Play the Tom Kite Designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett residents are invited to play the championship country club golf course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $70 per player (in season) and $45 per player (off season, November-March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, we request no denim, spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf shoes or tennis shoes, is required.

Driving Range Somersett residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the country club. With the SOA/country club agreement, range usage is complimentary. From November through April, residents may use the south side where we are always on mats. The cost to access the putting green and chipping area in the winter is $10. Please check in with the golf shop. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Men, please remember our simple dress code of collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times, with no denim or jogging suits. For the ladies, we ask no denim, jogging suits, spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf shoes or tennis shoes, is required.

Winter/Snow Season We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, etc., on either course in the winter. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

GOLF TIP: Putting By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf

s we head into winter and temperatures prevent many of us from heading out to the golf course, it is a great time to work on some easy putting fundamentals in the comfort of our homes. I recommend a few simple putting fundamentals: • Ball placed slightly left of center (right-handers) with hands a little ahead of the ball. • Eyes over ball line/target line. • Equal length back, equal length through with the putter head. Remember the motion of the putter includes shoulders, arms, hands, putter grip and putter head all working at the same tempo. Putting is not just a hands activity if you are striving for consistency. PGA and LPGA tour players have tempos of 62–72 beats per minute regardless of the length of putt they face. This equates to approximately .90 seconds of elapsed time. The “holy grail” of putting tempo is 2:1 as evidenced by most great players. This would equal .60 seconds on the backstroke and .30 seconds on the through stroke. Most importantly you should recognize

the importance of acceleration through the ball. All golf greats have that trait. SHORT PUTT = short back and slower through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo LONG PUTT = longer back and faster through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo You can purchase an inexpensive App for your smartphone to help you with this. I use Metron, but just about any metronome app would work. To monitor speeds and tempo, I recommend a Blast Motion sensor. Need help with your putting this winter? Alcohol Policy

Members must check in to the facility upon entering and have their picture taken to program into the system. Members may be turned away if they cannot provide a valid ID.

Alcoholic beverages may be purchased from the Club. Members and their guests are not allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages onto the premises, including the pool area and Canyon Nine. No alcoholic beverages will be sold or served to any person not permitted to purchase the same under the laws of the state of Nevada or be sold for offpremises consumption. The Club reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to refuse service to any member or guest who appears to be intoxicated.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members may bring up to four guests per household at one time. Members must accompany guests at all times.

The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Somersett Cares and Somersett Shares

he Helping Hands Barrel, located in the foyer at The Club at Town Center, serves as a convenient way to collect gently used clothing, shoes, kitchen items, sheet sets, towels and more for distribution to people in need. Many of you use it often—it always seems to be full! In November we will collect jackets, sweatshirts and other warm clothing for veterans and the homeless. We also have a Paws and Claws donation box for pet items such as dog and cat food, water and food bowls, toys, leashes and collars, brushes/grooming tools, pet beds and towels. All donated items go to local pet shelters. The Helping Hands Barrel and the Paws and Claws box are checked, maintained and items distributed by the Wild Whimsical Women. This group of between 110–115 women live mainly in Somersett, with a few members hailing from Verdi and Midtown Reno. 9

KIDS’ CORNER POLICY REMINDERS

• Kids’ Corner will only accept children 2 to 6 years of age. All children must be registered by the parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge desk or online at mysomersett.com. • Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, and swimming or during a special Club function. • For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. • The room operates on a six-to-one ratio, with a maximum of 12 children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at mysomersett.com seven days in advance. • All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the fifteen-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the waitlist. • No-shows will result in a $10 fee per child due to the Club. Cancellations must be received by 8 am on the day of the reservation.

Saturday, November 3, 6–8 pm Doors open at 5:30 pm Sunday, November 4, 1:30–3:30 pm Doors open at 1 pm | $10/person The Theater Group has done it again, writing original scripts for two of the plays, as well as poems. “Checking – In,” by Sierra Canyon resident Edie Cartwright, is about unsuspecting individuals who are surprised to find themselves waiting in line, not knowing how they got there or why. In “Best Try Electronics,” written by Sierra Canyon residents Van Brenner and Harold Allred, a displeased customer tries to return an item that doesn’t work anymore. How many days past the purchase date will the electronics store still honor the receipt? The final play, “Noah,” is by Bob Rinfret. Can the unskilled Noah overcome the building obstacles and rejection he encounters as he attempts to build an Ark? You will be entertained before each play by poems cleverly written with Sierra Canyon seniors in mind. “Ring of Fire” and “Home on the Range” are by Van Brenner and “The Saga of Sam Brown” is by Doris Deming. Light refreshments will be served.

In 2009,

Brian Williams, a local Reno resident, was asked to speak to a school to help reduce bully-related incidents in their school. Little did he know that his presentation would spark the creation of a non-profit organization and launch a national kindness movement that would impact over 1,000,000 lives around the world. Brian Williams is the founder of Think Kindness, a non-profit organization dedicated to inspire measurable acts of kindness in schools and communities around the world. His approach to bully prevention is unique, he never even mentions the word bully. Instead, he focuses on kindness. “Our aim is to make ‘kindness cool.’ And by doing that, we instantly create an environment where children choose to be kind. Immediately decreasing bully-related incidents in schools,” says Williams. Williams uses competition to immediately get kids excited to be. “It’s more than a 1-hour assembly. It’s a 15 day call-to-action. School versus school, who can make the biggest difference in the world...in just 15 days,” says Williams.

The organization has grown immensely since 2009. Now Think Kindness and their team of speakers visit schools across the United States. Last year the organization visited over 178 schools, spoke to over 120,000 students and documented over 580,000 acts of kindness. But now, the organization has their sites on a bigger project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We receive great feedback the impact our 15 Day challenge has on schools. But now we wanted to create a year-round program for schools. To create kindness leadership teams that have the sole-purpose to carry-out acts of kindness within their school,â&#x20AC;? says Williams.

THINK KINDNESS is currently seeking donations and volunteers to help execute and bring this program into fruition. As an organization, 100% of all donations go directly to the cause and is powered by volunteers. If this is something you are interested in, you can visit their website at www.ThinkKindness.org. The group’s mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the military and first responder communities and to provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation. Each package contains donated products valued from $45-$100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 2,100,000 care packages.

Assessments are due on the first of each month. A late fee of $25 will be posted to accounts not paid by the 30th of the month. Accounts 60 days past due will lose clubhouse and/or Canyon Nine privileges. Accounts 75 days past due will be sent to collections.

Assessment Payments Submitted Online (via Paylease) You can pay your monthly assessments online from the FirstService Residential website through ClickPay, a third-party payment processing company. Payments submitted through ClickPay typically take up to three business days to be credited to your assessment account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing and could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front-yard landscaping.

DECEMBER DECORATIONS Holiday decorations may be installed up to 10 days before a holiday and must be taken down within 10 days after the holiday, with the exception of the December holidays. December decorations may be installed beginning at Thanksgiving and must be removed by January 31.

2018 Board Election

By now you should have received Board election ballots and candidate statements. Nevada law requires that all directors be elected by secret written ballot. Only you can vote on your secret ballot, which must be completely filled in and placed in the envelope marked secret ballot. It will not be opened until the Annual Meeting at 4 pm on Monday, November 19, at The Club at Town Center. Ballots must be received in person or by mail no later than 1 pm on Nov. 19. No ballots will be accepted at the Annual Meeting.

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS: As a freshman in high school, I won first place in a tri-high-school art competition. Also as a freshman, I varsity lettered in track. I was co-captain of the football team and lastly, I retired with only two injuries from law enforcement.

SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Every morning I get up early to pray and spiritual meditate. In Morgan Hill, I was a founding member of a Metaphysical Study Center. When the reverend was away, I would conduct the meetings.

Tahoe Film Festival

he 4th Annual Tahoe Film Fest presented by SWEP, Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships, will take place December 6 through 9 at several different locations through the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee area, including: Incline Village Cinema, Northstar Village Cinema, Truckee Community Arts Center (downtown Truckee) and the Crystal Bay Club. Tahoe Film Fest brings over 25 environmental and independent feature length and award winning films. Among the many films to be screened at the festival is “Stay Human,” a documentary film by music star, Michael Franti, who will also be at the festival. What does it mean to be human? What connects people around the globe? How can we celebrate the beauty of love and life in a world turned upside down? These are just a few of the questions world-renowned musician Michael Franti explores in this captivating and stirring documentary. Opening night of the festival will feature “The Push,” a film directed by North Tahoe local Grant Korgan, an outdoor sports enthusiast, who is recovering from a spinal cord injury. Grant, along with two seasoned explorers, became the first spinal cord injured athlete to PUSH himself 100 miles across the South Pole. Grant Korgan and other local filmmakers will be present at the festival. Tahoe Film Fest is celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” This film and accompanying documentary about the making of the film will be shown at the festival. The filmmakers of the documentary will be present. Special guests will be present and special events will be held each evening in Truckee and at the Crystal Bay Club.
