GOLF TIP

Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

T

As we head into winter and temperatures prevent many of us from heading out to the golf course, it’s a great time to work on easy putting fundamentals in the comfort of our homes. I recommend a few simple putting fundamentals – for right handers, the ball should be placed slightly left of center, with eyes over ball and equal back/equal through with the putter head. Remember the motion of the putter includes shoulders, arms, hands, putter grip and putter head all working at the same tempo. Putting is not just an activity for the hands if you are striving for consistency. PGA and LPGA Tour players have tempos of 62 to 72 beats per minute regardless of the length of putt they face. Consider this formula:

Putting

Short putt = short back and slower through – at X tempo Long putt = longer back and faster through – ALSO at X tempo You can purchase an inexpensive app for your smartphone, which may help. I use Metron. You can also have your stroke evaluated on our TOMI Putting Stroke Analyzer at the country club golf shop with PGA Director of Golf Stuart Smith for $40. Stuart can be reached at 787-1800, ext. 705 or ssmith@somersett.com to set an appointment.

Somersett Shares & Somersett Cares

T

he Helping Hands Barrel is located inside The Club at Town Center’s (TCTC) foyer. It serves as a convenient way for everyone in our area to distribute gently used clothing, shoes, kitchen items, sheet sets, towels and more to Veterans, homeless teenagers in Project 150 and other people in need. We can tell, many of you use it often! It always seems to be full! In October and November we will be collecting jackets, sweatshirts and other warm clothing for Veterans and the homeless.

eyeglasses donations W

e will also be working with the Reno Arch Lions Club to collect eyeglasses for their Lions Recycle for Sight program. In just about any home, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person’s life. Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeeds in his job. A senior maintains her independence. And provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive. Everyone can help. We will be collecting used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs). LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in low and middle-income communities where they will have the greatest impact.

And yet another opportunity…..

M

any of you have asked that we support our homeless pets and pet shelters. We will be adding another donation box for dog and cat donations in the near future. Items such as dog and cat food,

water and food bowls, toys, leashes and collars, brushes/grooming tools, pet beds and towel are desperately needed. From time to time we will add a list of a specific shelter’s needs so all area pet shelters can be helped.

Halloween Candy

A

lso in October, we will collect at TCTC all the extra Halloween Candy not distributed. Last year Somersett donated over 85 pounds of treats! This year we hope to collect even more! We are working in partnership to collect and donate sweet treats for our Deployed Troops and First Responders at Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ care packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the Military and First Responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation. Each package contains donated product valued from $45–$100, and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1,800,000 care packages. We are thankful to Somersett residents and their generosity and caring. The Helping Hands Barrel is checked, maintained and items distributed by the Wild Whimsical Women This group is comprised of between 110 –115 women who live mainly in Somersett, Del Webb and some members hail from Verdi and Midtown Reno Somersett Cares and Somersett truly shares.

The deadline for contributions is mid-November. 13

YOUR COMMUNITY FOOD BANK

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada

T

he Food Bank of Northern Nevada has been helping those families who struggle with hunger for more than 30 years in our community. The Food Bank is helping an average of 95,000 people each month, a number that has not changed for two full years. Of those served by the Food Bank, nearly half are children and seniors, the most vulnerable in our community. Many people who need food assistance are working but with rising rents and other expenses, they struggle to make ends meet. It takes a lot of help and support to make this work happen and the Food Bank is so grateful to those in the Somersett community who continually step up to help give these families food and hope. Somersett residents have helped over the years by hosting and donating to food drives, sending dollars to help fund fresh produce distributions, and by offering their time and talents by volunteering at the warehouse. In fact, just this year, the Somersett Ladies Golf Association has given more than 31 hours of time to help the Food Bank sort and pack food at the warehouse. Because of these efforts, the food can be quickly sent to the 140 partner agencies all over the 90,000 square mile service area and made available to families who need it right away. Your support helps single mothers like Tabitha. Tabitha has two children, an autistic teenager and a nine year old. Before she was connected with Food Bank resources, she would worry so much about how she would provide enough nutritious food for her children, it would make her sick. She told us that she would worry all of the time about how she would be able to afford of the expenses necessary to support her children. Tabitha said that when she would run out of money for groceries, there were so many times that she would go without eating so that her children would be able to eat. She has had to choose between paying important bills or buying food for her family. Receiving food at the pantry at her child’s school along with the fruits and vegetables she receives through the Mobile Harvest Program have changed the way Tabitha and her children live. They have hope and the ability to solve the other problems in their lives because they have their food needs met. During the holiday season we are reminded of all we have to be thankful for. As we spend time with family and celebrate the season, know that the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is thankful for your efforts in our community. Hunger is a year-round issue in our community and we are thrilled that the community continually steps up to help us fight it! Together we can solve hunger.

Give now!

Drop off your donations at the concierge desk at The Club at Town Center. See page 3 for more information.

To find out more about the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, visit fbnn.org or call us at 775-331-3663. We’d love to give you a tour of your community Food Bank!

Our Philosophy of Care:

Over 25 years creating Meaningful Moments®

To care for each individual with dignity and respect and join you in honoring them.

Earlier this year my mother became a resident of Stone Valley. Unfortunately, she passed away too soon; however, by the time she did, we had all become part of the Stone Valley “family.” While my mother was there, we were reassured and so thankful for the level of care and love she received every day from the entire team. —Leslee P.
