1.0 INTRODUCTION This module has been designed to help foster of sense of care and concern among students for their community, environment and the world at large. This module will help develop students’ sense of personal and social responsibility. We will learn through participating in a community service experience and will have the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge in real-life situations. The class has been split into a few teams to conduct various projects to full fill the module brief and requirements. For our group, we have chosen to do a fundraising project to help a dog shelter so that they are able to give the dogs more such as a better home, better medication and sufficient food. In a team of 26 people, we have done we have taken various steps in order to raise funds for the this cause. Stray dogs in our country has been widely abuse. There are many people who look down on these dogs. On top of that, there are also pet dogs that has been let go by owners who do not know how to take care of the dog and give the excuse that the dogs are troubled. Our team have a passion to help these dogs who are also God’s creation. They deserve to have a better life without having to wander at the street in hunger. A lot of dogs that do not find a home or unable to be medicated due to diseases are forced to be put to sleep. Therefore, our team has chosen this cause to raise funds for. We have chosen to help raise funds for Lost Animal Soul Shelter (LASS). LASS is a nonprofit organisation. LASS was established in 2013 to shelter, heal and protect our four-legged friends who are victims of abuse, neglect and lack of love, attention and affection. Since then, they have welcomed over 250 dogs into their hearts and the shelter and have continued to provide them as well as many others a loving, safe environment to live out their tail-wagging days. At LASS, they believe that every dog deserves life under the sunshine.

2.0 AIM The aim of the project is as follows: 1. To raise RM 10,000. After understanding the cause and also understanding the basic needs of the dogs and the expenditure of the shelter, we have decided to set a goal to raise RM10, 000 by selling merchandises, collecting donations and many other methods. The shelter’s average monthly expenditure is about RM 17,000. 2. To find homes for 5 dogs. The shelter is now home to over 250 dogs. Recently, there was a virus that spread at the shelter. It has cause many dogs to be put to sleep and even 4 puppies that we recently visited. We aimed to help 5 dogs to find a new home. 5 healthy dogs went through a check-up and were to be brought to the event to be put up for adoption. 3. Raise awareness about stray dogs. Besides wanting to raise funds and help the shelter, we felt the responsibility to raise awareness amongst the community about the dog abuse and the stray dogs in hope that we will not abandon their pet dogs and add to the problem. Also, we hope that in the future, if they do see a dog being abused, they will help the dogs by taking the dogs in or bring the dog to the shelter.

3.0 Methodology In order to succeed and reach our aim, we have come up with a few methods. 1. Selling Shirts The design team has designed a t-shirt for this cause and the team worked hard on selling the shirt. We set a quota for each team member to sell at least 13 shirts. The team members were to go around trying to sell the shirts in campus and also spread the word to their love ones outside. 2. Having a Dog Campaign Event. To be able to gage more with the community and further explained out cause, we have gotten permission to hold a fundraising / campaign at Central Park, Bandar Utama. Central Park is a well-known dog park other than Desa park City where they are a lot of dog lovers. On top of that, by having the event, the community are able to have contact to the dogs that are up for adoption so that the relationship between the dog and the new owner can be easier built. On top of that, we are able to collect donations and also spread more awareness to the dog lovers at this park 3. Giving out flyers In order to spread the words about our campaign event, we have spilt into smaller groups to give out flyers at the listed areas: Sunway College, SS15 Subang Jaya, Damansara Jaya, Taman Tun, Damansar Uptown. 4. Spreading the word on the social media. We have also created a Facebook page where we posted updates regarding the event and also spread awareness about stray dogs and our cause. 5. Finding sponsorship. We also formed a sponsorship team where to find other companies to sponsor our event and also help to raise funds for the cause.

7.4 Summary of the Campaign

On the 21st and 22nd April 2016, our group held a dog adoption event, to aid our dog fund raising campaign. Preparation for the event started many weeks before the event date. We divided ourselves into smaller groups with each group having specific duties and responsibilities. However, some of the activities and proposal that was listed out , we did not managed to fulfill them due to some difficulties that we faced along the project. On account of the recent spread of virus among the stray dogs in the shelter, we were unable to take the dogs to show during the adoption but we managed to only get 4 dogs from another shelter that is fostering a number of stray dogs from LASS. Another activity on the list that was not able to be carried out is the short talks by Mr. Sam as he could not make it for the two days event. Other than that, most of the activities proposed were able to be carried out effectively.

Both days of the event were very successful; there were many people that brought their dogs to the venue, especially between 9am-11am and between 4pm-6.30pm. During these hours, they gathered at our booth and around the stray dogs, playing with them and to listen to further information on what we were having at our booth. Most of them donated money for the dog-shelter accommodating the dogs. One couple even brought some dog food and gave some for us to feed the dogs and also to give back to the shelter.

A positive point was that the weather was very pleasant throughout the whole time, which enabled a large number of people to visit the event. Overall, we and the stray dogs really enjoyed ourselves and had learned a lot from both sides. Families came to see the stray dog, they help supported them too, by playing and donating to them.

These were the other stray dogs that were up for adoption, they were very shy at first. But how we manage to help them to open up is the fun part. We use our own dogs to help they stray ones to open up. It took a while but it was worth it. The dogs manage to play and be with everyone at the end of the day.

This man also loves dogs and help us to manage the stray dogs well too.

8.0 SPONSORSHIP In order to raise more funds, we have went around to find sponsorships for the project. We seek for help from various pet shops and architecture firm to ask if they were interested in helping to fund for the project. An official sponsorship request letter has been typed out to be circulated to the following companies. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Summers Pet, SS2 Pet Friend, Cheras Pets Lover, SS2 Pets More, Kota Damansara. KSKA Architect Sdn Bhd.

The company that have agreed to sponsor for this event was Pet Friend and KSKA Architect Sdn Bhd. Pet Friend sponsored 10 goodie bags to be given out during the event. In the goody bag, there were dog food, dog treats, dog collars and also dog shampoo. The goody bags were to be given out to those that adopted the dogs so that they would have some basic necessity to care for a dog. Pet friend has also sponsored some coupons that are to be given out to those who have helped donate for the cause. KSKA Architect Sdn Bhd has agree to sponsor the printing for the flyers. We have printed 2000 A5 flyers to be circulated.

9.0 ACCOUNT AND FINANCE

10.0 CONCLUSION All in all, this project was very successful. We were able to reach our goal to raise RM 10,000 by raising a total of RM 10, 818.00. Everyone’s hard work raising funds, going around spreading the word about the event, selling merchandises paid off. We have also develop relevant communication skills for collaborative work with community to work in a career that will make contributions to society. On top of that, we have develop a holistic awareness of the variety of problems. Through this project, we applied information management skills and strengthen their lifelong academic learning. We learnt to be creative in approaching the society to collect donations and also to instil awareness. On top of that, after the event, there were people who contacted us wanting to adopt dogs from the shelter. We are glad that we were able to spread the awareness about dog abuse and stray dog adoption. We have developed ourselves a strong sense of social responsibility and be able to portray leadership qualities and being able to work effectively as a team. In the future, we will be able to use this soft skill to help the community once again.
