arms and shoulders engaged, evaluating only if the contact was solid. Feel your weight transfer back and through the golf ball. Feel the sensation of rotating as you perform these abbreviated motions. Feel soft wrists. As you hit a few solid shots, make your swing increasingly bigger. If you experience poor contact, shorten the swing until solid contact is

Hitting the Range

achieved. Write down what you experience before and after your solid shots. You will be a step ahead remembering those personal keys as you head into spring. We are very close to opening our indoor Short Game Arena, a shared project/asset of University Nevada Reno and the country club. The 4,000-square-foot area will include an 1,800-square-foot synthetic putting green, chipping and pitching areas with different types of synthetic grasses and two full-swing hitting areas. There is no better time to join Somersett Golf & Country Club with low monthly fees and no initiation fee. I am confident that there is a membership plan for you. Make it a point this year to play the Canyon 9 and the country club courses. Some of the best golf in Northern Nevada is right here in your back yard! If you need help with your game, contact our four professionals at the golf shop by calling 787-1800 x103.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation was incorporated in April 2012 and received its 501(c) (3) determination in January 2013. Over the past five years, the Parks Foundation has engaged thousands of citizens from all socio-economic and demographic backgrounds in activities that strengthen and educate our community and protect our environment. The Parks Foundation is a private, non-profit organization committed to raising awareness and appreciation of parks and open spaces through inpark, experiential programs offered free of cost to all citizens. Programs operating under our Healthy Parks Healthy People: Truckee Meadows initiative are designed to heighten environmental consciousness and preservation of public lands, help economically underserved students find academic success, and provide engaging and meaningful outdoor experiences for some of the most vulnerable citizens in the Reno-Sparks area. Programs include the Truckee Meadows Trails, Challenge, the Discover Your Parks Walks, the Junior Naturalist Program, the Parks Rephotography Program, and the Idlewild Health Walks for individuals living with Dementia and their care partners. In addition to the many programs we offer, the Parks Foundation also acts as fiscal sponsor for motivated groups of citizens without 501(c)(3) status. Under these agreements, the Parks Foundation works closely with the community group, local businesses, and the municipality or Washoe County to fundraise for specific projects. Donations made through fiscal sponsorship are generally tax deductible under federal law. Currently, the Parks Foundation is working to maintain and improve Virginia Lake Dog Park, the Reno Tennis Center, to create the Biggest Little Dog Park, and recently, to help add muchneeded amenities to Somersett West Park. You can help the Parks Foundation by volunteering your time and expertise or by investing in our local parks by making a tax-deductible contribution to a fiscal sponsorship project such as Somersett West Park (see next page). Support Somersett West Park!

A

beautiful new community space—West Park—is emerging at the corner of Somersett Parkway and Hawk Meadow Trail. The Somersett Parks Committee has been working with the City of Reno to create a neighborhood gathering place with something for everyone: a dog park, a children’s play area, a pavilion, a community garden, exercise trails and much more. To bridge the gap between the city’s construction budget of $800,000 and the estimated $1.5 million needed to create the park envisioned, West Park planners have partnered with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation to accept donations. Meet Bonnie Hughes

Winner of the Sommersett Living Photo Contest

WHERE DID YOU TAKE THIS PHOTO?: This photo was taken from our back yard, which backs up to hole #7 of the golf course. I don’t claim to be a photographer, I just enjoy taking pictures of what makes me happy. Sunsets make me happy! WHY SOMERSETT?: Our family bought our house before the Town Center was even built. We saw signs that said “golf community coming soon” and drove into Somersett which was nothing but dirt … bought our lot and saw pics of what the models were going to look like and never looked back! This is the friendliest community. We love our neighbors and everything that Somersett has to offer. We love belonging to Somersett Golf and Country Club and golfing with our friends every chance we get. WHERE ARE YOU FROM: I was born and raised in Reno. OCCUPATION: My husband David Hughes is a Realtor and all three of our children are now Realtors working with him. I handle their advertising, website and try my best to keep them busy. HOBBIES: Golfing, taking pictures of sunsets and spending time with my family. 22

Our Philosophy of Care:

Over 25 years creating Meaningful Moments®

To care for each individual with dignity and respect and join you in honoring them.

Earlier this year my mother became a resident of Stone Valley. Unfortunately, she passed away too soon; however, by the time she did, we had all become part of the Stone Valley “family.” While my mother was there, we were reassured and so thankful for the level of care and love she received every day from the entire team. —Leslee P.

Assessment Reminder

Rules & Regulations Spotlight

Assessments are due on the first of each month and are overdue if not paid by the 30th of the month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Accounts 75 days past due will be sent to collections.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) Did you know you can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website? Payments submitted online go through ClickPay, a third-party payment processing company. Payments submitted through ClickPay typically take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Please keep this information in mind for last-minute assessment payments as payments received after the 30th are subject to a $25 late fee. ClickPay charges a fee for its payments made by debit or credit card. There is no fee if you pay by e-check. For an extra fee, you may arrange to have a payment posted within one business day. You may also submit payments to the SOA office, via check or money order only.

FRONT YARD LANDSCAPING We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable winter! With the warmer weather around the corner, enforcement for front yard landscaping will begin once again. The compliance date is April 9. Please make sure you have properly cared for your grass by that time. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Kenna Foote, Compliance Director, at kenna.foote@fsresidential.com or call 7874500 x327.

PARKING REGULATIONS All recreational vehicles including boats, trailers and campers are permitted on your property for a period of 48 hours only for the purpose of loading and unloading. Once the 48 hours has expired, the vehicle must not return on the property for three consecutive days. On private streets, parking between the hours of 2 and 6 am is prohibited. One parking pass may be given per vehicle, per property once a month. These passes may be obtained from the front desk at The Club at Town Center. Vehicles found to be parked between the hours of 2 and 6 am will receive a violation first warning. Following the first warning, if the vehicle is parked on the street within 30 days, it will then receive a violation sticker and be towed within 48 hours at the owner’s expense. Reno City ordinances state that no vehicle may remain on a city street in excess of 48 hours without being moved at least one mile. If you would like to report a vehicle on a city street, please contact Reno Direct at 775-334-4636.
